mise bootstrap could fail with another history operation is running even when no history was being recorded. Every bootstrap took an exclusive lock in $MISE_STATE_DIR/history (and created the history store) before it knew whether it would write anything, so two bootstraps sharing a state dir (parallel CI jobs on one runner, or a cached state dir) serialized, and the second failed after waiting 30 seconds. This was reported in discussion #13325.

$ mise bootstrap # while another bootstrap holds the lock
mise history: waiting for another history operation to finish
mise ERROR another history operation is running # after 30s

Now a bootstrap that records no file history (nothing tracked, no enrollment, no existing history) opens its history journal lazily, at the first dotfile or edit it is about to rewrite:

  • A bootstrap that rewrites none (no [dotfiles] or edits to apply, which is most CI re-runs) never takes the lock and never creates history/ in the state dir.
  • One that does rewrite files still journals them for crash recovery, exactly as before, when the lock is free.
  • If another process holds the lock at that moment, it no longer fails. It warns and runs without the recovery journal for that run:
mise WARN history: another history operation is running; continuing without recovery data for this run
mise files: copied ~/proj/src.txt to ~/out.txt

Runs that do record history (tracked files, enrollment, existing history), and every other history operation (apply, undo, saves), behave as before: they take the lock up front, wait up to 30 seconds, and then fail. A bootstrap that starts with nothing to record but ends up declaring tracking (for example from a pulled configuration) still takes the lock at the end so its outcome is recorded. history.enabled = false still skips all of this.

The tradeoff is that a contended bootstrap with nothing to record loses crash recovery for the files it rewrites in that run. Running bootstrap writes without recovery data is already an accepted mode (it warns and continues when it cannot save a recovery copy).

The history docs (docs/history.md and the history.enabled setting) now also explain that history activates only once you track files or adopt a setup repository, however that config arrives (including a plain git clone, a dotfile manager, or Nix), that history.enabled = false stops automatic capture and explicit saves, and that CI jobs sharing a runner can use a per-job MISE_STATE_DIR or MISE_HISTORY_ENABLED=false.

Validation: unit tests cover the typed lock-busy error, that nothing to record creates no history store, and that existing history counts as recording; the existing history unit tests pass (267). With the built binary I checked that a bootstrap with nothing to write leaves no history/ dir, that a dotfile write creates the store and journals as before, and that a dotfile write with the lock held from another process warns and completes immediately. test_dotfiles_* e2e tests for history, track, files, edits, incoming enrollment and manifest bootstrap pass on macOS; test_dotfiles_groups (BSD sed in the test script) and test_bootstrap_config_roots (a read-only bootstrap plan service assertion) fail locally on macOS and look unrelated, so Linux CI is the check there. Clippy with -D warnings is clean. The case where a run starts with nothing to record and ends up recording is covered by reading the code, not by a test.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes core history/bootstrap locking and crash-recovery journaling; contended lazy bootstraps can run without recovery data, though full-recording paths behave as before.

Overview
Bootstrap no longer grabs the history lock or creates $MISE_STATE_DIR/history when there is nothing to record (no tracked dotfiles, no enrollment, no existing history). Those runs enter a lazy operation scope and only open the recovery journal on the first dotfile/edit rewrite; if they never write, they never touch history state.

When a lazy bootstrap does rewrite files but another process holds the history lock (e.g. parallel CI sharing one MISE_STATE_DIR), it warns and continues without a recovery journal instead of waiting 30s and failing. Runs that must record file history still take the lock up front, wait up to 30s, and fail on contention. A bootstrap that gains tracking mid-run tries to open the journal at the end so the outcome can be recorded.

Docs and history.enabled text now spell out opt-in activation, what false disables vs preserves, and CI guidance (MISE_STATE_DIR per job or MISE_HISTORY_ENABLED=false).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • History
    • Tracking files, declaring them in system or global configuration, adopting a setup repository, or receiving configuration through other means activates history without separate enablement.
    • When no files are tracked and no history exists, bootstrap runs delay accessing history state until a dotfile or edit is rewritten. If the lock is busy, they warn and proceed without a recovery journal.
    • Runs that record history wait up to 30 seconds for the lock and fail if it remains busy. If tracking is declared during a run, it waits at the end; if the lock remains busy or an earlier write lacked a journal, it warns and keeps the result.
    • Disabling history stops automatic capture and explicit saves while preserving browsing, checkpoint-description changes, and committed history.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified history activation and lock behavior, including separate state directories or disabling history for CI jobs.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Bootstrap operations defer history setup when they have no file history to record. If tracking changes make history necessary, the operation starts journaling. If the lock is busy during lazy startup, the operation proceeds without a journal. Documentation describes history enablement and lock behavior.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 5/5

[High risk] Changes how history state initialization and locking work during bootstrap.

The PR appears safe to merge; no actionable new issues were found.

What we checked:

  • Background checks share settings: Settings::get() reads the same shared cache on every thread.

Summary

This PR delays bootstrap’s recovery journal until the first file write when there is nothing to record. A busy lock then produces a warning instead of stopping bootstrap.

  • Runs that record history keep their existing lock behavior.
  • The latest change moves history checks off the async worker.
  • The three earlier documentation findings are addressed by the current wording and end-of-run warning.

Publish the lazy writer only for its original scope.

refresh_tracked awaits spawn_blocking while the bootstrap scope remains live. The CLI can drop that command future when its exit signal wins, while spawn_blocking continues. The dropped scope clears CURRENT.

A later bootstrap can install a new Current::Lazy. The old open_lazy then accepts that state because it checks only the variant. It publishes the old writer, so the later scope can update, finish, or abandon the old operation with the wrong tracking and outcome data.

Use a stable identity for each lazy start and compare it before changing CURRENT.

start_if_recording awaits spawn_blocking(|| open_lazy(OPERATION_LOCK_WAIT)). If cancellation drops the scope at that await, the started blocking task continues. (docs.rs)

If open_lazy publishes its writer after close calls started() but before clear_current(), close returns None and then clears the published writer. The writer is dropped without finish or abandon, so its lock is released and its pending journal record remains without a final outcome.

Add a regression test for lazy bootstrap promotion.

OperationScope::begin can return a lazy scope when bootstrap has nothing to record. refresh_tracked must then open the journal when refreshed tracking becomes recordable. The current tests cover would_record and direct Writer behavior only. They do not exercise refresh_tracked, so a regression that leaves the scope lazy would pass.
