…ts use `mise installs ls` lists every identity-layout installation with what it is (tool, version, platform, options, pinned artifact) and whether it is selected, pinned by a lockfile, or in a shared root. `mise installs select <dir>` makes an installation the one requests without a lockfile use, on the whole machine, and points the version link at it; a path selects one in a read-only shared root, recorded in the user's own catalog. With no selection (lost, or never made because only lockfiles installed the request), mise reuses and selects the one installation that answers the request, and stops with a list instead of guessing when several do. A selected installation whose payload was pruned is restored in place, and one in a shared root that disappeared is reported rather than replaced. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M44TG6AFZB9CR8RA2DJ31AV2
A selection naming an installation in a shared root was looked up there, but when that root (or its record) could not be read, the user's own catalog answered the same digest, and an install of the same identity there silently replaced the selection. A foreign selection is now answered from its root alone and reported missing otherwise. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M44V1RE3T3CAFZJFGNWCWX97
… selection alone - An unlocked request is answered by the user's own selection, wherever it points, even when that installation was pruned (installing restores it in place) instead of falling through to a copy in a shared root. - With nothing selected, installations are counted across every root: one is used and selected, several stop with the list, including one in the user's root and one in a shared root, and installing stops too instead of quietly making another. - Selecting a shared installation retargets the user's version links, and an installation can only be selected through a catalog that lists it (the user's own is rebuilt from receipts first). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M44W67FYHEQBBF95BDH1MVVN
With several installations answering an unlocked request and none selected, locate still reported the request's own allocation as its path, so `mise where`, `mise x`, shims and PATH quietly used one of them. It now reports a path that is never an installation, and the CLI-named fallback in `where` no longer counts installations of the request itself as option variants, so nothing runs until the user chooses. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M44WJ0073J5DNQV6YP802C2A
`select` only rewrote links in tool directories that existed and whose target still had a receipt, so with the tool directory gone (or the link dangling) the version link was never made. The tool it was requested as now gets its directory and link, and a link into a shared root's store is recognized as a version link. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M44X7X6JR361NP2N7ERD7AWX
…stallation unlink_installation matched links by the installation's directory name, and the same identity has the same name in a shared root's store, so removing the user's own copy also removed a version link that selected the shared one. It now compares the whole target. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M44XK5WANVGV3S57P9RB13W1
…, no variant fallback while a request is undecided - In the tool's own directory, select points the version link at the selected installation whichever variant it named before; other tool directories still only move between installations of the same request. - variants_of offers nothing while the request itself has installations or a selection, so `mise where` no longer prints an options variant when the plain request is ambiguous or its selected installation is missing. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M44Y8X0KVVAPQGHF595CJZ3X
… removes After `mise uninstall`, the request kept selecting the removed installation, so a legacy or shared copy of the same version was never used and `mise where` said not installed. An explicit uninstall now drops the selections that named it; prune still keeps them, so a pruned selection is restored in place. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M44YZBZAJGMZ2SERTW8HBJ7H
…pies by path, filter installs ls by receipt - An unlocked request that adopts the one installation in a shared root now gets its version link in the user's own tool directory, as an explicit `installs select` does. - The ambiguity error lists each installation by its path: the same identity has the same directory name in every root that has it, so the names alone could not be told apart or selected. - `mise installs ls <tool>` decides which installations are the tool's from their receipts, so one the catalog lost, or one in a shared root, is not hidden by the filter. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M44ZY05TGC2KFW2N9B6R62JT
…ection A selection whose installation was pruned is restored in place on the next install. When a real directory sits at the version's path in the user's own installs root, that directory is what PATH runs and the selection's link cannot be put there, so mise used to report one directory while PATH ran the other. mise now uses the directory at the version's path. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M450V49SAKFG8898067X3CAW
…tion heal_links recreated a missing version link from the first installation of the user's own, so with a shared installation selected the rebuilt link named a leftover local copy. It now names the selected installation of the version, in whichever root that is. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M451Y5SK4QXZGTBC5740Z5Q3
Uninstall read the selections that named an installation and then deleted them, while selections were written without a lock: a choice made with `mise installs select` in between could be the one deleted. Selections are now written under the catalog lock that the removal holds, and adopting an installation for a request with nothing selected checks and writes under it. …n the shared catalog lost its record A shared root's catalog cannot be rebuilt by the user's mise, so a selection naming an installation there was reported missing whenever that catalog lost the record, even with the installation in place. … lock Two `mise installs select` runs at once could each write their choice and then retarget the version links in the other order, leaving the links on one installation and the selection on the other. Repairing a missing version link read the selection and then made the link, while `mise installs select` could save another choice and its link in between; the repair then put the link back on the older choice. Instruction countsNothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does. New, nothing to compare against: Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run. Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

Requested by Jeff
Stacked on the Windows store PR (and #13951). Adds the explicit selection interface the identity install layout needs (#13678), and stops mise from guessing when several installations answer one request.
Before: with
install_layout = "identity", several installations of one version can exist (a forced refresh that could not replace a lockfile's copy, or copies different lockfiles pinned), but there was no way to see them side by side or to say which one requests without a lockfile should use. If the remembered selection was lost, mise silently fell back to the request's first allocation. After:
mise installs ls [TOOL]... [--json]lists every installation with its tool, version, platform, options and status:selected(requests without a lockfile use it),pinned(a lockfile adopted it),shared(in a read-only shared installs directory).--jsonadds the backend, mode, options and artifact checksum.mise installs select <dir|path>records the selection for that installation's request (tool, version, platform, options) for every project on the machine, and points the version link at it. Locked requests are unaffected. Passing a path selects an installation in a shared root; the selection is stored in the user's own catalog and nothing is written to the shared root. With no selection (it was lost, or only lockfiles ever installed the request), mise reuses and selects the one installation that answers the request; when several do it stops and lists them instead of guessing:
A selected installation whose payload was pruned is restored in its own directory instead of falling back to another one, and a selected shared installation that disappeared is reported rather than silently replaced.
Both commands are experimental and need the layout on.
Validation: new
e2e/cli/test_install_layout_selectcovers listing, selecting by name and path, the version link following the selection, ambiguity with a lost selection and both ways out (select, install --force), single-candidate adoption (including an installation only a lockfile made), and selections of shared-root installations (no writes to the shared root, an error when it disappears). The existing layout e2e tests pass unchanged.AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-opus-5-5; version: unavailable.

Summary by CodeRabbit
mise installscommands to list identity-layout installations and select which installation is used for matching requests without a lockfile. Listings show whether installations are selected, pinned, or shared; filtering and JSON output are available.Note
Medium Risk
Changes how identity-layout tools are resolved for install, where, and exec when multiple side-by-side installations exist; mistakes could break tool paths until the user selects, though the feature is experimental and gated on
install_layout = "identity".Overview
Adds experimental
mise installsfor the identity install layout:mise installs lslists every installation (with selected, pinned, shared status, optional JSON) andmise installs selectrecords which copy unlocked requests use machine-wide and retargets version links.Resolver behavior changes for unlocked requests: mise no longer silently falls back when several complete installations match and nothing is selected—it errors with candidates and points to
installs selectorinstall --force. A lone match is auto-selected; a stored selection wins even after prune (restore in place) or when it names a read-only shared root (path required when ambiguous).mise uninstallclears selections for that installation so requests can pick again.Supporting work includes catalog selection locking, receipt-based lookup for shared catalogs, link healing that respects selection, and docs/man/e2e coverage.
