Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to Migration can fail for a selected version, and recovery after an interruption can break links to an existing installation. Address both paths before merging. Security Architecture ReviewSecurity architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to Ordinary migration failures preserve the previous installation, but interrupted recovery can withdraw an existing installation shared by other tools or users. Cleanup failure can also cause a later rollback after migration was reported successful. These risks are bounded by explicit invocation and filesystem permissions. Retained concerns

173-180: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winPin the reinstall request to the captured concrete version.
request.requestkeeps the original floating request, for example a configuredlatestor a prefix. If that request now resolves to a newer version, the reinstall installs and catalogs the newer version.installation_of(&request)then either fails or returns the wrong installation. The failure branch restores the legacy directory, but the newer identity installation stays in the catalog. Migration then reports an error for a version that was never reinstalled.Build the request from
tv.version, and keep the install options from the original request. This follows the existing past review comment on this code.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

…ory cannot be renamed or removed If the old directory could be neither renamed to its finished name nor removed, it kept its moved-aside name and the next run undid a migration that had completed. A file with the finished name is now left beside it in that case, and recovery treats the directory as finished. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M454CHX7CDQ3C29F8Y6DY7AP
…shed one exactly Recovery used to read the state of an interrupted migration from the names of directories, which could not tell what the migration had made, nor whether a replacement had finished. Each migration now writes a journal under installs/.mise/migrations/ before moving anything: the version, and the installations of it that were complete before it started. The old directory is removed only after the journal records the migration finished. An unfinished one is undone: the old directory is put back and every installation of the version the migration made is withdrawn, under its install lock, while one that existed before is left alone. The same undo runs when a migration fails or its task is dropped, and the next run completes whatever it could not. …e that cannot be read block migrating A journal is now replaced atomically. One that cannot be read is removed with a warning (it says nothing about what its run made), and an old directory still moved aside without a journal is put back when its place is free. …, and skip leftover journal temp files Undoing a migration withdrew every installation of the version that had not existed when it started, so a variant the user installed between an interrupted migration and the next run was withdrawn too. The install now reports each directory it is about to write into, before writing anything, and the migration records those in its journal; undoing withdraws only them. Recovery also reads only journal files, ignoring what an interrupted atomic write left beside them. A new e2e test kills a migration while its replacement's postinstall runs and checks that the next run undoes and redoes it. …install does `mise installs migrate node@20` matched only a version named exactly 20, so it found nothing to migrate. A version now names the installed versions it matches. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M456QM2KXJP11KF7REAND0V5
…lock, and name only the newest version for @latest - The install now reports the directory it writes into only once it holds that directory's lock and has found it has to write, so an installation another install finished meanwhile, which the migration only reuses, is not recorded as the migration's. A report that cannot be saved stops the install before it writes. - `mise installs migrate tool@latest` names the newest installed version, not every version; other versions name the installed versions they start, as uninstall does. … a separator `tool@1.1` matched 1.10.x too, and an exact `1.0.0` also matched 1.0.0-rc1. A version now names the installed version it is when there is one, and otherwise the versions it begins up to a separator. … back over a version link without its journal - The migration's reinstall no longer requires a lockfile URL in locked mode: it moves a version that is already installed, which the lockfile may not list. - An old directory moved aside whose journal is gone or unreadable is put back only where nothing took its place. Beside a version link, which may be a finished migration's, both are kept and the user is told. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M45BDPNN3QBMTJ178FSEF287
…s own name, so it never blocks migrating again When a real directory took the place of one an interrupted migration moved aside, or a moved-aside directory had no journal, recovery left it as it was, and migrating that version kept refusing. The old directory is now renamed to .<version>.mise-kept (after withdrawing what the interrupted run made), its journal removed, and the user told where it is. … still has its receipt Withdrawing a replacement counted as done once its lock was taken, even when its receipt could not be removed, so the journal went and the next migration reused the unfinished replacement as complete. …, and strip the aside suffix once - A project's tool_config.locked policy applied to the migration's reinstall through the request's config source, so a version the lockfile does not list could not be migrated. … losing its config file Naming the reinstall as a command-line request dropped the config file that declared the tool, which its postinstall hook and templates use. Instruction countsNothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does. New, nothing to compare against: Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run. Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

mise installs ls/select(and #13951). Adds the explicit operation the identity install layout (#13678) promised for legacy installations: mise never moves them on its own, and now there is a command that does. Before: with
install_layout = "identity", installations made before the layout was turned on stayed ininstalls/<tool>/<version>forever. The only way to move one was to uninstall and reinstall it by hand, which breaks anything that recorded the old path in between. After:
<label>-<hash>directory, not copied, so files that record their own path (shebangs, venvs) are written for the new location. Then the old directory is removed and the version link takes its place, so a path that pointed into it (a venv's interpreter, an IDE SDK entry) still resolves. Runtime aliases (20 -> ./20.11.1) keep working through the link.installs/.mise/migrations/, records there every installation directory its install is about to write into (once the install holds that directory's lock and has found it must write), and marks itself finished only after the replacement is installed (postinstall included), checked and linked. The old directory is deleted only after that. If a run is killed or fails, the nextmise installs migrateputs the old directory back and withdraws exactly what the interrupted run was making, then migrates the version again; an installation it only reused is left alone.TOOLorTOOL@VERSIONarguments narrow it (node@20names the installed versions that start with 20, as formise uninstall, andnode@latestthe newest installed one); with none, every legacy installation moves.--dry-runlists the plan and what an interrupted run left.http:,rust,dotnet).mise installs.Validation:
e2e/cli/test_install_layout_migratecovers the dry run, migrating one version (reinstalled rather than moved, link in place, alias still resolving), a failed reinstall putting the legacy directory back, migrating the rest with no arguments, and recovery from each interrupted state written as a journal.e2e/cli/test_install_layout_migrate_interruptedkills a real migration while its replacement's postinstall runs and checks that the next run undoes and redoes it.AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-opus-5-5; version: 2.1.288.

Note
Medium Risk
The command mutates the install store and reinstalls tools, but uses journals, locks, and rollback paths to limit damage from failures or interrupted runs.
Overview
Adds
mise installs migrate(experimental, requiresinstall_layout = "identity") so users can opt in to moving pre-layout installs frominstalls/<tool>/<version>into hashed identity directories without breaking paths that still point at the old location. Each migration reinstalls the exact version from its backend (not a file copy), moves the legacy tree aside under a dot name, ensures
installs/<tool>/<version>becomes a link to the new install, then removes the old tree.--dry-runprints the plan; optionalTOOL@VERSIONfilters behave like uninstall naming (latest, prefix matching). Skips tools on legacy-only backends and installs whose recorded backend no longer matches the tool.Crash safety is handled via journals in
installs/.mise/migrations/, a global migrate lock, per-version locks, andrecover_interruptedon the next run (undo partial work, withdraw directories recorded through a newobserve_writes/note_writinghook in the install path).InstallOptions.ignore_tool_config_lockedkeeps lockfile policy from changing which version gets reinstalled during migrate.Docs, CLI usage spec, man page, and e2e tests cover dry-run, success/failure rollback, interrupted states, and postinstall interruption.
