Do not log partially redacted secret values.
If an error contains Authorization: Basic dXNlcjpwYXNz, this pattern masks Basic but leaves the credential in the debug log. It also leaves part of a quoted value such as token="first second" and does not match GITHUB_TOKEN=value. Replace the pattern-only approach with redaction that handles complete authorization values and quoted assignments, or log a safe error classification instead of arbitrary display text. Add these cases to the redaction test.
Based on learnings, log redaction must honor quoted values, and diagnostic logs must not retain credentials.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Stop URL credential matching at query delimiters.
For https://mirror.example?token=foo@bar, URL_CREDENTIALS consumes mirror.example?token=foo@. URL_QUERY_VALUES then cannot find the query parameter, and the log retains bar. Limit the credential match to characters before /, ?, or #, and add this case to the redaction test.
Based on learnings, URL userinfo matching must stop at URL delimiters.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Select the diagnostic test’s own log record.
If another GitHub test logs after capture_logs() clears the records, .find() can select that test’s record first. The assertion can then fail even when log_attestation_method_failure emits the correct summary. Rust runs tests in parallel by default. Isolate records by test thread, or use a test-scoped logger, before selecting the message. (doc.rust-lang.org)

…trust root is unreachable (#14036) <!-- entire-trail-link-start --> https://entire.io/gh/jdx/mise/trails/478 <!-- entire-trail-link-end --> When mise verifies a GitHub release's attestations, it passes as soon as any one of them verifies. If the others were skipped because the Sigstore trust root couldn't be fetched, nothing said so, and the debug line added in #14035 labelled the cause "attestation signature verification failed". Reported in [#14033](#14033): in a sandbox that blocks `tuf-repo-cdn.sigstore.dev`, installing `github:DeusData/codebase-memory-mcp@0.11.0` printed ``` INFO github:DeusData/codebase-memory-mcp@0.11.0 [3/4] ✓ GitHub artifact attestations verified ``` The two GitHub-internal attestations verified against the embedded root. The two public-good Sigstore ones (SLSA provenance and SBOM) need the TUF fetch, failed, and were never mentioned. ## What changes - A failure to load the Sigstore or GitHub TUF trust root is now its own error (`AttestationError::TrustRoot`) instead of being folded into a signature failure, including when GitHub's root is loaded as a retry after the embedded root rejects a bundle. Debug output for those attestations reads "could not load the TUF trust root needed to verify the signature". - When verification passes while some attestations were left unchecked for that reason, mise logs one warning: ``` WARN 2 GitHub attestation(s) were not checked because a TUF trust root could not be loaded; verification passed on the remaining attestations. This usually means the Sigstore or GitHub TUF repository (tuf-repo-cdn.sigstore.dev and tuf-repo.github.com by default) is unreachable, or a configured mirror served invalid metadata; run with -v for details ``` - The direct GitHub API path now logs each failed attestation at debug level too, and warns about trust-root failures. It still stops at the first attestation that verifies, so it only reports failures from bundles tried before that one. Previously it dropped them silently. Whether an install succeeds is unchanged: one verified attestation still passes. Only attestations that failed for a trust-root fetch reach `warn`. A tampered or mismatched bundle stays at debug, since a bad bundle next to a good one is not something the user can act on. The log text never includes the underlying error string, which can contain mirror URLs or credentials. ## Validation - `cargo test -p mise-sigstore --lib` passes. New tests check that an unreachable TUF repository produces a `TrustRoot` error with the new summary, that the GitHub retry keeps that category (and keeps other failures as verification errors), and that the warning fires once and only when something was skipped. Invalid-metadata failures share the `TrustRoot` category but are not exercised by a test. - `cargo clippy -p mise-sigstore -p mise-util --all-targets -- -D warnings` is clean. - I did not reproduce the full install from the discussion, because no public-good Sigstore bundle fixture exists in the repo. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) *AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-sonnet-5-5; version: 2.1.289.* <!-- CURSOR_SUMMARY --> --- > [!NOTE] > **Medium Risk** > Changes attestation error classification and user-visible warnings during GitHub release verification; install pass/fail rules are unchanged but operators may see new WARN lines when TUF is blocked. > > **Overview** > **Trust-root fetch failures are now separate from signature verification failures**, so users can tell when attestations were skipped because Sigstore/GitHub TUF metadata could not be loaded. > > Adds `AttestationError::TrustRoot` and maps TUF load errors in `production_trusted_root` / `github_tuf_trusted_root`. Bundle and GitHub source verification count those failures, log per-attestation debug diagnostics (without the old “cached” wording), and emit **one** `WARN` when verification still succeeds but some attestations were unchecked. The embedded→GitHub TUF retry path preserves `TrustRoot` when the retry fails for that reason. > > Tests add a process-global `TUF_ROOT_LOCK`, coverage for unreachable TUF URLs, retry error typing, and the aggregated warning behavior. > > Reviewed by [Cursor Bugbot](https://cursor.com/bugbot) for commit f23b09c. No warning appears when no attestations are skipped. * Verification can still succeed when one attestation is skipped if another verifies successfully. * GitHub attestation failure messages no longer describe verification as cached. <!-- end of auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

When cached GitHub attestations contain both verifiable and unverifiable bundles, mise now reports each failed verification method at debug level while continuing to accept an attestation that verifies successfully. Diagnostics use fixed, safe error categories rather than logging free-form errors.
The final outcome remains unchanged: a trusted source still succeeds, while an all-failure result falls back to GitHub's attestation API. The fallback diagnostic explicitly identifies that as an overall verification failure.
Validation:
cargo test -p mise-sigstore tests::github --libandcargo check -p mise-util.AI-assisted — Tool: Codex; model: OpenAI/GPT-5; version: unavailable.
Note
Low Risk
Observability and safe logging around existing verification behavior; no change to when attestations are accepted or when GitHub API fallback runs.
Overview
Cached GitHub attestation verification now emits debug diagnostics when individual bundles fail while others still verify, without changing success/failure outcomes.
Verification logic is split so in-memory
Artifactchecks can be tested directly. Per-method failures log fixed category strings viaAttestationError::diagnostic_summary()instead of full error text, reducing risk of leaking tokens or credentials from mirror responses. Overall debug lines distinguish “no attestation verified” from “succeeded despite N failed method(s).”The
mise-utilfallback path when mise-versions verification fails uses the same safe summaries in its debug message. Newmise-sigstoretests cover partial success, total failure logging, and secret non-leakage.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 0ad2e61. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo.
