A project .miserc.toml that sets ignored_config_paths no longer hides your global config when ~/.config/mise is a symlink into that project.

Example: with ~/.config/mise -> ~/dotfiles/mise/dot-config/mise and this in ~/dotfiles/.miserc.toml:

ignored_config_paths = ["mise"]

mise config ls from ~/dotfiles used to list nothing, because the ignore entry resolves to ~/dotfiles/mise and the global config's symlink target is under it. It now still lists ~/.config/mise/config.toml, while the project copy stays ignored.

Global and system configs are now matched against ignored_config_paths as discovered, without resolving symlinks. Ignoring ~/.config/mise by its own path still works, and non-global configs match exactly as before, so the Windows matching from #11818 is unaffected. The one behavior change: a global config can no longer be ignored only through its symlink target.

Reported in #14001. That report also showed duplicate rows in mise ls --all-sources, which I could not reproduce and this PR does not touch.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes how ignored and trusted config paths are resolved for global/system files, which affects config loading and trust gating, though behavior for non-global configs is preserved.

Overview
Fixes a case where a project ignored_config_paths entry (e.g. ["mise"]) could unload the global config when ~/.config/mise is a symlink into that project, because ignore matching followed the symlink target.

Global and system configs are now checked against ignored_config_paths using the path as discovered (without symlink resolution). Project configs still match via trust root and the existing canonical rules. Ignoring ~/.config/mise by its literal path still works; you can no longer ignore a global config only through its symlink target.

Call sites that filtered ignored configs now use is_config_ignored_via_setting instead of pairing trust-root and path checks with is_ignored_via_setting. Config discovery applies unique_by(desymlink) after the ignore filter so deduping does not mask ignore behavior.

Adds an e2e script covering dotfiles-style symlinks and the case where the global symlink target is the same directory the project names as mise/.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Ignore settings now distinguish between a global or system configuration’s symlink path and its resolved target, preventing project-level ignore rules from hiding global configuration unexpectedly.
    • Ignoring a global configuration by its own path now suppresses its settings, including when the configuration is reached through a symlink.
    • Configuration listings show the symlinked configuration path without exposing its target path.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Config ignore checks evaluate global and system config paths as written when those configs are symlinked. Trust checks use the config-specific ignore helper and persisted-ignore checks. Config path collection filters ignored paths before deduplicating resolved paths. An end-to-end test covers these cases.

Config-specific ignore path matching

The matcher adds checks that do not resolve symlinks. Global and system configs use their discovered paths, while other configs retain canonicalized matching. Config discovery and path collection use the config-specific helper and filter ignored paths before deduplicating resolved paths.
Trust checks and regression coverage
src/config/config_file/mise_toml.rs, src/config/config_file/mod.rs, e2e/config/test_config_ignored_paths_global_symlink
Trust checks use the config-specific ignore helper and check persisted ignores. The end-to-end test covers global config visibility through symlinks and exclusion when the global config path is explicitly ignored.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 5/5

[Medium risk] Fixes symlink handling in config file ignore logic.

The PR appears safe to merge; no blocking issue remains.

Summary

Keeps global and system configs available when a project ignore matches their symlink targets.

  • Checks ignore rules before removing duplicate real paths, so an ignored project spelling cannot hide an eligible global spelling.
  • Adds coverage for a global config whose target is also discovered as mise/config.toml.
  • The earlier, unnumbered folder-fragment finding is fixed: both callers pass the file to is_config_ignored_via_setting, and the test covers conf.d/git/mise.toml.
  • No new actionable issues found. Tests were not run.

Match global aliases using the configured global path.

When discovery starts at a project root containing mise/config.toml, and that directory is the target of ~/.config/mise, the local candidate can precede the global candidate. De-symlink deduplication keeps the project spelling, which is_global_config still recognizes as global. The project’s ignored_config_paths = ["mise"] then matches that spelling and omits the global config. Match the config by its configured global path at the shared identity boundary, while still allowing an explicit ignore of ~/.config/mise.
