Requested by Jeff

Stacked on #13951 (the opt-in identity install layout). Shortens the real path of every installation on Windows, where MAX_PATH is a recurring failure.

Before: with install_layout = "identity", an installation lived in %LOCALAPPDATA%\mise\installs\<label>-<hash>, the same depth as the legacy layout's installs\<tool>\<version>. Installers extract into that real path, so it is what counts against the 260-character limit.

After: on Windows, installations go into %LOCALAPPDATA%\mise\i\, seven characters shorter. The version links, runtime aliases and catalog stay in installs\, so paths people already use (an IDE's installs\java\21) keep working:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\mise\
  installs\
    jq\1.7.1 -> %LOCALAPPDATA%\mise\i\jq-ezjqmxa4   junction
    .mise\ catalog
  i\
    jq-ezjqmxa4\ the installation
  • MISE_INSTALL_STORE_DIR chooses where installations go on any platform (for example C:\m for the shortest path) without moving the links. It defaults to the installs directory, and on Windows to <data>\i unless MISE_INSTALLS_DIR is set, which keeps everything in that one directory as before.
  • Nothing changes on Linux or macOS by default, nothing changes with the layout off, and legacy installs are not touched.
  • Everything that looked for installations beside the tool directories now looks in the store: discovery, where/which/PATH, links (relative ../../i/<name> when the store is a sibling, absolute otherwise; junctions on Windows), uninstall/prune, catalog rebuild from receipts, the landlock sandbox, history exclusions, skills sync, and "is this a mise path" checks.

Validation: new e2e/cli/test_install_layout_store exercises a split store on Linux through MISE_INSTALL_STORE_DIR (install, links, PATH, catalog rebuild, uninstall, prune, reinstall into the same directory); a catalog unit test covers allocation and rebuild in a separate store; e2e-win/install_layout.Tests.ps1 now asserts the i\ store and passes 10/10 on a Windows runner; the existing layout e2e tests pass unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Tool installations can be stored separately from version links and the catalog. On Windows, the default store is the shorter i directory beside installs, unless MISE_INSTALLS_DIR is set; on other platforms, it defaults to installs.
    • Set MISE_INSTALL_STORE_DIR to choose a store location on any platform. Listing, PATH resolution, uninstalling, pruning, and skill syncing support separate stores.
    • A missing catalog can be rebuilt from installations in the store.
  • Documentation
    • Updated installation-layout and directory guides with store-location, Windows path-length, and caching guidance. For CI or offline workflows, cache installs and, when separate, the store; downloaded assets are not a supported cache.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes default install disk layout on Windows for identity layout and touches catalog, PATH, uninstall/prune, and link resolution—high blast radius but gated by experimental layout and covered by new e2e/unit tests.

Overview
Introduces MISE_INSTALL_STORE_DIR so identity-layout installations can live outside the installs tree while version links, runtime aliases, and the catalog stay under installs. On Windows with default paths, the store is %LOCALAPPDATA%\mise\i (seven characters shorter than installs\…) to ease MAX_PATH pressure; setting MISE_INSTALLS_DIR keeps the old “everything under installs” behavior.

The catalog and resolver now allocate, prune, lock, and rebuild from receipts in the store, emit relative link targets (../../i/<name> when the store is a sibling), and refuse unsafe MISE_INSTALL_STORE_DIR values that sit inside the installs directory. PATH, skills sync, sandbox read rules, history exclusions, env-cache hashing, and “is this a mise install path?” logic all treat the store as a first-class root (only <label>-<hash> children count when the store is separate).

Docs and e2e cover split-store workflows on Linux via env override and updated Windows layout tests for the i directory.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Identity-layout installations can now use a store directory separate from the installs root. Resolution, catalog recovery, and related integrations recognize both locations. Catalog metadata and version links remain under the installs root.

Changes

Separate install store

Layer / File(s) Summary
Store configuration and catalog paths
crates/mise-util/src/env.rs, crates/mise-util/src/dirs.rs, src/install_layout/catalog.rs
MISE_INSTALL_STORE_DIR selects the installation location. The catalog keeps metadata under the installs root and places installation directories and receipts in the store.
Store-aware resolution and lifecycle
src/install_layout/resolver.rs, src/backend/*, src/tool_purgatory.rs, src/toolset/*
Resolver and lifecycle operations recognize installations in known stores. Compatibility links use relative or absolute targets based on store location. Backend bookkeeping, install detection, and catalog recovery account for primary-store paths.
Runtime and skill integrations
crates/mise-util/src/path_env.rs, crates/mise-util/src/sandbox/landlock.rs, src/packslip.rs, src/cli/skills/sync.rs, src/system/history/tracked.rs, src/toolset/env_cache.rs
Install-path discovery and restricted-read rules include the store. Skill synchronization accepts multiple allowed install roots. History capture excludes the store, and environment cache settings include its path.
Validation and install-layout documentation
e2e-win/install_layout.Tests.ps1, e2e/cli/test_install_layout_store, docs/dev-tools/install-layout.md, docs/directories.md
End-to-end tests check store placement, links, catalog recovery, uninstall, pruning, and reinstall. The documentation describes store defaults and overrides, caching, catalog placement, and path-length constraints.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5637d

An unusual store path that uses .. can defeat the guard meant to keep the store out of the installs directory, so prune may treat it as a tool version. The CI cache documentation concern was reportedly addressed and is carried forward until confirmed. Both are bounded and affect opt-in or unusual configurations.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 5637d

Changing or sharing the storage directory can select files belonging to a different installation or let one configuration remove files another still uses. These risks depend on local storage configuration; a remote attack or privilege escalation has not been demonstrated.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Changing the store while retaining the catalog rebinds existing reservations to the same directory names in another location. A valid receipt there can belong to a different identity, yet lookup accepts it as complete without comparing its digest to the catalog candidate; removal accepts a receipt or the retained reservation. This can select or remove unrelated state, while prior payloads fall outside current-store discovery. The missing digest comparison predates the PR, but independent store rebinding introduces a new way to encounter mismatched state without changing the catalog.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Distinct primary installs roots can configure the same writable store, but allocation reservations and payload locks remain under each root. Where auxiliary tool/cache locks differ, operations on the same payload are not serialized. Even when those locks coincide, one root's uninstall or rollback can invalidate an installation another root still owns or uses. The split therefore weakens failure containment unless writable stores have exclusive ownership or shared lifecycle coordination.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The independently affected scope is the configured store and the installations or configurations consuming its payloads. Multiple primary roots can extend that scope by sharing one writable store. Sandbox access follows the configured subtree, but the inspected changes do not establish a remote source, tenant boundary crossing or privilege escalation.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A conditional integrity path is a retained catalog followed by selection of another store containing a same-named payload with a valid but different receipt. Lookup can report that payload as satisfying the original catalog identity, including identities selected using recorded pins. Deliberate exploitation requires control of that store or its contents; receipt substitution and resulting execution were not experimentally demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Receipts must contain internally consistent identities and match their containing directory names. Allocation compares occupied receipts with the requested digest when no reservation already authorizes the name. Skills pruning still requires a recorded link, an unchanged target and containment within an allowed installation root; adding the store does not remove those ownership checks.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Root-scoped identity locks and auxiliary cache-based tool locks remain useful within their namespaces. They do not provide a shared-store ownership or lifetime guarantee: receipt withdrawal, failure cleanup and uninstall operate on the physical payload path, so another catalog using that path can lose its completion marker or files.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind a catalog to a stable store identity and require explicit migration or fail-closed handling when that binding changes. Verify the payload receipt against the selected catalog record before reuse, publication or destructive cleanup.
  • proposed — Either enforce one owning catalog per writable store or introduce store-scoped locking and explicit shared-payload lifetime coordination. Validate store-switch, interruption and cross-root install/uninstall transitions against those ownership guarantees.

Include the install store in the CI cache guidance.

On Windows with the identity layout, caching only installs preserves links and catalog records but omits the installations under i. A restored cache cannot provide those tools offline. Tell users to cache the configured install store alongside installs when the paths differ.

On the two CodeRabbit notes outside the diff:

  • Existing Windows installs under installs\: not keeping compatibility here, deliberately. The identity layout is unreleased (it lands with feat(install): add an opt-in identity-based install layout #13951, which this PR stacks on), it is opt-in even for experimental users, and its docs say directory names and the catalog may change while it is experimental. If feat(install): add an opt-in identity-based install layout #13951 ships in a release before this PR, a Windows user who opted in would need mise install --force (or mise installs migrate, later in this stack) for those versions.
  • CI cache guidance: fixed in 3583f40. docs/directories.md now says to cache the install store with the installs directory when it is separate.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 5/5

[High risk] Restructures where tool installations are stored on Windows.

The reviewed update appears safe to merge; the outstanding PATH cleanup finding is fixed.

What we checked:

  • Old tool paths are removed: is_installation_name accepts every hash length the catalog allocates, so collision-length installation paths pass the same cleanup check as shorter ones.

Summary

This PR separates installation files from version links and the catalog. Windows uses the shorter i directory by default; MISE_INSTALL_STORE_DIR allows a separate store elsewhere.

  • Discovery, links, removal, PATH cleanup, and saved environments account for both directories.
  • The latest change fixes PATH cleanup for installation names lengthened after a collision.
  • No new actionable findings were accepted.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

…on Windows

Installations of the identity layout now live in an install store that can
differ from the installs directory. On Windows with the default installs
directory the store is `<data>\i`, seven characters shorter than
`installs`, so the real path that installers extract into leaves more room
under MAX_PATH. Version links, runtime aliases and the catalog stay in
`installs`, so `installs\<tool>\<version>` keeps working for IDEs.

MISE_INSTALL_STORE_DIR chooses the store on any platform; setting
MISE_INSTALLS_DIR keeps installations in that directory as before.

absolute even when MISE_INSTALL_STORE_DIR is relative.
- Resolver tests build links with link_value and put their stranger in the

- The CI cache guidance mentions the install store; prettier formatting.

- The relative `../../i/<name>` link is only used when the installs

- tool_link_path recognizes installations in the install store, so venv

…ies sharing a store share the lock

Installs directories with their own MISE_INSTALLS_DIR but the same
MISE_INSTALL_STORE_DIR took separate install locks for the same directory, so
two installs of one identity could write into it at once. The lock now lives in
the store (in the catalog's lock directory when the store is the installs

directories: a name is only taken for a directory that is free or whose
receipt is the same identity, so sharing a store shares its installations.

… mise install paths

With MISE_INSTALL_STORE_DIR pointing at a directory that also holds other
things ($HOME, the data directory), `mise x` and hook-env took every PATH entry
under it for a stale tool installation and dropped it. Below a separate store,
only an installation directory (<label>-<hash>) now counts.
