mise up asked mise-versions for every tool's latest release twice. When two callers wanted the same release at once, each saw an empty cache and each made the request, so the cache only helped the later of two sequential calls.

CacheManager::get_or_try_init_async_if now holds a per-cache lock across the fetch and re-checks the cache once it has it, so racing callers share one request. A new test runs three concurrent callers and asserts a single fetch; it fails without the lock.

Measured with mise --debug up in a home directory with about 15 tools (duplicates counted as repeated GET lines). Alongside the packslip change in the sibling PR, requests fell from 66 to 46; the output was identical.

Note

Low Risk
Localized concurrency fix in the async cache helper; behavior change is limited to coalescing duplicate in-flight fetches for the same cache instance.

Overview
Fixes a cache stampede in CacheManager::get_or_try_init_async_if: when several tasks miss the in-memory cache at once, they no longer each run the same async fetch.

Each CacheManager now carries an Arc<tokio::sync::Mutex<()>> (fetch_lock). After the fast path misses, callers await the lock, re-check cache_async, then only the first proceeds to disk/network fetch while others reuse the populated value.

A new concurrent_callers_share_one_fetch tokio test runs three parallel get_or_try_init_async_if calls and asserts the fetch closure runs once.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Prevented redundant fetches when multiple requests for the same uncached value run concurrently. Subsequent requests reuse a value fetched and accepted by the first request.
    • Serialized concurrent cache checks and fetches, avoiding duplicate work when no reusable cached value is available. Values that do not pass the cache’s acceptance check are not stored.

CacheManager::get_or_try_init_async_if checked its cache and then fetched with no lock, so concurrent callers of one key each made the same request. A `mise up` fetched every tool's latest release twice. Hold a per-cache lock across the fetch and re-check the cache once it is held.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

CacheManager clones now share an async mutex. Asynchronous cache initialization acquires the mutex and rechecks the cache before fetching. A concurrency test verifies that three callers return the same value while the fetch closure runs once.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5536f

The change reduces duplicate release requests for callers using one cache manager, but clones can still make repeated requests when a cache write fails. This is a bounded performance risk that can be accepted or addressed before merging.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 5/5

[Medium risk] Adds concurrency control to cache fetching.

The PR appears safe to merge, with no new issues found since the previous review.

Summary

Adds a per-cache lock to CacheManager::get_or_try_init_async_if so concurrent callers share one fetch.

  • Re-checks the cached value after acquiring the lock.
  • Adds concurrent_callers_share_one_fetch to check that three callers trigger one fetch.
  • Since the previous review, only the test’s tuple formatting changed. No new issues or rule violations were found.
