The http: backend could only authenticate with netrc Basic auth, so tools hosted behind a bearer token or API-key header could not be installed. A common case is a binary stored as an OCI blob on ghcr.io, which rejects Basic auth on /v2/ blob requests and wants Authorization: Bearer base64(token). Previously a headers entry in the tool options was silently ignored and the install failed with a 401.

The http: backend now takes a headers table. Values are templates, so the secret can come from the environment:

[tools."http:polaris"]
version = "0.9.2"
headers = { Authorization = "Bearer {{ env.GITHUB_TOKEN | b64_encode }}" }

[tools."http:polaris".platforms]
linux-x64 = { url = "https://ghcr.io/v2/acme/polaris/blobs/sha256:...", format = "tar.gz" }

The headers are sent with the artifact download, the version_list_url request, and the checksum_url requests mise lock makes.

  • Header values are marked sensitive so they stay out of debug output, and headers is ignored for install identity, so changing a token does not reinstall the tool.

  • An undefined env var fails the install rather than sending the literal template.

  • Headers are sent to the host in url only. On a redirect to another host, port, or scheme, every credential header is dropped for the rest of the chain, which is what GHCR's signed blob URLs need. This includes X-Api-Key-style headers, which reqwest would otherwise forward (it only strips Authorization, Cookie and Proxy-Authorization). To support that, requests carrying such a header follow redirects themselves; other requests are unchanged.

  • To send a header to another host after a redirect (for example a CDN that needs the same key), list the hosts per header with headers_forward:

    headers = { X-Api-Key = "{{ env.KEY }}", Authorization = "Bearer {{ env.TOKEN }}" }
    headers_forward = { X-Api-Key = ["cdn.example.com", "*.assets.example.com"] }

    Here only X-Api-Key reaches those hosts; Authorization stays with the url host. Hosts are exact names or *. plus a suffix (no bare *), forwarding never steps down to plain HTTP, and a name that is not in headers is an error.

Not included: built-in GHCR token handling and a bearer-token credentials file, which the original request listed as alternatives.

Tested with the new e2e/backend/test_http_headers (401 without the header, success with it, version_list_url, unset variable, cross-host redirect for Authorization and X-Api-Key, same-host redirect keeps the header), plus the existing test_http_lock_checksum and test_http_ls_remote_current_opts. Clippy with -D warnings is clean. mise run lint still stops on an unrelated pre-existing unused dependency junction warning in crates/mise-util.

Relates to discussion #14014.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes core HTTP redirect and credential handling for all scoped requests; mistakes could leak secrets on redirects or break authenticated downloads, though behavior is heavily tested and defaults to stripping credentials.

Overview
Adds headers and optional headers_forward to the http: backend so installs can authenticate with bearer tokens, API keys, and similar headers (not just netrc Basic auth). Values are Tera templates; missing env vars fail the install instead of sending literal {{ ... }}. Headers apply to artifact downloads, version_list_url, and checksum_url / lock flows; configured Authorization replaces automatic host tokens via with_host_auth.

The shared HTTP client now follows redirects manually when requests carry credentials reqwest would forward (e.g. X-Api-Key). By default, credential headers are dropped on cross-host/port/scheme hops (GHCR-style signed URLs); headers_forward allowlists per-header hosts (exact or *.suffix, never downgrading HTTPS→HTTP). Internal x-mise-forward-* headers carry rules through retries; get_text_cached_with_headers keys the in-process cache by URL plus a header digest (not raw secrets). Version-listing option digests now include table options like headers.

Docs, JSON schema, unit tests in auth.rs, and e2e/backend/test_http_headers cover redirect and validation behavior.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • HTTP backends can now send custom, templated headers with artifact downloads, version-list requests, and checksum lookups.
    • Headers are limited to the original host by default. You can allow specific headers to be forwarded to approved hosts on redirects; credentials are not forwarded to insecure HTTP destinations.
    • Header-aware caching keeps responses for different header values separate.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Listing options with table values are now included when calculating option digests.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for configuring request headers and redirect forwarding.

The http backend could only authenticate with netrc Basic auth, so tools
hosted behind a bearer token (for example OCI blobs on ghcr.io) could not
be installed. Add a templated `headers` tool option that is sent with the
artifact download, version_list_url, and checksum_url requests.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The HTTP backend now accepts templated request headers for artifact downloads, version-list requests, and checksum requests. Header-aware HTTP client methods send these headers and distinguish cached text requests by header values. The HTTP client also scopes credentials across redirects.

Changes

HTTP backend request headers

Layer / File(s) Summary
Header-aware HTTP and redirect handling
crates/mise-util/src/http.rs
HTTP client methods accept caller-supplied headers. Cached text requests include a digest of nonempty headers in the cache key. Credential-bearing requests use manual redirect handling that clears credentials when the origin changes and refuses HTTPS-to-HTTP redirects.
Header-aware fetch helpers
src/backend/static_helpers.rs, src/backend/version_list.rs
Checksum helpers and version-list fetching pass supplied headers to HTTP requests. Strict template rendering supports an optional version and propagates rendering errors.
Backend header validation and request wiring
schema/mise.json, schema/mise-task.json, src/backend/http.rs, src/backend/mod.rs
Both schemas accept string-valued headers. The backend renders and validates configured headers for version-list, checksum, and artifact requests. Table-valued listing options contribute to the listing digest.
Documented and tested header behavior
docs/dev-tools/backends/http.md, e2e/backend/test_http_headers, crates/mise-util/src/http/tests/*
Documentation and tests cover templating, redaction, authenticated requests, cache separation, and credential handling across redirects.

Changing a header token can leave a version listing stale and skip the expected authentication check. The impact is bounded, but the listing cache key should be corrected before relying on credential changes to refresh results.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 5/5

[High risk] Adds custom headers to HTTP requests for authentication.

The latest changes appear safe to merge; they preserve forwarding rules without sending internal headers to servers.

What we checked:

  • Internal headers reaching the server: send_once_inner splits out forwarding rules before sending through either the relay or the HTTP client. Both changed retry paths call it again.

Summary

Adds templated headers and per-header headers_forward options to the http: backend. Downloads, version lists, and checksum requests can use these headers, while caches keep different credentials separate.

  • The latest changes preserve forwarding rules during GitHub OAuth refresh and IP allow-list retries.
  • A unit test checks that the rules survive splitting and reattaching.
  • No new actionable issues or mounted-rule violations were found. No tests were run during this review.

reqwest only strips Authorization, Cookie and Proxy-Authorization when a
redirect changes host, so a header such as X-Api-Key set through the new
`headers` option would reach the redirect target. Requests that carry such
a header now follow redirects themselves and drop every credential header
when the host, port or scheme changes.

crates/mise-util/src/http.rs:832-858
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Separate checksum cache entries by request headers.

During mise lock, HttpBackend::resolve_lock_checksum builds headers from each tool version’s headers option and fetches the checksum URL through get_text_cached_with_headers. That method documents a same-headers precondition, but the backend accepts independent per-tool header maps and does not enforce it. The process-wide cache uses only the URL as its key and stores errors as well as response bodies. If two HTTP tools use the same checksum URL with different headers, the later lookup can reuse the first result without sending its own headers. It can use another tool’s response to resolve a checksum, or reuse an error even when its own request would succeed. Key cache entries by URL and headers, or bypass this cache for header-aware requests.

… platform

Checksum fetches and cached version lists were keyed by URL and options
alone, so two tools using the same URL with different credentials could
reuse each other's response. Both now include a digest of the headers,
and `mise lock` resolves `headers` for the target platform instead of the
host's.

Headers are dropped on a cross-host redirect. `headers_forward` maps a
header name to the extra hosts it may reach (exact host or *.suffix), for
servers that hand off to a CDN that needs the same credential. Unlisted
headers are never forwarded and forwarding never steps down to plain HTTP.

The artifact download and the version_regex listing sent only the

host credentials, as the other requests already did.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.
