Summary

The npm backend can now install a package straight from a git repository, the way the pipx backend already can. Previously this failed with invalid package name because mise looked the URL up in the npm registry.

mise use 'npm:git+https://github.com/presmihaylov/claude-security'
mise use 'npm:github:owner/repo@v1.2.0'

The version is the git ref (tag, branch or commit); latest is the repository's default branch. git+, git://, github:, gitlab: and bitbucket: specs are recognized. Registry lookups are skipped for them, and the embedded aube root dependency is written under an alias taken from the repo name.

Not in this PR: pinning latest to a commit SHA in mise.lock.

Fixes discussion #14043.

Testing

  • New e2e backend/test_npm_git installs from a local git+file:// repo at latest and at a tag.
  • Installed the repo from the discussion with the embedded aube.
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings is clean.

Note

Medium Risk
New install and version-resolution paths depend on git remotes and URL parsing; mistakes could affect installs or rolling latest, but registry packages are unchanged.

Overview
The npm backend can install CLI tools from git sources (git+https://…, github:, gitlab:, bitbucket:) instead of only the registry, using the ref as the version and treating latest as the remote default branch.

Git specs bypass registry version listing; for rolling latest on an unpinned URL, mise resolves HEAD via git ls-remote. Installs use npm-style URL/#ref specifiers, alias the dependency to the repo name in embedded aube package.json, and reject checksum for git sources. Lockfile validation and related paths use package_key / package_requirement instead of the raw tool name.

Docs describe git install usage; e2e test_npm_git covers git+file:// at latest and a tag. Unit tests cover URL parsing and requirement building.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Install npm packages directly from Git repositories using Git URLs or GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket shortcuts. Choose a tag, branch, or commit to install a specific revision, or use latest to install from the repository’s default branch.
    • Use mise use with Git sources without relying on a registry version lookup.
    • Git-based package sources are supported in manifests, including installs pinned to a specific revision.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The npm backend now recognizes Git-based package sources and resolves latest or explicit refs. It uses repository aliases and Git requirements in package installation and embedded-aube metadata. Documentation and tests cover supported source forms and installation from a local Git repository.

Changes

npm Git-source installs

Layer / File(s) Summary
Git source recognition and resolution
src/backend/npm.rs, docs/dev-tools/backends/npm.md
The backend recognizes Git URLs and hosting shorthands, resolves Git sources to latest or an explicit ref, and builds the corresponding requirement and repository alias. Documentation and unit tests cover these forms.
Embedded-aube install integration
src/backend/npm.rs, e2e/backend/test_npm_git
Embedded-aube dependency writing, lock validation, and package lookups use the Git-aware package key and requirement. The end-to-end test checks installs from a local repository at latest and tag v1.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 5/5

[High risk] Adds git repository support to package installation.

The PR appears safe to merge; no blocking issue remains.

What we checked:

  • IPv6 SSH ports stay intact: The new check excludes hosts containing [ from the rewrite. git_remote returns the SSH URL with its port unchanged.

Summary

Adds npm installs from Git repositories, including Git refs and hosted shortcuts. The latest update preserves bracketed IPv6 SSH URLs and their ports.

  • Previous fixes still strip explicit ref prefixes, preserve explicit latest refs, and keep embedded URL refs.
  • No new actionable issues or repository-rule violations were found.
  • jdx accepted remote re-resolution for unlocked latest installs because it matches pipx behavior and installed commits lack the information needed for offline reuse.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Include prepare when warning about skipped Git-package scripts.

If a Git package builds its CLI with only a prepare script, npm 11’s --ignore-scripts=true skips that build. This list omits prepare, so the new Git install path gives no skipped-script warning to explain the missing build output. Include prepare for Git sources without changing the registry-package warning. (github.com)

Redact credentials across npm diagnostics.

The checksum error exposes credentials because BackendArg::tool_name() preserves the Git URL userinfo and the error formats it directly. Other npm warnings and lock-related errors also format the same raw tool name. Redacting only this error would leave the same exposure elsewhere.

Use a shared credential-redaction helper for every npm diagnostic that displays self.tool_name(). The existing helper is private to src/install_layout/resolver.rs, so make it available to this code rather than adding a checksum-only workaround.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

eea40a6cdeae vs a0f59f503948 · measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.

## Summary

Git-based npm tool sources can include URL userinfo or query tokens.
Some mise-originated diagnostics formatted the source directly, so
values were conditionally exposed unless already registered for
redaction.

This follow-up to #14044 uses the existing identity-safe URL renderer
only at diagnostic boundaries: Git default-branch lookup failures,
checksum rejection, lock validation, warnings, lifecycle/aube errors.
Install requirements, Git remotes, and dependency identity retain the
original URL values.

## Tests

- Added synthetic percent-encoded userinfo and query-token checks
without registered redactions for checksum and lock errors.
- Added safe HTTPS and SSH display coverage, plus an assertion that the
raw Git install requirement is preserved.

## Validation

- cargo test --lib backend::npm::tests::git_source --ignore-rust-version
-- --nocapture
- cargo test --lib credentials --ignore-rust-version -- --nocapture
- cargo test --lib
backend::npm::tests::git_specs_are_detected_and_aliased
--ignore-rust-version -- --nocapture
- rustfmt --edition 2024 --check src/backend/npm.rs
src/install_layout/resolver.rs
- cargo clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets
--ignore-rust-version -- -D warnings

> [!NOTE]
> **Medium Risk**
> Touches security-sensitive logging and changes how `git ls-remote` is
spawned, which could diverge from the previous inherited-env helper for
Git authentication edge cases; install URLs themselves are unchanged.
>
> **Overview**
> Stops **git-based npm tool URLs** (userinfo and query tokens) from
appearing in logs, warnings, and errors while **install specs and real
Git remotes stay unchanged**.
>
> The npm backend routes user-facing text through
**`redact_credentials`** via new **`display_tool_name` /
`display_backend_name`** helpers, and applies redaction to
**`git_head`** debug/failure output (including stderr). **`git
ls-remote`** is run with **`tokio::process::Command`** so command traces
do not echo the raw remote. Git install validation is centralized in
**`git_package_install_spec`**, with redacted messages for
alias/checksum failures.
>
> **`redact_credentials`** is **`pub(crate)`** in the install-layout
resolver, with extra tests for `git+https` / `git+ssh` and
percent-encoded secrets.

## Summary by CodeRabbit

* **Bug Fixes**
* Git-source and package-manager diagnostics now redact URL credentials
and query-string tokens, helping keep sensitive information out of error
messages.
* Git URLs used for installation and Git operations remain unchanged, so
redaction does not alter the source used to retrieve packages.
* Git package specifications now validate repository aliases, reject
checksums for Git sources, and include the requested revision.
* Git revision lookups now report clearer errors when commands fail,
return invalid output, or provide no repository HEAD.
