Our analytics identity is not accurate enough. The distinct_id is the first provider login the server finds, so it can change partway through an install's life, and a Codex ChatGPT login gives one id to a whole Team because tokens.account_id is the workspace. We cannot count installs reliably or tell how many installs one person runs.

This keeps distinct_id exactly as it is, so PostHog charts and history do not break, and adds the data we need next to it.

  • Every event carries installId: the hash of the install's anonymous id, which never changes for the install.
  • New event install.owner_observed { ownerSource, ownerId, observedBy }, sent once per owner per server process:
    • connect: the linked T3 Connect account (server), or the signed-in Connect account of a client that connects.
    • openai: the user_id claim from the Codex CLI id_token or from T3's own ChatGPT sign-in. Not sub (one per login method) and not account_id (the workspace).
    • claude: oauthAccount.accountUuid from ~/.claude.json.
    • device: a random id per client device (localStorage on web and desktop, the existing relay device id on mobile). One device opening two environments links them, with no sign-in needed.
  • Clients send only SHA-256 hashes in two new WebSocket query params (clientOwner, clientDevice), and the server accepts only that shape. One shared helper hashes on both sides, so a Connect account gives the same owner id on every surface. The client's Clerk userId is the same value the relay stores as cloudUserId.

Owners are resolved into people at query time in slophouse, which keeps every event. Two Connect accounts are never merged, and weaker ids only attach an install to an owner.

Docs: docs/internals/product-analytics.md explains why distinct_id stays and how installs and owners work. docs/user/telemetry.md lists the hashed account ids we send.

Verification

  • distinct_id matches main exactly. A one-off test ran main's identity code and this branch's against the same files for 10 cases (no login, ChatGPT Codex, Codex plus Claude, API-key Codex, logged-in Claude, Claude without userID, malformed Codex and Claude files, Codex tokens without account_id, an existing anonymous id), and every hash matched.
  • vp test run for the telemetry, startup, ChatGPT auth and MCP core tests in apps/server; src/authorization and src/connection in packages/client-runtime; src/connection in apps/web; telemetryId in packages/shared. All pass.
  • New tests check that:
    • distinct_id follows the old rule while installId stays fixed as logins change;
    • a provider distinct_id still sends when the install id cannot be saved;
    • each owner source is read, and an API-key Codex login adds nothing and logs nothing;
    • owners are sent once, and every event carries installId;
    • the client sends only hashes.
  • I logged in to real Claude and Codex accounts in throwaway directories, ran the shipped reader once against those files, then logged out and deleted them. oauthAccount.accountUuid and the id_token user_id claim are present and parse.
  • tsc-rs --noEmit passes for server, web, mobile, client-runtime and shared. vp lint on the changed files reports only warnings that were already on main.
  • Not checked: a live server receiving these params from a real client.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR introduces automatic cross-client install and owner attribution in analytics, including hashed account and device identifiers propagated through authentication and WebSocket connection paths. The behavior is broad, enabled through the existing telemetry flow, and touches authentication-sensitive runtime code.

Telemetry now uses separate hashed install and owner identifiers. Client connections transmit owner hashes, and server code records owner observations from credentials, startup state, and WebSocket parameters.

The requested service-boundary change is supported. apps/server/src/ws.ts performs owner iteration and dispatches one analytics effect per decoded owner. Move this dispatch into AnalyticsService while keeping readClientOwners(request) in the WebSocket setup for request decoding.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not send analytics without installId.

When saving the anonymous ID fails, getTelemetryIdentityForHome keeps a provider-based distinctId but returns installId: null. AnalyticsService.record still buffers events, and sendBatch sends them without installId. This affects reachable events such as server.boot.heartbeat and client.connected, violating the documented requirement that every event carries installId.

Give recordOwners a named operation span.

Wrap the service operation with Effect.fn("AnalyticsService.recordOwners"). This keeps one span for the owner batch rather than adding a span for each owner. As per path instructions, “Use named Effect.fn spans for reusable service operations.”

distinct_id stays on the rule every build has used, so PostHog charts and

legacy owner source is no longer needed.

🤖 Claude Opus 5.5 responding on behalf of Theo

On the two outside-diff and nitpick items from the latest review:

  • "Do not send analytics without installId": not changing this. When the anonymous id file cannot be written, main today still sends events under the provider-based distinct_id. Requiring installId would drop events that main keeps, which this PR is designed not to do: distinct_id and existing counts stay exactly as they are. The doc overstated it, so docs/internals/product-analytics.md now says installId is sent when the server can save its state.
  • Wrap recordOwners in Effect.fn: done in 06ebda4, to match record.

Merges `pingdotgg/t3code` `main` at `e64766c56a` (367 commits from
`143ab1606d`) into the fork. It branches from `main`; no other merge PR
is open.

## Numbers

- Landed: 2630 files from `git diff --stat HEAD^1 HEAD`, against 2629 in
the upstream range. The gap:
- Kept deleted: `pair.ts`, `pair.test.ts` and
`useDiscoveredLocalServers.test.ts`.
- Kept as fork files: `branding.test.ts` and
`addBrowserSurface.test.ts`.
- Extra on the merge side: four ported fork browser tests,
`fork/ThreadParentLine.tsx` and `inventory.json`.
- Fork delta: 812 files, down from 817.

## Conflicts (40, each by its preflight verdict)

- **Upstream's test prune (pingdotgg#22557):** upstream's deletions win,
fork-only tests stay, and fork adaptations of deleted upstream tests are
dropped.
- Upstream's deletion accepted for the `ThreadDetailsPrRows`,
`PreviewEmptyState`, `previewEmptyStateLogic`,
`projectScriptEditor.permissions` and `terminalSessionAvailability`
tests.
- Four fork browser tests are ported to the new
`require-disposable-render` pattern: ThreadForkDialog,
MoatlessArtifactChip, PreviewView.frame and MobileSidebarDrawer.
- **`threadRoutes.ts`, `ThreadRouteView.tsx`, `ChatView.tsx`:** take
upstream's `unlistedThreadDetail` (pingdotgg#19724), plus three fork changes:
  - An unlisted thread is "missing" once its subscription has failed.
- A closed thread is not redirected by `archivedAt`, because it is
absent from a Moatless listing and still opens by URL.
  - `onOpenRelatedThread` shows its toast only for a deleted shell.

The `unlisted-thread-adoption` inventory entry now owns
`threadRoutes.test.ts` and `ChatView.tsx`.
- **`AGENTS.md` (`decide`):** kept the fork bullet and appended
upstream's test rules and browser-test section.
- **Upstream's change with the fork delta re-stated:** `BranchToolbar`
(`showWorkspaceControls`), `GitActionsControl`, `ChatOverlayHosts`,
`FilePreviewPanel`, `projectFilesQueryState`, `usePreviewSession` (on
upstream's `inactiveAtom`) and `useThreadActions`.
- **`getSidebarForkParentThreadId`:** upstream removed it, so it moves
into `fork/ThreadParentLine.tsx`.
- **New inventory entries:** the `branding-test` path policy and the
`preview-session-use-atom-value` duplicate-add exception.
- **Sweep:** 19 owned-concern hits, all upstream-owned and taken as
upstream's. No new workflow.

## Feature classification

### Usable as-is
- Mermaid rendering through pele (pingdotgg#21472) and project icon previews
(pingdotgg#20372).
- Dialog and composer polish, PR panel fixes and centred tables.
- The Waiting thread state (pingdotgg#21500), which shows once the backend sends
`blockedOnThreadWait`.
- The even-pace tick on Limits (pingdotgg#22408).

### Unsupported in Moatless / needs implementation
- `device.easAccount` and EAS Simulator device hosts (pingdotgg#21841–pingdotgg#21846).
Added to the `UnsupportedMethodError` union, and the Integrations page
that holds them is already flag-gated.
- `projects.listIgnoredFiles` and the `ignoredFileListing` capability,
which "Add project to another machine" uses (pingdotgg#22180). Added to the
union. The dialog falls back to tracked files only while the capability
is absent.
- `pullRequests.changeBreakdown` (pingdotgg#22189, pingdotgg#22255). Its union already
carries `UnsupportedMethodError`, and the tooltip drops the split when
the call fails.
- T3 Connect reachability (pingdotgg#22172).
- Scheduled-task webhook filters and dedupe (pingdotgg#22194, pingdotgg#22234).
- `lastEventLoopStall` (pingdotgg#22213) and the `previewClose` scope (pingdotgg#22156).
- `compactIdleThreads` and `autoCompactThreshold` (pingdotgg#21682).
- MCP diff tools (pingdotgg#15464), the install id (pingdotgg#21506) and the writing-style
setting (pingdotgg#22203).

### Backend behavior to consider reproducing in Moatless
- **Settlement and waits:** `blockedOnThreadWait`, orphaned follow-ups
and delegated waits (pingdotgg#21499, pingdotgg#22581, pingdotgg#20037, pingdotgg#20025).
- **Stop and wake:** `latestRunStopRequested` stops a stopped
usage-limit thread from auto-resuming (pingdotgg#21114). A wake run settles when
the provider never opens the wake turn (pingdotgg#19196). Snooze survives a run's
completion (pingdotgg#22202, pingdotgg#17118).
- **Runs and shells:** run failures are persisted (pingdotgg#19646), and shell
updates coalesce for a slow client (pingdotgg#14859).
- **VCS:** bare repositories (pingdotgg#17340, pingdotgg#16688, pingdotgg#18152, pingdotgg#20368), stack
layers (pingdotgg#20415, pingdotgg#20388), VCS safety fixes (pingdotgg#15036, pingdotgg#19802) and PR
provider robustness (pingdotgg#18780).
- **Other:** update and restart safety (pingdotgg#22253), terminal and checkpoint
performance (pingdotgg#21242, pingdotgg#21291), resource metrics (pingdotgg#22122), provider
polling (pingdotgg#18851) and tool-token expiry (pingdotgg#18552, pingdotgg#19491).

`docs/fork/gaps.md` is updated under *Methods the backend does not
dispatch* and *Runtime fixes upstream made to its own server*.

## Verification

Full `verify.mjs` run: every check except `test` passes (duplicate-adds,
tripwires, resolution-check, unsupported-methods with ADD 2 / DROP 0 /
KEEP 2, lockfile, fmt, lint, typecheck and build).

Test failures and what was done about each:
- **Machine failures seen in earlier merges:** `shared` `AgentScope`,
`t3` `OrchestratorReplayFixtures` and `provider-opencode`
`OpenCodeServerLedger`. The `GitVcsDriver` and
`RepositoryIdentityResolver` partial-clone tests fail because of the
sandbox's `insteadOf` rewrite.
- **New and environmental:** `t3` `ProviderInstanceRegistry` reads the
sandbox's own `ANTHROPIC_*` and `CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR`. With those unset,
all 9 of its tests pass.
- **`web`:**
- The fork's `AppRoot.test.tsx` broke on upstream's new `useEffect`
(pingdotgg#20886). It now stubs `useEffect` and passes.
- Four browser files failed to import in the parallel run and pass
alone.
- **Playwright:** 1.60 wants chromium build 1223, which this sandbox
lacks. Browser tests ran against 1243 through a symlinked
`PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSERS_PATH`.

* fix(shared): the mobile client's release reads stay on upstream's repository

apps/mobile is upstream's client and checks upstream's releases, so the
release page and index it shares with the CLI default to upstream. Satellite's
own CLI update passes RELEASE_REPOSITORY.

* fix(satellite): reject retired migration id 100 and split the release index helper

runSatelliteMigrations now refuses Revdoc's retired id 100, so the rule no
longer lives only in a comment. Satellite's CLI calls releaseIndexPageUrl with
its repository; cliReleaseIndexPageUrl remains the upstream wrapper the
unmodified mobile client imports. Comment fixes from the review.
