A looping Reanimated animation (the "Thinking" shimmer) committed to the shadow tree every frame. With commit pausing disabled, React's commit kept losing that race, so the JS thread spun and back did nothing. Turn on ANDROID_SYNCHRONOUSLY_UPDATE_UI_PROPS so transform and opacity animations update views directly on Android, and keep LoadingStrip's static width out of its animated style. Closes pingdotgg#19278 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped mobile bug fix that replaces the problematic looping shimmer implementation with a native-driver animation while preserving the existing lifecycle and presentation. The accompanying documentation is non-runtime, and no sensitive, schema, deployment, default, or static-analysis configuration is changed. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Reanimated compiles its package.json staticFeatureFlags into native code, but Expo's fingerprint only hashes package.json scripts. A flag change would ship as an OTA update that never reaches the binary. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The app-wide ANDROID_SYNCHRONOUSLY_UPDATE_UI_PROPS flag needs a store build and can drop onPress on Pressables inside transformed views, like the floating working control. Revert it, the fingerprint hash, and the LoadingStrip tweak. Instead, move only the looping "Thinking" shimmer to React Native's Animated with useNativeDriver, which updates views without shadow-tree commits. One timing covers the sweep and the pause so the native driver loops it. JS-only, so it ships with the next update. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Reanimated 4 DISABLE_COMMIT_PAUSING_MECHANISM preventShadowTreeCommitExhaustion React Native 0.88 feature flags official documentation
💡 Result:
**Yes—Reanimated’s official guidance pairs these flags:** enable Reanimated’s `DISABLE_COMMIT_PAUSING_MECHANISM` **only when** React Native’s `preventShadowTreeCommitExhaustion` is also enabled. Reanimated says this addresses scrolling jitter; enabling its flag without the RN flag can cause app unresponsiveness from React commit starvation. ([docs.swmansion.com](https://docs.swmansion.com/react-native-reanimated/docs/guides/feature-flags/?utm_source=openai))
For **React Native 0.88**, Reanimated 4.7’s release notes say it supports RN 0.86–0.88. The docs’ flag instructions are general, not specifically written for RN 0.88; I couldn’t verify the flag’s default in the published 0.88 implementation from the official sources available here. So don’t assume it is enabled by default. ([github.com](https://github.com/software-mansion/react-native-reanimated/releases?utm_source=openai))
The documented setup is to set `preventShadowTreeCommitExhaustion()` to `true` in RN’s native feature-flag defaults, then **build React Native from source** for that change to take effect. Reanimated’s flag is static, configured under `reanimated.staticFeatureFlags` in `package.json`, and requires rebuilding the native app. ([docs.swmansion.com](https://docs.swmansion.com/react-native-reanimated/docs/guides/feature-flags/?utm_source=openai))

Document the React Native feature-flag prerequisite.
Reanimated 4 requires preventShadowTreeCommitExhaustion when DISABLE_COMMIT_PAUSING_MECHANISM is enabled. State whether the shipped React Native build enables it. Moving the shimmer to native-driver Animated removes this loop's Reanimated commits, but other looping Reanimated animations can still cause commit starvation if the paired flag is disabled.

## Mobile looping animations
`apps/mobile/package.json` sets Reanimated's `DISABLE_COMMIT_PAUSING_MECHANISM` so keyboard
avoiding animates on iOS. Reanimated commits each animation frame to the shadow tree, and without
commit pausing those commits can starve React's: the JS thread keeps retrying its commit, the
screen freezes, and back does nothing. Release builds retry forever; dev builds abort with
`ShadowTree.cpp: assertion failed (attempts < 1024)`. Looping animations that stay on screen while
heavy content renders should use React Native's `Animated` with `useNativeDriver: true`, which
updates views without commits, not Reanimated's `withRepeat`. The running-thread shimmer in
`thread-work-log.tsx` is the example.
+When this Reanimated 4 flag is enabled, React Native's `preventShadowTreeCommitExhaustion` must
+also be enabled in the shipped native build. The native-driver shimmer removes this loop's
+Reanimated commits, but other looping Reanimated animations can still cause commit starvation

Closes #19278
Problem
On Android, if you open a thread while its turn is running and press back, often nothing happens. The screen freezes (the "Working 24s" timer stops), and in a dev build the app crashes about 50 s later with:
Back itself is fine. The JS thread is stuck, so the back press never gets handled.
Cause
The "Thinking" shimmer is a looping Reanimated animation, and Reanimated commits every animation frame to the shadow tree from the UI thread.
apps/mobile/package.jsonsetsDISABLE_COMMIT_PAUSING_MECHANISM(added in #5451 for iOS keyboard avoiding), so Reanimated never pauses while React commits. Opening a long running thread makes React's commit take longer than a frame. It loses the race every time and retries forever. Release builds don't have the assert, so they just hang.I checked this on a POCO F4. With the shimmer turned off, opening a running thread and pressing back worked 6/6 times. With it on, it froze on the first try every time.
Fix
The shimmer now runs on React Native's
AnimatedwithuseNativeDriver: true. That updates the native views without shadow-tree commits, so React's commits land again. One timing covers the sweep and the pause, so the native driver can loop it on its own. It looks the same as before. The change is JS-only and limited to the shimmer, so it ships with a normal update. There's also a short note in
docs/internals/performance-regressions.mdso the next looping animation doesn't bring the freeze back.An earlier version of this PR turned on Reanimated's app-wide
ANDROID_SYNCHRONOUSLY_UPDATE_UI_PROPSinstead. I dropped it because it needs a store build and, as CodeRabbit pointed out, it can make corePressables inside transformed views droponPress. The shimmer component is shared, so iOS gets the same change. I only tested it on Android.
Evidence
POCO F4 (Android 14), dev client, local test server, test data only.
The shimmer still sweeps the same way on the native driver:
