fix(mobile): the composer stays one row until the draft wraps - #20812
Conversation

Taking over this one for composer-chat-16. I am checking the remaining native wrap, resize and keyboard proof before changing the draft. I will leave it unpushed if those native behaviors cannot be verified in this environment. |

Blocked for composer-chat-16; no implementation changes or push. The Device tool returns “Agent device access is turned off for this environment.” This is disabled access, not a missing native client that an ensure/build step can repair. The mobile verification workflow requires stopping when the device tools are unavailable. Headless JS/type checks cannot prove UIKit/Android text measurement, wrap thresholds, pane resizing or keyboard transitions. The draft is still 8ab9c12, conflicts with main, and has no PR-added tests. Existing CI passes on that old head; I did not claim a verified rebuild. Pinned main 1451e7c still expands the focused composer to its 140px card, so this is not already fixed. To finish on a device-enabled environment:
No browser or JS-only proxy is accepted as proof of native wrapping. This batch leaves the draft open and unmerged. |
The thread composer jumped to a 140pt card as soon as the editor took focus, on every layout and platform, and the model picker only existed inside that card. In Android split view, typing also left the sidebar and rail in place and the two-line header on screen, so the keyboard ate most of the thread. The composer now keeps one row, with the model picker in it, while the draft fits. The picker shows the model name while the draft is empty and eases down to the provider icon once it has text. The native editors already reported their laid-out text height; both now report the widest line too, so the row/card decision compares the draft's natural width with the row's text area and the line count. There is no second measurement pass and no extra render per keystroke. A draft that wraps stacks above the controls at two to four lines, then scrolls, and returns to the row once it fits again, including when the pane widens. On Android split view, the composer reports its editing state to the layout, which hides the sidebar and rail and drops the thread header to one line while the soft keyboard is up. A hardware keyboard does not trigger it. Toggling or revealing the sidebar while typing dismisses the keyboard instead of flipping the user's sidebar preference. With scrolling off in the focused row, UIKit laid out only the first line, so a wrapping draft never moved to the card, and once in the card the used rect spanned the container, so it never came back. The focused row scrolls again, and both editors report a width only for a one-line draft, taken from its line fragment. The picker's width transition is iOS-only, since the Android composer runs no layout transitions. Co-authored-by: Pixel Perfect <me@pixp.cc> Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Opening the keyboard in split view hides the sidebar, so the feed widens. The feed learned its width from its own onLayout, and react-native-screens gave stack screens the width native last reported, a frame or more behind the pane. Rows measured once against the old width and again against the new one, so text overlapped and the list jumped twice. The feed now lays its rows out at the pane's settled width in the same commit that resizes the pane, and Screens t3.30 lays stack screens out at the stack's width in that commit instead of waiting for native. … steps aside The keyboard event that lets the composer follow the keyboard also hid the sidebar and re-laid out the workspace, in one commit. The composer stayed behind the keyboard until the whole workspace and feed had re-rendered. The workspace now applies the keyboard layout in a deferred render after the composer's commit. The exiting label kept drawing at its old place while the chevron moved into it on iOS, and the control shrank under it on Android. The label now leaves at once and only fades in, and on iOS the control clips content laid out at its final width while its frame eases there. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
When the pane narrowed, for example as the Android split-view sidebar returned after the keyboard closed, the reflow grew the visible rows in one batch. That pushed the feed past LegendList's near-end threshold, so maintainScrollAtEnd stopped following and the last rows stayed below the composer. A feed that was following the end when its width changed now pins the end again once the new sizes are in. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…move Opening the split-view sidebar kept the thread laid out at its old width, clipped, until the slide ended, then reflowed it. That late reflow is what showed as the feed catching up after the sidebar had landed, most often when closing the keyboard brings the sidebar back. The pane now takes its new width in the commit that toggles a pane, and holds still against the edge that does not move: a sidebar sliding in fills the strip beside it, and one sliding out uncovers the rest of the pane. Nothing reflows after the panes land. A hinge resize follows the same rule, and an inspector keeps the left edge still. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

With the keyboard up in split view, the sidebar button only dismissed the keyboard. That brings back a sidebar the keyboard had set aside, but one the user had hidden stayed hidden and needed a second tap. The button now dismisses the keyboard and opens it in one tap. ApprovabilityVerdict: Needs Human Approval Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR changes the default mobile composer interaction and coordinates native text measurement with Android workspace, header, pane, and feed layout behavior. It also updates a runtime native navigation dependency, making the overall change broader than a narrowly isolated fix. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |
On a phone or a narrow pane, focusing the thread composer always switched it to a tall card. That card took a large share of the screen even for a one-word reply.
The composer now stays one row, with the model picker in the row, until the draft would wrap. Then the draft stacks above the controls, showing two to four lines before it scrolls. It returns to the row once it fits again, including when a narrow pane widens. The picker shows the model name while the draft is empty and the provider icon once there is text. Removable attachments sit above the focused row.
To decide row or card, the native editors (iOS and Android) report the laid-out text size, and the composer compares it with the row's text area:
Android split view: while the composer has the soft keyboard, the navigation rail and the sidebar step aside, and the thread header drops to one line. Closing the keyboard brings them back. A hardware keyboard leaves the layout alone. Toggling the sidebar while typing dismisses the keyboard instead of flipping the user's sidebar preference.
Resizing the thread pane: the keyboard now resizes the thread pane on every open and close, so two problems that only the sidebar toggle used to hit became frequent:
The feed reflowed twice. It learned its width from its own
onLayout, and react-native-screens gave stack screens the width native last reported, a frame or more late. Rows measured against the old width, then the new one, so text overlapped and the list jumped away from the end. The feed now lays out at the pane's settled width in the commit that resizes the pane, and Screens t3.30 lays stack screens out at the stack's width in that commit. Form sheets keep the native width. The composer stayed behind the keyboard until the whole workspace had re-rendered, because the keyboard event that lets it follow the keyboard also re-laid out the workspace. The workspace now applies that layout in a deferred render after the composer's commit.
The feed could lose the end when it narrowed. The reflow grows the visible rows in one batch, past LegendList's near-end threshold, so
maintainScrollAtEndstopped following and the last rows stayed under the composer (most often with a draft that moves to the card as the pane narrows). A feed that was following the end when its width changed now pins the end again once the new sizes are in.When the sidebar came back (closing the keyboard, or toggling it), the thread stayed laid out at its old width, clipped, until the slide ended, then reflowed. The pane now takes its new width in the commit that toggles a pane and holds still against the edge that doesn't move: a sidebar sliding in fills the strip beside it, and one sliding out uncovers the rest of the pane. Nothing reflows after the panes land. A hinge resize follows the same rule; an inspector keeps the left edge still.
On a loaded emulator, the reflow held the slide back by up to about 0.7s, and narrowing showed earlier rows until the end pin landed. On a lightly loaded emulator after merging main, the strip shows for about 70ms, the sidebar slides in over about 150ms, and the feed stays at the end. Pixel's Fold should confirm how it feels. The earlier clip-then-reflow order is one revert away (7699114). A same-frame end correction would need a LegendList change: Android runs scroll commands before the mount that grows the content, and LegendList holds imperative scrolls until its positions settle.
Sidebar button while typing: it now dismisses the keyboard and opens a sidebar the user had hidden in one tap. It used to need two.
One frame with stale row positions remains between the reflow and the repositioned rows. LegendList applies row positions outside React's commit, so removing that frame would take a LegendList change.
Split out of #19987 by @PixPMusic, and rebuilt: the original measured the draft in a hidden 10000px-wide
<Text>on every keystroke, and kept a brand-word table for model names. The split-view typing behavior was ported into #19987 from #19424 by @t3dotgg.Verification: mobile typecheck, lint, and native static checks (swiftlint, ktlint, detekt) pass. Two reviewers (Opus and Sol) reviewed it. Opus found that the focused row on iOS never left one line, and that the card never returned to the row. It confirmed both by compiling the measurement code against UIKit. Both are fixed in 8ab9c12, using the measurement the reviewer verified in that probe. No new tests: the row-or-card rule is one line, and the risk is in native measurement.
