Preview releases dispatched from a feature branch stop before anything builds. Resolve T3 Connect public config declares environment: production, and that environment now admits only branch main and tags v*. Example: run 41128408610 from t3code/cua/linux-pip. The same branch passed on 2026-10-16 in run 38936900204, before the policy was tightened. This PR leaves the policy as it is.

Fix

A preview build should match nightly, so the only thing that changes is where the job gets its inputs:

• The environment. relay_public_config names its environment production for every channel except preview. For preview the name is empty, so the job runs with no environment. Stable and nightly are unchanged.
• Tracing. The relay client tracing read from Alchemy state runs for previews exactly as it does for nightly. alchemy state read --backend cloudflare goes straight to the state store without loading alchemy.run.ts, and it needs only CLOUDFLARE_API_TOKEN and CLOUDFLARE_ACCOUNT_ID. Both are set at repository level, not in production.
• Clerk and relay identifiers. The publishable key, JWT template, CLI OAuth client id and relay URL are the only inputs that exist solely as production variables. Previews read them from .env.example at the release commit. That file commits them as "the same public identifiers baked into official release builds", and PR macOS previews already build from it. Today it matches the production variables exactly, and https://relay.t3.codes is what RELAY_API_ZONE_NAME derives.
• Docs. docs/operations/release.md says where previews get their config and that CLOUDFLARE_API_TOKEN must stay a repository secret.

Nothing downstream changes. build_bundle, the desktop jobs, the tracing artifact, signing and npm publishing behave the same for every channel.

Nothing else assumes main

• assertReleaseSource already returns early for preview, and assertCommitOnDefaultBranch runs only for stable and nightly.
• finalize checks out and pushes main, but only for stable.
• setup-ci-deps uses main only to pick remote-cache read-write over read-only.
• release-desktop.yml has no branch assumptions.
• AUR, the hosted web app, marketing, and Discord already skip preview.

The v*-preview.* tag route

While this was broken, previews went out by dispatching the workflow on a v*-preview.* tag, which tag:v* admits and the tag-push trigger skips. I would not make that the documented fallback. A branch dispatch works again with this change, and the tag route leaves an extra tag behind for every preview. It was never documented, so there is nothing to remove.

Validation

• Empty environment name. GitHub does not document what an empty name does, so I checked a public workflow that relies on it: Kenix3/libultraship docs.yml. Its github-pages environment admits only main. Fork PR runs evaluate the name to '' and run the job without the environment (run 37998635210).
• Public config step. I extracted the public_config script from the YAML and ran it. The preview output from .env.example is byte-identical to the production output built from the production variables. A key missing from .env.example fails the job.
• actionlint 1.7.12. It reports the same 17 findings as main (Blacksmith runner labels, concurrency.queue, github.run_started_at) and nothing new.
• vp run check:changed passes.
• Not dispatched. A preview run moves npm's t3@preview dist-tag. The first preview dispatched from a branch after merge is the end-to-end check.
