fix(web): terminal controls no longer cover the first line - #23373
With one terminal open in the right panel, typing a long command on the first prompt line puts its end and caret underneath the floating split/new/close toolbar. The bottom terminal drawer has the same overlap.
Change
Place the single-terminal controls in a row above the terminal at every viewport width. Reuse the split-sidebar action markup, and keep drawer buttons below its existing resize strip. The terminal refits through its existing resize observer. Committed shell and capture fixtures reproduce the layout.
Scope and approval
Fixes#19536
GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/19536
Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. The accepted #19536 describes this overlap and its maintainer comment approves a separate controls row. Related #19073 is closed; no competing open fix was found.
Verification
Capture-fixture follow-up: real filesystem-watcher validation passed for unarmed errors, a marker produced before ready(), watcher consumption, and executing a shell path containing both spaces and an apostrophe. Scoped fixture lint and formatting passed.
Reproduced on main e07595714a in the real web dev app on Linux/Chromium, 1280×800: first-line command text goes underneath the controls. Checked the fix at 33a8e6513d: the separate row clears the command.
vp test run src/components/ThreadTerminalDrawer.test.ts in apps/web: 3 passed.
vp lint src/components/ThreadTerminalDrawer.tsx test/fixtures/terminal-layout in apps/web: passed.
vp run typecheck in apps/web: passed, with existing Effect suggestions.
git diff --check origin/main...HEAD: passed.
vp run knip:check: incomplete; process ended with exit 143 during VM resource contention.
Purely visual fix; no static-markup regression test was added. Two independent code reviews returned MERGE.
Web panel and drawer share the changed component. Electron wraps web but was not run on this Linux host: cannot-verify desktop. Native mobile uses a separate terminal UI and is unaffected by this component change. No server, contract, provider, agent-tool, or connection behavior changed.
Superseded: the historical evidence in this section is replaced by the full-tree captures in Evidence at the end of this description.
These are historical real-app comparisons: before restores the baseline terminal component in the capture checkout; after is clean 67d7573. Their terminal component blobs match current main and this PR head respectively. They are not full-tree captures of the latest main merge. Each column identifies the captured source above.
Environment: Linux, Chromium 154 web, en-US/UTC, DPR 2, scale 1, terminal font 12, frozen wall-clock labels at 2026-10-21T22:30Z. W is 1440×900 CSS; N is 390×900 CSS. Narrow images are 780×1800; wide images are scaled whole-viewport 1280×800 exports. Drawer height is 280 CSS px. Each static pair uses identical input bytes and terminal columns.
All 16 historical images were visually inspected as a contact sheet; required first-line pending input is present. Panel canvas moves from y=52 to y=74 (22px); drawer canvas moves from y=621 to y=649 (28px). The toolbar now occupies its own row above the text. On narrow layouts the old actions cover the right end of that first line; after it is below the actions. Whole app framing, sheet/backdrop, and composer remain visible. These comparisons do not isolate unrelated whole-app revision changes.

Diffs are absolute RGB channel deltas multiplied by 8 and clipped to 255. Pixels are zeroed unless their maximum channel delta exceeds the named threshold. Threshold 8 suppresses small differences; neither diff proves that all changed pixels belong to this fix.
Interaction recordings
The following historical chapters show toolbar hover, splits, return to single and creation of another surface. Source binding for these movies is unverified. Timestamped narration accompanies each chapter; the index includes paired checkpoint captures and both difference images. The panel before core disconnects at confirmation and continues in its separate return chapter.
3.301s: Settled single terminal; deterministic shell prompt.; 8.287s: Hover the four toolbar actions.; 20.195s: Split horizontally; seed and reset both shells.; 65.276s: Four panes; attempt one more split and verify count stays four.

What else changed: the floating rounded/shadowed action box becomes a full-width row with a separator and shared header button styling. Panel text moves down 22 CSS px; drawer text moves down 28 CSS px, including 6px clearance below its resize strip. Available terminal height and grid refit accordingly. Some historical split checkpoints have differing session numbers and terminal-column reflow; those differences are shown in the index. No claim of zero unrelated pixel changes is made.
The final evidence audit accepted all eight historical still pairs and independently reproduced all 40 difference images. Historical coordinate-click footage shows successful drawer splits, and split-to-single returns are visible.
Unverified: current full-tree interaction source binding; matched first-line typing and New-close-return flows; current-head drawer button-top activation and paired resize-strip drag/restoration. The two interaction matrix rows remain incomplete. Historical movies and stills are supplementary for these interactions. Electron/macOS is also unverified (cannot-verify desktop).
Implemented and reviewed with Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6.1-Sol through the Claude Agent and Codex harnesses in T3 Code.

Interactions
Each pair was recorded simultaneously on both builds with the same tool steps. A magenta caption (pointer-events:none, outside the terminal) shows [t] step on screen; the narration file lists the same timestamps and logged geometry.
Hover all 4; elementFromPoint(center, top+2): before (top 630) and after (top 627) both hit their own button for all 4. Real click at top+2 on Split H → panes 1→2 on both. PASS (after: buttons start at strip bottom 627, strip does not steal them). Sidebar probe after split: header buttons top 622, top+2 → RESIZE-STRIP, top+8 → button, identical before/after (pre-existing limit, not a regression).
2→3 panes, close Terminal 4 and Terminal 3 with alertdialog Confirm, single again: after row returns (canvas 649, buttons 627); first line typed fully visible after, tail covered before. Then 20 more chars wrap to row 2 and Enter prints output. PASS
Heights 280 → 430 → 280, persisted across drawer toggle (both). After: action row above canvas at every height (canvas = top+28); before: pill over row 1 at each height. Max clamp not reached at W. PASS
Typing: last 8 cols visible after, hidden under pill before. Maximize: x=0 w=1440, canvas 74 after / 52 before; restore returns to x=901 w=539 on both. Return: 3 panes → close 2 (confirm) → single, 22px row returns (canvas 74), first line visible. PASS
New → 2nd right-panel tab (Terminal 6); each tab shows the 22px row above canvas (74) after vs pill (52) before; closing Terminal 6 (confirm) leaves Terminal 1 single and unchanged. PASS
What else changed
One fewer terminal row after (right panel W: 46 → 45 rows; drawer N: 15 → 13 rows) — the cost of reserving the 22px/28px row. Columns unchanged (68 / 42 / 183 / 48).
Reserved row is always there for a single terminal, even when the first line is short (e.g. maximized panel at 1440px, where before had no actual overlap for this content). After adds a border-b divider under the row.
Git panel Changes badge differs in the W drawer stills (top-right card): BEFORE counts the untracked fixture files I copied into its checkout; AFTER has them tracked. Evidence-setup artifact, not an app change.
Prompt cwd in newly spawned panes shows the checkout dir (…/pr-23373-before/apps/server vs …/pr-23373/apps/server).
Tree delta unrelated to the PR: main 8d3b061121 is 14 commits past the PR's merge-base e07595714a (188 files, +3618/−5308 between the two trees); the PR itself only changes ThreadTerminalDrawer.tsx (+56/−88) and adds the fixtures. None of those 14 commits produced a visible difference in the captured surfaces beyond the items above.
No regression observed in the after build: split (incl. the 4-pane limit), New/groups, right-panel tabs, close + confirm, drawer resize/persist, maximize/restore all behave identically to before.
Verification log
Proof audit pass 1 (Claude Opus 5.5): built the matrix: 14 still pairs, 14 recordings. Dropped: drawer maximize (not offered), panel resize strip (drawer only), drawer tabs / panel groups (not offered), Electron.
Proof audit pass 2 (Claude Opus 5.5): VERDICT: SUFFICIENT (audit). SHAs and component blobs re-derived from both checkouts and matched provenance; exact-difference images for S-P1-N-L and S-D1-W-L rebuilt with 0 differing pixels; all 168 links return 200; uploaded hashes match local files. Closes the earlier audit's gaps: full-tree source binding, matched first-line typing, New/close/return to single, drawer button-top activation, resize-strip drag and restore.
Unverified rows: S-WRAP-P-N-L, S-WRAP-D-N-D, S-WRAP-D-W-L (S-WRAP-D-N-L captured in light instead of dark), S-SB-D-W-L, R-HIT-D-N-L, R-HIT-SB-D-W-L as a separate light recording (dark probe captured), R-RESIZE-D-N-D and the drawer max-height clamp, R-SPLIT-P-N-D, the drag-ends-at-start-height restore branch, permission-unavailable rows, Electron/macOS (cannot-verify desktop). Panel maximize is absent at 390px on both builds. The thresholded-diff pixel counts were not recorded.
Pre-existing, not changed by this PR: with two or more drawer terminals, the sidebar header's top ~6px sits under the resize strip (probe at top+2 hits the strip on both builds).
Evidence gathered and audited with Claude Opus 5.5 through the Claude Agent harness in T3 Code (three delegated agents: audit, capture, audit).
… line
The split/new/close controls for a single terminal floated over the top-right
of the terminal viewport, hiding the end of the first row (long prompts, typed
input, and the cursor) in both the right panel and the bottom drawer.
They now sit in a 22px row above the terminal, reusing the same controls the
split sidebar header already renders. The ghostty surface refits through its
own resize observer when the row appears or disappears. Fixes#19536.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This focused web fix places the existing terminal controls in dedicated rows, preventing them from covering the first line while preserving their behavior. The remaining changes are isolated visual-regression fixtures and test harness utilities, with no production schema, infrastructure, security, billing, or default-setting impact.

The terminal controls now use a shared action row, positioned outside the terminal text area. New fixtures configure terminal sessions, replay drawer and right-panel interactions, and record browser metadata and checkpoints.
The single-terminal header and split-sidebar header use shared split, new-terminal, and close-terminal controls. Drawer and panel headers use different row heights.
The manifest defines fixture settings. The seed script updates an isolated project’s script settings. The shell provides controlled terminal prompts and input helpers. Capture helpers freeze time and record browser, viewport, font, and layout metadata.
Fixture driver and setup apps/web/test/fixtures/terminal-layout/driver.mjs, setup.mjs
The driver records provenance, tool calls, readiness, and screenshot checkpoints. Setup opens the selected terminal surface and prepares terminal input.
Strengthen the replay close assertions before relying on these captures; the PR remains mergeable with bounded test follow-up.

Explanation
The title "fix(web): terminal controls no longer cover the first line" matches the main change. The diff moves the single-terminal controls (split, vertical split, new, close) out of an overlay on the terminal and into a dedicated row above the text. That row clears the first prompt line in both the right panel and the bottom drawer. The title is concise, uses a conventional commit prefix, and describes the primary change from the user's perspective.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template's sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. The Problem section states the overlap and its reproduction context. The Change section explains the fix and why the drawer and panel share the component. Scope and approval links issue #19536 and cites a maintainer comment approving a separate controls row. Verification lists the focused tests, lint, typecheck, and a before/after evidence set for UI changes, along with what could not be checked (Electron/macOS, knip:check). The description is long and dense, and it includes some historical or superseded evidence. Even so, the required information is present and the check is mostly complete.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#19536] requires the terminal toolbar to stay outside the terminal text area. ThreadTerminalDrawer.tsx moves the single-terminal actions from an absolute overlay into an in-flow row. The row is 22px in the panel and 28px in the drawer, with drawer padding below the resize strip. The row renders for every single-terminal viewport. The shared terminalActions markup preserves the split, new, and close actions and reuses the split-sidebar controls. The PR evidence reports visible first-line text and cursor in panel and drawer layouts. No linked issue requires an additional automated test.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The production change is limited to the terminal action layout and shared markup in ThreadTerminalDrawer.tsx, which directly implements [#19536]. The added apps/web/test/fixtures/terminal-layout files provide isolated capture, replay, shell, and provenance tooling for the reported layout defect. The fixtures exercise the affected panel and drawer states and support the reported visual verification. No unrelated product behavior or server, contract, provider, agent-tool, or connection changes are shown.

…click and quotes the shell path
The project-script step clicked a button and then awaited ready("G"), but the
driver only armed its milestone watcher on Enter, so ready() read an undefined
handle. The driver now exposes arm(), Enter uses it, ready() fails clearly when
unarmed, and replay arms before the click. Replay also quotes shellPath the
same way setup.mjs does, so paths with spaces or apostrophes run.

Fixed both capture-fixture findings in 7164868151: arm the filesystem watcher before the project-script click, report an unarmed wait clearly, and quote the shell path consistently with setup.
A real filesystem/shell harness passed for early marker delivery, unarmed and consumed watchers, and a script path containing spaces and an apostrophe. Scoped lint and formatting passed; two fresh full-diff reviewers returned MERGE. The production toolbar code is unchanged.

Assert the owner state after each non-final close.
The current wait checks only that ${surface} canvas exists. In the reachable multi-pane, right-panel, and drawer scenarios, that condition can remain true after targeted removal fails, the wrong terminal is removed, or the wrong replacement becomes active. Read the owner-specific terminalIds and activeTerminalId before closing, then assert that the target ID is absent and that the owner’s expected replacement ID is active.

After Confirm, add an owner-specific assertion that the drawer has no terminal IDs or that the right-panel terminal surface is removed. Do not reuse close() unchanged because its remaining-canvas wait cannot validate the last terminal.

* fix(web): play completion sounds without delay (pingdotgg#29146)
Completion alerts waited two seconds after the client received a completed thread state. Audio was also fetched and decoded only when an alert needed to play, adding a first-play delay.
Notify immediately when the thread shell reports completion, and preload both sounds when a user gesture unlocks audio. Keep completion deduplication and suppression for existing, archived, and stopped runs.
This intentionally removes the continuation grace for completion alerts. A completed run can now notify before an automatic continuation starts. The sidebar's two-second placement grace and server settlement behavior remain in place.
Validation: `vp run check:changed` passes after merging current main, including 40 affected tests, formatting, lint, unused-code checks, affected typechecks, and React compiler checks. Tests cover immediate completion, duplicate suppression across reconnects, preloaded audio reuse, and retrying failed loads on alerts without retrying on every gesture. Audible timing has not been verified in a live client.

* fix(desktop): prepare macOS x64 bytecode under Rosetta (pingdotgg#29484)
* fix(server): keep PR watches active after host failures (pingdotgg#29450)
## Problem
PR watches stopped after eight failed host reads, so a prolonged network outage prevented later CI and review updates from reaching the thread.
## Change
Keep watches active after provider failures reported as `failed`. Read detail and activity concurrently without allowing an activity failure to cancel or hide a permanent detail failure. Repeated known permanent failures still stop the watch and notify the agent; rate limits still pause reads. Non-rate-limited GitHub HTTP 403 responses and GraphQL `FORBIDDEN` responses now use a distinct `forbidden` reason so access refusals are counted instead of retried indefinitely. GraphQL error types survive the client mapping, after the existing requested-reviewer fallback.
The provider's `failed` category also includes unclassified host and decode errors. Those continue retrying at the existing two-minute cadence until the watch ends or is stopped. A fixed outage deadline would recreate the recovery failure for longer outages.
## Scope and approval
This is a focused fix for an obvious bug in existing PR watch recovery, covered by the small bug-fix exception in CONTRIBUTING.md. The changes cover watcher recovery, a GitHub failure classification needed to preserve permanent-error handling, and their regression tests. The new server-side `forbidden` reason does not change RPC contracts or add settings.
## Verification
`vp run check:changed` passed, including 154 tests across five files. Regression coverage includes a 30-minute outage followed by one CI-success notification, mixed activity/detail failures, resetting a prior failure count, and repeated forbidden reads stopping the watch. Provider tests distinguish HTTP 403 and exclusively permanent GraphQL refusals from retryable HTTP 503 and mixed or untyped GraphQL errors. The mixed-failure and GraphQL classification cases failed before their fixes. Seven focused requested-reviewer fallback/refusal tests also pass.

* fix(desktop): prepare macOS x64 bytecode under Rosetta (pingdotgg#29484)

Problem
With one terminal open in the right panel, typing a long command on the first prompt line puts its end and caret underneath the floating split/new/close toolbar. The bottom terminal drawer has the same overlap.
Change
Place the single-terminal controls in a row above the terminal at every viewport width. Reuse the split-sidebar action markup, and keep drawer buttons below its existing resize strip. The terminal refits through its existing resize observer. Committed shell and capture fixtures reproduce the layout.
Scope and approval
Fixes #19536
GitCafe: https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/issues/19536
Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. The accepted #19536 describes this overlap and its maintainer comment approves a separate controls row. Related #19073 is closed; no competing open fix was found.
Verification
Capture-fixture follow-up: real filesystem-watcher validation passed for unarmed errors, a marker produced before
ready(), watcher consumption, and executing a shell path containing both spaces and an apostrophe. Scoped fixture lint and formatting passed.Reproduced on main e07595714a in the real web dev app on Linux/Chromium, 1280×800: first-line command text goes underneath the controls. Checked the fix at 33a8e6513d: the separate row clears the command.

Two independent code reviews returned MERGE.
Web panel and drawer share the changed component. Electron wraps web but was not run on this Linux host:
cannot-verify desktop. Native mobile uses a separate terminal UI and is unaffected by this component change. No server, contract, provider, agent-tool, or connection behavior changed.Evidence

Electron/macOS is also unverified (
cannot-verify desktop).Implemented and reviewed with Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6.1-Sol through the Claude Agent and Codex harnesses in T3 Code.
