Problem

Unbound scheduled tasks created through MCP (schedule_task) hardcode baseRef: "main". On a repository whose default branch is anything else, every run fails during worktree provisioning with ref_not_found, before the prompt starts. The expected behavior is that the task starts from the project's default branch.

Reproduce: add a project whose default branch is master, call schedule_task without binding it to a thread, then run_scheduled_task_now. The thread fails with ref_not_found.

Change

OrchestratorMcpService resolves the base ref when a task is created or unbound from its thread:

Use the primary remote's default branch if its tracking ref exists, and always name the remote (origin/master, upstream/develop). Launch resolves a bare name through a local branch's configured upstream, or else assumes origin, so a bare name could fetch the wrong branch or none. Fetch does not update a recorded HEAD, so it can name a branch that has since been pruned, which is why the ref is checked.
If that gives nothing, try main then master on the remote, then main then master locally. Checking the remote first means a stale local master can't take over from origin/main, and a local main can't take over from origin/master.
If none of those exist, keep main, as resolvePrBase does.

Limitations:

A repository whose default branch is neither main nor master and has no recorded remote HEAD still fails as it does today. I did not fall back to the current branch, because a recurring task could then silently run from a feature branch.
If the remote's default branch was renamed and the old tracking ref has not been pruned, origin/HEAD still names it, so the task starts from the old branch, as it did before this change. Detecting that needs a network call during schedule_task, which I left out.
Tasks saved before this fix keep their stored main until they are recreated or rebound.
This does not ask the source control provider for the default branch, which Unbound scheduled tasks always fail on repos whose default branch isn't "main" #27488 suggests. That would add a new dependency to this service for the one case above.

Not changed: the Settings form, whose main default is user-editable, and lastRunStatus reporting succeeded for a run that failed (also noted in #27488, and a separate problem).

Scope and approval

Fixes #27488. The issue has not been triaged yet. I'm submitting this as a focused fix for an obvious bug: the branch name is hardcoded, and the change is limited to how this one value is resolved, plus its tests.

Verification

Focused tests: added to OrchestratorMcpService.test.ts. Against the old service code, 9 of the 12 new cases fail; the other 3 expect main, which the old code always returned. All pass with the fix. vp run check:changed passes (format, lint, knip, graphql, typecheck, tests).

Running app: I ran vp run dev against isolated state with --no-seed and connected as an outside MCP client. On real Git repositories I created a project with the Replay (dev) provider, called schedule_task and run_scheduled_task_now, then read workspace_strategy_json from the database and compared the commit in the worktree the app created. I ran the same scenarios against the old code and against this branch:

Not checked: the Settings form displaying and saving a stored origin/master base ref, a real provider turn (Replay only), an agent calling the tool from inside a thread, Windows or Linux hosts, and the pinned Node version (I ran Node 24 on macOS, the repo pins 26.12.1). Unbinding an existing task (bindToCurrentThread: false) is covered by a focused test only, not in the running app. No UI code changed.

Model and harness: Claude Opus 5.5 (implementation, tests, verification) in T3 Code via Claude Code, and GPT-6.1 Sol (review) in T3 Code via Codex.

Partly addressed in 130b62a: the remote default is now only used if its tracking ref exists, otherwise it falls back to main and master on the remote, so a renamed and pruned default branch picks up origin/master.

Not addressed: if the old tracking ref was not pruned, origin/HEAD and the ref both still look valid, so the task starts from the old branch. Tasks already did that before this PR. Detecting it needs a network call during schedule_task, so I left it out and listed it as a limitation in the PR description. Leaving this open for a maintainer to weigh in.

@tuanvumaihuynh The supplied code confirms the partial fix: resolveScheduledTaskBaseRef checks the remote tracking ref before selecting the recorded default. If that ref is missing, it checks remote main and master.

The remaining case is distinct: an unpruned tracking ref can resolve successfully even when it no longer names the remote’s default branch. The existence check does not establish freshness.

settings edit displayed the remote branch correctly; saving retained origin/master. two settings "run now" reruns created separate worktrees and completed real provider turns at the same correct commit.
a bound task ran in its original thread. updating it through schedule_task with its existing id and bindToCurrentThread: false selected origin/master; its next run completed in a new worktree with the expected commit and marker.

A completed run can now notify before an automatic continuation starts. The sidebar's two-second placement grace and server settlement behavior remain in place. Validation: `vp run check:changed` passes after merging current main, including 40 affected tests, formatting, lint, unused-code checks, affected typechecks, and React compiler checks. Tests cover immediate completion, duplicate suppression across reconnects, preloaded audio reuse, and retrying failed loads on alerts without retrying on every gesture.
