perf(mobile): text files open in half the time on a remote host - #27850
The mobile file viewer waited for a file's metadata before requesting its contents, so every uncached text file paid for two round trips in a row. On localhost that's invisible. Over Tailscale or T3 Connect, with 100–300ms round trips, the extra trip shows up as a spinner. Images and other media previews still wait for metadata, as before.
Change
Both requests now go out together instead of the contents request waiting for metadata. Metadata is only needed to recognise directories. If the path turns out to be a directory, the early read gets back a cheap "not a file" error, which the directory view never shows. Media files are still excluded by name, as before.
The decision moved into a small pure function, needsWorkspaceFileContents in filePath.ts, so it can be tested. The new case in filePath.test.ts checks that a text file needs its contents while metadata is pending and that a directory doesn't. Swapping main's logic back in makes it fail.
Scope and approval
There's no prior issue or discussion. This fixes one serial-request problem on one screen. It changes when requests are sent, not what the screen shows. I searched issues and PRs for the file viewer and request ordering and found none. Web has no such gate.
Verification
iPhone 17 Pro simulator, Release build. The app was paired through a TCP proxy that adds a fixed one-way delay. Each open was timed with JS timing marks, from the start of the push to the next frame after the contents arrived: 5 launches × 4 files per arm per delay, interleaved, n=20 each, with no timeouts.

On main the contents request goes out only after metadata returns. With this PR both go out together.
JS marks don't show when the file is visible, so I also recorded the screen at 60fps with 150ms one-way. In these representative recordings, one per build, code first appears about 583ms after the push on main and about 283ms with this PR. On main the "Loading file…" spinner covers the extra round trip.

Dropped connection: when the socket was dropped just before an open, both builds held their requests until the connection came back, then finished (main 3416 and 2985ms, this PR 3555 and 3136ms). Sending the requests together adds no stall on reconnect.
Screens: settled screenshots of a text file, a directory, a missing file, an image and a Markdown file are pixel-identical to main below the status bar.

On a remote host the file viewer waited for the metadata lookup before
asking for the contents, so every uncached text file paid two serial round
trips. Read both at once; a directory answers the read with a cheap
not-a-file error that its view never shows.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Mobile text-file reads now run alongside metadata requests, reducing sequential remote-host latency. Existing access checks and media exclusions remain unchanged, with no product-default or persistent-data changes.

The thread file screen now uses needsWorkspaceFileContents to decide when to load file contents. The helper checks the relative path, metadata kind, and active view mode. Tests cover a source file with unresolved metadata and a directory.

needsWorkspaceFileContents excludes directories, null paths, and video or audio previews. It returns true in source mode, or for Markdown and delimited-preview paths in preview mode. ThreadFileScreen uses the helper, and tests cover unresolved metadata for a source file and a directory.

Explanation
The title names the main change: text files in the mobile file viewer now open faster on remote hosts. The diff matches this. The change sends the metadata request and the file-contents request in parallel, instead of waiting for metadata before requesting contents, and the title's 'perf(mobile)' prefix fits the change. The title is specific and follows the conventional commit style that the template recommends.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template closely. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem and Change sections clearly explain the serial round trip, the parallel request fix, and the directory handling. Scope and approval says there is no prior issue or discussion, and gives a reason for the fix. Verification is detailed. It has focused tests, timed measurements at two delays, traces, recordings, a dropped-connection check, and screenshot comparisons, and it lists what was not checked. It also names the model and harness, as the template asks. The Scope section does not link a triaged issue or maintainer approval. The template says a very small, focused fix of an obvious bug may qualify without one, and the author gives that justification, but a reviewer should confirm it qualifies. The Scope section is the only point that needs a reviewer decision. The title line is also not repeated, but the template does not require that.

Add a screen-level concurrency regression test.
filePath.test.ts:54-58 checks only the helper. A future change can add !metadataPending back to ThreadFileScreen while needsWorkspaceFileContents still returns true, and this test will still pass. The screen test should keep metadata pending and assert that readFile starts before metadata resolves. This protects the remote-host round-trip improvement.

Add a screen-level concurrency regression test for ThreadFileScreen that keeps
metadata pending and verifies readFile starts before metadata resolves. This
should catch a metadataPending gate in the screen even while
needsWorkspaceFileContents continues to return true.

On the suggested screen-level concurrency test: thanks. I kept the test at the decision helper on purpose. The repo's testing guidance asks for the lowest layer that catches the regression and leaves out wiring tests. The helper test fails with main's logic, and a render test of ThreadFileScreen would need to mock the environment query, navigation and appearance just to cover the one line that calls it.
