What does this PR do?

This PR combines 67 open PRs about the CLI into one: bun run, flag parsing, bunfig.toml, .env, --filter and workspaces, bun init, shell completions, and bun test options. 17 were applied as they were (a few were trimmed afterwards), and 50 were ported by hand, whole or in part.

The baseline is the release, Bun 1.4.3. A command that exits 0 on 1.4.3 and does the right thing should do the same thing after this PR. Where an original PR went past that, only the part that doesn't break working commands is here (see "Left out on purpose"). The exceptions we know of are in the first table.

Commands that work on 1.4.3 and behave differently now

This is every command line we know of that exits 0 on 1.4.3 and now prints something else, writes something else, or exits with a different code. The rows most people could hit come first. Commands that already fail on 1.4.3 aren't in this table. They're in the per-area lists below it.

Command 1.4.3 Now PR
bun index.ts, bun run index.ts, bun -e, bun -p, bun -, and node index.js under bun run --bun The root bunfig.toml is ignored It's read. preload runs, and [define], [loader], jsx*, [console], smol, env, [install] auto and the other runtime keys apply #29310
bun repl with root [define] MODE = "1" typeof MODE is "undefined" "number". The REPL doesn't run preload, same as with a file in the cwd #29310
bun run start, bun start with root [run] silent = true Prints $ echo started Doesn't print it. [run] shell, bun, elide-lines and noOrphans apply too #29310
From the root: bun run --filter a start, where start is bun index.ts. Same for --workspaces, --parallel, --sequential, and a member's lifecycle scripts that call bun The child bun ignores the root file The child runs in packages/a, so it reads the root file #29310
bun test with root [test] preload, onlyFailures = true, or any other [test] key Ignored Applied #29310
bun test with root [test] coverage = true and coverageThreshold = 0.9 1 pass, exit 0 Coverage table, error: coverage below coverageThreshold (functions 90.00%, lines 90.00%), exit 1. Same through bun run --filter a test #29310
bun build index.ts (also --compile) with root [define] MODE = "1" Emits typeof MODE Emits "number" #29310
The root bunfig.toml has a syntax error: bun index.ts, bun -e, bun test, bun build, node under --bun exit 0 The parse error, exit 1. The same file in the cwd does that on 1.4.3. bun run index.ts still runs and exits 0, but prints the parse error. bun run start prints nothing new #29310
cd scripts && bun x.ts, where package.json and bunfig.toml are one level up and scripts/ has neither Ignored Read #29310
cwd is packages/a/src, and packages/a/bunfig.toml exists Not read Read. The root's file isn't, because the nearest file wins and nothing is merged #29310
[test] coverage = false + bun test --coverage (or --coverage-reporter=...) No coverage Coverage #40348
coverageReporter = "lcov" + --coverage-reporter=text Writes coverage/lcov.info, no table Prints the table, doesn't write lcov.info #40348
coverageDir = "a" + --coverage-dir=b. [test.reporter] junit = "a.xml" + --reporter-outfile=b.xml Writes a/lcov.info, a.xml Writes b/lcov.info, b.xml #40348
dots = false + --dots. onlyFailures = false + --only-failures. randomize = false + --randomize or --seed=N The flag is ignored The flag wins #40348
seed = 1 + --seed=2. rerunEach = 3 + --rerun-each=1. retry = 2 + --retry=0. retry = 0 + --retry=2 The key wins The flag wins. A flaky test that passed on a retry now fails under --retry=0 #40348
[define] X = "1" + bun run --define X=4 m.mjs X is 1 4. The tables merge per key: with [define] A, B and --define C=3, all three are defined (1.4.3 drops C) #38599
[loader] ".foo" = "text" + bun run --loader .foo:json m.mjs text json. The file's other extensions still apply #38599
[console] depth = 1 + bun run --console-depth 5 m.mjs Depth 1 Depth 5 #38599
jsxFactory = "h" + bun run --jsx-factory k m.jsx (also --jsx-fragment, --jsx-import-source) h k #38599
A [macros] table + bun run --no-macros m.ts The macro runs, exit 0 error: Macros are disabled, exit 1, like bun --no-macros m.ts #38599
preload = ["./b.js"] + bun run --preload ./a.js m.mjs (also --require, --import, BUN_INSPECT_PRELOAD) Only b.js loads b.js, then a.js. preload = [] doesn't drop --preload anymore #38599
[install] auto = "fallback" + bun run --no-install m.mjs Asks the registry Doesn't #38599
[run] shell = "bun" + bun run --shell=system x, and the reverse The key wins The flag wins #33198
[run] bun = false + bun run --bun x Real node Bun as node #33198
smol = true + bun index.js or bun -e. [test] smol = true + bun test. smol = false + bun run --smol Normal heap Small heap. No output changes #38611
cd packages/a && bun run build, where packages/a/package.json has a syntax error (merge-conflict markers, say) and the root has a build script. Same from packages/a/src Runs the root's build, exit 0 The parse error with file and line, then error: Script not found "build", exit 1. A file, a node_modules/.bin entry or a PATH binary called build still runs, with no new output #45113
bun run --if-present build next to a package.json with a syntax error Runs the parent's script, or exits 0 silently The parse error, then error: Script not found "build", exit 1. (bun run --if-present bake starts the built-in bun bake instead of exiting 0) #45113
bun run --sequential a -- b c (or --parallel) Three jobs: a, b, c One job, a b c, like bun run a -- b c #41717
bun run --sequential build -- 'touch M' Runs touch M as a command touch M is an argument to build #41717
bun run --parallel --filter x build -- --watch --watch is dropped --watch is passed to build #41717
FORCE_COLOR=1 bun run --filter '*' x | cat (any pipe or file) The live view, with repeated panes and cursor-up codes (24 or more lines for 3 lines of output) Plain pkg x: line records, byte for byte what 1.4.3 prints without FORCE_COLOR. No $ script header, and Exited with code 0 instead of Done in N ms. The scripts still inherit FORCE_COLOR=1, so their own output is still colored #41983
FORCE_COLOR=1 bun --watch x.js > out 2> err (also --hot and the dev server's reload) Writes \e[2J\e[3J\e[H into both files on reload Writes it into neither. With | tee log in a terminal, it clears through stderr only #41983
FORCE_COLOR=1 bun -e 'console.clear()' 2> err The clear code lands in err Nothing is written #41983
A progress bar with FORCE_COLOR set and stderr not a terminal (bun create <template>, or bun install with BUN_INSTALL_PROGRESS=1) Cursor-move codes (\e[26D\e[0K) One line per refresh, as without FORCE_COLOR #41983
bun run --filter pkg-a p (also --workspaces, --parallel, --sequential) The script sees the root's npm_package_name, npm_package_version, npm_package_json and npm_package_config_*, and no npm_lifecycle_event It sees pkg-a's values and npm_lifecycle_event=p (prep in the pre script). If the package has no version or no config, the root's value is still there. Nothing that's set on 1.4.3 becomes unset #38101
bun run all, where the root script all is bun --filter app tag tag sees npm_lifecycle_event=all npm_lifecycle_event=tag #38101
In a terminal: bun --filter a dev, --workspaces, --parallel, --sequential Scripts write to a pipe and see no FORCE_COLOR, so most tools print without color Scripts get FORCE_COLOR = 3, 2 or 1, by the terminal's color depth. Not in a pipe, not when FORCE_COLOR, NO_COLOR or NODE_DISABLE_COLORS is set, and under --parallel / --sequential only if stdout and stderr are both terminals #35613
PORT=${PORT:-3000} ${PORT:-3000} 3000 #36698
Z=$Y, Y=$X, X=1 Z is $X 1 #36698
FOO=$FOO-bar and A=${A} $FOO-bar-bar and ${A} -bar and an empty string #36698
URL=u:$PASS@h above PASS=abc\$def u:abc\$def@h u:abc$def@h #36698
URL=$PW@h above PW=pa$$w0rd pa$$w0rd@h pa$@h. process.env.PW is pa$ on both #36698
PORT=${BASE:-3000} above BASE=$OTHER, with OTHER unset $OTHER Empty, because BASE is set (to an empty string) #36698
A=$B, B=$A Both are $A Both are empty #36698
A=a$B, B=b$A ab$A and bab$A ab and b #36698
C=/, then C=$C-x $C-x-x -x #36698
.env.local has FLAGS=$FLAGS,b, .env has FLAGS=a $FLAGS,b,b ,b. It still doesn't see .env #36698
K=123$567, MONEY=$100, PW=Tr0ub4dor&3$9x 123, empty, Tr0ub4dor&3 123$567, $100, Tr0ub4dor&3$9x. \$5, ${1}, $NAME are unchanged #36030
1=one, A=$1 A is one $1. ${1} still expands #36030
NODE_ENV=development bun build --production a.js (also test, staging, or BUN_ENV) Inlines "development", keeps dev-only branches, emits jsxDEV, uses the "development" export condition, and reads .env.development under --env "production", dev-only branches removed, jsx from react/jsx-runtime, .env.production. For a minified NODE_ENV=staging build, use --minify instead of --production. With nothing exported, the only difference is that Object.keys(Bun.env) in a macro lists NODE_ENV last #45101
bun --no-env-file b.js (or BUN_OPTIONS, or bunfig env = false), where b.js calls Bun.build({ env: "inline" }) or env: "PREFIX_*" .env values are inlined, and later Bun.spawn children and Workers get them The bundle has process.env.SECRET, and children and Workers don't get the values. Same for HTML routes with [serve.static] env = "inline", macros, and builds inside bun test --no-env-file (also --parallel). With --env-file=custom.env added, only custom.env's keys are inlined #45445
bun --no-env-file build.ts, where Bun.build() bundles a module that calls a macro and imports through a NODE_PATH that only .env sets Builds Could not resolve: "dep". bun build --no-env-file fails the same way on 1.4.3 #45445
bun run --if-present ls (a name that's only a program on the system PATH) Runs /usr/bin/ls Exits 0 and prints nothing. node_modules/.bin entries still run #31878
bun init, bun init -y, -m, <folder> next to a package.json that doesn't parse, or whose root is [], "x", 1, null exit 0, no message. package.json is replaced by the blank scaffold, the other files are written, bun install runs The parse error (or error: package.json root must be an object) with the file's absolute path, exit 1, nothing written. In a terminal this comes before the template picker, so picking React there fails too. --react*, a 0-byte file and a whitespace-only file are unchanged #41807
bun init -y with "main" or "module" set to "index", "./index", "lib/index", "data.json", "bin/cli", "addon.node" Writes a Hello via Bun! stub at exactly that path, so bun . runs the stub instead of index.js Writes a stub only if the entry has a JS or TS extension #41741
bun init --react (and =tailwind, =shadcn) next to a README.md Overwrites it ○ README.md (already exists, skipping) #41741
bun init over "type": "commonjs" or "private": false Rewrites them to "module" and true Doesn't touch them. Both keys are still added when they're missing #44992
bun init with @types/bun in dependencies or optionalDependencies, or typescript in either of those Adds a second entry (devDependencies, peerDependencies), and the nested install warns Duplicate dependency Doesn't add it. If nothing is added, the nested bun install doesn't run, so its output is gone too #45836
node - with Bun as node, and a file called - in the cwd Runs that file Reads the script from stdin, like Node #38566
node --conditions=custom app.cjs with Bun as node (bun --bun run srv) The flag is ignored and the default export is loaded The custom export is loaded #44611
Bun itself has an IPC channel (fork, stdio: "ipc", pm2) and starts bunx tool, bun run <bin>, --filter scripts, bun exec, --shell=bun scripts, or install scripts The child sees NODE_CHANNEL_FD=3 but never got the fd. Bun prints warn: Unable to start IPC socket, and Node fails with write EINVAL The two NODE_CHANNEL_* variables aren't passed, and process.send is undefined. bun run <script> and bun file.js still get the channel #41739
"workspaces": ["packages/*", "packages/legacy"] + bun run --filter legacy build (also --workspaces, --parallel, --sequential) build runs twice Once #43357
Linux: "workspaces": ["packages/Core", "packages/lower"] + bun run --filter '*' x Core is skipped silently Both run #29941
Linux: packages/Core and packages/core both exist The lower-case one runs One of them runs, and readdir order picks which #29941
bun --cwd p run dev, bun --env-file .env.x run dev, bun --preload ./x.ts run app.ts, and the same with -r, --define X=1, --port 3000, --conditions c and so on, also through BUN_OPTIONS Prints the bun run usage, exit 0, runs nothing Runs it #41511
bun --help init, bun -h init Scaffolds ./init/ Prints bun init's help, writes nothing #41511
bun --cwd=p init -y Scaffolds ./init/ Scaffolds p/ #41511
bun --cwd= init The flag is ignored, scaffolds ./init/ Could not change directory to "", exit 1 #41511
bun --bun init -y, bun --smol init -y, BUN_OPTIONS=--smol bun init -y, bun --silent init -y sub Scaffolds ./init/ Scaffolds the cwd, or ./sub/ for the last one #39379
bun --print=<code> test, bun --eval=<code> test Runs bun test and ignores the code Evaluates the code, with test in process.argv #38578
bun --print test, bun --eval test (any command word) Runs that command Evaluates it (ReferenceError: test is not defined, exit 1). bun -p test and bun -p install are unchanged #38578
bun run -e 'console.log(1)', bun run --eval=..., bun run -p 5, bun run --print=5 Prints the bun run usage, exit 0 Evaluates the code #38678
bun test --reporter=junit --reporter=dots --reporter-outfile=j.xml Dots, no j.xml Dots and j.xml #41881
bun test --reporter=dots --reporter=junit --reporter-outfile=j.xml Normal lines and j.xml Dots and j.xml #41881
bun build --jsx-side-effects with no other --jsx-* flag (also bun run, bun test) The flag is ignored. JSX calls get /* @__PURE__ */, and --minify-syntax drops an unused <Boom /> No annotation, and the element is kept. Nothing else in the output changes #41920
A bunfig.toml that already has [test] isolate = true or [test] filePatterns Unknown keys, ignored Obeyed #44682
[loader] "" = "ts" in bunfig.toml. Bun.build({ loader: { "": "text" } }) The "" key is dropped It's the loader for files with no extension #41996
jsx = "react-jsxdev" in bunfig.toml + bun run y.js Runs, and prints Invalid jsx runtime on stderr Runs, no error #41643
bun run lint <args over 128 KB> on Linux The shell can't start. Prints the E2BIG error, runs postlint, exits 0. With --silent, prints nothing Exits 1 at the first failure, and prints the error under --silent too #38022
The same spawn failure in a lifecycle script of bun pm pack, bun publish, bun pm version, or a bun create script Continues as if the script had run Prints the error, exit 1 #38022
bun run bad (the script exits 3) when the parent process ignores SIGCHLD (trap "" CHLD, some supervisors) Prints an ECHILD error and exits 0. A script that succeeds also prints one ECHILD error per script error: script "bad" exited with code 3, exit 3. A script that succeeds prints no error #38022
Bun.spawnSync(...) and await Bun.spawn(...).exited under the same parent exitCode is null, and exited throws ECHILD Both give the exit code #38022
bun install under the same parent, with an optional dependency whose postinstall exits 0 Takes the script for a failed one and deletes the package and its .bin links, exit 0 The package stays installed #38022
An unhandled rejection, plus process.on("exit", () => process.exit()) exit 0 exit 1 #38116
bun --watch x.js or --hot on a script that has finished and has a beforeExit listener The listener fires about once a second while idle Once per run, and once more after each reload #38658
bun --preserve-symlinks main.mjs or NODE_PRESERVE_SYMLINKS=1, where main.mjs imports a symlink to a file (also require.resolve, import.meta.resolve, Bun.resolveSync, --preload link.ts) The module has its real path, and its imports resolve from the real directory It has the link's path, and its imports resolve from the link's directory. So a linked file that imports a neighbor of its target now fails with Cannot find module, and a file reached both directly and through a link is evaluated twice #36757
bun --preserve-symlinks-main link.ts, bun run --preserve-symlinks-main ./link (the flag, not the env var) Bun.main, process.argv[1], import.meta.path and __filename are the real path <cwd>/link.ts, and its imports resolve from there #36757
bun --preserve-symlinks-main pkg/main through a linked directory (flag or NODE_PRESERVE_SYMLINKS_MAIN=1) Bun.main is the real path, and import.meta.main is false The link's path, true #36757
bun build --preserve-symlinks main.mjs The flag does nothing Imported links (files and directories) have the link's path. An entry point that's a link is still resolved to its target #36757
A compiled executable with --dns-result-order=ipv4first or --inspect* from --compile-exec-argv or BUN_OPTIONS The flags show up in process.execArgv and do nothing They work. dns.getDefaultResultOrder() is ipv4first, --inspect opens the inspector, and --inspect-wait / --inspect-brk wait for a client. With --disallow-code-generation-from-strings=strict baked in too, --inspect is the same error as in bun, exit 1 #40703
bun test --parallel when a worker can't write its snapshots (two values for one toMatchInlineSnapshot() call, a read-only test file, a full disk) exit 0. With a full disk nothing is printed and the .snap file is empty exit 1, like a serial run. For a .snap file, also error: Failed to write snapshot file #39061
bun discord (and its --help). BUN_CONFIG_VERBOSE_FETCH=1. bun install --verbose. The bun init menu with NO_COLOR=1 A bare > is dropped: - https://bun.com/discord, HTTP/1.1 GET ..., 2 packages - 2 packages, no > marker in the menu -> https://bun.com/discord, > HTTP/1.1 GET ..., 2 packages -> 2 packages, > Blank #40713
bun --help, bun run --help, bun build --help, bun patch --help --loader lists 10 loaders, --no-module-preload has a hole in its text, --asset says "preserving its relative path", and the third bun patch example has no --commit --loader lists all 17, --no-module-preload has its words back, --asset says where the file is mounted, and the example has --commit #38270, #42967, #44065, #45417
A link or copy of Bun called NODE, node.EXE, or (on POSIX) node.exe Runs as bun. With no arguments it prints Bun's help, exit 0 Runs as node. With no arguments it prints error: Missing script to execute, exit 1 #35653, #36827
bun completions Prints the old bash, fish and zsh scripts All three scripts have changed #36629
bash: bun build <TAB>, bun dev <TAB>, bun init <TAB>, bun info <TAB>, bun ci <TAB> Offers the subcommand list (install add run ...) as the second word Offers the global flags and files #36629
bash: bun --watch run d<TAB> Offers the subcommands dev discord dedupe Offers the package.json scripts that start with d #36629
fish: bun run <TAB> 6 entries in our test project 15: the same 6, then every file and directory #36629
fish: bun run src/<TAB> Loosely matched script names (build, dev, test:unit) The files in src/ #36629
fish: bun --cwd <TAB>, bun --env-file <TAB>, bun --preload <TAB> Everything (37 entries) Files only (11) #36629
Windows: bunx.exe --bun <tool> with bun.exe next to it process.execPath, process.argv[0] and process.argv0 point at bunx.exe, and process.execArgv is ["--bun", "--no-install"] bun.exe, [], and child_process.fork() starts bun #40300
Windows: bun run --filter x y > NUL The live view Plain records #41983
Windows, a legacy console without VT support The progress bar writes raw escape codes It uses the console API #41983
macOS, not run: bun <(echo ...), if it works there on 1.4.3 (reports disagree) import.meta.path and Bun.main are /dev/fd/N <cwd>/[stdin], relative imports resolve from the cwd, and process._eval is set #35463

When a parent's bunfig.toml is read (#29310)

  • It applies to bun <file>, bun run, bun -e / -p / -, bun repl, Bun running as node, bun test and bun build. It doesn't apply with --config, or when the cwd has a bunfig.toml.
  • Bun picks the nearest bunfig.toml in a parent directory, and uses it only if it's inside the project. The project root is the directory of the nearest package.json at or above the cwd. If the file is above that, the root is the first package.json further up that has workspaces, and only if those workspaces list the package's directory (globs, ! patterns and the { packages: [] } form all work). Any package.json marks a project root, even one that only has { "type": "module" }.
  • With no package.json at or above the cwd, nothing is read.
  • One file is read. Nothing is merged.
  • Bun doesn't search parent directories when the cwd is inside node_modules, or in a compiled executable.
  • A parent's file is skipped unless the file and the directory it's in both have the same owner as the cwd. So a file that another user put in a shared parent directory (/tmp, the root of a data drive) is never loaded, and neither is a hard link there to one of your own files. On Unix that's the uid from lstat. On Windows it's the owner SID, and a parent's file that is a symlink is skipped too. A skipped file is silent, and the search continues upward. Group-writable and world-writable parents are fine as long as the owners match.
  • A limit of that rule: if the project directory belongs to a different user than its contents (a Docker image with WORKDIR /app created by root and COPY --chown=1000 . .), the root's file is skipped from a member directory, which is what 1.4.3 does.
  • Cost: when the cwd has no bunfig.toml, startup does one extra lstat per parent directory, up to the filesystem root. The workspace root isn't known until the walk finds it, so the walk can't stop earlier.
  • ./ and ../ entries in preload and [test] preload resolve from the parent file's directory. Entries in ./bunfig.toml and in a --config file are still relative to the cwd. [test] root in a parent's file isn't applied, so bun test in a member directory still scans that directory. Every other path key is still relative to the cwd.
  • Keys that can now apply from a parent's file (we didn't measure each one). Running code: preload, define, loader, jsx*, macros, smol, logLevel, env, telemetry, [run], [console], [serve], [serve.static], [debug] editor, and the [install] keys that auto-install uses. bun test: those plus all of [test]. bun build: define, loader, jsx*, macros, external, [bundle], logLevel, [serve.static].
  • Unchanged: bun install, add, remove, update, outdated, audit, publish, patch, link, bunx, bun create, init, lint, fmt, check, exec, upgrade. (bun install and bun pm already read the root's [install] from a member.)
  • Cost: one more access() when the cwd has a bunfig.toml. Otherwise one failing lstat() per parent directory up to /. A package.json is only looked at, and at most one is parsed, after a candidate file is found.

How did you verify your code works?

What ran, all on Linux x64:

  • Each behavior change has a test, almost always in the existing test file for that code. Tests for new behavior fail on main (c1df64b) and pass on this branch. Tests that pin behavior we didn't want to change pass on both.
  • 2,588 command lines, collected while reviewing the original PRs, ran on three release builds: 1.4.3, main at the merge base, and this branch (CI's binaries). 1,910 give the same result on all three, and 340 differ between main and this branch. 27 of those exited 0 on 1.4.3 and main and not here. Each is a row in the table above, except [test] root in a parent's bunfig.toml, which was changed back afterwards. We read every difference in the command lines that belong to PRs that aren't part of this one (87), and each is a side effect listed above or chance (test order, ports, pids, timings, the commit hash in a cache path).
  • For the 17 PRs applied as they were, 204 help screens (51 commands, --help and -h, colors on and off) were diffed against main. Only the lines listed above differ.
  • A fresh bun init is byte for byte what main writes, over 16 command lines (-y, -m, the three --react forms, a folder argument, an empty or {} package.json, a second run, --help): exit code, stdout, stderr and every file.
  • .env: the old and the new parser, compiled side by side in a small harness, parsed 350,919 distinct random files. 63,395 differ, and every one of those has a key that refers to itself, or to a later key in the same file whose text contains $. As a control, one changed comparison makes the same check report 21,218 unexplained differences.
  • Completions: 210 command lines per shell went through the old and the new scripts, for bash with and without extglob and for fish, plus an interactive bash on a pty.
  • The --filter live view, the --watch screen clear, console.clear() and FORCE_COLOR in scripts were checked on a real pty (27 command lines), on 1.4.3 and on this branch.

Existing tests that had to change:

  • bun-run-bunfig.test.ts: "NOT autoload local bunfig.toml (sub cwd)" pinned the old rule. It now expects the project's file to load.
  • run-autoinstall.test.ts: three tests put a broken bunfig.toml in the project root and ran from app/src. Bun now reads that file at startup, so they run from a directory outside the project.
  • filter-workspace.test.ts, watch.test.ts: tests that reached the live view or the screen clear with FORCE_COLOR=1 and a pipe now use Bun.spawn({ terminal }).
  • bun-install.test.ts: two expected error texts lost the raw <green> markup.
  • isolated-install.test.ts: two tests ignored SIGCHLD to make a lifecycle script impossible to wait for. Bun can wait for it now, so one test expects the package to stay installed, and the workspace variant is gone.
  • bun-build-api.test.ts: one test about the "" loader key has a new title and the same body.

Explanation

The PR implements the coding requirements for all active direct issues. [#31877] restricts --if-present lookup to Bun-managed binary paths and adds tests. [#7102] handles process-substitution, pipe, and FIFO entry points. [#36755, #43689] preserve symlink paths for runtime and build resolution, with ESM/CJS and package-resolution tests. [#10333, #20347, #36826, #44062] fix valued global flags, --bun upgrade, case-insensitive bunx names, and --asset help and documentation. [#4112, #21670, #10346, #6037, #20216] cover ancestor bunfig.toml, Linux workspace names, filtered-run colors, and shell file completion. [#12216, #3440, #44643] cover CLI-over-config precedence, filePatterns, and test.isolate. [#37337, #45491, #40298, #42962] cover bounded fd guidance, synchronized macro environment loading, Windows bunx --bun workers, and Windows filtered-run interruption. The PR adds automated tests for these behaviors. The author did not run Windows and macOS validation locally, but the platform-specific source changes and tests are present.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The PR contains substantial behavior changes that do not implement the listed direct issues. Examples include dotenv expansion and production-mode selection ([#36698, #36030, #45101]), process-wide environment-file disabling ([#45445]), bun init manifest and template behavior ([#41807, #41741, #44992, #45836]), spawn and SIGCHLD handling ([#38022]), unhandled-rejection exit codes ([#38116]), watcher behavior ([#38658]), compiled-executable debugger flags ([#40703]), IPC environment handling ([#41739]), coverage and snapshot failures ([#32849, #39061]), and repeated reporter handling ([#41881]). These changes are implementations and tests, not only support for the directly linked issues.

Resolution

Split unrelated behavior changes into separate pull requests, or link each additional active issue as a direct target and narrow this pull request to the linked implementation, tests, and documentation.

Beyond the inline findings, two behavior changes were checked and ruled out as intended: bun run --shell=bun no longer forwarding NODE_CHANNEL_FD to the script's children (the Bun-shell path returns before the re-add at run_command.rs:441 that only the system-shell path does, and ipc-channel-scrub.test.ts asserts it), and bun run --if-present no longer launching a PATH binary outside node_modules/.bin (if-present.test.ts asserts the new behavior). Both differ from 1.4.3 and the --shell=bun one differs from the system-shell path, so they deserve a human's eye on whether that split is wanted.

Extended reasoning...

The change is a ~5,300-line consolidation of 67 CLI PRs across bunfig loading, bun run, env loading, --filter/workspaces, bun test options and completions, and it adds a parent-directory bunfig.toml search gated on file-ownership checks (unix uid, Windows GetNamedSecurityInfoW/EqualSid), which is a new trust boundary. Seven verified findings are posted inline, including the hard-link ownership bypass on the new config search, so approval is not appropriate. The two items in the body were traced in run_command.rs and env_loader.rs against the base revision and are covered by new tests, so they are design choices rather than defects.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

so it compares the parent file’s owner with the working directory’s owner, and
clarify that Windows also skips symbolic links.
- Line 41: Update the relative-path statement near the bunfig documentation to
limit config-directory resolution to `preload` paths and `[install]` paths;
clarify that with `--config`, preload paths use the working directory, and that
other relative paths use the working directory unless a key specifies otherwise.

Review comments at @src/bun_core/util.rs:
- Around line 4580-4581: When restoring SIGCHLD to SIG_DFL, update the sigaction
flags to clear SA_NOCLDWAIT as well as changing sa_sigaction, so child exit
statuses remain available to later waits.

Review comments at @src/resolver/resolver.rs:
- Line 1647: Update the `preserve_symlinks` handling in the resolver so entry
points inside symlinked directories resolve their parent-directory links even
when `--preserve-symlinks` is set, without changing symlink behavior for imports
or requiring `--preserve-symlinks-main`.

Review comments at @src/runtime/api/BunObject.rs:

corresponding VM path-selection logic to distinguish the CLI flag from
`NODE_PRESERVE_SYMLINKS_MAIN`; ensure the environment variable does not skip

setting it when name is non-empty.

Review comments at @src/runtime/cli/mod.rs:
- Around line 768-775: Update the `word_after_flags()` branch in the CLI
argument dispatch to set `after_value` based on whether the returned token `it`
is the same token as `first_arg_name`, rather than classifying `first_arg_name`
as a command. Preserve the existing command selection logic so flag values such
as `test` are skipped while `bun -p install` continues through the eval path.

Review comments at @test/bundler/transpiler/macro-test.test.ts:

containing this callback, leaving the test to use Bun’s default timeout
behavior.

Review comments at @test/cli/init/init.test.ts:
- Line 93: Remove the explicit 30_000 timeout argument from the test.each call
containing the init test, leaving the test callback and its assertions
unchanged.

Review comments at @test/cli/run/filter-workspace.test.ts:
- Around line 1515-1517: Remove the explicit 30000 per-test timeout from the
test callback in the workspace filter test and rely on Bun’s default timeout. If
needed, shorten the helper’s internal deadlines to fit within that default.

Review comments at @test/cli/run/run-crash-handler.test.ts:

debug-binary symbolization comment, leaving the test to use Bun’s default
timeout.

Review comments at @test/cli/test/parallel.test.ts:
- Line 999: Update the two independent process tests for “--parallel exits 1
when a worker cannot update an inline snapshot” and the test beginning at the
other reported location to use test.concurrent, provided neither shares state
with the other; preserve their existing assertions and setup.

Review comments at @test/cli/watch/watch.test.ts:
- Line 423: Remove the explicit 30-second timeout from the test declaration
ending at `}, 30000);` and rely on Bun’s built-in test timeout.

Review comments at @test/js/bun/spawn/ipc-channel-scrub.test.ts:

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/bunfig/bunfig.rs — pre-existing (nit): bun run --silent <script> still echoes $ <script> when bunfig.toml has [run] silent = false, while the PR makes the flag win for the sibling [run] shell and [run] bun keys. At src/bunfig/bunfig.rs:916 silent is assigned unconditionally, and for bun run <script> the file is read lazily in run_command.rs:2469 after Arguments.rs:1586 set the flag. Fix: record --silent in CliOverrides and skip the key when it is set, as bunfig.rs:934 and bunfig.rs:950 do for shell and bun, so every [run] key defers to its flag on both the early and the lazy load path.

    Why this was flagged

    A project has bunfig.toml with [run]\nsilent = false (the test at test/cli/install/bun-run-bunfig.test.ts:62-69 writes exactly this form) and the user runs bun run --silent start. Arguments.rs:940 and Arguments.rs:1586-1588 set ctx.debug.silent = true. bun run <script> without --filter does not load bunfig in Arguments::parse (ALWAYS_LOADS_CONFIG is false for RunCommand), so the file is read in exec_with_cfg at src/runtime/cli/run_command.rs:2466-2475, after the flag was applied. src/bunfig/bunfig.rs:914-916 then stores false into ctx.debug.silent, and run_command.rs:2598 reads that value, so Output::command at run_command.rs:367-369 prints $ echo started to stderr. The comment at Arguments.rs:938-939 says the flag is set again so that it overrides run.silent, which only holds for the early-load paths (--filter, --parallel, --workspaces). The base branch behaves the same; this PR adds CliOverrides (src/options_types/context.rs:50-85) and guards [run] shell at bunfig.rs:934 and [run] bun at bunfig.rs:950 but leaves [run] silent ungated.

    Verification: A project bunfig.toml contains [run] silent = false and the user runs bun run --silent <script>. src/bunfig/bunfig.rs:914-916 assigns self.ctx.debug.silent = value; unconditionally. The file is read lazily at src/runtime/cli/run_command.rs:2466-2475, after Arguments.rs:1586-1588 set ctx.debug.silent = true. The base commit has the identical unconditional assignment (base bunfig.rs:833).

The wake from #45756 in this branch (b941e92) is the first revision of that PR. With the wake alone, one Ctrl-C under a parent that forwards the signal kills both receivers. bun run <script> is such a parent: the terminal signals the foreground process group, and bun run signals its child again.

One 0x03 on a controlling pty, release builds (--lto=off, Linux x64), death by SIGINT:

receiver parent 1.4.3-canary wake only #45756 now
bun test --parallel, two workers in a 60 s test bun run 0 of 3 9 of 50, test-spawned processes left in 3 0 of 50
node forwarder 0 of 12 16 of 50, left in 10 0 of 50
bun repl in an await bun run 0 of 3 42 of 50, terminal left raw 0 of 50
node forwarder 0 of 12 39 of 50 0 of 50

The rates of the "wake only" column move with the machine. A second set two days later, in a fresh container, on the same code merged with main: bun repl 1 of 60 under bun run and 30 of 30 under the node forwarder, bun test --parallel 6 of 30 (test-spawned processes left in 6) and 1 of 30. #45756 on that day: 0 of 50 in all four.

"wake only" is #45756 at e8c31f7. I did not build this branch. At 04b8877 it has the same two statements: abort_handler::uninstall() is the first statement of abort_all (Coordinator.rs), and disable_signals_during_wait sets SIG_DFL after every wait (repl.rs). docs/test/parallel.mdx says that on SIGINT or SIGTERM the coordinator stops what the tests spawned and exits with 130 or 143.

The fix is in #45756 now, as five commits on top of the wake:

  • bun test --parallel: signal the worker groups before the abort report is written
  • bun test --parallel: keep the signal handler until the exit
  • repl: do not change the mode of a terminal the REPL does not own
  • repl: keep the SIGINT handler at a raw prompt
  • repl: one wait function, and SIGINT gets back the action it had at the start

The second and the fourth each set a rule that needs a yes. The body of #45756 has both under "Two rules that need a maintainer's yes". The commits apply to this branch with one conflict, a doc comment in repl.rs. parallel-signal.test.ts has to come back without the two latency cases that this branch removed.

bun upgrade starts on lines that 1.4.3 refuses. The change comes with the part ported from #39379 and #41511.

Measured at 04b8877, debug build, Linux x64. Each line ran a copy of the executable in a network namespace with no route out. A proxy on loopback logged each request and answered 502. "starts" means that the proxy logged CONNECT github.com:443. With a network this is a normal bun upgrade: it replaces the executable, unless a stable build is already the latest version.

Line 1.4.3 This branch
bun --version upgrade, bun --revision upgrade, and both after --bun This command updates Bun itself, and does not take package names, exit 1 starts, 4 of 4
bun -p1+1 upgrade, bun -p=1+1 upgrade, bun -ip1+1 upgrade, bun -p upgrade, bun -pe upgrade the same error starts, 5 of 5
bun --cwd upgrade dev, bun --filter upgrade dev, bun --env-file upgrade dev, bun --title upgrade dev, bun --conditions upgrade dev, bun --elide-lines upgrade dev, bun --cwd upgrade run dev the same error starts, 7 of 7
bun -- --version upgrade --help the same error prints Downloading..., then the connection fails
bun --bun upgrade, bun --smol upgrade the same error (#20347) starts, as intended
bun --cwd=upgrade dev, bun --filter=upgrade dev runs the dev script runs the dev script

The third row is a folder or a workspace package with the name upgrade. bun --filter <pattern> <script> is the line that docs/pm/filter.mdx documents.

Cause, in three parts:

  • UpgradeCommand::exec (src/runtime/cli/upgrade_command.rs:510) checks only after_command(argv, b"upgrade"). Nothing reads the flags in front of the word, so --version and --revision pass.
  • after_command (src/runtime/cli/mod.rs:1431) ends in unwrap_or_default(). When place_of_command returns None, the result is an empty slice, and the check reads that as "no arguments". place_of_command returns None when upgrade is the value of a flag, and when an eval flag stands before it.
  • which() still picks UpgradeCommand for these lines. Its first loop steps over every flag, and a word that spells a command then wins over the word after the value of a flag (src/runtime/cli/mod.rs:769-775).

On 1.4.3 the check starts at argv[2]. With anything in front of it, the word upgrade itself fails the check. That is the bug of #20347, and it was also the only guard that these lines had.

A possible fix, not built: in exec, refuse when place_of_command(b"upgrade") is None, and when --version, -v or --revision is in arguments_before(b"upgrade"). bun --bun upgrade, bun --smol upgrade and BUN_OPTIONS=--smol bun upgrade still upgrade.

For comparison, #41511 with main merged in: rows 1, 2 and 4 start an upgrade there too. In row 3 it runs the dev script for 6 of 7 lines, and --elide-lines upgrade is an invalid number.

Thanks for this one. We've been waiting on the "" loader key since #36904.

On this PR's build, Bun.build({ check: true, loader: { "": "ts" }, tsconfig }) type-checks suffixless scripts in place: relative imports, package.json imports, tsconfig paths, and a <T>x cast that reads as TS, not TSX. It does the same inside a --compiled binary, which lets us give a compiled CLI a built-in checker for its users' scripts. On 1.4.3 the same call silently skips those files.
