Problem

  • bun --check --loader :ts main.ts fails in a project that has a file the type checker cannot read: error TS6054: File '.../index.html' has an unsupported extension.
  • A JS-like --loader entry becomes an extra extension for tsconfig include (script_kinds_by_extension, src/runtime/cli/check_command.rs:585). include compares an extension as a suffix (src/sema/config.rs:283, :1705), and every name ends with "".

Fix

  • extra_supported_extensions (src/sema/resolve.rs) leaves "" out. Both include matchers read it.
  • A file with no extension is in the program when it is an entry point or imported, and Host::script_kind still gives it its language.
  • Correct because LICENSE has no extension too: include must not add such files.
  • Verified: test/cli/check/entry-points.test.ts (new entry, 6 project kinds, 3 commands). On main 10 of its 12 debug-build cases fail. The file passes (173 tests).

Background

  • --loader :ts maps files with no extension to TypeScript. CLI: fixes for bun run, flags, bunfig.toml, .env, --filter, bun init and completions #46007 adds the same key to bunfig.toml and Bun.build.
  • A tsconfig with no include uses **/*, which matches only files with a supported extension. --check adds the --loader extensions to that set.
  • Considered: match "" on every name with no extension (the first commit). LICENSE is then a root file: TS6059 under rootDir.

Downsides

  • A composite project whose own file imports a file with no extension gets TS6307 (file not listed) until files names it. On main that passes only when the directory has no other unknown file.
  • None found without the "" key: the filter removes only that entry. Checked entry-points.test.ts and 17 loader and include tests of check.test.ts.
Notes

Repro on main (2d6d445), in a directory with tsconfig.json ({"compilerOptions":{"strict":true,"noEmit":true}}), typed.ts (export const n: number = 1;) and index.html:

$ bun --check --loader :ts typed.ts
error TS6054: File '/tmp/chk/index.html' has an unsupported extension. The only supported extensions are '.ts', '.tsx', '.d.ts', '.cts', '.d.cts', '.mts', '.d.mts'.
The file is in the program because:
Matched by default include pattern '**/*'
note: Stopped before type checking 1 file. Fix the errors above to see the rest.
Found 1 error, checked 0 files
$ bun --check typed.ts        # exit 0

With this PR both commands exit 0. bun build --check and bun build --no-bundle --check fail and pass the same way. bun --check --loader :ts main.ts still reports a TS2322 in an imported file with no extension, and bun build --check --loader :ts cli still reports one in an entry point with no extension.

History of this PR:

  • The first commit matched "" on every name with no extension. A review showed what that keeps: with "rootDir": "src", a LICENSE at the project root gave error TS6059: File '/tmp/chk5/LICENSE' is not under 'rootDir', and an include that names a node_modules directory gave a root file with no language. Both exit 0 with the second commit.
  • The second commit is the shape in the Fix section. Its cost is the composite case in Downsides: main.ts(1,19): error TS6307: File '.../app/imported' is not listed within the file list of project '.../app/tsconfig.json'. With "files": ["imported"], "include": ["**/*"] in that tsconfig the run exits 0.
  • The new test entry uses an entry point with no extension that imports another one. Files that only a named entry point reaches are not the project's own, so no project kind reports TS6307 for them.

Other facts:

Not fixed here, found during the same work:

  • With --loader :tsx, an HTML <img src> or CSS url() that points at a file with no extension is parsed as code (src/bundler/bundle_v2.rs, the ImportKind::Url guard skips JS-like loaders).
  • bun build --compile ./cli with no --outfile writes the executable over ./cli.
  • The Loader type in bun.d.ts lacks "dataurl", "base64", "json5", "md" and "sqlite", which Bun.build({ loader }) accepts, and has "napi", which it rejects.

…o extension

`--loader :ts` adds `""` to the extensions that a tsconfig `include` pattern
matches. `include` compared it as a suffix, and every name ends with `""`, so
each file in the directory joined the program: `TS6054` on `index.html`.

`supported_extension_is` reads `""` the way `Host::script_kind` does: a name
with no extension. A file with no extension still matches `include`.

Walkthrough

The resolver now excludes empty host-provided extensions from suffix matching. A CLI test covers an extensionless imported file with an empty TypeScript loader and verifies that notes.txt is excluded.

Changes

Loader extension filtering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Filter empty extensions and validate entry points
src/sema/resolve.rs, test/cli/check/entry-points.test.ts
extra_supported_extensions excludes empty extensions while preserving non-empty extensions. The CLI test checks an extensionless imported file, excludes notes.txt, and omits Bun.build because it drops the empty loader key.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 46dfe

With an empty loader extension (--loader :ts), tsconfig include patterns no longer pick up extensionless files, so their type errors can go unreported. This contradicts the PR's stated goal and should be fixed before merge: keep the empty extension and match it only for files without an extension, then update the test to expect isIncluded: true.

Status: ready for review. CI is running.

Reproduced on main (2d6d445) in a directory with tsconfig.json ({"compilerOptions":{"strict":true,"noEmit":true}}), typed.ts (export const n: number = 1;) and index.html:

bun --check typed.ts # exit 0
bun --check --loader :ts typed.ts # error TS6054: File '.../index.html' has an unsupported extension, exit 1
bun build --check --loader :ts ./typed.ts --outdir out # the same error, exit 1

With this PR the three commands exit 0. The new entry in test/cli/check/entry-points.test.ts fails on main in 10 of the 12 cases that a debug build runs, and passes here.

To run that file with a debug build, pass a test timeout as CI does: bun bd test test/cli/check/entry-points.test.ts --timeout=270000. With the default 5 s, cases that this PR does not touch time out.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked a few adjacent concerns and ruled them out: dotfiles like .env get an empty bun_paths::extension too, but the include glob matcher (is_hidden in match_wildcard and the ** traversal in GlobPattern::match_parts) rejects hidden names before the extension filter runs, so they are not newly matched; Host::script_kind and has_types_with both compare bun_paths::extension(path) by equality, so the file list and per-file language agree for the "" key; and the two updated matchers are the only readers of extra_supported_extensions. The new test entry does cover the notes.txt negative case indirectly, since an included notes.txt would surface as TS6054 and break the codes: [] / exit 0 expectation.

Extended reasoning...

The change is 12 source lines in src/sema/config.rs and src/sema/resolve.rs that stop the empty --loader extension from matching every file in tsconfig include enumeration, plus one new entry in test/cli/check/entry-points.test.ts; no security-sensitive surface is touched. Two confirmed inline findings about remaining extension-less-file cases (rootDir, node_modules) already signal that a human should look, so this body only records what else was examined.

Matching `""` on every file with no extension made `LICENSE` and `Makefile`
root files of the program: `TS6059` under `rootDir`, and each one read and
parsed. `extra_supported_extensions` now leaves `""` out. A file with no
extension is in the program when it is named or imported, and
`Host::script_kind` still gives it its language.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve include matching for extensionless files.

When --loader :ts supplies an empty extension, this filter removes it from the list passed to match_files. An extensionless file matched by a tsconfig include pattern is then omitted unless another path adds it. Its type errors can go unchecked. Match the empty extension only when the filename has no extension, rather than removing it. The new test’s isIncluded: false expectation also needs to change. The PR objective explicitly requires preserving extensionless-file matching.

Beyond the inline finding, I checked that extra_supported_extensions has only the two include callers in src/sema/config.rs (lines 157 and 1182), so no sibling matcher misses the new filter, and that Host::script_kind (src/sema/driver/host.rs:1467-1469) compares the whole extension, so an extensionless entry point or import still gets its --loader kind — the new test is live for that reason.
One note: the PR description still describes supported_extension_is from the first commit; the second commit replaced it with the approach the description lists under "Considered", so the description no longer matches the diff.
Nit: the comment at test/cli/check/entry-points.test.ts:187 says Bun.build drops the "" key, but src/runtime/api/JSBundler.rs:1256-1258 rejects it with an invalid-arguments error.

Extended reasoning...

The change adds a one-line filter in src/sema/resolve.rs that keeps the empty --loader extension out of the extension list used for tsconfig include matching, plus one new matrix entry in test/cli/check/entry-points.test.ts; no security-sensitive surface. The second commit reversed the first commit's approach in response to the prior review, and the remaining inline finding is the trade-off the PR description itself names, so a human should weigh it; the PR description is also stale relative to the diff.

🔴 Users of --loader :ts in a composite project whose included .ts file imports a file with no extension now get TS6307 where the base branch passes. Dropping "" at src/sema/resolve.rs:2215 means the imported extensionless file is no longer a root, and output_path_errors (src/sema/program.rs:4346) reports 6307 for every own non-root module. The PR description names this exact case as the reason not to take this approach, and the new test entry avoids it by making the extensionless file the entry point. Fix: a file whose extension the "" loader maps must still count as a project root (or be exempt from 6307) when it is imported from an included root, while notes.txt stays out; add a matrix variant where main.ts imports ./imported under the composite kind.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: bun --check --loader :ts main.ts in a project like the test's "under a solution" kind (composite: true, default include) where main.ts imports ./util, a file with no extension. main.ts matches **/*, so own_roots stays None (src/sema/driver/lib.rs:2356-2362), making is_own true for every module (src/sema/program.rs:4330-4335). After this change extra_supported_extensions (src/sema/resolve.rs:2215) no longer yields "", so match_files (src/sema/config.rs:1182) does not list util as a root. explain(6307, ...) at src/sema/program.rs:4346 fires with !is_root && is_own(module), exiting 1. On the base branch util matched include through the empty suffix and was a root, so this project exits 0. The new test entry at test/cli/check/entry-points.test.ts:189 uses cli (extensionless, not matched by include) as the entry point, so the variant where an included .ts root imports the extensionless file is not covered. The PR description itself notes that keeping "" out of include yields TS6307 in a composite project, and the final commit does exactly that without addressing it.

Verification: Head commit 46dfeed ships the approach the PR description rejects. src/sema/resolve.rs:2215 removes "" from extra_supported_extensions, so util is no longer listed as a root. main.ts is already in project.files, so own_roots stays None and is_own is true for every module; program.rs:4345-4348 reports 6307 for util, where base passes. The new test entry uses cli as entry point, so it does not exercise the case.
