LGTM — a clean fix for a real data-loss footgun, aligning bun init with how bun add / bun pm pkg already treat an unparseable manifest.
What was reviewed:
- The three former fallback-to-
Nonepaths now print viaOutput::err/err_genericandGlobal::exit(1); the surrounding'read_package_jsonlabel and the Windowsget_pos/seek_tobracket are intact. - The empty-file path is unchanged (still gated on
list.is_empty()/st_size == 0before this block), so scaffolding an emptypackage.jsonstill works as the PR description states. - Tests follow the file's existing conventions (
tempDir,initEnv,cwd: temp, concurrent pipe drain), assert stderr/stdout before exit code, and verify both that the original bytes survive and that no scaffold files land.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
This PR changes bun init in src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs so that when an existing package.json fails to read, fails to parse, or has a non-object root, the command prints a proper error and exits 1 instead of silently treating the file as absent and overwriting it with the blank scaffold. The 'process_package_json labeled block is flattened into straight-line code with Output::err / Output::err_generic + Global::exit(1) on each of the three failure paths; the parser's Log is printed to stderr when it has recorded errors, giving the user a code frame. Two test.each cases in test/cli/init/init.test.ts cover a syntax error and a non-object root, asserting stderr contains the specific message, stdout is empty, the file is byte-identical, the directory contains only package.json, and the exit code is 1.
Security risks
None. This is a CLI UX/correctness change to a local scaffolding command. No network, no auth, no untrusted-input parsing beyond what already existed. If anything it reduces risk by preventing accidental destruction of the user's manifest.
Level of scrutiny
Low-to-moderate. The diff is small (~40 lines of Rust, most of which is dedent from removing a labeled block) and the intent is unambiguous — it directly implements the REVIEW.md rule "never swallow a failure or signal success on one; operations the user explicitly requested fail the whole command on any failure". I checked that the outer 'read_package_json label is still referenced by the earlier stat/size guards (it is), that the Windows-only prev_file_pos save/restore around pread_all remains balanced, and that the empty-file short-circuit (st_size == 0 → break 'read_package_json, then list.is_empty()) still bypasses this block so an empty manifest is still scaffolded as before.
Other factors
The tests are well-constructed per repo conventions: tempDir with using, bunExe()/initEnv, Promise.all draining stdout/stderr/exited concurrently, output assertions before exit-code assertion, test.each for the two variants, and they live alongside existing bun init tests rather than in a new file. They match the surrounding file's idioms (cwd: temp, path.join(temp, ...), readdirSync already imported). No CODEOWNERS entries cover these paths. The added Rust comment is a one-liner explaining a non-obvious invariant (why "unparseable" must not collapse to "absent"), which is the kind of comment the style guide asks for. Exit reason was dry_streak and there are no outstanding third-party reviews on the timeline.

`bun init` treated a package.json that failed to parse, or whose root was not an object, the same as a missing one. It then created the file again with O_TRUNC and wrote the blank scaffold over it, exit code 0, with no mention of the parse error. Print the parser error and exit 1 instead, like `bun add`, `bun install` and `bun pm pkg` do. A read error on an existing package.json exits 1 too. The file is left untouched.

Only ENOENT from the probe means that there is no package.json. Every other outcome prints the absolute path and the cause and exits 1 before the template picker: another open error, a stat or read error, a file that is not a regular file, a parse error, a root that is not an object. The write step has no truncating open. An absent file is created with O_EXCL. If that fails with EEXIST, or the file was empty at the probe, the step writes only into a regular file that is still empty. A React template chosen by a flag returns before the probe. Its writer never used the result and skips an existing package.json.

src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs— pre-existing: a user who picks the React template (interactively, or via --react) in a directory holding an empty package.json gets a project with no scripts or dependencies and exit 0. The probe classifies a zero-byte file as ExistingPackageJson::Empty, but the React branch at src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:618-622 returns through write_files_and_run_bun_dev, whose Assets::create_new of package.json fails with EEXIST and prints "already exists, skipping", so the file stays empty andbun installruns on it. Fix: treat Empty the same as Absent for the React templates too, writing the template package.json through the open handle (or unlinking the empty file before the writer runs), while still skipping a Loaded manifest. Why this was flagged
Trigger:
touch package.json, thenbun initon a TTY and choose React, orbun init --react. The probe at src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:445-447 returns ExistingPackageJson::Empty(pkg) for st_size == 0, and the interactive picker is shown because the state is not Loaded (src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:573). Picking React sets template and the match at src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:618-622 calls write_files_and_run_bun_dev and returns; the --react flag takes the same function via the early return at src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:399-402. In write_files_and_run_bun_dev (src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:1778-1790) Assets::create_new on package.json hits EEXIST for the empty file and prints " ○ package.json (already exists, skipping)", so the template's scripts and react dependencies are never written. The base branch behaves the same, so this is pre-existing, but the new Empty variant documents the file as one "filled in through this handle" (src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:1151) and the React path does not honour that.Verification: pre-existing. Triggering condition: a zero-byte package.json exists and the user selects a React template (interactively, or via
--react*).write_files_and_run_bun_dev(src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:1759-1800) callsAssets::create_newforpackage.json. An existing empty file yields EEXIST, which is caught and printed as" ○ package.json (already exists, skipping)"(lines 1785-1790). The file stays 0 bytes.
…outs Move the package.json state types and their helpers into the existing Helpers section. Keep each new comment to one line. Remove the explicit timeouts from the four new tests.
…sal on the pty The probe parses under the relative name again. Only a parse error joins the absolute path, in the reporter, and parses once more so that the code frame names the file. A debug build counted one more allocation per run with a valid package.json before this change. The pty can deliver the last lines of the child after its exit is reported. The three pty tests read the output at exit and failed about 1 run in 90 under load. They now wait for the last line of the refusal. The docs sentence said that bun init exits with an error for every package.json that it cannot load. With --react it skips the file.
…he pty until EOF in tests An editor that saves by rename leaves bun init with a handle to the old, unlinked file. That file is still an empty regular file, so the write step filled it in, printed ` + package.json` and exited 0, and the saved file got no scaffold. A link count of 0 now counts as changed. The pty tests create the terminal in the spawn. Bun then delivers all of the child's output before `exited` resolves, so the tests wait for no marker, and a failure shows the output.
Problem
bun initreplaces apackage.jsonthat it cannot load with the blank scaffold and exits 0: a parse error, a non-object root, an open error (mode 0200), or a file saved while the TTY template picker is open.InitCommand::exec(src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs): every probe failure becameNone, the state for "no package.json", and the write step ranFile::create(cwd, "package.json", truncate).Fix
