…the CSS module hash and which bstr::BStr's Display writes U+FFFD for each byte that is not UTF-8. Four places formatted a file name or a script's output through it into a byte buffer, so the bytes changed: - run --filter and --workspaces relay a script's line with extend_from_slice. - build --outfile and the .exe suffix are concatenated. The map-name fallback is removed: every source map has its own dest_path. - bun_base64::wyhash_url_safe and css_modules::hash take byte parts instead of fmt::Arguments and hash them. - The shell's which writes the path it found through the byte entries.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the deleted .map/.exe.map basename fallback in src/runtime/cli/build_command.rs — every OutputKind::Sourcemap constructor (generateChunksInParallel.rs, writeOutputFilesToDisk.rs) sets output_path to <chunk>.map, so the fallback branch was unreachable and its removal is not a behavior change. The CSS module hash input in src/css/css_modules.rs (hash, "_", name, "_", key as byte parts) produces the same bytes as the old "{}_{}_{}" format for valid UTF-8, so existing generated class names stay stable.
Extended reasoning...
The change replaces format!/write! with bstr::BStr by direct byte concatenation in four sinks (run --filter relay, build --outfile/.exe naming, CSS module hashing via a new &[&[u8]] signature for wyhash_url_safe, and shell which output), plus tests. It touches no auth, crypto, or permission surface. Four inline findings were posted (sibling sites in which.rs and LinkerContext.rs left on the lossy path, an inconsistent pkg: prefix on the final chunk, and a sleep-dependent test), so human review is already signaled; this note only records the two candidate concerns ruled out from the code.
Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

🟣
src/runtime/shell/builtin/which.rs— Shell users get awhichwhose two output lines disagree in encoding: a found path is now written byte-exact, but thenot foundline for the same argument still rewrites non-UTF-8 bytes to U+FFFD. which.rs:63 and which.rs:114 keepformat_args!("{} not found\n", bstr::BStr::new(&arg))while which.rs:55 and which.rs:137 enqueue the rawline. Sowhich a\xFF b\xFFunderbun execprints one name exactly and the other mangled, on stdout, in one command. On the base both lines were mangled consistently. Fix: build the not-found line by appendingargbytes (sync and async sites, both viastrings::concat), matching the found line. Why this was flagged
Trigger:
bun exec 'which <name>'or aBun.$script where the argument holds bytes that are not UTF-8 and the tool is absent on PATH, with multiple arguments where some resolve. The found branch now writesresolve_line's raw bytes (which.rs:55, :137, :139), but the not-found branch still formats throughbstr::BStr::new(&arg)(which.rs:63, :114, :122), which substitutes U+FFFD for each invalid byte. Users get a stdout stream mixing exact and lossy names for the same invocation; a script that echoes the argument back from the not-found line gets a name that no longer matches what it passed. On the base branch both lines were lossy, so a consumer at least saw one consistent encoding. The author excludes this site pending a ShellError rendering decision, but the line is on stdout (not stderr), so the ShellError stderr concern does not cover it. Remedy: append the argument bytes in the not-found line at both sites.Verification: After the change, the found branch writes the raw path bytes (which.rs:55, :137, :139). The not-found branch is untouched and still goes through
format_args!("{} not found\n", bstr::BStr::new(&arg))at which.rs:63, :114 and :122, so the argument name in that line is still mangled. The base branch already produced the identical mangled not-found line by the same route. -
🟣
src/bundler/LinkerContext.rs— Bundled CSS modules whose class identifiers contain non-UTF-8 bytes still collapse to one mangled name after this PR, while the path half of the same name is now byte-exact. LinkerContext.rs:2618 hashessource.path.prettyraw, but LinkerContext.rs:2624-2629 still writesoriginal_namethroughbstr::BStr::new, so.caf\xE9and.caf\xFEboth becomecaf\xEF\xBF\xBD_<hash>in the JS export table and the CSS output. Fix: buildfinal_generated_namewithstrings::concat(&[original_name, b"_", path_hash])so every part of the class name keeps its bytes, matching the sibling sites converted in this PR.Why this was flagged
Trigger: a
.module.cssfile saved in Latin-1 or another single-byte encoding with class names holding bytes >= 0x80, bundled withbun build(CSS modules path inLinkerContextsymbol mangling, LinkerContext.rs:2603-2634). The CSS tokenizer treats any non-ASCII byte as an identifier code point, so such identifiers reachsymbol.original_name. The PR converts the path hash input at LinkerContext.rs:2618 to raw bytes but leaves thewrite!(.., "{}_{}", bstr::BStr::new(original_name), bstr::BStr::new(path_hash))at :2624-2629, so each invalid byte of the identifier becomes U+FFFD. Two selectors that differ only in such bytes map to onemangled_propsentry name, and the stylesheet emitted merges their rules under one class while the JS export object exposes two keys pointing to the same string. This is the same defect class the PR title claims to remove ("CSS module hash"), at the site the hash is consumed, and the base behaves the same, so it is a sibling site left unconverted rather than a regression. Remedy: concatenateoriginal_nameandpath_hashas bytes.Verification: Pre-existing, acknowledged in the PR description's "Intentionally left out" list. Trigger: a
.module.cssbundled withbun buildwhose class identifiers contain non-UTF-8 bytes. src/bundler/LinkerContext.rs:2624-2629 still writesoriginal_namethroughbstr::BStr::new, so.caf\xE9and.caf\xFEcollapse to one mangled name in both the CSS and the JS export object.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the two riskier-looking source edits: the deleted <outfile>.map fallback in src/runtime/cli/build_command.rs is dead code (OutputFile::init sets dest_path from output_path, and both OutputKind::Sourcemap constructors in generateChunksInParallel.rs set it to <chunk>.map), and the which builtin's local line Vec is safe to drop after enqueue because IOWriter::enqueue copies it with extend_from_slice.
Extended reasoning...
The change removes lossy BStr Display formatting in four byte sinks (filter_run relay, build --outfile/.exe naming, CSS module hash input, shell which output) and adds Linux-gated tests; it touches no auth, crypto, or permission surface. The posted findings are test-convention nits, but one further verified finding is unposted, so approval is not available this run; the note records two source-level concerns examined and ruled out from the code.
…Buffer.alloc The two bundler tests read stdout with stderr and the exit code, and assert stderr and the exit code together. The long --filter line is made with Buffer.alloc, which a debug build does faster than String.prototype.repeat.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
I reviewed the latest push and found no bugs; the earlier nits ("x".repeat in the long-line fixture, undrained stdout in the bundler tests, the sleep-based split case) are all addressed. Because this changes the input to the CSS module class-name hash and deletes a branch in bun build --compile, a human look is still worthwhile.

Extended reasoning...
The branch replaces format_args!("{}", BStr::new(..)) byte-to-text conversions with byte concatenation in four sinks (run --filter output, build --outfile/.exe naming, CSS module hash key, shell which), changes bun_base64::wyhash_url_safe from fmt::Arguments to &[&[u8]], and adds Linux-gated tests plus a Wyhash11 chunked-update unit test. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface; the sensitive part is that the CSS hash feeds user-visible class names and the deleted sourcemap fallback is in the compile path. I verified the hash bytes are unchanged for valid UTF-8 and that the deleted fallback was unreachable, and prior review feedback was addressed in the last two commits, but the cross-crate API change and deletion in the compile path make a maintainer glance worthwhile rather than an unattended approve.

Provenance. The branch is merged with main 9634520. The measurements are from the first commit, on main 91e7e3b. Found by automated fuzzing. No user reported it and no issue exists.
