Problem

  • bun init -y on a full disk exits 0 and leaves index.ts, tsconfig.json and README.md as 0-byte files: InitCommand::exec (src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs) drops the Result of every scaffold write.
  • Over an existing package.json, init writes the Hello via Bun! stub at the literal main path if it is missing. With "main": "./index" beside index.js, bun . then runs the stub.

Fix

  • Every scaffold file is created with O_EXCL. A failed write removes it, prints ENOSPC: No space left on device: failed to write tsconfig.json (write) and exits 1. An existing file is left alone. An agent rule that cannot be written is skipped.
  • A package.json entry gets the stub only when it is a script file name and bun . finds no module for the package. --minimal never creates it.
  • An entry that cannot be created ("main": "./lib/") does not fail init. Init's own index.ts does.
  • Verified: test/cli/init/init.test.ts: 25 new tests, 22 fail on main, the file passes.

Background

  • The entry point is module or main from package.json, else an inferred index.ts. Bun resolves ./index to index.js, but an exact file named index wins.
  • Considered an extension-only rule. It misses ./index.js beside index.ts, so the gate asks the resolver, only when the named file is missing.

Downsides

  • bun init exits 1 where it exited 0 with an incomplete scaffold.
  • A package.json entry that is missing and resolves nowhere (an unbuilt dist/index.js) pays one resolver call. Other runs add no syscall and no allocation.
  • bun init --react no longer overwrites an existing README.md.
Notes

Scaffold writes

  • bun init writes package.json, .gitignore, the agent rule, the entry stub, tsconfig.json and README.md, then runs bun install. Each file after package.json is only created when it is missing, which is why a 0-byte leftover blocked a rerun.
  • Assets::check treats EEXIST as "leave it". The React README.md was the one template file opened with O_TRUNC; it is now skipped like the other template files.
  • package.json is serialized before the file is opened. A new one goes through the same writer. A pre-existing one, including one that could not be opened, read, or parsed as an object, is rewritten in place and never unlinked, and a failure reports its own errno (EACCES, EISDIR). A package.json that is a symlink to a missing file is written through the link, as on main. init: never write over a package.json that was not loaded #41807 takes the opposite rule for an unparsable file (exit 1, leave the file), so that arm follows whichever rule is chosen.
  • The Cursor rule and CLAUDE.md are extras for a detected editor. As on main, a rule that cannot be written does not stop init. It leaves no partial file.
  • Assets::create_new returns the error of a parent directory that cannot be created, so the message names the mkdir failure and not the ENOENT of the open that follows.
  • + package.json was never printed for a newly created package.json (a port artifact). It is printed now.
  • bun ignores SIGXFSZ, so a write past RLIMIT_FSIZE fails with EFBIG on the same path as ENOSPC. The write-failure tests run under sh -c 'ulimit -f N'. The tsconfig.json case needs a shell that counts ulimit -f in 512-byte blocks, so it is skipped where sh counts in KiB (macOS).

Entry stub

  • Four ways the stub shadowed a module, all covered by tests with -y, --minimal -y and -y <folder>: ./index beside index.js, ./index.js beside index.ts, a missing main beside index.js (index fallback), a missing module beside a main that exists.
  • Not a script, so never written: data.json, build/Release/addon.node, bin/cli, ./lib/, a/b/ (main used to leave an empty a/).
  • package_entry_loads makes the resolve that bun . makes: Resolver::resolve(cwd, ".", EntryPointRun). It answers "found" for every outcome but ModuleNotFound, so a project it cannot judge is left alone.
  • Two guards keep that call from aborting. bun . itself panics on main (range end index 5024 out of range for slice of length 4095, in bun_paths::resolve_path::normalize_string_generic_tz) for an over-long tsconfig extends or baseUrl, a 4 KB main, and a cwd of about 4090 bytes: 7 of 8 probed inputs. The gate turns tsconfig loading off and skips the resolve when cwd plus the longest main field could overflow. bun init -y exits 0 on all 8.
  • The documented case is unchanged: "main": "dist/index.js" with nothing built still gets the stub.
  • Without the non-fatal arm, the earlier revision of this PR turned ./lib/, a/b/, x.js/ and f/child.js (with f a file) into exit 1 for an existing project. All four exit 0 now.

Left for later

Question for a maintainer

  • A stub that cannot be created at a package.json entry is skipped in silence with exit 0, as on main. Should that arm print a one-line note?

Reported in the full-disk census (ledger #29533, #29535) and by a handoff from #44992.

no test proof · iteration 3 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/cli/init/init.test.ts

Each template file that bun init writes (package.json, .gitignore,
index.ts, tsconfig.json, README.md, CLAUDE.md / the cursor rule) went
through a helper whose Result the call sites dropped. On a full disk the
open succeeded, the write failed with ENOSPC, and init exited 0 with the
files left at 0 bytes. A rerun skipped them because they existed.

The helpers now share one writer that removes the file again when the
write fails. Every call site prints the errno and the file name and
exits 1. An open failure (inode exhaustion, EACCES) gets the same
message instead of "An internal error occurred (ENOSPC)".

Walkthrough

Summary

bun init checks whether a manifest entry point already resolves to a module before creating a stub. Scaffold files use exclusive creation, and failed writes report errors and remove newly created partial files. Tests cover entry-point selection and file-size-limit failures.

Changes

Init scaffold behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Manifest entry-point stub selection
src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs, test/cli/init/init.test.ts, docs/runtime/templating/init.mdx
Manifest-derived entry points receive a stub only when the path is safe, has a JavaScript-like filename, does not already resolve to a module, and initialization is not minimal. Tests cover resolved, unloaded, non-script, and uncreatable paths. The documentation describes the updated conditions.
Exclusive scaffold writes and error handling
src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs, test/cli/init/init.test.ts
Scaffold writes use exclusive creation. Existing files are skipped where applicable. Other write errors exit with status 1, and newly created files are removed after write failures. Agent-rule creation distinguishes an existing rule file and creates a Cursor symlink only when CLAUDE.md was created. POSIX tests cover EFBIG, cleanup, and a successful rerun.

Write failures. Reproduced on bun 1.4.3 (Linux x64) without a tmpfs mount, since RLIMIT_FSIZE drives the same write-error path:

mkdir app && cd app && sh -c 'ulimit -f 0; exec bun init -y'; echo rc=$?; ls -la
# 1.4.3: rc=0, package.json / .gitignore / index.ts / tsconfig.json / README.md all 0 bytes
# this branch: "EFBIG: File too large: failed to write package.json (write)", rc=1, directory empty

Entry stub. Reproduced on a release build of main (d940fbe):

mkdir app && cd app
echo '{ "name": "pkg", "main": "./index" }' > package.json
echo 'console.log("the real module")' > index.js
bun init -y && bun .
# main: prints "Hello via Bun!" (init wrote a file named `index`)
# this branch: prints "the real module"

The stub also shadows the module for "main": "./index.js" beside index.ts, a missing main beside index.js, and a missing module beside a main that exists: 12 of 12 probes on main, 0 of 12 on this branch.

Open problem on head d892759 (the PR is a draft until it is fixed). The stub check asks the module resolver, and the resolver aborts on a path that does not fit its buffer. With a 4 KB sideEffects entry in the package.json of the project or of a parent directory, and a main that names a missing script, bun init -y panics on this branch (range end index 4216 out of range for slice of length 4095). main exits 0 there. bun . panics on main for the same input (#43067 and #37529 are the open fixes for that class). I am reworking where the check lives.

I reviewed this and didn't find any bugs. The refactor is clean and the error handling now matches the repo's "never exit zero on a failure the user asked for" rule, but a human look would still be worthwhile given the user-visible behavior changes beyond the headline fix.

What was reviewed:

  • write_new_file's unlink-on-failure only reaches pre-existing paths via O_TRUNC callers, and those are all gated on steps.write_* which already checked !exists, so no user file is deleted that wasn't already truncated.
  • create_agent_rule narrows the CLAUDE.md → cursor-rule fallback from any error to EEXIST only (everything else is now fatal) — intentional per the description, but a semantic change.
  • + package.json now prints for a freshly-created file (previously never did); confirmed the old package_json_file.is_some() guard was a port artifact.
  • Second test's 512-byte cutoff relies on .gitignore/index.ts < 512 B and tsconfig.json > 512 B — brittle if asset sizes shift, but documented and would fail loud.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

The PR converts every silently-dropped Result in bun init's scaffold-writing path (src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs) into a reported error plus exit(1). It collapses three near-duplicate Assets helpers into one write_new_file(filename, flags, contents) that opens, writes, and unlinks the just-created file on write failure so a rerun can recreate it. All call sites (package.json, .gitignore, entry point, tsconfig/jsconfig, README.md, agent-rule files, React template files) now route through Assets::failed(err, filename) -> !. Two POSIX-only tests in test/cli/init/init.test.ts drive the failure with ulimit -f so a write past the limit returns EFBIG, which shares the code path with ENOSPC.

Security risks

None. This is local scaffold-file creation in the CLI; no network, auth, or untrusted input parsing is touched. The unlink-on-failure only removes a file bun init itself just opened (or, in the O_TRUNC case, already truncated), and every O_TRUNC caller is behind an existence check, so no pre-existing user content is newly at risk.

Level of scrutiny

Medium. The core pattern (let _ = … → if let Err(err) = … { Assets::failed(…) }) is mechanical and exactly what REVIEW.md's error-handling section asks for. But the diff also carries three behavior changes a reviewer should sign off on: (1) bun init now exits 1 where it used to exit 0 on any scaffold write failure, (2) the + package.json line is now printed for a fresh package.json (fixing a port bug the description calls out), and (3) create_agent_rule's CLAUDE.md fallback now fires only on EEXIST — any other errno is fatal instead of silently trying the cursor-rule path. All three look correct, but they are user-visible.

Other factors

Deleted helpers (create_with_contents, create_full_inner, create_full_with_contents) have no remaining callers in src/. create_new's signature change from &ZStr to &[u8] moves the NUL-terminate work into the one place it's still needed (the unlink cleanup). Tests follow the harness conventions closely: tempDir, spread bunEnv via initEnv, await using on the spawned process, Promise.all draining stdout/stderr/exited, output asserted before exit code, test.concurrent, and describe.skipIf(isWindows) with a comment naming why (ulimit -f / SIGXFSZ are POSIX-only). No CODEOWNER covers these paths. The second test's dependence on asset byte sizes is the only fragility I'd flag, and it's already commented in the test.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🔴 test/cli/init/init.test.ts — test/cli/init/init.test.ts is now a zero-byte file: all 504 lines of existing bun init coverage (basic init, non-TTY fallback, Ctrl-D, --react/tailwind/shadcn, --minimal, TS7 typecheck, twice-init, etc.) are deleted, and the two new write-failure tests the PR description claims to add are absent. Merging this leaves bun init with no tests at all. Fix: restore the full base contents of this file and add the new bun init when a file cannot be written block on top of it; do not leave the file empty (REVIEW.md: never delete a test without a stated reason or replacement; do not keep empty files).

    Extended reasoning...

git diff shows every line of test/cli/init/init.test.ts removed with no additions; wc -c on HEAD reports 0 bytes. The PR description says "Verified: test/cli/init/init.test.ts, new block bun init when a file cannot be written (2 tests, both fail on 1.4.3). The rest of the file passes", so the author intended to add tests, not delete them — the empty file was staged by mistake. On merge, CI stops exercising bun init entirely: any regression in the refactored Assets::create*/write_new_file/create_agent_rule paths, the react/shadcn templates, or the package.json rewrite would ship undetected, and the new fatal-on-write-error behavior itself has no automated coverage.

Verification: normal — git diff --stat shows test/cli/init/init.test.ts | 504 ---------- with zero additions, and wc -c test/cli/init/init.test.ts at HEAD reports 0 bytes (blob e69de29b, the empty-file hash). All 504 lines of base coverage — describe.concurrent("bun init", ...) with basic init, non-TTY fallback, Ctrl-D, --react/tailwind/shadcn, --minimal, TS7 typecheck, twice-init, cache…

The empty test/cli/init/init.test.ts was commit 57ee750, made from a checkout whose disk had filled up and truncated the file. It has been replaced (force-push) by f23167e: the file keeps all of its existing tests and adds the bun init when a file cannot be written block (+78 lines, no deletions). The test change itself: the failing file is now the Cursor rule (> 2 KiB) instead of tsconfig.json, because macOS /bin/sh counts ulimit -f in KiB and let the 735-byte tsconfig.json through.

if non-essential files fail to write and already existed we shouldn't exit 1

…skip

All template files are now created with O_EXCL. A file that already
exists (README.md, .gitignore, tsconfig.json, the agent rules, the React
template files) is left as it is and is never a reason to exit 1; only a
file that bun init creates itself and cannot fill is. The React README.md
used O_TRUNC because it needs placeholder substitution and so was the one
template file that overwrote an existing copy; it is now skipped like the
others.

Agreed. As of 39dc160 an existing file is never opened for writing and is never a reason to exit 1: every scaffold file is created with O_EXCL, and EEXIST means "leave it as it is" (Assets::check). Only a file that bun init creates itself and then cannot fill (full disk) exits 1, after removing the empty file.

In the blank template .gitignore, README.md and tsconfig.json were already only written when missing. The one place that rewrote an existing non-essential file was README.md in the --react templates (it used O_TRUNC to get placeholder substitution); it now prints ○ README.md (already exists, skipping) like the other template files and keeps the user's copy.

If you would rather have a missing-but-unwritable README.md / .gitignore / agent rule be a warning instead of exit 1 as well, say so and I will downgrade those.

#41807 takes the opposite rule for one input of this PR, so the two need one decision.

Here, a package.json that exists but could not be read, or is not a JSON object, is rewritten in place (the None if package_json_existed arm, O_WRONLY | O_TRUNC). In #41807, bun init prints the cause, exits 1 and leaves the file as it is, like npm init -y, bun add and bun pm pkg do for the same file.

The two PRs also conflict in src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs (4 hunks by git merge-tree). This PR merges cleanly with main today. Whichever lands second needs a rebase, and that arm must follow the rule that is chosen.

Over an existing package.json, bun init wrote the "Hello via Bun!" stub at
the literal `module`/`main` string whenever that exact path did not exist.
With `"main": "./index"` beside index.js, or `"main": "./index.js"` beside
index.ts, the stub then ran in place of the module the package resolved to
before. It was also written under --minimal, and into paths that are not
scripts (data.json, addon.node).

The stub gate now asks, for an entry that comes from package.json:
- is it a JavaScript or TypeScript file name, and
- does `bun .` fail to find a module for the package (the same resolve
that `bun .` makes, only reached when the named file is missing).
--minimal never creates the stub. A stub that cannot be created at a path
named by package.json does not fail init; init's own index.ts still does.
@robobun robobun changed the title init: report a scaffold file that cannot be written and exit 1 init: report failed scaffold writes, and do not create an entry stub that shadows a module Oct 14, 2026

🔴 A package.json whose sideEffects array holds a string of about 4 KB makes bun init -y panic where the base exits 0, when its main is a missing script. The guard in package_entry_loads at src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:1910 sizes only cwd plus the longest main field. The resolver's package.json parse joins cwd with every sideEffects entry into a 4096-byte buffer (src/resolver/package_json.rs:744, :781, :799), the same unchecked join that panics at src/paths/resolve_path.rs:1076. Fix: bound every package.json string the resolver joins with cwd, or have that join spill to the heap (join_spill) so no manifest content can abort init; unlikely input, so low severity.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: bun init -y in a directory whose package.json has "main": "index.ts" (a script name that does not exist and that no index file resolves for) and a "sideEffects" array containing one string whose length plus the cwd length exceeds 4096 bytes. entry_from_manifest is true, is_script_file_name passes, exists is false, so package_entry_loads(longest_main_field) runs at src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:889. Its only overflow guard at :1910 adds top_level_dir.len() + longest_main_field + 64, which is small here, so it proceeds to transpiler.resolver.resolve(top_level_dir, b".", EntryPointRun) at :1922. The resolver parses the cwd package.json with PackageJSON::parse; at src/resolver/package_json.rs:744, :781 and :799 each sideEffects string is joined with dir_with_trailing_slash() through r_fs.join, which is resolve_path::join into the 4096-byte thread-local JOIN_BUF and normalizes with buf[buf_i..buf_i + count].copy_from_slice(...) at src/paths/resolve_path.rs:1076 with no length check, so the process panics. On the base branch bun init -y never runs the resolver and exits 0 after writing the stub. The input is adversarial rather than common, so this is low severity.

Verification: src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:1910 sizes only top_level_dir.len() + longest_main_field + 64; sideEffects is not considered. PackageJSON::parse joins each sideEffects string via r_fs.join (src/resolver/package_json.rs:744, :781, :799) into the 4096-byte JOIN_BUF, and src/paths/resolve_path.rs:1076 copies with no bounds check. The base branch never instantiates a resolver, so it exits 0 on the same input.

🟡 (optional) Users whose package.json names a missing JS entry beside a root index.json now get no stub, and bun . fails with "Cannot run"; the base created the stub. package_entry_loads at src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:1922-1927 counts any resolution as found, but the resolver's index fallback walks the ESM extension order, which includes .json (src/bundler/options.rs:2017). bun . refuses Json files (src/runtime/cli/run_command.rs:2587). Fix: count a resolution as "loads" only when the resolved path's loader is one bun . runs (can_be_run_by_bun, Html or Md), so a non-script hit such as index.json still gets the stub.

Why this was flagged

A project has package.json with "main": "./index.js" (or "module": "./src/index.ts") that does not exist yet, plus an index.json data file at the root; the user runs bun init -y. is_script_file_name passes and exists() is false, so package_entry_loads is called at src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:889. The resolver fails the main field, then falls back to load_as_index_with_browser_remapping with extension_order DefaultEsm (src/resolver/resolver.rs:5803-5804), whose list ends in ".json" (src/bundler/options.rs:2016-2018), so index.json resolves and resolve returns Ok. The matches! at src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:1922-1927 therefore reports true and the stub is skipped. Running bun . resolves the same index.json; Loader::Json is not in can_be_run_by_bun (src/ast/loader.rs:140-145), so run_command.rs:2587 rejects it and prints "Cannot run" at src/runtime/cli/run_command.rs:2706-2714. On the base branch the stub index.js was created and bun . ran it. The gate never looks at the loader of the resolved file.

Verification: At src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:1922-1927 package_entry_loads treats every outcome except Err(ModuleNotFound) as "loads". The index fallback at src/resolver/resolver.rs:5803-5808 walks an extension list ending in .json, so index.json resolves and no stub is written. bun . gets Loader::Json, which can_be_run_by_bun rejects (run_command.rs:2587). On the base the stub was created.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: pre-existing: users whose package.json names a script entry that bun cannot create (EACCES, ENOSPC, EFBIG on the write) still get exit 0 and no message. At src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:896-898 the create_new result is dropped whenever entry_from_manifest is true, so a write failure is swallowed, as on the base branch. Fix: keep exit 0 for path-shape failures (ENOTDIR, EISDIR, ENOENT from a trailing-slash or file-as-directory main) but print a note: line, or fail, for errno values that mean the write itself failed, so the user learns the entry was not written. The PR description flags this as an open question; the review rules say a swallowed failure must not signal success.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: bun init -y in a directory with a package.json whose main is a script name that does not exist and that nothing resolves for, e.g. "main": "dist/index.js", on a full disk or where dist/ is not writable. The condition at src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:884-890 passes, Assets::create_new at src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:891 fails with ENOSPC/EFBIG/EACCES, and because entry_from_manifest is true the branch at src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:896-898 never calls Assets::check, so nothing is printed and exit stays 0 (unless a later scaffold write also fails). The base branch did the same via let _ = Assets::create_new(...), so this is pre-existing; the diff makes it a deliberate arm and the PR text asks whether it should print. write_new_file at src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:1023-1034 now unlinks the partial file, so the user is left with no entry file, no message, and an exit code that says init succeeded.

Verification: pre-existing. Trigger: bun init -y over a package.json whose main names a missing script, and the stub write fails with ENOSPC/EFBIG/EACCES. At src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:896-898 Assets::check is invoked only when !entry_from_manifest, so for a manifest entry the Result is dropped unread: no message, exit 0. The base commit (d940fbe) swallowed the error at the same site.
