…up already lists The three checks in InitCommand::exec that decide which packages to add each looked in one or two groups of the manifest. A package under another group got a second entry, and the nested install ran. Look up the four dependency groups once and ask one predicate for every package that bun init adds. An optional peer counts only in the group that the new entry goes to, because bun install does not install it.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline findings, I also checked whether widening needs_dependencies to all four groups changes bun init --react over a manifest that lists react only in devDependencies/peerDependencies — it does not, because the React templates return from exec before this block (src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:615-621), so needs_dependencies only ever iterates the empty Blank/Library list. The optionalDependencies + --omit=optional case was also examined; it is the same shape as the required-peer finding already posted, not a separate issue.
Extended reasoning...
The change rewrites the three "is this default dependency already listed" checks in the existing-package.json path of bun init into one predicate over the four dependency groups plus an optional-peer exception, and adds two test.each matrices against a local 404 registry. It touches no security-sensitive surface. Three inline findings were posted (required-peer with install.peer=false, peerDependenciesMeta without a peerDependencies key, and a per-test timeout nit), which is why this is not an approve; the note records sibling paths checked and ruled out.
…-any-dependency-group
bun install does not install every peer: it skips an optional peer, and install.peer = false skips all of them. A package.json that lists @types/bun only under peerDependencies keeps the devDependencies entry that bun init adds on main, and the check does not read peerDependenciesMeta. The new tests use the default timeout.

🟡 nit (optional): maintainers get a test matrix that never checks how bun init exited, unlike its sibling matrix at test/cli/init/init.test.ts:411. The second test.each at test/cli/init/init.test.ts:439-441 asserts only the manifest and the registry requests, while initOverPackageJson already returns exitCode, stdout and stderr. test/CLAUDE.md says to always check exit codes. Fix: assert exitCode is 0 for every row (for example expect(after).toMatchObject({ exitCode: 0 }) as the first matrix does), so a crash or error exit after the manifest write still fails the test.
Why this was flagged
The second parameterized test added at test/cli/init/init.test.ts:414-442 runs bun init over a prepared package.json via initOverPackageJson (test/cli/init/init.test.ts:352-381), which returns { manifest, requests, stdout, stderr, exitCode }. The test body at test/cli/init/init.test.ts:439-441 only checks after.manifest and after.requests; after.exitCode is never read. The sibling matrix in the same diff checks it at test/cli/init/init.test.ts:411. test/CLAUDE.md:201 reads "Always check exit codes and test error scenarios". The nested install failure is ignored by let _ = bun::spawn_sync_inherit(...) at src/runtime/cli/init_command.rs:943, so bun init exits 0 here today and the assertion is cheap; without it a future crash or nonzero exit that happens after package.json is written passes these three rows. The base branch has neither test, so this is a convention slip in the new code only.
Verification: nit. In the diff of test/cli/init/init.test.ts, the second matrix asserts only after.manifest and after.requests; after.exitCode (returned by initOverPackageJson) is never read. test/CLAUDE.md:201 reads "Always check exit codes and test error scenarios". A bun init that writes the manifest, triggers the install request, and then exits nonzero would still pass these three rows.
