Conversation
…xit 1 when the rewrite fails The extractor writes a plucked entry to its file as well as into the plucker, so a template from GitHub or the registry has its package.json on disk from the moment the entry is read. The local arm no longer sets the copied file to length 0 before the parse. The final write is a positional write at offset 0 and then a truncate to the new length. --no-package-json no longer opens the file of a local template. A package.json that does not parse, or whose root is not an object, keeps the template's text. The command prints the error with the path of the file and exits 1 before git. A package.json that cannot be written also ends the command with exit 1.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
A failed rewrite can leave package.json as neither the template text nor the new text.
pwrite_all(written, 0) writes over the template text in place. If the write fails partway, the file keeps a prefix of the new text and the tail of the old text. For example, EFBIG after 2048 bytes does this. If ftruncate fails instead, the file holds the new text followed by the old tail. In both cases the command exits with only the "failed to write" message, and the file is invalid JSON. This conflicts with the PR goal that the template text stays intact when a rewrite fails. The test at line 1267 does not check the destination content after this failure, so it does not catch the problem.
package_json_contents still holds the original text here. Restore it on failure before exiting.
🛡️ Proposed fix: best-effort restore of the template text

There was a problem hiding this comment.
🟡 nit (optional): Developers whose /bin/sh is bash (Fedora, RHEL, Amazon Linux, Arch) get two new failing tests on Linux. bash counts ulimit -f in 1024-byte blocks, so isMacOS ? 2 : 4 gives a 4096-byte limit there, not 2048. The 2.5 KB rewrite in "stops the command when its new text cannot be written" and the ~4 KB template in "is the start of the template's when the extractor cannot write all of it" then fit, no EFBIG is raised, and text.slice(0, 2048) does not match. Fix: make the limit independent of the shell's block size, e.g. probe the block size once in beforeAll or size the inputs so both 2048 and 4096 limits produce EFBIG and assert the invariant rather than the exact clamp point, as test/js/node/fs/fs.test.ts:4582 does.
Why this was flagged
The wrapper at test/cli/install/bun-create.test.ts:365 runs sh -c 'ulimit -f N' with N = 4 on every non-macOS platform, assuming 512-byte blocks (dash, busybox). bash on Linux uses 1024-byte blocks for -f, which the repository already records at test/js/node/fs/fs.test.ts:4582 ("block size is 512 (dash/busybox) or 1024 (bash)"). On a Linux host where /bin/sh is bash the limit is 4096 bytes. test/cli/install/bun-create.test.ts:1246 expects "package.json failed to write due to error EFBIG" for a rewrite of about 2.5 KB (180 keys at 14 bytes each), which fits in 4096, so the command succeeds and the assertion fails. test/cli/install/bun-create.test.ts:1310 builds oneLine(400), about 4 KB, and expects dest to hold text.slice(0, 2048); under a 4096-byte limit the whole template is written and both the dest and the EFBIG assertions fail. On the base branch neither test exists. The precedent at test/cli/install/bun-install-streaming-extract.test.ts:1511 uses 8192 blocks, which is loose enough to tolerate either block size; this test's margins are not.
Verification: nit. Triggering condition: running the suite on a Linux host whose sh on PATH is bash. test/cli/install/bun-create.test.ts:365 is ulimit -f ${isMacOS ? 2 : 4}, but every bash counts ulimit -f in 1024-byte units, so on bash-as-sh Linux the child's RLIMIT_FSIZE is 4096, not the 2048 the tests hard-code. The EFBIG assertion at :1278 and text.slice(0, 2048) at :1317 then fail; the only gate is it.skipIf(!isPosix).

🟡 (optional) Users whose template's package.json has a comment or trailing comma now get exit 1, no git repo, no install and no tasks, where base finished with exit 0. The parse at create_command.rs:858-866 uses ..JSON::JSONOptions::DEFAULT, which sets allow_comments and allow_trailing_commas to false, and the new arm at create_command.rs:868-880 turns every parse error into Global::exit(1). Fix: parse the template's package.json with the same options the rest of bun uses for package.json, ..JSON::PACKAGE_JSON_OPTS (src/parsers/json.rs:60), as pm_pkg_command.rs:177 and WorkspacePackageJSONCache.rs:63 do, so only genuinely malformed files hit the new exit. The description calls this an accepted cost pending another PR; the constant already exists in this checkout, so the fix needs no merge ordering. [also at: src/runtime/cli/create_command.rs:861 - Users running bun create on a template whose package.json has a comment or trailing comma now get exit 1 and no git repository, although every other bun command accepts that file.]
Why this was flagged
A local or GitHub template whose package.json contains a // comment or a trailing comma, run through bun create <template> dest. bun install, bun pm pkg and bun pm version all parse package.json with PACKAGE_JSON_OPTS (src/parsers/json.rs:60-64), so such a package.json is valid for the rest of bun. create_command.rs:859-862 builds JSONOptions from JSONOptions::DEFAULT (src/parsers/json.rs:27-29, both flags false), so parse_classic logs JSON does not support comments (src/parsers/json.rs:162-176) and returns Err. On the base branch the Err arm did break 'process_package_json and the command went on to git init and exit 0. After the change the result => arm at create_command.rs:868-880 prints the log, the note line, and calls Global::exit(1) before git init, so the scaffold is left half done. No guard narrows this: the exit fires on every parse Err, and the PR description lists comments and trailing commas as inputs that now exit 1 until a separate PR lands; that PR is not in this checkout, while PACKAGE_JSON_OPTS is.
Verification: create_command.rs:858-862 parses with ..JSON::JSONOptions::DEFAULT, which sets allow_comments: false, allow_trailing_commas: false (src/parsers/json.rs:27-29); PACKAGE_JSON_OPTS at json.rs:60-64 allows both. The new arm at create_command.rs:867-881 turns any Err into Global::exit(1), so git init never runs. On base the same parse failed but break 'process_package_json led to git init and exit 0.

🟡 (optional) Users whose package.json write fails during a remote create now get a half-extracted template and a message that blames only package.json. The extractor aborts at src/libarchive/lib.rs:1911 when take_file fails, so every tarball entry after package.json is never written. create_command.rs:603 then prints "package.json failed to write due to error EFBIG" and exits 1 without saying the rest of the template is missing. On the base branch the extractor kept the bytes in memory, extracted every entry, and only the final rewrite failed. Fix: either keep extracting after a failed take_file and report the write error after the loop, or add a note: line stating the template is incomplete and which entry stopped it.
Why this was flagged
Trigger: bun create owner/repo dest (or an @ bun-examples name) where writing the plucked package.json fails (EFBIG under ulimit -f, ENOSPC, EIO) while later entries would have written fine. At src/libarchive/lib.rs:1911 plucker_.take_file(output.fd)? returns from extract_to_disk, so entries after package.json in the tarball are never created. create_command.rs:596-606 sees found && !fd.is_valid() and prints only "package.json failed to write due to error {}" then exits 1. The base at the same site assigned the fd and continued, so dest held the complete template with a 0-byte package.json. The user now has a partial dest and a message that points only at package.json; fixing package.json by hand leaves a broken template. The dismissal folded this into the wording nit at create_command.rs:338, but the missing-files consequence needs a different fix (defer the error or state the incompleteness).
Verification: Trigger: a remote bun create where the pwrite of package.json fails while later entries would have written. src/libarchive/lib.rs:1911 take_file(output.fd)? returns on the write error, so every entry after package.json is never written. src/runtime/cli/create_command.rs:596-606 exits 1 without mentioning the rest of the template was not extracted. On the base every entry was extracted.

🟡 (optional) Users whose disk fills during the final package.json rewrite now get a file holding the start of the new text followed by the tail of the template's old text, with no message saying the file is corrupt. At create_command.rs:1041 pwrite_all(written, 0) overwrites in place and ftruncate(len) runs only after it succeeds, so a partial pwrite followed by ENOSPC leaves mixed content. The helper at create_command.rs:336 prints only "package.json failed to write due to error ENOSPC". On the base branch the local arm truncated to 0 first, so a partial write left only new-text bytes. Fix: write the new text to a temp file and rename over package.json, or on write failure restore the template bytes still in package_json_contents and say so on a note: line.
Why this was flagged
Trigger: any bun create (local or remote) where the pwrite at create_command.rs:1041 writes some bytes then fails (ENOSPC on a nearly full disk, EFBIG when the new text crosses the limit, EIO). pwrite_all in src/sys/file.rs:226-236 returns the error after a partial write. The ftruncate in the and_then at create_command.rs:1042 never runs, so bytes past the written prefix keep the template's old content. The user sees exit 1 and "package.json failed to write due to error " from create_command.rs:337, which does not say the file is a mix of two texts. On the base branch the local arm ran ftruncate(pkg, 0) before parsing and the remote arm opened with O_TRUNC, so a partial write left only new-text bytes. The dismissal relied on the PR table documenting the outcome; the author's statement does not make the corrupt file readable. Remedy: temp-file-and-rename, or rewrite the retained template bytes on failure and state it.
Verification: nit — triggered when the final rewrite's pwrite at src/runtime/cli/create_command.rs:1041 writes part of the new text and then fails. pwrite_all returns the error after a partial write, so the ftruncate at create_command.rs:1042 never runs. The only output is exit_package_json_not_written (create_command.rs:336-339). On the base branch the same failure left a truncated prefix of the new text.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: pre-existing: a local template whose package.json cannot be opened, stat'ed or read still ends with exit 0, while the write side of the same rewrite now exits 1. At create_command.rs:732-734 an open failure is swallowed with .ok() and prints nothing; at create_command.rs:746-758 and 781-793 a stat or pread error prints "Error reading package.json: ..." and then break 'read_package_json lets the command continue to git init, tasks and the success message. Fix: make every read-side failure of the rewrite fail the command the way the write side does, by printing the errno with the path and calling Global::exit(1) (or routing through exit_package_json_not_written) at the open, stat and pread sites, which covers the 3 sites listed. [also at: src/runtime/cli/create_command.rs:735 - pre-existing: a local template whose package.json cannot be opened or read still ends with exit 0 and the file keeps the template's name and its "bun-create" section.]
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.
Why this was flagged
A local template directory with a package.json, run through bun create <folder> dest. After file_copier_copy, create_command.rs:732-734 opens <dest>/package.json with .ok(): EACCES or EMFILE leaves package_json_file None with no message at all. If the open succeeds but pkg.stat() (create_command.rs:746-758) or pkg.pread_all (create_command.rs:781-793) fails, the code prints "Error reading package.json: ", sets package_json_file = None and breaks out of 'read_package_json. Flow then reaches line 845 with package_json_file None, skips the rewrite, runs git init, tasks and prints the success message with exit 0. The base branch behaves the same on these sites, but the PR makes the write-side siblings at create_command.rs:1038 and 1044 exit 1 via exit_package_json_not_written, so the user now gets exit 1 for a write failure of the rewrite and exit 0 for a read failure of the same rewrite.
Verification: pre-existing. bun create <local-folder> dest where <dest>/package.json cannot be opened, stat'ed or read. The .ok() at src/runtime/cli/create_command.rs:732-734 leaves package_json_file = None; stat or pread errors (lines 746-758, 781-793) break 'read_package_json and fall through to the success message and exit 0. The write side now exits 1 via exit_package_json_not_written.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: On a filesystem whose pwrite can return 0 for a non-empty buffer (FUSE, some network mounts), users get a package.json padded with NUL bytes, a success message, and exit 0. pwrite_all at src/sys/file.rs:229-231 returns Ok(()) when pwrite returns 0, so create_command.rs:1041 then runs ftruncate(len) and extends the file with zeros past the unwritten part. The same helper is now also used in take_file at src/libarchive/lib.rs:1300, so the extracted template copy can be zero-filled the same way. Fix: make pwrite_all (and write_all) return an error when a write returns 0 with bytes remaining, so both the extractor and the rewrite exit 1 instead of reporting success.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.
Why this was flagged
Trigger: bun create into a destination on a filesystem where a write syscall can return 0 without an errno for a non-empty buffer (FUSE drivers and some NFS/SMB mounts do this; Linux passes the 0 through to userspace). At src/sys/file.rs:228-231 pwrite_all treats n == 0 as success and returns Ok(()). At create_command.rs:1041-1042 the and_then then calls bun_sys::ftruncate(package_json_file.handle, written.len()), which extends the file to the full length with NUL bytes. No error is printed, git init and the success message run, exit 0. The new take_file at src/libarchive/lib.rs:1300 uses the same helper, so the extracted copy can be zero-filled too. The base used write_all (file.rs:146-155) with the same hole, but this PR moved the only two writes of the file onto pwrite_all and added a second site, so the fix belongs in the helper: return an error on a zero-length write with bytes remaining.
Verification: pre-existing. Trigger: pwrite(2) returning 0 for a non-empty buffer. src/sys/file.rs:229-231 pwrite_all does if n == 0 { return Ok(()); }, so a zero-length write is reported as success. At src/runtime/cli/create_command.rs:1041 the ftruncate then extends the file to written.len() with NUL bytes and exit 0. The base branch fails by the identical route via write_all at src/sys/file.rs:149-151.

The Windows branch of the local arm no longer saves and restores the file position, because the final write is positional.Self-review: the 2 concerns that are not addressed
Error reading package.jsonsites of the local arm (fstatandpreadof the copied file) still print the error, skip the rewrite and go on to exit 0. The file is intact. An exit there needs a rewrite of the read block, because on Windows its label would have nobreakleft, and no test reaches either site.ftruncatestays unconditional, as on main. A review asked to call it only when the new text is shorter, and to write the old text back when the write fails. Not changed
package.jsonis a link: the copy skips the link, and bun still opens and rewrites apackage.jsonthat the destination already has. With--no-package-jsonbun no longer opens it (on main it empties it). The check that follows the link isexists_at(create_command.rs:709on main).package.jsonentry has 0 bytes still replaces apackage.jsonthat the destination already has, without--force(checked on both builds: 21 to 0 bytes, exit 0). The conflict check before the extraction skips entries of 0 bytes (src/libarchive/lib.rs,get_overwriting_file_list).bun initreplaces apackage.jsonthat does not parse and exits 0 (checked on the build of main).
