Problem

  • A script npm run build -w client fails when client is a folder and not a package name. The error is error: No workspace packages matched the filter "client". npm runs it.
  • Bun rewrites a script's npm run to bun run. The helper (src/install/lifecycle_script_runner.rs:311) wrote --filter=<value>, and --filter reads a bare word as a package name.

Fix

  • bun run takes npm's -w, --workspace <value>: a package name, its folder, or the parent folder. select_packages (src/runtime/cli/filter_arg.rs) ports the four tests of npm's lib/utils/get-workspaces.js.
  • The helper writes -w <value>.
  • As in npm, the packages run in flag order and an empty selection fails.
  • Verified: test/cli/run/workspaces.test.ts and test/cli/install/bun-run.test.ts (77 tests fail on main). npm 11.16.0 agrees on 100/100 pairs of one fixture (main: 80).

Background

Downsides

  • The flag counts only before the script name. bun run build -w client still passes -w client to the script.
  • A bun on PATH without the flag refuses the rewritten line (Invalid Argument '-w'). No release has main's --filter= rewrite.
  • Each bun run start: +278 of 2.2 M instructions, +1 realloc call. bun <file>: none. Binary: +8,192 B.
Notes

Before and after (debug builds of main at 6f58f6b without and with this change, npm 11.16.0 as the reference). In the fixture, the folder client holds @scope/web, and packages/b has the name client.

script line main this PR npm
npm run build -w client runs packages/b only. Exit 1 when no package has that name runs both runs both
npm run build -w packages, -w ./packages, -w packages/ exit 1 runs a and b runs a and b
npm run build -w /abs/path/client, -w @org/d (a folder) exit 1 runs it runs it
npm run build -w ./client --workspaces runs all 5 packages runs client runs client
npm run build -w shared -w app (app reads what shared builds) both at once, app fails one after the other one after the other
npm run build -w nope --if-present exit 0, nothing ran exit 1 exit 1
npm run build --workspace={a,b} runs both runs both (-w={a,b}) runs both
pnpm run -w build bun run -w build: Invalid Argument '-w' left to pnpm

What bun run -w <value> does

  • It selects the package with that exact name, the package in that folder, and the packages directly inside that folder. A path is read from the working directory.
  • Several values add up. The packages run one after another: in the order of the flags, then in the order of workspaces, then by path. A failure does not stop the next package, and the run exits non-zero.
  • A package that a value selects must have the script, unless --if-present is set. If not, the run fails before a script starts: Script "build" not found in package "x". npm runs the other packages first and then exits 1.
  • Nothing selected: error: No workspace packages matched --workspace "x", exit 1, also with --if-present. A value that selects nothing next to one that selects: one warn: line. npm prints nothing there.
  • With --filter, a value is one more positive pattern. A ! pattern takes packages away from it. A package that only --filter selects may lack the script, as before.
  • --workspaces adds no packages to the ones that --workspace selects.
  • -ws and -wclient stay errors (Invalid Argument '-ws'): npm reads -ws as --workspaces. bun as node and bare bun do not have the flag.
  • A value longer than the path buffer selects by name only. It is not a crash.

Where the result differs from npm

  • Bun finds the workspace root and its packages as for --filter. From a folder that is not a member, npm reports No workspaces found and bun selects. From a member that has its own workspaces, bun stops at that member.
  • A package without a name is selected by its path only. npm also takes its folder name.
  • A value with an inner .. that stands for a parent folder (-w client/..) selects nothing. A backslash in a value is a separator on POSIX too.
  • Windows is not tested here. An absolute path with a drive letter is joined with the platform's rules, by code reading.
  • A wider matrix has 75 values and 12 working directories. It has packages without a name, dot folders, a nested root and folders that are not members. bun and npm agree on 818 of the 900 pairs. The first three points are all of the 82.

Decisions a maintainer may overrule

  1. The letter -w. It is npm's. pnpm's -w is --workspace-root, and -w (workspace) flag to run bun at the workspace/monorepo root #17466 asks for that meaning on other commands. The rewrite needs a spelling that a bun without the flag refuses. Such a bun skips an unknown --workspace=x in silence and runs the script of the current package.
  2. The run order. --filter and --workspaces start packages at the same time, in dependency order. A selection of only --workspace values runs in npm's order.
  3. A missing script stops the run before a script starts. --workspaces does the same on main.
  4. The flag is not on bare bun. There bun -w fmt is bun fmt -w. The table of bare bun also feeds the process.execArgv parser and the flag list of the package manager commands. The cost there would be small: one 72-byte table row.

Not changed by this PR

In flight on the same files

If a release is tagged from main first

main's --filter=<name> rewrite would then be released. A bun without the flag refuses the -w that this PR writes, where that release ran a name value. The helper would then write --filter=<main's text> --workspace=<value>, and select_packages would drop the warning for the filter that repeats a matched value.

Measurements (release builds of main at 6f58f6b without and with this change, linux-x64)

  • bun run noop: 3,089,945 -> 3,090,226 instructions (+281). bun run nope: +278. instructions:u through perf_event_open, ASLR off, 5 runs, spread under 150. Argument parsing: +0 allocations, +1 realloc call (gdb breakpoints on the mimalloc entry points).
  • bun ./nope.js: -60, bun nope: -90, bun --revision: -33, bun install --help: -164. These paths get no new work. .rodata.startup: +0 B (8,488 B in both linker maps). bun -e 0: 4.23 M, the noise of 15,000 hides any delta.
  • Binary: 107,276,000 -> 107,284,192 B (+8,192). .text +10,752 B: select_packages +6,162, require_scripts +740, arguments::parse +562. The bun run flag table: +72 B. size_of::<ContextData>(): 2032 -> 2032.
  • select_packages makes the same allocator calls as main for --filter=pkg-a, --filter=./packages/a and --workspaces. The counts are 191 / 7 / 159, 191 / 7 / 159 and 190 / 7 / 114 (alloc / realloc / free). -w pkg-a makes 200 / 7 / 168, which is 9 more than the --filter=pkg-a that main ran. strace is not installed, so system calls are not counted.
  • Tested buns without the flag: 1.3.14, 1.4.2, 1.4.3, a canary of September, and main at 6f58f6b. Each rejects bun run -w V build (18 of 18 lines) and bun run -w=V build (5 of 5) with error: Invalid Argument '-w', exit 1. bun run --workspace=client build on 1.4.3 runs the root's script, exit 0.
  • Unchanged next to the flag: bun as node with -w V x.js (exit 1) and --workspace=V x.js (runs), bun x -w, bun -w fmt. Changed text, same exit code: bun run -ws build names -ws and not -w.

Tests

  • test/cli/run/workspaces.test.ts: 65 new rows. The selection and order rows were checked against npm run build -w ... of npm 11.16.0 on the same fixture (33 rows).
  • test/cli/install/bun-run.test.ts: 10 of 13 pinned rewrite strings re-typed (7 to -w V, 3 to -w=V), 8 new rows. Three not.toContain("--filter") guards became positive checks of the unmoved text, because the rewritten text has no --filter to look for.
  • test/cli/run/filter-workspace.test.ts: one [run] bunfig row.
  • Failures on a debug build of main at 6f58f6b: 58 tests of workspaces.test.ts, 18 of the 41 tests in the touched blocks of bun-run.test.ts, and the bunfig row. The long-path row came after that run. It fails on a bun without the flag (Invalid Argument '-w'). The rows that pass on main pin what does not change.
  • Also run: multi-run, if-present, as-node, run_command, run-eval, test/cli/bun.test.ts, the flag tests of bun-install and bunx. cargo clippy on the four crates, cargo miri test -p bun_clap (with the new param_rules unit test), and test/internal/source-lints/.

Self-review

41 concerns raised, 36 addressed. The first version of this change had four wrong results. It ran every package for -w packages --filter '!pkg-b'. It ran several values at the same time. It split --workspace={a,b} into a value and a script name. It turned pnpm run -w build into bun run -w build. Not taken:

  • Split the flag from the rewrite: kept in one change, with the release condition above.
  • Move the matcher into workspace_selection.rs: only bun run has a value of this kind.
  • Read a quoted npm run in the helper: left for after run: read -s, --silent and -ws of a script's npm run #45874.
  • --ws for bun run and --workspace for bare bun: separate decisions.
  • A test row that runs the real npm: a test must not need npm on the machine.

…ipt's `npm run`

`bun run` takes `-w, --workspace <value>`, before the script name. The value
selects the workspace packages that npm selects for it: the package with
that name, the package in that folder, and the packages directly inside
that folder. The matching follows the four tests of npm's
lib/utils/get-workspaces.js, in `select_packages`, where the names and the
folders of the workspace packages are known.

The rewrite of `npm run` in a package.json script now passes the value of
`-w` / `--workspace` on as `-w <value>`, or `-w=<value>` where the script
has the `=`. Before, it wrote `--filter=<value>`, and `--filter` reads a word
without a leading dot as a package name. So `npm run build -w client` failed
with `No workspace packages matched the filter "client"` when `client` was
the folder of a package with another name.

A run with `--workspace` follows npm in these points. The packages run one
after another, in the order of the flags. `--workspaces` adds no packages.
A run that selects nothing fails, also with `--if-present`. A package that
a value selects must have the script, unless `--if-present` is set. With
`--filter`, a value counts as one more positive pattern.

The argument parser gets a rule per command for a param of a shared table.
`bun run` refuses a value that is glued to `-w`, because npm reads `-ws` as
`--workspaces`. bun as `node` does not have the flag. `pnpm run -w` is no
longer rewritten to `bun run -w`: pnpm's `-w` is `--workspace-root`.

Status

Reproduced on a debug build of main with this fixture:

  • Root package.json: "workspaces": ["client"] and "scripts": { "dev": "npm run build -w client" }.
  • client/package.json: "name": "@scope/web" and "scripts": { "build": "echo client-build-ok" }.

bun run dev printed $ bun run --filter=client build, then error: No workspace packages matched the filter "client", and the exit code was 1. npm 11.16.0 prints client-build-ok.

With this PR, bun run dev prints $ bun run -w client build and runs the build script of @scope/web.

Walkthrough

bun run adds npm-compatible -w and --workspace flags. Workspace values select packages by name or path, and selected scripts follow workspace selection order. CLI parsing, lifecycle-script rewriting, tests, and documentation are updated.

Changes

Workspace Run Support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Command-specific parameter parsing
src/clap/*, src/runtime/cli/Arguments.rs
The parser accepts rules for absent parameters and separate-value short options. bun run parses workspace values, while node emulation marks the option absent.
Workspace arguments and package selection
src/options_types/context.rs, src/runtime/cli/Arguments.rs, src/runtime/cli/filter_arg.rs, src/install/PackageManager/workspace_selection.rs, docs/runtime/index.mdx, docs/snippets/cli/run.mdx, docs/guides/install/from-npm-install-to-bun-install.mdx, docs/pm/filter.mdx, test/cli/run/workspaces.test.ts
Pattern filters and workspace values use distinct types. Package selection supports workspace names and paths, combines workspace values with patterns, and records selection order. Documentation and tests cover the options and selection behavior.
Script validation and selection order
src/runtime/cli/filter_arg.rs, src/runtime/cli/filter_run.rs, src/runtime/cli/multi_run.rs, test/cli/run/workspaces.test.ts, test/cli/run/filter-workspace.test.ts
Selected packages are checked for requested scripts unless --if-present is set. Workspace runs preserve user-provided order, with related changes to script chaining and package sorting.
Lifecycle-script workspace rewriting
src/install/lifecycle_script_runner.rs, test/cli/install/bun-run.test.ts
npm workspace arguments are rewritten to Bun’s -w form while preserving their separator. The pnpm run -w case is not rewritten. Tests cover workspace command rewrites.

Keep pnpm run --workspace-root unchanged.

If a script uses pnpm run --workspace-root build, this check misses pnpm’s long form of -w. The command becomes bun run --workspace-root build, although Bun does not provide pnpm’s workspace-root option. Check both spellings before rewriting. Add the long form to the passthrough test. (pnpm.io)

Skip the lifecycle chain when --if-present skips the requested script.

require_scripts returns early when ctx.if_present is enabled, but the collection loop still processes pre<name> and post<name> independently. A selected workspace without build can therefore run a lifecycle hook and produce a nonzero overall exit status. The later workspace script still runs, so the failure does not prevent b from running.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the shared clap parser change in src/clap/streaming.rs: every new branch is gated on param_rules, which is empty for every command except run and run-as-node, so the other commands' parsing is unchanged. The --if-present exit 1 on an empty --workspace selection and the in-given-order (non-dependency) run order match the PR's stated npm-parity intent rather than being oversights.

Extended reasoning...

The change adds an npm-compatible -w/--workspace flag to bun run, threads a ParamRule table through the shared clap parser, rewrites filters to a PackageFilter enum, and changes the npm run -w script rewrite to emit -w; it touches no auth, crypto, or data-exposure surface. Four confirmed findings are posted inline (older-bun-on-PATH breakage of the rewrite, untranslated -ws and --workspace-root, duplicate runs for overlapping workspaces entries), so a human look is already signaled; this note only records what else was ruled out.

🔴 Scripts containing npm run <s> -w <pkg> now exit 1 with error: Invalid Argument '-w' whenever an older bun answers to bun on PATH; base's --filter= rewrite ran there. src/install/lifecycle_script_runner.rs:318 writes -w, and path_for_run (src/runtime/cli/run_command.rs:2015) adds the running bun's shim dir only when no node is on PATH, so a pinned bun devDependency in node_modules/.bin, or a system bun ahead of ~/.bun/bin, parses the line. Fix: emit a spelling every bun honors, such as --filter=<base text> --workspace=<value> (old bun honors --filter and skips the unknown long flag; new bun dedupes the pair). The PR's note that no release has the --filter= rewrite holds against releases, not against base.

Why this was flagged

A package.json script reads npm run hello -w app and the project also has bun pinned in devDependencies, or a system bun older than the one the user invokes sits earlier on PATH; node is installed. The user runs the new bun: bun run start. append_npm_run_in_workspaces at src/install/lifecycle_script_runner.rs:318-320 rewrites the line to bun run -w app hello. RunCommand::path_for_run (src/runtime/cli/run_command.rs:2015) prepends the bun-node shim dir, which holds a bun link to the running binary, only when force_using_bun || !found_node; with node on PATH it prepends node_modules/.bin dirs ahead of the original PATH, so bun resolves to the older binary. That binary has no -w short in RUN_TABLE and reaches src/clap/streaming.rs:321, printing error: Invalid Argument '-w' and exiting 1 before any script runs. On the base branch the same helper wrote --filter=app, which every released bun parses, so the script ran in app.

Verification: src/install/lifecycle_script_runner.rs:318-320 now emits -w + separator + value (base emitted --filter= + value). src/runtime/cli/run_command.rs:2015 only prepends the bun-node shim dir when node is absent, so bun resolves to whatever older bun sits there. An older bun's clap refuses an unknown short flag with error: Invalid Argument '-w' (src/clap/lib.rs:340), exiting 1.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: pre-existing: a script line npm run build -ws (npm's short alias of --workspaces) is still not translated, so bun run runs only the current package's script, exit 0, while npm runs every workspace. The token match at src/install/lifecycle_script_runner.rs:278-280 handles -w, --workspace, --workspaces and --ws but not -ws, so -ws lands in rest and is handed to the script as an argument. Fix: treat -ws like --workspaces in this match (and -ws before the script name, which otherwise becomes bun run -ws build and fails with Invalid Argument '-ws'), so every npm spelling of the flag is rewritten.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.

Why this was flagged

A package.json script such as "start": "npm run build -ws" (npm documents -ws as the alias of --workspaces) is run with bun run start, which rewrites it through replace_package_manager_run at src/install/lifecycle_script_runner.rs:201-211. append_npm_run_in_workspaces matches b"--workspaces" | b"--ws" at src/install/lifecycle_script_runner.rs:280 but has no arm for b"-ws", so the token goes to rest at src/install/lifecycle_script_runner.rs:302-303 and selects_workspaces stays false; the helper returns 0 and the line becomes bun run build -ws. bun run stops after the script name, so -ws is passed to the root's build script and only the root runs, exit 0; npm runs build in every workspace. The base branch has the same gap (it produced Invalid Argument '-w' there), so this is pre-existing; the diff reworks this match for -w and documents the -ws spelling in test/cli/run/workspaces.test.ts:301 without covering it in the helper.

Verification: pre-existing — triggered when a package.json script contains npm run <script> -ws. The match at src/install/lifecycle_script_runner.rs:278-306 has no arm for -ws, so it is pushed to rest (302-303), producing bun run build -ws, which runs only the current package's script, whereas npm runs the script in every workspace. The base already fails the same way by the same route.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: nit, pre-existing: a script line pnpm run --workspace-root build is still rewritten to bun run --workspace-root build, which runs the current package's script instead of the root's. The new guard at src/install/lifecycle_script_runner.rs:227 only recognises the short spelling -w of pnpm's flag, so the long form keeps the old wrong rewrite. Fix: leave pnpm run alone for every spelling of pnpm's workspace-root flag (-w and --workspace-root), the same way the guard now does for -w.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.

Why this was flagged

A package.json script reads pnpm run --workspace-root build and bun runs it (bun run, bun install lifecycle). replace_package_manager_run at src/install/lifecycle_script_runner.rs:226 matches the pnpm run prefix and the new token scan at :227-229 only looks for the exact word -w, so --workspace-root passes and the line becomes bun run --workspace-root build. bun run skips an unknown long flag, so the build script of the current package runs rather than the root package's, with no error. The base branch behaves the same for this spelling; the diff fixes only the -w spelling, which the new bun run -w would otherwise reject with Invalid Argument.

Verification: pre-existing. Triggering condition: a package.json script that reads pnpm run --workspace-root <script> and is run by bun. The new guard at src/install/lifecycle_script_runner.rs:226-229 excludes only the exact token -w, so pnpm run --workspace-root build still takes the rewrite branch and becomes bun run --workspace-root build. The base already fails the same way, so this is not newly introduced.

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: With workspaces: ["packages/*", "packages/a"], bun run -w packages build runs a's build twice, one after the other, and prints two a entries; npm runs it once. PackageFilterIterator yields the same package.json once per matching entry (filter_arg.rs:599-617) and discovery at filter_arg.rs:225-231 pushes both, so select_npm_workspaces marks both copies and in_given_order sorts them adjacent (filter_arg.rs:343). Fix: dedupe discovered packages by package_json_path before selection so every selector (--filter, --workspace, --workspaces) runs a package once.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.

Why this was flagged

A root package.json lists a glob and a literal path that overlap, a common way to pin ordering. bun run -w packages build or the rewritten npm run build -w packages walks packages/*/package.json and packages/a/package.json (filter_arg.rs:599-617), pushes a twice (filter_arg.rs:225-231), and select_npm_workspaces gives both copies a workspace_value. The sort at filter_arg.rs:343 puts them next to each other; filter_run.rs:1118 then sets follows_previous for the second copy because the package_json_path is equal, so when the first build fails the second copy prints a build: Skipped, and when it succeeds the build runs twice in sequence (doubling build time for that package). npm's map-workspaces keys by name and runs once. The base ran duplicates concurrently under --filter, so the finder called it pre-existing, but the new sequential --workspace mode and the new npm-parity contract make the doubled run visible on every such repo. Remedy: dedupe discovered by package_json_path.

Verification: Triggering condition: a root workspaces array with overlapping entries (e.g. ["packages/*", "packages/a"]) and bun run -w packages build. The discovery loop (src/runtime/cli/filter_arg.rs lines 205-232) pushes a WorkspacePackage per yielded path; nothing dedupes, so a's build runs twice. The base has the same undeduped discovery, so --filter a already runs a twice on main.
