Problem

  • new Bun.FileSystemRouter({ origin }) crashes with panic(main thread): Segmentation fault at address 0x0 when origin is over the string limit. ASAN reports heap-use-after-free ... WRITE of size 8 in VirtualMachine::ref_counted_string_with_was_new. --hot/--watch hit the same write.
  • String::create_external frees the intern's boxed RefString when the bytes are over the limit (src/bun_core/string/mod.rs:328). The intern then writes to the box and keeps its pointer.
  • No user reported it: a default process needs a 1 GiB non-ASCII origin.

Fix

  • ref_counted_string returns Result<NonNull<RefString>, StringTooLong>. On a miss it checks the length before it copies the bytes. It also handles create_external's dead string.
  • The router and the --hot/--watch transpile throw ERR_STRING_TOO_LONG. A hit has no check, so no working input is refused.
  • Verified: test/js/bun/util/filesystem_router.test.ts, test/cli/hot/hot.test.ts, test/cli/watch/watch.test.ts (5 new tests, all fail on the released build). Ran all three files.
  • Self-reviewed: 5 concerns raised, 5 addressed.

Background

  • The ref-string intern is a per-VM map from a 32-bit hash to a RefString. It holds --hot/--watch module text and each router's strings.
  • Considered a check in each caller: the write stays in the shared function. Considered a create_external that returns its context: it changes two correct, untested callers.

Downsides

  • Release .text grows by 256 B. A hit pays nothing, and a miss adds one compare.
  • Without --hot, a module over the real limit still loads as an empty program (src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:3229).
  • The router counts UTF-8 bytes, but the error says characters.
Notes

Where this comes from. The review of #33866 found it (#33866 (comment)). The reply there said the check needs an error path for the caller and would be a separate change. This is that change. There is no tracker issue.

The defect, step by step (base d940fbe7b9).

  1. The vacant arm boxes RefString { impl_: null, on_before_deinit: Some(clear_ref_string) } and calls String::create_external(bytes, true, ref_, free_ref_string).
  2. For bytes.len() > String::max_length() the callee runs free_ref_string(ref_) and returns String::DEAD. That is its documented contract.
  3. free_ref_string calls RefString::destroy. It runs clear_ref_string (a ref_strings.remove while the VacantEntry still borrows the map), then frees the buffer and the box.
  4. The intern writes (*ref_).impl_ and calls v.insert(ref_).
  5. FileSystemRouter::constructor calls claim, which reads the null impl_ (src/jsc/RefString.rs, wtf_impl). That is the fault at 0x0. Under --hot the module source reads back as empty: TypeError: Expected CommonJS module to have a function wrapper.

Reach. String::max_length() is min(STRING_ALLOCATION_LIMIT, 2^31 - 1).

  • Router, default process, no test flag: origin: "\u00e9".repeat(2 ** 30). The release build of main prints Segmentation fault at address 0x0 (exit 139, 6.47 GB peak RSS). The release build of this branch throws ERR_STRING_TOO_LONG (4.1 GB peak RSS, because the 2 GiB copy no longer happens). An ASCII string cannot pass the limit, because a JS string has the same maximum.
  • The same with origin: "http://localhost/" + "é".repeat(1.1e9), each run in a child process: the release build of main ends with SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault at address 0x0). The build of this branch throws ERR_STRING_TOO_LONG and exits 0. A 70,000-character origin constructs and reads back equal on both.
  • Router assetPrefix: the same as origin. Router directory: only with the lowered limit, because a path is short.
  • --hot/--watch: printed text of a synchronously transpiled module over 2^31 - 1 bytes. import() uses the concurrent transpiler, which does not intern.

Measurements. Two release builds of one tree (71d0d43997), with and without the src/ changes, one at a time.

What Base This PR Tool

Result<NonNull<RefString>, StringTooLong> 8 B const probe, cargo check -p bun_jsc
Result<ResolvedSource, StringTooLong> ResolvedSource is 136 B 136 B same

Both reads of the limit sit after the hash probe ends with no match. The hit path jumps past them.

Tests. The children lower the limit with BUN_FEATURE_FLAG_SYNTHETIC_MEMORY_LIMIT (or setSyntheticAllocationLimitForTesting), so the boundary costs 64 KiB and not 2 GiB.

  • Router: origin and assetPrefix at 65,536 bytes construct, and at 65,537 bytes throw. A second construct with the same refused origin throws again (on the base build the map kept a dangling pointer for it). A later router still works.
  • Router: the resolved directory path under a 16-byte limit throws.
  • Router: an origin interned before the limit drops still constructs, and a new 32 MiB origin is refused with less than 8 MiB of RSS growth. A build with the length check removed (the Tag::Dead return kept) passes the other two router tests and fails this one (missCopied: true).
  • --hot and --watch: a require() of a 200 KiB module under a 64 KiB limit is caught with ERR_STRING_TOO_LONG, and the next require() works.
  • No test reaches the Tag::Dead return. The limit has to drop between the two reads, and only the test hook on another thread can do that.
  • Full files on the debug ASAN build, last run on d940fbe7b9 plus this branch: watch.test.ts 16 pass. hot.test.ts 17 pass. filesystem_router.test.ts 39 pass, and reload() while Bun.build() resolves the same directory times out with and without this change. On an earlier base the two does not take a promise of the program's tests in hot.test.ts were flaky with and without this change: in 20 interleaved runs of each build, pending failed 2 times on main and 0 times here, and rejected and handled hit its 5 s timeout 7 times on each.

Refactoring that rides along.

  • ref_strings holds NonNull<RefString>. The router's .expect("ref_counted_string") goes with it. That .expect never fired.
  • The DUPE const generic and the write-only new: &mut bool are gone. Every caller passed ::<true> and dropped the flag. With a fallible intern, DUPE = false had no owner for the bytes on the error path.
  • AsyncModule::resume_loading_module loses its --hot/--watch intern branch. The function is unreachable: ParseResult::pending_imports (src/bundler/transpiler.rs:793) has no writer, and the one enqueue (src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:2978) needs it non-empty. An error arm there would be code that no test can reach.

Not changed here.

  • String::create_external keeps its contract (free on refusal, return dead). Its other two callers handle it (src/runtime/ipc.rs, src/bundler/OutputFile.rs).
  • The intern never frees an entry (the ref_strings part of bun --hot always leaks memory #11083), and a hit compares only the 32-bit hash. Both are older than this PR.
  • The non-interned paths do not check a dead clone_latin1 (src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:3229, src/jsc/RuntimeTranspilerStore.rs).

Open PRs on the same lines. #33866, #41385, #40383, #40404, #44833.

Review follow-up. The hot test has no explicit timeout, and the three router tests run with it.concurrent (test/CLAUDE.md). The bound on memory growth for the refused origin is 16 MiB on ASAN and debug builds and 8 MiB on other builds (a copy is 32 MiB). Not taken: an error arm in AsyncModule::resume_loading_module (unreachable, see above), a length check in the router ahead of the intern (it refuses a string that is already interned, which the intern accepts), a byte compare on an intern hit (see "Not changed here"), and a router-specific error text (the text comes from the shared throw_string_too_long).

Rebase. #45173 added one line (resolved_source.is_static = self.is_static;) to the AsyncModule.rs branch that this PR deletes. The deletion stays. The return that remains in that function carries is_static: self.is_static.

Self-review. 5 concerns raised, 5 addressed: the write-up (leads with the defect, names the open PRs, no claim about a reachable .expect), the intern-hit test holds its router, a test pins the refusal ahead of the copy, four comments cut to one line and one stale doc fixed, the watch test reads its pipes from a typed local.

no test proof · iteration 0 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/js/bun/util/filesystem_router.test.ts, test/cli/watch/watch.test.ts, test/cli/hot/hot.test.ts

Status: ready for review. CI is green on 92111ee6d3 (Buildkite build 126864, 181 of 181 jobs passed), and the branch merges cleanly with main.

How it was reproduced (debug ASAN build of main, in a directory with one route file):

BUN_GARBAGE_COLLECTOR_LEVEL=0 BUN_FEATURE_FLAG_SYNTHETIC_MEMORY_LIMIT=65536 \
  bun-debug -e 'new Bun.FileSystemRouter({ dir: ".", style: "nextjs", origin: "x".repeat(70000) })'
ERROR: AddressSanitizer: heap-use-after-free
WRITE of size 8
    #0 VirtualMachine::ref_counted_string_with_was_new::<true> src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:4920
  • The release build of main prints panic(main thread): Segmentation fault at address 0x0 for the same command.
  • With no test flag, origin: "\u00e9".repeat(2 ** 30) gives the same segfault on the release build of main.
  • Under --hot or --watch, a require() of a 200 KiB module with the limit at 65536 hits the same write.

On this branch each of them throws ERR_STRING_TOO_LONG.

PR: #44991

Walkthrough

Ref-counted string interning now returns errors when strings exceed the supported length or cannot be created. Runtime call sites map these failures to JavaScript errors. New tests cover router construction and hot and watch module loading.

Changes

String interning and error handling

Interned string representation and allocation
src/jsc/RefString.rs, src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs
The interning map stores NonNull<RefString> values. String interning and resolved-source creation return StringTooLong when allocation fails or new input exceeds the maximum length.

Router construction and watcher-mode source creation propagate string-length errors. Async module loading uses the same source construction in watcher and non-watcher modes. Tests cover oversized strings and subsequent successful operations.

🟡 Minor · Propagate over-limit watcher loads through the async rejection path. · AsyncModule.rs:1211-1214

src/jsc/AsyncModule.rs:1211-1214
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Propagate over-limit watcher loads through the async rejection path.

For watcher-enabled async loads, clone_latin1 can produce a dead source when the transpiled output exceeds the string limit. The current success path then creates an empty source and resolves the module.

Restore the ref-counted source path. Map ref_string::StringTooLong explicitly because resume_loading_module returns CrateResult<ResolvedSource>, and the distinct error type does not implement the required conversion. Handle CrateError::StringTooLong in fulfill; process_fetch_log only creates a generic build message and does not produce ERR_STRING_TOO_LONG.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked two things that came up clean: the AsyncModule::resume_loading_module branch deletion (no writer pushes into ParseResult::pending_imports anywhere in src/, so that intern path was unreachable as the description says), and the new ? in transpile_source_code_inner at src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:3117 (the module_info box and the compile-cache blob are plain owned values dropped by Rust on the early return, so nothing leaks there).

Extended reasoning...

The change rewires the VM ref-string intern (src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs) to return Result and validate length before allocating, updates the two callers (filesystem router, --hot/--watch transpile), and deletes a dead intern branch in AsyncModule.rs; it touches unsafe/FFI ownership but no auth, crypto, or injection surface. Three inline findings were posted, so a human should weigh those; this note only records the two adjacent paths that were examined and found not affected.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs — pre-existing: without --hot/--watch, a module whose printed text is over the WTF string limit still loads as an empty program instead of throwing ERR_STRING_TOO_LONG, which this PR now gives only on the watcher twin at src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:3117. At src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:3197 clone_latin1(written) returns a Dead (or OutOfMemory) string when written.len() exceeds the WTF limit, and the result is stored in source_code without a check. Fix: both sync twins (and RuntimeTranspilerStore) should refuse a dead source_code the same way, e.g. if source_code.is_dead() { return Err(global_object.throw_string_too_long()) } after the clone, so the mode a user runs in does not change whether a too-long module is reported.

    Why this was flagged

A require() or import of a file whose transpiled output is at least 2^31 bytes without --hot or --watch, through transpile_source_code_inner in src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs. At src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:3197 bun_core::String::clone_latin1(written) calls BunString__fromLatin1 (src/jsc/bindings/BunString.cpp:444), whose tryCreateUninitialized fails for an invalid length and returns BunStringTag::Dead. The Dead string goes into ResolvedSource.source_code at src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:3212 unchecked; BunString::transferToWTFString() (src/jsc/bindings/BunString.cpp:818) turns it into a null WTF::String, so the module evaluates as empty (ESM) or fails with the unrelated CommonJS wrapper TypeError. The base behaves the same on this path; this PR makes the --hot/--watch twin at src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:3117 throw ERR_STRING_TOO_LONG, so after merging the outcome for the same file depends on the flag. The same unchecked clone exists in src/jsc/RuntimeTranspilerStore.rs for the async path.

Verification: The watcher branch at src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:3109-3117 now does .map_err(|_| global_object.throw_string_too_long())?, while the non-watcher branch at line 3197 does let source_code = bun_core::String::clone_latin1(written); and stores it unchecked into ResolvedSource at 3211-3219. The base at 6c1eb06 has the identical clone_latin1(written) at line 3196.

Two review notes sit outside the diff, so the answers are here.

AsyncModule::resume_loading_module (restore the intern branch with an error arm). Not changed. The function cannot run today: ParseResult::pending_imports has no writer, and the one Queue::enqueue call (src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:2967) needs it non-empty. An intern call with an error arm there is code that no test can reach, so this PR removes the branch. bun_jsc::Error also has no StringTooLong variant to map to.

Non-watcher clone_latin1 (src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:3217). Pre-existing, and named in the PR body (Downsides and Notes). It is not changed here because no test can reach it at a reasonable cost: clone_latin1 does not read the lowered test limit, so the module must print more than 2^31 - 1 bytes. A check of the dead string in the three non-interned paths is a separate change.

The explicit timeout on the new hot test is gone in 29ee576, and the three router tests now run with it.concurrent. The three inline threads have replies.

Beyond the inline notes, I also checked: the Tag::Dead branch in ref_counted_string matches String::create_external's contract (src/bun_core/string/mod.rs:328 runs the callback and returns DEAD), and with on_before_deinit: None that refusal path cannot re-enter ref_strings while the Vacant entry borrows it; the three new ? returns in FileSystemRouter::constructor leave router and arena as owned locals dropped the same way as the existing error returns at filesystem_router.rs:273 and :287; and ParseResult::pending_imports has no writer in src/ (every construction is Default::default()), so the AsyncModule.rs branch this PR deletes is unreachable today.

Extended reasoning...

The change rewrites the VM ref-string intern (src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs) to refuse over-limit input before allocating and to return a Result, and updates its two live callers (jsc_hooks.rs transpile path, filesystem_router.rs constructor) plus the RefString map type; it touches no auth, injection or data-exposure surface. It is a memory-safety fix in shared VM code with a deleted branch in AsyncModule.rs, so the inline findings and a human look on the deletion remain appropriate; the three points above were verified from the code and ruled out as additional concerns.

…ore it allocates

ref_counted_string returns Err(StringTooLong) for bytes that are not interned
yet and are longer than String::max_length(). It no longer hands a RefString
to create_external that the callee frees at once.

FileSystemRouter and the --hot/--watch transpile path throw
ERR_STRING_TOO_LONG for that error.
… to one line

The intern-hit test holds its first router, so the hit does not depend on the
map keeping an entry forever. It also checks that a refused 32 MiB origin does
not grow the process: without the length check ahead of the copy, the intern
copies the bytes before create_external refuses them.

The watch test reads its pipes from a typed local.

  • Test. The bound on memory growth for the refused origin is now 16 MiB on ASAN and debug builds and 8 MiB on other builds.
  • Checked with no test flag. new Bun.FileSystemRouter({ origin: "http://localhost/" + "é".repeat(1.1e9) }) in a child process: the release build of main ends with SIGSEGV, and the build of this branch throws ERR_STRING_TOO_LONG and exits 0.
  • Test files on this base. hot.test.ts 17 pass, watch.test.ts 16 pass, filesystem_router.test.ts 39 pass (the one failure, reload() while Bun.build() resolves the same directory, also times out on main on this machine).

The router-specific error text from the latest review is not taken. The reason is in that thread.

… and CLI (#46021)

### What does this PR do?

Hardening. This collects the open pull requests that fix a crash in Bun
into one change, and fixes about 20 more crashes that had no pull
request.

"Crash" here means a segfault, a Rust panic, an abort, a failed
assertion, memory corruption that a sanitizer reports, a native stack
overflow, or an exception that ends the process and that the program
can't catch. With this PR those cases throw a normal error, print a
normal CLI error and exit 1, or just work.

306 pull requests are included: 227 whole, and 79 cut down to the crash
fix where the rest was a refactor, a feature or a behavior change. Each
one was checked against current `main` first. 45 more turned out to be
fixed already, and 17 were duplicates. The full list is at the bottom.

#### Crashes you could hit in normal use

- **`bun build` with macros and a `.env` file crashed at random.** In a
repro with many macro modules, more than a third of the builds crashed.
Now 3,000 of 3,000 produce the right bundle. (#45960)
- **`bun run` and `bunx` aborted if a signal arrived while the child was
being spawned.** (#38926, #45965)
- **`bun build --compile ./index.js ./public/*` panicked** if an
embedded file's name wasn't valid UTF-8.
- **A truncated or corrupted compiled executable** died with SIGBUS or a
panic at startup. It now prints an error. (#31787, #38251, #41360)
- **Dev server:** several `Option::unwrap()` panics after a failed or
deleted import (#38046, #44744, #44746), a segfault when an `onLoad`
plugin throws while another bundle is queued, a request that hung and
then panicked with `bundle active`, and `server.stop()` that never
resolved after a client aborted a waiting request.
- **`Bun.serve`:** `server.fetch(url, { headers: new Headers() })`
followed by a GC segfaulted (#40888). Routes were used after free after
`server.reload()` with `tls.serverName` (#38636).
- **`text()` and `json()` on a stream of string chunks** could abort the
process, a regression in 1.4.0. (#44269)
- **`Bun.Transpiler` with `exports.eliminate` or `exports.replace`**
aborted on `export default 1` and on most re-export clauses. (#44137)
- **A decorated `declare` field in a class expression** with
`experimentalDecorators` panicked. (#38095)
- **YAML and JSON5 files with a key that isn't a string** panicked with
`--no-bundle` and in `Bun.Transpiler`. (#41827)
- **`Bun.FileSystemRouter`:** reading `.params` segfaulted when a
rejected route candidate left its parameters behind. (#39290, #39291)
- **Native addons that call `uv_async_*`, `uv_timer_*`, `uv_idle_*`,
`uv_prepare_*`, `uv_check_*`, `uv_queue_work` or `uv_cwd`** aborted with
"unsupported uv function" on Linux and macOS. They're implemented now.
(#36609, #39652, #39892)
- **`--watch` and `--hot`** panicked when the system was out of inotify
instances or file descriptors, or when the reload `exec` failed. They
print an error now. (#39629, #39975, #44837)
- **Paths longer than the path buffer** panicked in `bun install`, the
resolver, the bundler, `--compile`, `tsconfig.json` `paths` and
`baseUrl`, `package.json` `main` and `sideEffects`, `bun run --filter`,
`bun pm diff`, source maps and snapshots. They're ordinary errors now,
or they work. (#36340, #37529, #39104, #39650, #43067)
- **A Worker that creates a `ShadowRealm` and imports
`node:worker_threads` in it** segfaulted.
- **`structuredClone` or `postMessage` of an X25519 key** gave an object
that aborted the process when read. (#45624)
- **`node:stream` web adapters and `node:http2`** could end the process
with an exception that no handler could catch. (#45076, #45975)
- **Windows:** a watcher panic in a burst of file changes (#44344), a
segfault after the machine resumes from sleep (#33015), crashes in the
shell's pipe reader (#39638, #43606), and addons that import from
`node.exe` without the delay-load hook (#35618).

Most of the rest needs unusual input: strings near the 2 GiB limit,
buffers that another thread or a getter resizes or detaches in the
middle of a call, `worker.terminate()` at a bad moment, running out of
memory or file descriptors, very deep nesting, or hostile arguments to
`bun:ffi`, `node:vm` and `bun:sqlite`.

#### Behavior changes

Things that didn't crash before and behave differently now:

- `new` on native functions that aren't constructors throws a
`TypeError`, as in Node: `util.types.*`, `buffer.isAscii`, `isUtf8`,
`transcode`, `resolveObjectURL`, `bun:jsc` exports, `cc()` symbols. It
used to return the call's result. They also stop printing as `[class
hostname]`. (#34575)
- `` $`cmd` `` throws `ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE` if an environment
variable's name or value contains a NUL byte. It used to cut the value
at the NUL. (#44981)
- `cc()` functions throw a `TypeError` for arguments that used to reach
C as garbage, and `read.*(ptr, NaN)` throws. (#37989, #38057, #40773)
- As PID 1, `bun` exits with 128 + the signal number on Ctrl+C or
`docker stop`. (#38877)
- A `NODE_MODULE` addon that's already loaded by the main thread throws
`ERR_DLOPEN_FAILED` when a live Worker loads it too, as in Node.
(#39968)
- An exception from a `node:vm` context reaches `uncaughtException`
handlers. (#39992) `vm.constants.DONT_CONTEXTIFY` returns the real
global proxy. (#34623)
- `createPrivateKey` rejects an EC JWK whose private value doesn't match
its public point. (#33752)
- `@dec static {}` is a syntax error, as in TypeScript and esbuild.
(#44883)
- `clearTimeout` ignores 0 and negative ids, and timer ids no longer
wrap. (#44771)
- HEAD for a `Response` whose body is an S3-backed `Blob` reports the
length that GET sends. (#44734)
- `bun:sqlite` and `node:sqlite`: if `iterate()` left a write unfinished
on a connection that has a hook, a user function or an authorizer, the
write is finished on the connection's next call instead of during
garbage collection. If the database is gone too, it's rolled back.
- `bun test --bail` runs exit listeners and closes SQLite databases.
(#39010)
- Dev server: a request for a client script waits while a bundle is in
flight (#42733), query strings reach framework routes (#33232), and a
request gets a 500 instead of hanging when plugins fail (#36812).

#### File formats

- `.jsc` bytecode files get a 24-byte footer so they can be verified
before decoding. Files from an older Bun are ignored and the source is
parsed instead. (#39396)
- `node:vm` `cachedData` gets an 8-byte checksum. A blob from an older
Bun is rejected, which the API allows. (#32839)
- The built-in modules section of a compiled executable changes from
format 1 to 2 and carries an engine stamp. (#44907)

#### Performance

Measured in instructions per operation on release builds of this branch
and its base, with an A/A run for the noise floor (0.0 to 0.2 %).

No change: `Bun.serve`, `node:http`, WebSocket echo and publish, `bun
build` of 3,807 modules, `bun run` with 2,000 imports, `readdir` /
`Glob` / `fs.cp` over 23,689 entries, startup and RSS. The binary grows
by 176 KB (0.17 %).

| Faster | Instructions |
| --- | --- |
| WebSocket echo of a 1 MB non-ASCII text message | −72 % |
| `Bun.inspect` of a large non-ASCII string | −39 % |
| `Bun.markdown.html` on large non-ASCII input | −33 % |
| `` $`cmd` `` with 300 environment variables | −6 % |
| `fs.readSync` | −5 % |
| `TextEncoder.encodeInto`, short ASCII strings | −4 % |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, 16-byte inputs | −17 % |

| Slower | Instructions | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `cc()` calls | +5 to +51 per call | Argument count and type checks,
and a check for `close()` (#37989, #38057, #43802, #44921). `dlopen()`
calls don't change |
| `process.env.X = v` | 38 → 593 per write | Writes aren't cached. Reads
don't change (#38871) |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, inputs of 1 KB or more | +4 to +9 % | Password
and salt are copied (#40554) |
| `bun build` with an object `--define` used thousands of times | +4.5 %
| The object is copied per use (#45969) |

#### Not included

- Fixes that need a WebKit change: #39967, #42534, #42982, #43764,
#43786, #44226. #42185 too: a typed array that has no `ArrayBuffer` yet
can't be pinned, so `view.buffer.transfer()` during an async call can
still free its bytes. Creating the `ArrayBuffer` up front costs 7 to 12
% on every async `fs` call, so the fix belongs in JSC: an `ArrayBuffer`
created while the view is borrowed should start out pinned.
- #45442 (`calc()` sums as a flat list): it changes minified output for
real stylesheets to survive a `calc()` with 25,000 terms. It deserves
its own review.
- #40023 (Windows event loop redesign), #29928 (Windows exit path),
#40534, #43963, #39571, #42904, #42834, #36355, #43266: refactors or
features whose crash is already covered or isn't a crash.
- The pull requests marked *(crash fix only)* below should stay open for
their other half.

### How did you verify your code works?

- **Tests.** Every fix has a test that fails on `main` (a release or an
ASAN build) and passes on this branch, except where that isn't
practical: code that only runs on Windows or macOS, inputs that need
several GB of memory, and a few rare races. Those were checked by hand
or by reading.
- **Stored repro scripts.** 230 crash repros ran on release and ASAN
builds of this branch and of `main`, side by side. Release: 88 no longer
crash. ASAN: 106 no longer crash. None crashes that didn't before. What
still crashes needs WebKit, is SQLite's own bug, or isn't a crash. The
ASAN number is from a later commit than the release number.
- **Dev server.** Because one fix makes requests wait, 2,171 generated
programs ran random interleavings of edits, build errors, failing
plugins, reloads, stops and disconnects with about 120,000 requests. No
request hung, was answered twice or got a stale body. `main` hung in 82
of 1,161 programs. This also found the four dev server bugs listed
above.
- **Path helpers.** 336,000 boundary cases with buffers of exactly the
computed size, and 12,003 random calls through 30 JS APIs on an ASAN
build, compared with `main`. No sanitizer report, and the results match
wherever `main` doesn't panic.
- **What worked on 1.4.3 still works.** Reviewers compared behavior with
1.4.3 and took out what changed it: for example an output directory
layout change for 9 or more entry points, a `server.reload()` change,
and a changed error message for `import("file:///50%deposit.ts")`.
- **Not run locally:** the Windows, macOS and FreeBSD code paths. CI
compiles and tests them.
