Problem

  • On a Windows debug build, import("C:\\\\\\doesnotexist.ts") (a drive letter followed by three separators) from any file crashes instead of rejecting:
panic: Internal Assertion Failure: Invalid cache key "C:\\"
    See Resolver.assertValidCacheKey for details.
    Crashed while resolving a module

  • After a failed resolution, VirtualMachine.rs (~4441) and jsc_hooks.rs (~5248) bust the directory cache for the specifier's dirname. dirname of C:\\\x is C:\\ (src/paths/Path.rs dirname_windows keeps the root's own separator plus the one it stopped on), and without_trailing_slash_windows_path (src/paths/string_paths.rs), which every cache key site uses to get the canonical spelling, handed it back unchanged: it floored the strip at windows_filesystem_root(input).len() + 1, i.e. at 4 bytes for a C:\-rooted path, so C:\\ and C:// survived and C:\\\\ only shrank to C:\\. The drive root C:\ is the one key that is allowed to end in a separator; a second spelling of it fails Resolver::assert_valid_cache_key (src/resolver/resolver.rs ~2430).
  • Observable only in builds with assertions (debug, and the ASAN builds CI tests with). Release builds are not affected: both caches are BSSMapInner<_, 2048, true> (src/resolver/dir_info.rs, src/resolver/lib.rs) whose key_hash (src/bun_alloc/lib.rs) trims trailing native separators before hashing, so C:\\ and C:\ already reach the same entry there.
  • The + 1 dates from Fix module resolution cache keys #14901, which replaced a while (len > 3) loop (a floor of 3 bytes, the root's length) with the root-relative form. resolver: strip the trailing slash before busting the dir cache for a specifier #39211 makes raw import specifiers reach this helper directly (import "C://" under bun build --watch and the dev server) and names this fix as its prerequisite; that is how it was found.

Fix

  • Floor the strip at windows_filesystem_root(input).len(). The root is exactly the prefix that has to survive (C:\, or C: for a drive-relative C:foo), so its length is the floor.
  • This changes the result for exactly one shape, drive root plus extra separators. By root length R: R == 3 (X: + separator) differs only when byte 3 is another separator, which is the bug; R == 2 means byte 2 is not a separator by definition; R <= 1 means the byte after the root is the : at index 1; UNC and device roots never enter this arm because it requires input[1] == ':'. C:\\foo\ still becomes C:\\foo, since only trailing separators are stripped.
  • The drive-letter arm moves into without_trailing_slash_windows, which applies the Windows rules on any host; without_trailing_slash_windows_path keeps its 20 callers and its host dispatch (cfg!(unix) still returns without_trailing_slash), so non-Windows behavior is unchanged. The split is what lets the arm be tested anywhere other than a Windows debug build.
  • Tests:
    • src/paths/string_paths.rs: three tables over without_trailing_slash_windows (drive roots, paths below a drive, paths without a drive letter). bun_paths is in the Miri crate set (scripts/rust-miri.ts), so they run in CI; with the + 1 put back, without_trailing_slash_windows_keeps_exactly_the_drive_root fails on C:\\ and the other two tables still pass, which pins that nothing else changes. All 21 crate tests pass with the fix, under cargo test and cargo miri test.
    • test/js/bun/resolve/resolve.test.ts, "directory cache key computation at the drive root" (Windows only, next to the existing cache key test from Fix module resolution cache keys #14901): the import() shapes above through the real caller. On a Windows x64 debug build of this branch with the + 1 put back it dies with the panic quoted above; with the fix both cache key tests pass. It discriminates only where the assertion is compiled in; release lanes pass it either way.
    • test/internal/string-paths.test.ts: the same 26 rows through a bun:internal-for-testing binding of without_trailing_slash_windows (pathsInternals, same shape as stringsInternals.toUTF16AllocSentinel: one host_fn in resolve_path_jsc.rs, one rustIdentifierPaths entry, one dispatch_js2native.rs re-export). This is the only test that checks the arm's output from bun test on every host, including the Windows lanes, where cargo test -p bun_paths does not currently link (build: make cargo test link on Windows hosts via /FORCE:UNRESOLVED in the generated .cargo/config.toml #37575). With the binding present but the + 1 put back, exactly the four root-plus-extra-separator rows fail and the other 22 pass; all 26 pass with the fix on Linux and Windows debug builds. The cargo tables do not depend on it, so it can be dropped if the binding is not wanted; the fix and its coverage stand without it.
  • Also run: test/js/bun/resolve/resolve.test.ts and test/js/bun/util/toUTF16Alloc.test.ts on Linux, test/internal/source-lints, cargo fmt, cargo clippy -p bun_paths -p bun_jsc, oxlint, prettier.
  • node:fs: strip trailing separators from Windows path arguments #38053 adds a sibling helper a few lines below this one in the same file (with the .len() floor); whichever lands second needs a trivial rebase.

Background

  • Directory cache keys: the resolver caches one DirInfo and one directory listing per directory, keyed by the directory's absolute path. Resolver::assert_valid_cache_key documents the one spelling a key may have: no trailing separator, except that a drive root keeps its single separator (C:\), because C: on its own means "the current directory of drive C", not its root. Every site that reads, writes or busts these caches runs its path through without_trailing_slash_windows_path first; the assertion is the check that they all produced that spelling.
  • windows_filesystem_root (src/paths/resolve_path.rs) returns the root prefix of a Windows path: C:\ for a drive-rooted path, C: for a drive-relative one, \\server\share\ for UNC.
  • Cache busting after a failed resolution: when an import does not resolve, the runtime drops the cached listing of the directory the import would have been found in and retries once, so a file created after the directory was first listed is still found. That bust is the caller that reaches this helper with the un-normalized dirname.
  • bun:internal-for-testing is the module bun's own tests use to reach internal functions; $newRustFunction(file, symbol, argc) in src/js/internal-for-testing.ts binds a Rust host_fn, and for crates outside bun_runtime the generated thunk reaches it through the re-export table in src/runtime/dispatch_js2native.rs.

no test proof · iteration 0 · Platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine. Deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/js/bun/resolve/resolve.test.ts

…slash_windows_path

The drive-letter arm stopped stripping one byte past windows_filesystem_root,
so "C:\\" and "C://" were returned unchanged instead of becoming the
three-byte root. Floor the strip at the root itself, move the arm into a
host-independent without_trailing_slash_windows so it can be tested on every
platform, and pin it with a cargo table and a bun:internal-for-testing
binding.

Status

Reproduced on a Windows x64 debug build: import("C:\\\\\\doesnotexist.ts") from a file dies with Internal Assertion Failure: Invalid cache key "C:\\" (the not-found retry busts the dirname C:\\, which the helper handed back unchanged). The new "directory cache key computation at the drive root" test in test/js/bun/resolve/resolve.test.ts crashes the same way on that build with the + 1 in place and passes with the fix; the cargo test -p bun_paths table and the test/internal/string-paths.test.ts table also fail only their root-plus-extra-separator rows without the fix. Only builds with assertions observe the bug; both caches trim trailing separators when hashing, so release builds were keying the same entry either way (the description was corrected on this point after review).

Fix and tests are in this PR (#39228). Related but separate: #39211 (resolver side, which names this as a prerequisite) and #38053 (a sibling helper in the same file); neither touches this line.

Walkthrough

The PR adds Windows-aware trailing separator normalization. It preserves drive-root separators, trims excess trailing separators, exposes the helper through bun:internal-for-testing, and adds Rust and JavaScript tests.

Changes

Windows path normalization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Path normalization behavior
src/paths/string_paths.rs
The Rust helper applies Windows drive-root rules and retains generic trimming for non-drive paths. Rust tests cover drive, UNC, POSIX-like, drive-relative, and empty paths.
Native testing bridge
src/jsc/resolve_path_jsc.rs, src/runtime/dispatch_js2native.rs, src/codegen/generate-js2native.ts
The JSC host function validates string input, calls the Rust helper, converts the result to JavaScript, and registers the JS-to-native dispatch mapping.
JavaScript testing API coverage
src/js/internal-for-testing.ts, test/internal/string-paths.test.ts
pathsInternals.withoutTrailingSlashWindows exposes the helper. JavaScript tests verify drive roots, repeated separators, UNC paths, non-drive paths, and empty input.

LGTM — one-byte off-by-one fix (root_len no longer protects the byte after the drive root), with the Windows-only arm split out so it can be tested on every host.

What was reviewed:

  • Traced the new floor against windows_filesystem_root_t: C:\\\\ now strips to C:\\, C:\\ stays C:\\, C:foo\\ still strips to C:foo (root len 2), and non-drive-letter X[1]==':' inputs behave the same as before.
  • Confirmed the cfg!(unix) split preserves without_trailing_slash_windows_path's existing behavior for all callers; only the new _windows function is host-agnostic.
  • Checked the js2native plumbing (rustIdentifierPaths entry, dispatch re-export name mangling, host_fn + BunString::clone_utf8/to_js/deref pattern) against the sibling toUTF16AllocSentinel binding.
  • Verified the pre-existing debug_assert can't fire on non-Windows hosts via the new binding: drive-arm results start with X:, so unix is_absolute short-circuits it.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

This PR fixes an off-by-one in without_trailing_slash_windows_path (src/paths/string_paths.rs), the resolver's directory-cache-key normalizer. The old code floored the trailing-separator strip at windows_filesystem_root(input).len() + 1, which for a C:\\-rooted path is 4, so C:\\\\ (root plus one extra separator) came back unchanged — a second spelling of the root that Resolver::assert_valid_cache_key rejects. The fix drops the + 1. The Windows arm is factored into a new host-agnostic without_trailing_slash_windows so it can be exercised on every platform, and that function is exposed through bun:internal-for-testing via the standard $newRustFunction → rustIdentifierPaths → dispatch_js2native re-export path. Tests are added both as cargo test -p bun_paths unit tests and as a bun-level table test.

Security risks

None. This is a pure string-slicing helper on already-validated paths; it takes a &[u8] and returns a subslice. No allocation, no syscalls, no user-controllable resource sizing. The test-only JSC binding validates its argument is a string and uses the established BunString refcount pattern.

Level of scrutiny

Low-to-medium. The production change is a one-character removal whose correctness I verified by reading windows_filesystem_root_t (returns &path[0..3] for X:\\, &path[0..2] for X:foo, empty for non-drive-letter X:...) and stepping the loop for each root-length case; the PR description's case analysis holds. The refactor is a mechanical split that preserves the public function's dispatch (cfg!(unix) → without_trailing_slash, else the drive-letter logic). The rest is test scaffolding that mirrors the existing stringsInternals.toUTF16AllocSentinel binding line-for-line.

Other factors

The tests are thorough (26 rows covering drive roots with/without extra separators, paths below a drive, drive-relative, UNC, rootless, empty) and the author verified they fail on the unfixed build and pass with the fix. I checked that the pre-existing debug_assert at the end of the drive-letter arm cannot fire on non-Windows hosts through the new test binding (all drive-arm outputs start with X:, so unix is_absolute is false and the assert short-circuits). The dispatch re-export name paths_string_paths_testing_ap_is_without_trailing_slash_windows matches what generate-js2native.ts's rustTarget/snake would emit for $newRustFunction("string_paths.rs", "TestingAPIs.withoutTrailingSlashWindows", 1).

… test header

Adds the end-to-end shape next to the existing Windows cache key test: the
dirname of "C:\\\x" is "C:\\", which the not-found retry busts, so a debug
build used to die on the cache key assertion instead of rejecting the import.
The string-paths header no longer claims a release-mode effect; both caches
trim trailing separators when hashing, so only the assertion observes the
wrong spelling.

LGTM — one-character floor fix (+ 1 → nothing) with a clear case analysis and three layers of tests.

What was reviewed:

  • Verified the floor change against windows_filesystem_root_t: only drive-root-plus-extra-separator inputs change (C:\\\\ → C:\\); C:\\foo\\, drive-relative C:foo\\, and non-drive-letter inputs are unaffected because the strip loop stops at the first non-separator regardless of floor.
  • The _path/_windows split preserves the cfg!(unix) early return, so all ~20 existing callers see identical behavior on non-Windows hosts.
  • The bun:internal-for-testing binding follows the stringsInternals.toUTF16AllocSentinel pattern exactly (rustIdentifierPaths entry, dispatch re-export, host_fn in a testing_apis module); BunString::clone_utf8 + deref() lifecycle matches to_js conventions.
  • The comment-cop bot findings on multi-line doc comments were addressed in 37a86a2/b713085a; the CodeRabbit thread on testing the is_string() guard was resolved as intentional.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

This PR fixes a debug/ASAN-only assertion failure on Windows: import("C:\\\\\\x") panicked with Invalid cache key "C:\\\\" instead of rejecting. The root cause is that without_trailing_slash_windows_path floored its trailing-separator strip at windows_filesystem_root(input).len() + 1 (4 bytes for a C:\\-rooted path), so C:\\\\ came back unchanged and violated Resolver::assert_valid_cache_key. The fix drops the + 1.

The change touches seven files: the one-line fix in src/paths/string_paths.rs plus a refactor splitting the drive-letter arm into a separately-callable without_trailing_slash_windows (so it can be tested on any host); three Rust unit-test tables (26 cases); a bun:internal-for-testing binding wired through generate-js2native.ts, resolve_path_jsc.rs, dispatch_js2native.rs, and internal-for-testing.ts; a JS test file mirroring the 26 cases through the binding; and a Windows-only integration test in resolve.test.ts that exercises the real import() → cache-bust path.

Security risks

None. This is a path-normalization helper for the resolver's directory-cache key. The change makes normalization stricter (strips more separators), not laxer, and only for one input shape on Windows. No auth, crypto, or permission code involved. The test binding is gated behind bun:internal-for-testing.

Level of scrutiny

Low-to-medium. The core fix is a single character with a case analysis in the PR description that I verified against windows_filesystem_root_t in resolve_path.rs:833-881: root length 3 (C:\\) is the only case where byte 3 can be a separator (the bug); root length 2 means byte 2 is not a separator by definition of windows_filesystem_root; root length ≤1 means byte 1 is : (not a separator, since this arm requires input[1] == b':'). UNC/device paths never enter this arm. The cfg!(unix) early return is preserved verbatim in without_trailing_slash_windows_path, so non-Windows callers are provably unaffected.

The test-binding plumbing is boilerplate that copies the existing stringsInternals.toUTF16AllocSentinel shape line-for-line. I checked to_js/deref in bun_string_jsc.rs and the lifecycle is correct (clone → to_js → deref, no leak on either path).

Other factors

  • The PR description states the author confirmed each test discriminates: with + 1 restored, exactly the four root-plus-separator rows fail and the other 22 pass, in both cargo test and the JS binding suite.
  • The new resolve.test.ts case correctly awaits expect(...).rejects.toThrow() (unlike the neighboring test from #14901, which does not — but that is pre-existing).
  • All bot feedback (comment-cop on multi-line doc comments, CodeRabbit on the is_string() guard) was addressed by the author in follow-up commits and the current diff reflects one-line docs throughout.
  • Release builds were never affected (the cache's key_hash already trims trailing separators before hashing), so this only fixes a debug-assertion crash — low blast radius.

### What does this PR do?

Hardening. This collects the open pull requests that fix a crash in Bun
into one change, and fixes about 20 more crashes that had no pull
request.

"Crash" here means a segfault, a Rust panic, an abort, a failed
assertion, memory corruption that a sanitizer reports, a native stack
overflow, or an exception that ends the process and that the program
can't catch. With this PR those cases throw a normal error, print a
normal CLI error and exit 1, or just work.

306 pull requests are included: 227 whole, and 79 cut down to the crash
fix where the rest was a refactor, a feature or a behavior change. Each
one was checked against current `main` first. 45 more turned out to be
fixed already, and 17 were duplicates. The full list is at the bottom.

#### Crashes you could hit in normal use

- **`bun build` with macros and a `.env` file crashed at random.** In a
repro with many macro modules, more than a third of the builds crashed.
Now 3,000 of 3,000 produce the right bundle. (#45960)
- **`bun run` and `bunx` aborted if a signal arrived while the child was
being spawned.** (#38926, #45965)
- **`bun build --compile ./index.js ./public/*` panicked** if an
embedded file's name wasn't valid UTF-8.
- **A truncated or corrupted compiled executable** died with SIGBUS or a
panic at startup. It now prints an error. (#31787, #38251, #41360)
- **Dev server:** several `Option::unwrap()` panics after a failed or
deleted import (#38046, #44744, #44746), a segfault when an `onLoad`
plugin throws while another bundle is queued, a request that hung and
then panicked with `bundle active`, and `server.stop()` that never
resolved after a client aborted a waiting request.
- **`Bun.serve`:** `server.fetch(url, { headers: new Headers() })`
followed by a GC segfaulted (#40888). Routes were used after free after
`server.reload()` with `tls.serverName` (#38636).
- **`text()` and `json()` on a stream of string chunks** could abort the
process, a regression in 1.4.0. (#44269)
- **`Bun.Transpiler` with `exports.eliminate` or `exports.replace`**
aborted on `export default 1` and on most re-export clauses. (#44137)
- **A decorated `declare` field in a class expression** with
`experimentalDecorators` panicked. (#38095)
- **YAML and JSON5 files with a key that isn't a string** panicked with
`--no-bundle` and in `Bun.Transpiler`. (#41827)
- **`Bun.FileSystemRouter`:** reading `.params` segfaulted when a
rejected route candidate left its parameters behind. (#39290, #39291)
- **Native addons that call `uv_async_*`, `uv_timer_*`, `uv_idle_*`,
`uv_prepare_*`, `uv_check_*`, `uv_queue_work` or `uv_cwd`** aborted with
"unsupported uv function" on Linux and macOS. They're implemented now.
(#36609, #39652, #39892)
- **`--watch` and `--hot`** panicked when the system was out of inotify
instances or file descriptors, or when the reload `exec` failed. They
print an error now. (#39629, #39975, #44837)
- **Paths longer than the path buffer** panicked in `bun install`, the
resolver, the bundler, `--compile`, `tsconfig.json` `paths` and
`baseUrl`, `package.json` `main` and `sideEffects`, `bun run --filter`,
`bun pm diff`, source maps and snapshots. They're ordinary errors now,
or they work. (#36340, #37529, #39104, #39650, #43067)
- **A Worker that creates a `ShadowRealm` and imports
`node:worker_threads` in it** segfaulted.
- **`structuredClone` or `postMessage` of an X25519 key** gave an object
that aborted the process when read. (#45624)
- **`node:stream` web adapters and `node:http2`** could end the process
with an exception that no handler could catch. (#45076, #45975)
- **Windows:** a watcher panic in a burst of file changes (#44344), a
segfault after the machine resumes from sleep (#33015), crashes in the
shell's pipe reader (#39638, #43606), and addons that import from
`node.exe` without the delay-load hook (#35618).

Most of the rest needs unusual input: strings near the 2 GiB limit,
buffers that another thread or a getter resizes or detaches in the
middle of a call, `worker.terminate()` at a bad moment, running out of
memory or file descriptors, very deep nesting, or hostile arguments to
`bun:ffi`, `node:vm` and `bun:sqlite`.

#### Behavior changes

Things that didn't crash before and behave differently now:

- `new` on native functions that aren't constructors throws a
`TypeError`, as in Node: `util.types.*`, `buffer.isAscii`, `isUtf8`,
`transcode`, `resolveObjectURL`, `bun:jsc` exports, `cc()` symbols. It
used to return the call's result. They also stop printing as `[class
hostname]`. (#34575)
- `` $`cmd` `` throws `ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE` if an environment
variable's name or value contains a NUL byte. It used to cut the value
at the NUL. (#44981)
- `cc()` functions throw a `TypeError` for arguments that used to reach
C as garbage, and `read.*(ptr, NaN)` throws. (#37989, #38057, #40773)
- As PID 1, `bun` exits with 128 + the signal number on Ctrl+C or
`docker stop`. (#38877)
- A `NODE_MODULE` addon that's already loaded by the main thread throws
`ERR_DLOPEN_FAILED` when a live Worker loads it too, as in Node.
(#39968)
- An exception from a `node:vm` context reaches `uncaughtException`
handlers. (#39992) `vm.constants.DONT_CONTEXTIFY` returns the real
global proxy. (#34623)
- `createPrivateKey` rejects an EC JWK whose private value doesn't match
its public point. (#33752)
- `@dec static {}` is a syntax error, as in TypeScript and esbuild.
(#44883)
- `clearTimeout` ignores 0 and negative ids, and timer ids no longer
wrap. (#44771)
- HEAD for a `Response` whose body is an S3-backed `Blob` reports the
length that GET sends. (#44734)
- `bun:sqlite` and `node:sqlite`: if `iterate()` left a write unfinished
on a connection that has a hook, a user function or an authorizer, the
write is finished on the connection's next call instead of during
garbage collection. If the database is gone too, it's rolled back.
- `bun test --bail` runs exit listeners and closes SQLite databases.
(#39010)
- Dev server: a request for a client script waits while a bundle is in
flight (#42733), query strings reach framework routes (#33232), and a
request gets a 500 instead of hanging when plugins fail (#36812).

#### File formats

- `.jsc` bytecode files get a 24-byte footer so they can be verified
before decoding. Files from an older Bun are ignored and the source is
parsed instead. (#39396)
- `node:vm` `cachedData` gets an 8-byte checksum. A blob from an older
Bun is rejected, which the API allows. (#32839)
- The built-in modules section of a compiled executable changes from
format 1 to 2 and carries an engine stamp. (#44907)

#### Performance

Measured in instructions per operation on release builds of this branch
and its base, with an A/A run for the noise floor (0.0 to 0.2 %).

No change: `Bun.serve`, `node:http`, WebSocket echo and publish, `bun

#### Not included

- Fixes that need a WebKit change: #39967, #42534, #42982, #43764,
#43786, #44226. #42185 too: a typed array that has no `ArrayBuffer` yet
can't be pinned, so `view.buffer.transfer()` during an async call can
still free its bytes. Creating the `ArrayBuffer` up front costs 7 to 12
% on every async `fs` call, so the fix belongs in JSC: an `ArrayBuffer`
created while the view is borrowed should start out pinned.
- #45442 (`calc()` sums as a flat list): it changes minified output for
real stylesheets to survive a `calc()` with 25,000 terms. It deserves
its own review.
- #40023 (Windows event loop redesign), #29928 (Windows exit path),
#40534, #43963, #39571, #42904, #42834, #36355, #43266: refactors or
features whose crash is already covered or isn't a crash.
- The pull requests marked *(crash fix only)* below should stay open for
their other half.

### How did you verify your code works?

- **Tests.** Every fix has a test that fails on `main` (a release or an
ASAN build) and passes on this branch, except where that isn't
practical: code that only runs on Windows or macOS, inputs that need
several GB of memory, and a few rare races. Those were checked by hand
or by reading.
- **Stored repro scripts.** 230 crash repros ran on release and ASAN
builds of this branch and of `main`, side by side. Release: 88 no longer
crash. ASAN: 106 no longer crash. None crashes that didn't before. What
still crashes needs WebKit, is SQLite's own bug, or isn't a crash. The
ASAN number is from a later commit than the release number.
- **Dev server.** Because one fix makes requests wait, 2,171 generated
programs ran random interleavings of edits, build errors, failing
plugins, reloads, stops and disconnects with about 120,000 requests. No
request hung, was answered twice or got a stale body. `main` hung in 82
of 1,161 programs. This also found the four dev server bugs listed
above.
- **Path helpers.** 336,000 boundary cases with buffers of exactly the
computed size, and 12,003 random calls through 30 JS APIs on an ASAN
build, compared with `main`. No sanitizer report, and the results match
wherever `main` doesn't panic.
- **What worked on 1.4.3 still works.** Reviewers compared behavior with
1.4.3 and took out what changed it: for example an output directory
layout change for 9 or more entry points, a `server.reload()` change,
and a changed error message for `import("file:///50%deposit.ts")`.
- **Not run locally:** the Windows, macOS and FreeBSD code paths. CI
compiles and tests them.
