Problem

  • bun build --compile --bytecode --format=esm --banner 'console.log(import.meta.url);' builds an executable that dies with panic(main thread): Segmentation fault at address 0x0. A banner await or import fails too, as does --footer.
  • JSC does not parse such a chunk at startup: its module record comes from what the printer printed. The banner and footer are raw text added later (src/bundler/linker_context/postProcessJSChunk.rs:466, :768).

Fix

  • The linker parses the banner and the footer, each alone, and adds their flags (import.meta, top-level await) to the printer's record.
  • If a piece has an import or export, or does not parse alone, JSC's build-time analysis of each server chunk's final text gives the record.
  • Other builds embed the same bytes.
  • Verified: test/bundler/bundler_compile_prelinked.test.ts (40 new tests, 16 fail on main). Also bundler_compile, bundler_compile_splitting, bun-build-compile. Self-reviewed: 13 concerns raised, 12 addressed, 1 asked in Notes.

Background

  • A module record lists a module's requests, imports, exports and two flags.
  • ModuleAnalyzer is what JSC runs at load for a module with no record. It needs a global object, so the bundler's bytecode VM now makes one.
  • Weighed: no record for such chunks (startup parses them again). JSC's analysis for every build (+3.6% build instructions).

Downsides

Notes

The build-time parseRootNode and ModuleAnalyzer step on a scratch global comes from the bun-build-esm branch (see the commit's co-author). Other suites run with the release build of this PR: bundler_compile, bundler_compile_splitting, bun-build-compile, bundler_banner, bundler_footer, bundler_splitting, bun-build-api. bundler_compile_prelinked also passes on the debug ASAN build (119 tests).

Question for a maintainer. js_printer was the only producer of module records (#37677). This PR adds a second one, JSC's analysis, that runs only when the banner or footer has an import or export or does not parse alone. Three shapes are possible:

  • Flags only (about 100 lines, no C++): the first Fix bullet alone. It fixes the reported crash and the lost await. A banner import or export stays wrong.
  • This PR (about 540 source lines, 370 of them the second producer and its bridge).
  • JSC's analysis for every ESM bytecode build: delete raw_text_module_syntax and the flags arm, run the same pre-pass always. One producer for bundler chunks, and it also fixes bundler: record the ESM module record's TLA flag from the awaits the printer emits #37770's repro (below). It costs +3.6% build instructions on every such build until one parse can give both the record and the bytecode.

A fourth variant keeps the printer's record for printed text and appends JSC's records of the two pieces. It needs no whole-chunk analysis, but it cannot read a pair that only parses around the chunk (try { and } finally {}), or an export { x } of a name the other piece declares.

Origin and reach. One report from a maintainer in chat, no issue. The path needs --compile, --bytecode, an explicit --format=esm and banner or footer text with module syntax. A chunk that has its own import.meta or await hides the flag half of the bug. The behavior has been wrong since #26402.

Same invariant, not changed here.

Measurements (Linux x64, release builds with LTO, main 017b243 against this PR). perf, /usr/bin/time, bloaty and valgrind are not installed in the build container. Instruction counts come from perf_event_open (PERF_COUNT_HW_INSTRUCTIONS, user mode, inherited), the counter behind perf stat -e instructions:u. Max RSS comes from getrusage(RUSAGE_CHILDREN).

  • parse_only calls per build: no banner 0, comment banner 1, import.meta banner 1 (gdb hit count on the debug binary, one call per non-empty piece).
  • JSC analysis calls: no banner 0, comment banner 0, import.meta banner 0, export {}; banner 1 per JS chunk (3 for a 3-chunk split build). Scratch globals: 1 per bundler thread, 0 when no analysis runs (gdb hit counts on Bun__analyzeModuleSourceForBytecodeCache and JSC::JSGlobalObject::init).
  • Payload bytes differing (objcopy --dump-section .bun, cmp, main against PR): no banner 0, comment banner and footer 0, split build 0, split build with a license comment 0, "use client"; banner 0.
  • No-banner build of bench/split-require (400 tools, --compile --splitting --format=esm --minify --bytecode, 10 runs each): PR minus main -1,135,528 instructions (-0.0071%) of 15,996,853,123. Main against itself: +576,766 (+0.0036%). Spread between runs: 7 to 15 million.
  • Same banner on main and on the PR, 5 runs each: import.meta.url; +432,232 instructions (+0.003%), max RSS +0.6 MB. export {}; +574,690,331 instructions (+3.59%), max RSS +3.8 MB (290.7 MB to 294.6 MB). With 1,600 tools (1,602 chunks, about 15 MB of chunk text): +3.56% instructions, max RSS +9.6 MB of 830 MB (spread between runs about 7 MB).
  • Startup of executables built by the PR, 7-module split fixture: 0 chunks analyzed at startup, fetch 5, resolve 9, 6 cache hits, for no banner and for banners with import.meta, await, an import, and a footer export. The same build without --bytecode: 6 chunks analyzed, fetch 13, resolve 23.
  • Existing ESM bytecode fixtures on the JSC record: the 21 +splitting cases of bundler_compile_prelinked.test.ts now also run with --banner "export {};" in the three loader modes (+splitting+banner), all pass. Before the tests were final, every ESM bytecode fixture of bundler_compile, bundler_compile_prelinked and bundler_compile_splitting was run once with a forced module-syntax banner on a debug build: all passed.
  • Release binary: +19,200 bytes text, +20,480 bytes on disk (size, because bloaty is not installed).

What callers who never use such a banner pay. A build that is not --compile --bytecode --format=esm: one empty Vec and one bounds check per chunk in the in-memory output loop. An ESM bytecode build with no banner or footer: two length checks more. With a banner or footer: one parse of each piece per build. Every parse: one Option check per import declaration (process_import_statement). No code that runs at startup of an executable changed.

Tests. All new tests are in bundler_compile_prelinked.test.ts, which CI's ASAN lane runs with the exception-check and leak validators (bundler_compile.test.ts is excluded from both). compile/prelinked/BannerFooter/*: 14 Bun.build cases (flags, imports, exports in every chunk including a JSON chunk, Latin-1 and UTF-16 names, re-exports, an anonymous default export, an export that spans banner and footer, pairs around the chunk, a TypeScript re-export), each run in the three loader modes and once more to assert that no chunk's record is made at startup. 5 command-line cases: the reported repro, typed and deferred imports of files on disk, which builds run JSC's analysis (0 for inert and flags-only text, one per server chunk otherwise, none for the browser chunk of an HTML import), a chunk JSC cannot parse inside a graph, and --bytecode-order. 16 of these 19 fail on main. NonAsciiNames, ReExports, ReExports+minify and the 21 +splitting+banner replays pass on main: they run programs main already handles through the new producer.

no test proof · iteration 0 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/bundler/bundler_compile_prelinked.test.ts

…gs from a parse, entries from JSC)

With `bun build --compile --bytecode --format=esm`, JavaScriptCore does not
parse a chunk at startup. The module record of the chunk comes from what the
printer prints. The printer never prints `--banner` and `--footer` text, so
`import.meta`, a top-level `await`, an `import` or an `export` in that text was
missing from the record. The executable then crashed with
`Segmentation fault at address 0x0`, exited before its awaits settled, or ran
with the imports unbound.

The linker now parses the banner and the footer, each on its own.
`import.meta` and a top-level `await` are two flags, which it adds to the
record the printer made. If a piece has an `import` or `export` declaration, or
does not parse on its own, the record of each chunk is built from
JavaScriptCore's own analysis of the final text of the chunk (`parseRootNode`
and `ModuleAnalyzer` on the bytecode VM) while the build runs. A build with no
banner, or with a banner that is a comment or a directive, embeds the same
bytes as before.

Status

Reproduced on main (017b243, release build, Linux x64):

echo 'console.log("app ok");' > app.mjs
bun build --compile --bytecode --format=esm --banner 'console.log(import.meta.url);' ./app.mjs --outfile app
./app

Main: panic(main thread): Segmentation fault at address 0x0, exit code 139. With --footer the executable prints app ok and then crashes. A banner await makes it print nothing. A banner import { sep } from "node:path" gives ReferenceError: sep is not defined.

This branch: the executable prints file:///$bunfs/root/app and app ok, exit code 0.

Walkthrough

The change adds parser support for identifying module syntax in raw banner and footer text and builds module records from JavaScriptCore analysis. The bundler uses these results during chunk generation and reuses generated code. Tests cover compiled prelinked builds, banners, footers, loader modes, and bytecode ordering.

The description explains the problem, implementation, verification, trade-offs, limitations, and test coverage. Although it does not use the exact template headings, it provides the required information in the Problem, Fix, Measurements, and Tests sections.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #37770 remains unmet. The PR adds banner and footer parsing and conditional JavaScriptCore analysis, but the PR description states that linker-emitted top-level await remains lost when no banner or footer is present. The change does not establish that the printer is the single producer of the TLA flag, remove the other flag paths, update the debug cross-check or cache version, or add the issue's requested coverage for dead awaits, function-local awaits, splitting, and --isolate.

Resolution

Implement the remaining #37770 requirements in this pull request, including printer-derived TLA flags for all emitted module-scope awaits, removal of obsolete flag producers, debug cross-check and cache-version updates, and the requested tests. Otherwise, unlink #37770 and link this work to an issue for the banner/footer module-record fix.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, two other concerns were examined and ruled out: the new Bun__analyzeModuleSourceForBytecodeCache in src/jsc/bindings/BunAnalyzeTranspiledModule.cpp runs ModuleAnalyzer::analyze on a scratch global with no user code reachable and asserts no exception under a top-level scope, with parse failures returned through ParserError rather than a pending exception; and the JSC-analysis arm in src/bundler/linker_context/generateChunksInParallel.rs skipping browser chunks of a server build leaves those chunks on the printer's record, which is consistent with them being emitted as files rather than loaded as bytecode modules. This is a large change (about 1,000 lines across the parser, printer, linker and JSC bindings) that adds a second producer of ESM module records, so a human look at the design question the author raises is still worthwhile.

Extended reasoning...

The change adds a parse-only pass over --banner/--footer text and a JSC ModuleAnalyzer bridge (new extern "C" callbacks in src/jsc/CachedBytecode.rs and BunAnalyzeTranspiledModule.cpp) so that bytecode ESM chunks embed a module record that includes banner/footer syntax; it also refactors chunk code generation into chunk_code/public_path_of helpers and adds about 500 lines of tests. It touches no auth, crypto or injection surface, but it does touch the bytecode/module-record format that compiled executables load at startup. Deferral is driven by the size and the new second producer of module records, which the author explicitly asks a maintainer to weigh, plus the posted inline findings.

`Bun__AnalyzedModuleRecord__request` decoded `JSC::ScriptFetchParameters::Type`
with its own literals. `RequestType::from_script_fetch_parameters_type` now
derives the tags from `FetchParameters::to_script_fetch_parameters_type`, and a
static_assert pins `Type::None` to 0.

The `ChunkThatDoesNotParse` test no longer asserts the exit code of a build
that reports a bytecode failure.

Review follow-up in 0f279cb. It changes no behavior.

  • The type tag of a module request is now decoded through the table that encodes it (src/js_printer/lib.rs).
  • ChunkThatDoesNotParse no longer asserts the exit code of a build that reports a bytecode failure.
  • The notes on the timeout argument and on concurrency need no change. The reasons are in their threads.
  • The linked issues check names bundler: record the ESM module record's TLA flag from the awaits the printer emits #37770. That is another open pull request, and this pull request does not claim to complete it. The Downsides section lists its case (a linker-emitted await with no banner) as still open.

The follow-up commit addresses both points from my earlier review, and a fresh pass over the whole range found no bugs; given the size and the new second producer of module records (JSC's analysis on a scratch global), a maintainer's look is still worthwhile, and the PR itself asks a maintainer to pick between the three shapes.

What was reviewed:

  • from_script_fetch_parameters_type now derives its tags from the encoder (FetchParameters(0) lands in the _ => 5 arm, None/Javascript collapse to 1, so the separate 0 arm is JSC's None), with the new None == 0 static_assert closing the gap.
  • The C++ -> Rust record callbacks: every request index goes through self.requests.get(..), so the u32::MAX sentinel from requestOf fails the analysis instead of indexing out of bounds; the thread-local scratch global is gcProtected and released in Bun__destroyBytecodeCacheVM next to the existing VM teardown.
  • The early chunk_code() path: each analyzed chunk's CodeResult is taken exactly once in the output loop, and the standalone-HTML code_standalone loop cannot coexist with it (CompileMode::Executable vs StandaloneHtml).
  • ChunkThatDoesNotParse no longer asserts the buggy exit code, so #36708 can land without editing this suite.
Extended reasoning...

The range adds about 1,070 lines across the bundler linker, parser entry, printer ModuleInfo builder, JSC bytecode-cache bindings (a new ModuleAnalyzer pass on a per-thread scratch JSGlobalObject) and 500 lines of tests; the newest commit is a 25-line follow-up that resolves both inline nits from the prior review. It touches no auth, crypto or network surface; the new untrusted-index boundary (C++ request indices into the Rust record) is bounds-checked. The bug hunt ran dry with no findings and the ruled-out candidate was a style duplicate, but the change is large, introduces a second producer of ESM module records, and the author explicitly asks a maintainer to choose between three designs, so approval without a human is not appropriate.

### What does this PR do?

Hardening. This collects the open pull requests that fix a crash in Bun
into one change, and fixes about 20 more crashes that had no pull
request.

"Crash" here means a segfault, a Rust panic, an abort, a failed
assertion, memory corruption that a sanitizer reports, a native stack
overflow, or an exception that ends the process and that the program
can't catch. With this PR those cases throw a normal error, print a
normal CLI error and exit 1, or just work.

306 pull requests are included: 227 whole, and 79 cut down to the crash
fix where the rest was a refactor, a feature or a behavior change. Each
one was checked against current `main` first. 45 more turned out to be
fixed already, and 17 were duplicates. The full list is at the bottom.

#### Crashes you could hit in normal use

- **`bun build` with macros and a `.env` file crashed at random.** In a
repro with many macro modules, more than a third of the builds crashed.
Now 3,000 of 3,000 produce the right bundle. (#45960)
- **`bun run` and `bunx` aborted if a signal arrived while the child was
being spawned.** (#38926, #45965)
- **`bun build --compile ./index.js ./public/*` panicked** if an
embedded file's name wasn't valid UTF-8.
- **A truncated or corrupted compiled executable** died with SIGBUS or a
panic at startup. It now prints an error. (#31787, #38251, #41360)
- **Dev server:** several `Option::unwrap()` panics after a failed or
deleted import (#38046, #44744, #44746), a segfault when an `onLoad`
plugin throws while another bundle is queued, a request that hung and
then panicked with `bundle active`, and `server.stop()` that never
resolved after a client aborted a waiting request.
- **`Bun.serve`:** `server.fetch(url, { headers: new Headers() })`
followed by a GC segfaulted (#40888). Routes were used after free after
`server.reload()` with `tls.serverName` (#38636).
- **`text()` and `json()` on a stream of string chunks** could abort the
process, a regression in 1.4.0. (#44269)
- **`Bun.Transpiler` with `exports.eliminate` or `exports.replace`**
aborted on `export default 1` and on most re-export clauses. (#44137)
- **A decorated `declare` field in a class expression** with
`experimentalDecorators` panicked. (#38095)
- **YAML and JSON5 files with a key that isn't a string** panicked with
`--no-bundle` and in `Bun.Transpiler`. (#41827)
- **`Bun.FileSystemRouter`:** reading `.params` segfaulted when a
rejected route candidate left its parameters behind. (#39290, #39291)
- **Native addons that call `uv_async_*`, `uv_timer_*`, `uv_idle_*`,
`uv_prepare_*`, `uv_check_*`, `uv_queue_work` or `uv_cwd`** aborted with
"unsupported uv function" on Linux and macOS. They're implemented now.
(#36609, #39652, #39892)
- **`--watch` and `--hot`** panicked when the system was out of inotify
instances or file descriptors, or when the reload `exec` failed. They
print an error now. (#39629, #39975, #44837)
- **Paths longer than the path buffer** panicked in `bun install`, the
resolver, the bundler, `--compile`, `tsconfig.json` `paths` and
`baseUrl`, `package.json` `main` and `sideEffects`, `bun run --filter`,
`bun pm diff`, source maps and snapshots. They're ordinary errors now,
or they work. (#36340, #37529, #39104, #39650, #43067)
- **A Worker that creates a `ShadowRealm` and imports
`node:worker_threads` in it** segfaulted.
- **`structuredClone` or `postMessage` of an X25519 key** gave an object
that aborted the process when read. (#45624)
- **`node:stream` web adapters and `node:http2`** could end the process
with an exception that no handler could catch. (#45076, #45975)
- **Windows:** a watcher panic in a burst of file changes (#44344), a
segfault after the machine resumes from sleep (#33015), crashes in the
shell's pipe reader (#39638, #43606), and addons that import from
`node.exe` without the delay-load hook (#35618).

Most of the rest needs unusual input: strings near the 2 GiB limit,
buffers that another thread or a getter resizes or detaches in the
middle of a call, `worker.terminate()` at a bad moment, running out of
memory or file descriptors, very deep nesting, or hostile arguments to
`bun:ffi`, `node:vm` and `bun:sqlite`.

#### Behavior changes

Things that didn't crash before and behave differently now:

- `new` on native functions that aren't constructors throws a
`TypeError`, as in Node: `util.types.*`, `buffer.isAscii`, `isUtf8`,
`transcode`, `resolveObjectURL`, `bun:jsc` exports, `cc()` symbols. It
used to return the call's result. They also stop printing as `[class
hostname]`. (#34575)
- `` $`cmd` `` throws `ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE` if an environment
variable's name or value contains a NUL byte. It used to cut the value
at the NUL. (#44981)
- `cc()` functions throw a `TypeError` for arguments that used to reach
C as garbage, and `read.*(ptr, NaN)` throws. (#37989, #38057, #40773)
- As PID 1, `bun` exits with 128 + the signal number on Ctrl+C or
`docker stop`. (#38877)
- A `NODE_MODULE` addon that's already loaded by the main thread throws
`ERR_DLOPEN_FAILED` when a live Worker loads it too, as in Node.
(#39968)
- An exception from a `node:vm` context reaches `uncaughtException`
handlers. (#39992) `vm.constants.DONT_CONTEXTIFY` returns the real
global proxy. (#34623)
- `createPrivateKey` rejects an EC JWK whose private value doesn't match
its public point. (#33752)
- `@dec static {}` is a syntax error, as in TypeScript and esbuild.
(#44883)
- `clearTimeout` ignores 0 and negative ids, and timer ids no longer
wrap. (#44771)
- HEAD for a `Response` whose body is an S3-backed `Blob` reports the
length that GET sends. (#44734)
- `bun:sqlite` and `node:sqlite`: if `iterate()` left a write unfinished
on a connection that has a hook, a user function or an authorizer, the
write is finished on the connection's next call instead of during
garbage collection. If the database is gone too, it's rolled back.
- `bun test --bail` runs exit listeners and closes SQLite databases.
(#39010)
- Dev server: a request for a client script waits while a bundle is in
flight (#42733), query strings reach framework routes (#33232), and a
request gets a 500 instead of hanging when plugins fail (#36812).

#### File formats

- `.jsc` bytecode files get a 24-byte footer so they can be verified
before decoding. Files from an older Bun are ignored and the source is
parsed instead. (#39396)
- `node:vm` `cachedData` gets an 8-byte checksum. A blob from an older
Bun is rejected, which the API allows. (#32839)
- The built-in modules section of a compiled executable changes from
format 1 to 2 and carries an engine stamp. (#44907)

#### Performance

Measured in instructions per operation on release builds of this branch
and its base, with an A/A run for the noise floor (0.0 to 0.2 %).

No change: `Bun.serve`, `node:http`, WebSocket echo and publish, `bun
build` of 3,807 modules, `bun run` with 2,000 imports, `readdir` /
`Glob` / `fs.cp` over 23,689 entries, startup and RSS. The binary grows
by 176 KB (0.17 %).

| Faster | Instructions |
| --- | --- |
| WebSocket echo of a 1 MB non-ASCII text message | −72 % |
| `Bun.inspect` of a large non-ASCII string | −39 % |
| `Bun.markdown.html` on large non-ASCII input | −33 % |
| `` $`cmd` `` with 300 environment variables | −6 % |
| `fs.readSync` | −5 % |
| `TextEncoder.encodeInto`, short ASCII strings | −4 % |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, 16-byte inputs | −17 % |

| Slower | Instructions | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `cc()` calls | +5 to +51 per call | Argument count and type checks,
and a check for `close()` (#37989, #38057, #43802, #44921). `dlopen()`
calls don't change |
| `process.env.X = v` | 38 → 593 per write | Writes aren't cached. Reads
don't change (#38871) |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, inputs of 1 KB or more | +4 to +9 % | Password
and salt are copied (#40554) |
| `bun build` with an object `--define` used thousands of times | +4.5 %
| The object is copied per use (#45969) |

#### Not included

- Fixes that need a WebKit change: #39967, #42534, #42982, #43764,
#43786, #44226. #42185 too: a typed array that has no `ArrayBuffer` yet
can't be pinned, so `view.buffer.transfer()` during an async call can
still free its bytes. Creating the `ArrayBuffer` up front costs 7 to 12
% on every async `fs` call, so the fix belongs in JSC: an `ArrayBuffer`
created while the view is borrowed should start out pinned.
- #45442 (`calc()` sums as a flat list): it changes minified output for
real stylesheets to survive a `calc()` with 25,000 terms. It deserves
its own review.
- #40023 (Windows event loop redesign), #29928 (Windows exit path),
#40534, #43963, #39571, #42904, #42834, #36355, #43266: refactors or
features whose crash is already covered or isn't a crash.
- The pull requests marked *(crash fix only)* below should stay open for
their other half.

### How did you verify your code works?

- **Tests.** Every fix has a test that fails on `main` (a release or an
ASAN build) and passes on this branch, except where that isn't
practical: code that only runs on Windows or macOS, inputs that need
several GB of memory, and a few rare races. Those were checked by hand
or by reading.
- **Stored repro scripts.** 230 crash repros ran on release and ASAN
builds of this branch and of `main`, side by side. Release: 88 no longer
crash. ASAN: 106 no longer crash. None crashes that didn't before. What
still crashes needs WebKit, is SQLite's own bug, or isn't a crash. The
ASAN number is from a later commit than the release number.
- **Dev server.** Because one fix makes requests wait, 2,171 generated
programs ran random interleavings of edits, build errors, failing
plugins, reloads, stops and disconnects with about 120,000 requests. No
request hung, was answered twice or got a stale body. `main` hung in 82
of 1,161 programs. This also found the four dev server bugs listed
above.
- **Path helpers.** 336,000 boundary cases with buffers of exactly the
computed size, and 12,003 random calls through 30 JS APIs on an ASAN
build, compared with `main`. No sanitizer report, and the results match
wherever `main` doesn't panic.
- **What worked on 1.4.3 still works.** Reviewers compared behavior with
1.4.3 and took out what changed it: for example an output directory
layout change for 9 or more entry points, a `server.reload()` change,
and a changed error message for `import("file:///50%deposit.ts")`.
- **Not run locally:** the Windows, macOS and FreeBSD code paths. CI
compiles and tests them.
