Problem

  • require("node:crypto").createSecretKey(Buffer.allocUnsafe(2 ** 31)) aborts the process (panic(main thread): abort() called, rc 134). 2 ** 31 - 1 works. The same 2 GiB buffer aborts createHmac, createCipheriv, hkdfSync (ikm, salt, info), crypto.sign (data), crypto.verify (signature) and publicEncrypt/privateDecrypt (oaepLabel).
  • Each of these copies the caller's bytes with an infallible Vector<uint8_t>::append (KeyObject::prepareSecretKey, src/jsc/bindings/node/crypto/KeyObject.cpp:2134; CryptoHkdf.cpp prepareKey and copyBufferOrString; CryptoSignJob.cpp:290,324; JSCipher.cpp:118). WTF::Vector stores its size as unsigned and isValidCapacityForVector caps it at INT32_MAX bytes, so reserveCapacity<FailureAction::Crash> calls CRASH() for 2^31.

Fix

  • Add copyArgumentBytes(globalObject, scope, bytes, argName) to CryptoUtil. Above INT32_MAX bytes it throws ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE with the message "<argName> is too big" and copies nothing. Every caller-sized copy listed above goes through it.
  • This is what Node does for the same arguments: key is too big, salt is too big, data is too big, signature is too big, oaepLabel is too big are Node's own ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE messages at the same INT32_MAX bound. The one divergence is createSecretKey, which Node accepts at 2 GiB. Bun now throws key is too big there instead of aborting.
  • The key.size() > INT_MAX check in the Cipheriv constructor ran after the copy had already crashed, and a Vector can never exceed that size, so it is removed.
  • Verified: test/js/node/crypto/node-crypto.test.js (new subprocess test, aborts on 1.4.3, passes with the fix). Also crypto.key-objects, crypto.hmac, crypto-rsa, hkdf-callback-null, sign-jwk-ieee-p1363 and 12 vendored test-crypto-{hkdf,sign-verify,key-objects,hmac,cipheriv-decipheriv,rsa-dsa,...}.js pass.

Background

  • WTF::Vector<T> keeps m_size/m_capacity as 32-bit unsigned. append/reserveCapacity default to FailureAction::Crash, so a capacity past (UINT_MAX >> 1) / sizeof(T) is a deliberate CRASH(), not an allocation failure. A static_assert ties the new check to that limit.
  • A JS ArrayBuffer can be up to 4 GiB, so any binding that copies a user buffer into a Vector needs a bound first. The WebCrypto entry points already have one (test/js/web/crypto/web-crypto.test.ts, "oversized inputs"); this is the node:crypto side.
  • Node's C++ uses ArrayBufferOrViewContents::CheckSizeInt32() for these arguments and throws THROW_ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE(env, "<name> is too big"), which is where the messages come from.
Notes

Doors checked on bun 1.4.3 vs node 26.3.0 with one Buffer.allocUnsafe(2 ** 31):

                              bun 1.4.3 node 26.3.0 bun with fix
createSecretKey(b) abort 134 ok ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE key is too big
createHmac("sha256", b)       abort 134     Error error:00000000:lib(0)          ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE key is too big
createCipheriv(gcm, b, iv) abort 134 ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE key is too big same as node
hkdfSync(_, b, ...) abort 134 ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE key is too big same as node
hkdfSync(_, _, b, ...) abort 134 ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE salt is too big same as node
hkdfSync(_, _, _, b, _)       abort 134     ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE (info > 1024 bytes) ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE info is too big
sign("sha256", b, key) abort 134 ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE data is too big same as node
verify(_, _, key, b) abort 134 ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE signature is too big same as node
publicEncrypt({oaepLabel: b}) abort 134 ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE oaepLabel is too big same as node
subtle.digest / importKey OperationError (already bounded)
createHash().update(b)        ok (no copy)

For info, Node validates the 1024-byte HKDF limit in JS before the size check, so its message differs above 2 GiB. Bun keeps the 1024-byte check after the copy, so a 2 GiB info reports info is too big. Both are ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE.

The string paths (createSecretKey("..."), hkdf string salt/info) also go through the helper. A JS string cannot reach 2^31 UTF-8 bytes in practice, but the copy is the same statement.

All doors were also run under BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1 on the debug build with no unchecked-exception assertions.

Status: reproduced on bun 1.4.3 and main with require("node:crypto").createSecretKey(Buffer.allocUnsafe(2 ** 31)) (rc 134, panic(main thread): abort() called), plus the createHmac, createCipheriv, hkdfSync (ikm/salt/info), sign/verify and oaepLabel doors. With the fix each throws ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE " is too big" like Node. Test: test/js/node/crypto/node-crypto.test.js ("rejects >2 GiB buffer arguments").

CI: 180 of 181 jobs pass on b37e104. The one red job is test/js/bun/http/serve-pending-promise-abort-leak.test.ts on debian x64-asan, a Bun.serve streaming GC test that this diff does not touch. Ready for review.

Walkthrough

The PR adds centralized, size-checked byte copying for Node crypto inputs. Key, HKDF, signature, and OAEP paths now handle copy failures. The regression test covers oversized inputs and normal HMAC processing.

Changes

Crypto input handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Centralized byte copying
src/jsc/bindings/node/crypto/CryptoUtil.*
Adds copyArgumentBytes, which returns an optional byte vector and reports ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE when input exceeds INT32_MAX.

… UTF-8 (#42798)

### Problem
- A non-ASCII string of 2^30 Latin-1 characters or more aborts the
process: `panic(main thread): abort() called`, exit 134, also inside
`try` / `catch`. Each API that reads it through `Bun::UTF8View` does
this, for example `x509.checkHost("\u00e9".repeat(2 ** 30))`. Fuzzing
found it, with no user report.
- `UTF8View` (`src/jsc/bindings/BunString.h:18`) called `utf8()`, which
is `tryGetUTF8()` plus `RELEASE_ASSERT`. It had no failure channel.

### Fix
- `UTF8View` has no public constructor. `UTF8View::tryCreate()` returns
`std::nullopt` when `tryGetUTF8()` fails, and an overload throws
`RangeError: Out of memory`, as #42202 and #42308 do.
- An 8-bit ASCII string is still borrowed, never copied. Each user
passes a pointer and a length. A `const char*` consumer always needs a
copy, and that case is not in this PR (Notes).
- These throw now: `new X509Certificate(string)`, `hkdf` / `hkdfSync`
(`salt`, `info`), `bun:sqlite` SQL text and string parameters, `new
Bun.CookieMap(string)`. `checkHost`, `checkEmail`,
`require.resolve.paths` and `Module._resolveLookupPaths` only look the
string up, so they answer "no match". Removed `keyFromString`,
`passphraseFromBufferSource`, `keyFromPublicString` (no caller).
- Verified: `test/js/bun/util/utf8-conversion-limit.test.ts`. The
unfixed build aborts at the first case. One row shows that an ASCII
string is not copied.

### Background
- A JSC string is Latin-1 (8-bit) or UTF-16, with no NUL terminator.
`UTF8View` borrows an 8-bit all-ASCII string and converts any other
string with WTF.
- WTF reserves 2 bytes per Latin-1 character and a buffer holds at most
2^31 - 1 bytes, so 2^30 Latin-1 characters fail. A 16-bit string fails
at a UTF-8 form of 2^31 bytes.
- JSC throws `RangeError: Out of memory` for a string that it cannot
create.

<details><summary>Notes</summary>

**Repro, on release 1.4.3 canary (09bb546, linux x64).** Each line
aborts on its own with exit 134, at 1.1 GB RSS in about 0.6 s.

```js
const crypto = require("node:crypto");
const { Database } = require("bun:sqlite");
const long = "\u00e9".repeat(2 ** 30); // Latin-1, not ASCII
const x509 = new crypto.X509Certificate(pem);
const db = new Database(":memory:");
x509.checkHost(long);
x509.checkEmail(long);
new crypto.X509Certificate(long);
crypto.hkdfSync("sha256", "key", long, "info", 8); // salt
crypto.hkdfSync("sha256", "key", "salt", long, 8); // info
crypto.hkdf("sha256", "key", long, "info", 8, () => {});
require.resolve.paths(long);
require("node:module")._resolveLookupPaths(long);
db.run(long);
db.prepare(long);
db.prepare("SELECT length(?)").get(long);
new Bun.CookieMap("a=%41" + long); // the value is converted only when the header has a "%"
```

An ASCII string of the same length is clean in all of them, because
`UTF8View` borrows it. A 16-bit string aborts too: 715,827,883 x U+0800
has a UTF-8 form of 2^31 + 1 bytes. With this PR all of these cases
throw or answer "no match" for that string as well. One character below
the limit (2^30 - 1 x U+00E9) still converts: `checkHost` returns
`undefined` after 8 s on release.

Two of these did not use `UTF8View` before. The `bun:sqlite` parameter
binding had its own copy of the same dispatch (borrow ASCII, else
`utf8()`). `Module._resolveLookupPaths` is the twin of
`require.resolve.paths` and called `utf8()` for the same builtin check.

**Not in this PR.** These call `String::utf8()` or `StringView::utf8()`
directly, not `UTF8View`. They abort for a string of 2^30 characters,
ASCII included.

character shorter) |
| `hkdf(digest)` and the other digest, cipher and curve names |
`ncrypto.cpp` | #42780 |
| `hkdf(ikm)` as a string of 2^31 UTF-8 bytes | `CryptoHkdf.cpp`
`prepareKey` | #42187 |
| `process.execve` | `BunProcess.cpp` | #42308 |
| `Set-Cookie` header write | `CookieMap.cpp:20` | #42237 |
| `bun:sqlite` `new Database(filename)`, `serialize(name)`,
`loadExtension(path, entryPoint)`, `fileControl(name)`,
`setCustomSQLite(path)` | `JSSQLStatement.cpp:1208`, `1377`, `1428`,
`1430`, `1803`, `1955` | follow-up, with the 20 sites of `node:sqlite`

Most of them pass a `const char*` to a C API (`sqlite3_open_v2`,
`sqlite3_serialize`, `sqlite3_load_extension`, `X509_check_ip_asc`,
`EVP_get_digestbyname`). A WTF string has no NUL terminator
(`StringImpl::allocationSize` is `tailOffset + length * sizeof(T)`), so
that case always needs a copy, and the borrowed branch of `UTF8View`
cannot serve it. It stays on `tryGetUTF8()`. `src/jsc` and `src/runtime`
have about 100 `utf8()` call sites. Each needs a look: some pass a
pointer and a length and can move to `UTF8View`, which also saves the
copy of an ASCII string. That is a separate change.

**Related open PRs**
- #42187 edits `copyBufferOrString` in `CryptoHkdf.cpp` and keeps the
`UTF8View utf8(view);` line. The PR that merges second takes the
`tryCreate` form, a 3 line rebase.
- #42363 rewrites `validToDate` / `validFromDate` and drops their
`UTF8View`.
- #33312 adds 7 new `Bun::UTF8View(...)` constructor calls (clipboard).
After this PR they do not compile until they use `tryCreate`. That is
the purpose of the private constructor: a new user cannot skip the
failure case. An unchecked `tryCreate(s)->span()` still compiles.

**Test.** The length is what is under test, so the child holds a string
of 1 GiB, and a second one while the cookie header is joined (2.5 GB
peak). One child runs the 14 cases and takes 6 to 10 s in a debug ASAN
build. About 5 s of that is the last row, where the unoptimized build
scans 1 GiB for a non-ASCII byte. The test skips below 8 GiB of total
memory and carries a 30 s ceiling, like
`error-message-string-length-limit.test.ts`. A second test runs the same
APIs with `"café"` and `"café 😀"` to check that a string that converts
still gives the same result.

**The ASCII row.** `tryGetUTF8()` refuses every 8-bit string of 2^30
characters before it reads one (`StringImpl.h`
`tryGetUTF8ForCharacters`:
`isValidCapacityForVector<char8_t>(characters.size() * 2)`). So a
`UTF8View` that copied an ASCII string of that length reports `Out of
memory`. The row binds `"q".repeat(2 ** 30)` as a `bun:sqlite`
parameter. The bundled SQLite answers `string or blob too big` (its
limit is 1e9 bytes). The system SQLite that macOS loads takes up to 2
GiB and returns the length. The row accepts these two answers and no
other: each shows that SQLite got the string's buffer. The same
mechanism is why `Module._resolveLookupPaths("q".repeat(2 ** 30))`
aborts on `main`: it called `request.utf8()` to pass a pointer and a
length. It borrows now.

**Also ran (debug ASAN build):** `x509.test.ts`,
`x509-subclass.test.ts`, the vendored `test-crypto-x509.js`,
`test-crypto-hkdf.js`, `test-crypto-sign-verify.js`,
`test-crypto-key-objects.js`, `test-require-resolve.js`,
`hkdf-callback-null.test.ts`, `hkdf-zero-length.test.ts`,
`sqlite.test.js`, the four cookie suites,
`decodeURIComponentSIMD.test.ts`, `node-module-module.test.js`,
`resolve.test.ts`, `webview-chrome-pipe.test.ts`,
`webview-chrome-disconnect.test.ts`. The child script also ran with
`BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1`, with no report. In
`sqlite.test.js`, `#13082` times out on this machine's debug build
(about 6 s against the 5 s limit), with and without this change.

**Self-review: 6 concerns raised, 4 addressed.**
- Addressed: `checkHost` / `checkEmail` threw. They return `undefined`
now. The rule that they and `checkIP` in #42780 follow: a call reports
what it reports for the same string one character shorter. That string
is a name that matches no certificate.
- Addressed: the same 4 line throw block appeared 7 times. It is the
`tryCreate(globalObject, scope, view)` overload now.
- Addressed: the `bun:sqlite` parameter binding still aborted, through
its own copy of the dispatch.
- Addressed: the description named API surfaces as done. It names
parameters now, and the table above lists what is left, with an owner
for each row.
- Rejected: convert the six other `utf8()` calls of `JSSQLStatement.cpp`
here, through a new `Bun::tryUTF8`. They are direct `utf8()` callers
that need a NUL-terminated copy. They belong with the `node:sqlite`
sites in one change for that mechanism.
- Rejected: bound the conversion by `Bun::maxVectorSize` so that a test
can reach the failure with a small string. It would test a branch that
production never takes, and a crash fix needs the crashing input as its
fixture.

**Review.** The review asked that the two cases stay apart: a `const
char*` consumer (always a copy) and a pointer plus length consumer
(borrow an ASCII string). `UTF8View` is the second case only, before and
after this PR. Since the review: the comment on `UTF8View` says so, the
fields are `m_borrowed` and `m_converted`, and the ASCII row above
guards the borrow.

…ad of aborting

createSecretKey, createHmac, createCipheriv, hkdf/hkdfSync (ikm, salt,
info), sign/verify (data, signature) and publicEncrypt/privateDecrypt
(oaepLabel) copy the caller's bytes into a WTF::Vector<uint8_t> with an
infallible append. Vector caps its capacity at INT32_MAX elements and
calls CRASH() past that, so a 2^31-byte Buffer aborted the process.

Add copyArgumentBytes() in CryptoUtil, which throws ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE
"<name> is too big" above INT32_MAX bytes (the limit and wording Node
uses for these arguments) and route every such copy through it. The
late key-size check in the Cipheriv constructor ran after the copy and
could never fire, so it is removed.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline notes, I also checked the behavior-preserving parts of the refactor: utf8->bytes() is just a byteCast of the old span() (src/jsc/bindings/BunString.h:37); the dropped keyData.size() > INT_MAX check in JSCipherConstructor.cpp is unreachable now because keyData is the Vector produced by prepareSecretKey, which is bounded by the new helper; and every std::nullopt return from copyBufferOrString/copyArgumentBytes is paired with a throw, so the if (!salt)/if (!info) checks replacing RETURN_IF_EXCEPTION do not drop an exception path.

Extended reasoning...

The change routes every node:crypto user-buffer copy into WTF::Vector through a single bounded helper, which is crypto input handling but no key-material or algorithm logic changes. The two posted findings are nits (test skips silently without 2 GiB and the bound is a hand-rolled INT32_MAX); the refactor-equivalence concerns listed in the body were checked against the source and ruled out.

🟡 nit (optional): maintainers get a regression test that silently reports PASS whenever the CI runner cannot hand out a 2 GiB Uint8Array, so the new guard goes unverified there. The bound at CryptoUtil.cpp:718 is a hard-coded INT32_MAX instead of the in-tree Bun::maxVectorSize<uint8_t>() from src/jsc/bindings/VectorSizeLimit.h, which tests can lower via setSyntheticAllocationLimitForTesting. Fix: compare against Bun::maxVectorSize<uint8_t>() (same INT32_MAX in production) and rewrite the test to lower the limit and use a small buffer, dropping the SKIP branch at test/js/node/crypto/node-crypto.test.js:1180 so every assertion can fail.

Why this was flagged

The new test at test/js/node/crypto/node-crypto.test.js:1176-1182 does new Uint8Array(2 ** 31) in a subprocess and, if that throws, prints "SKIP" and exits 0; the parent then skips the whole toEqual block at :1215 and only asserts exitCode 0, so the test passes without exercising any of the eleven guarded paths. That allocation fails on memory-constrained or Windows CI runners, which is exactly the environment where a regression would go unnoticed. The cause is that copyArgumentBytes at src/jsc/bindings/node/crypto/CryptoUtil.cpp:718 hard-codes bytes.size() > INT32_MAX, while the repository already has Bun::maxVectorSize<uint8_t>() in src/jsc/bindings/VectorSizeLimit.h:13-18, which returns the same bound in production but is lowered by Bun__stringSyntheticAllocationLimit so tests reach it cheaply. On the base branch there is no test at all, so this is a weaker-than-intended safety net rather than a behavior change; REVIEW.md asks that every assertion be able to fail and that skips go through harness mechanisms with a reason.

Verification: When the subprocess cannot allocate a 2 GiB Uint8Array, the new test reports PASS without exercising any guarded path. The parent at test/js/node/crypto/node-crypto.test.js:1212-1230 guards the whole toEqual block with if (stdout.trim() !== "SKIP") and only asserts exitCode 0. src/jsc/bindings/node/crypto/CryptoUtil.cpp:717-718 hard-codes bytes.size() > INT32_MAX instead of Bun::maxVectorSize<uint8_t>().

🟡 nit (optional): callers passing an info longer than 1024 bytes to hkdf/hkdfSync still get it copied in full (up to 2 GiB) before rejection, and past INT32_MAX get a message that differs from Node's. copyBufferOrString at CryptoHkdf.cpp:202 copies info before the 1024-byte check at CryptoHkdf.cpp:209, so a 2 GiB info reports "info is too big" where Node reports "must not contain more than 1024 bytes". Fix: check the view's byteLength against 1024 before copying info (string, ArrayBufferView and ArrayBuffer inputs alike), so oversized info is rejected with Node's message and never copied. The PR notes this divergence as accepted; the fix is within its purpose.

Why this was flagged

crypto.hkdfSync("sha256", "key", "salt", info, 16) with info.byteLength > 1024 enters HkdfJobCtx::fromJS at src/jsc/bindings/node/crypto/CryptoHkdf.cpp:183. Line 202 calls copyBufferOrString, which copies the whole info buffer into a Vector; only afterwards does line 209 compare info->size() > 1024 and throw ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE "must not contain more than 1024 bytes". For info.byteLength > INT32_MAX, copyArgumentBytes at src/jsc/bindings/node/crypto/CryptoUtil.cpp:718 throws first with the message "info is too big", while Node's lib/internal/crypto/hkdf.js validates the 1024-byte limit in JS before any native copy and reports "must not contain more than 1024 bytes". On the base branch the same input aborted the process, so the new behavior is strictly better, but it copies up to 2 GiB for inputs between 1025 and INT32_MAX bytes and diverges from Node's message above INT32_MAX. Checking the view's byteLength before the copy removes both.

Verification: CryptoHkdf.cpp:202 copyBufferOrString copies the full info span into a Vector and only afterwards line 209 if (info->size() > 1024) throws "must not contain more than 1024 bytes". For bytes.size() > INT32_MAX, CryptoUtil.cpp:716-718 throws "info is too big" first. Node checks info.byteLength > 1024 in JS before any native copy. test-crypto-hkdf.js only asserts the code for the 1025-byte case, so no existing test breaks.

### What does this PR do?

Hardening. This collects the open pull requests that fix a crash in Bun
into one change, and fixes about 20 more crashes that had no pull
request.

"Crash" here means a segfault, a Rust panic, an abort, a failed
assertion, memory corruption that a sanitizer reports, a native stack
overflow, or an exception that ends the process and that the program
can't catch. With this PR those cases throw a normal error, print a
normal CLI error and exit 1, or just work.

306 pull requests are included: 227 whole, and 79 cut down to the crash
fix where the rest was a refactor, a feature or a behavior change. Each
one was checked against current `main` first. 45 more turned out to be
fixed already, and 17 were duplicates. The full list is at the bottom.

#### Crashes you could hit in normal use

- **`bun build` with macros and a `.env` file crashed at random.** In a
repro with many macro modules, more than a third of the builds crashed.
Now 3,000 of 3,000 produce the right bundle. (#45960)
- **`bun run` and `bunx` aborted if a signal arrived while the child was
being spawned.** (#38926, #45965)
- **`bun build --compile ./index.js ./public/*` panicked** if an
embedded file's name wasn't valid UTF-8.
- **A truncated or corrupted compiled executable** died with SIGBUS or a
panic at startup. It now prints an error. (#31787, #38251, #41360)
- **Dev server:** several `Option::unwrap()` panics after a failed or
deleted import (#38046, #44744, #44746), a segfault when an `onLoad`
plugin throws while another bundle is queued, a request that hung and
then panicked with `bundle active`, and `server.stop()` that never
resolved after a client aborted a waiting request.
- **`Bun.serve`:** `server.fetch(url, { headers: new Headers() })`
followed by a GC segfaulted (#40888). Routes were used after free after
`server.reload()` with `tls.serverName` (#38636).
- **`text()` and `json()` on a stream of string chunks** could abort the
process, a regression in 1.4.0. (#44269)
- **`Bun.Transpiler` with `exports.eliminate` or `exports.replace`**
aborted on `export default 1` and on most re-export clauses. (#44137)
- **A decorated `declare` field in a class expression** with
`experimentalDecorators` panicked. (#38095)
- **YAML and JSON5 files with a key that isn't a string** panicked with
`--no-bundle` and in `Bun.Transpiler`. (#41827)
- **`Bun.FileSystemRouter`:** reading `.params` segfaulted when a
rejected route candidate left its parameters behind. (#39290, #39291)
- **Native addons that call `uv_async_*`, `uv_timer_*`, `uv_idle_*`,
`uv_prepare_*`, `uv_check_*`, `uv_queue_work` or `uv_cwd`** aborted with
"unsupported uv function" on Linux and macOS. They're implemented now.
(#36609, #39652, #39892)
- **`--watch` and `--hot`** panicked when the system was out of inotify
instances or file descriptors, or when the reload `exec` failed. They
print an error now. (#39629, #39975, #44837)
- **Paths longer than the path buffer** panicked in `bun install`, the
resolver, the bundler, `--compile`, `tsconfig.json` `paths` and
`baseUrl`, `package.json` `main` and `sideEffects`, `bun run --filter`,
`bun pm diff`, source maps and snapshots. They're ordinary errors now,
or they work. (#36340, #37529, #39104, #39650, #43067)
- **A Worker that creates a `ShadowRealm` and imports
`node:worker_threads` in it** segfaulted.
- **`structuredClone` or `postMessage` of an X25519 key** gave an object
that aborted the process when read. (#45624)
- **`node:stream` web adapters and `node:http2`** could end the process
with an exception that no handler could catch. (#45076, #45975)
- **Windows:** a watcher panic in a burst of file changes (#44344), a
segfault after the machine resumes from sleep (#33015), crashes in the
shell's pipe reader (#39638, #43606), and addons that import from
`node.exe` without the delay-load hook (#35618).

Most of the rest needs unusual input: strings near the 2 GiB limit,
buffers that another thread or a getter resizes or detaches in the
middle of a call, `worker.terminate()` at a bad moment, running out of
memory or file descriptors, very deep nesting, or hostile arguments to
`bun:ffi`, `node:vm` and `bun:sqlite`.

#### Behavior changes

Things that didn't crash before and behave differently now:

- `new` on native functions that aren't constructors throws a
`TypeError`, as in Node: `util.types.*`, `buffer.isAscii`, `isUtf8`,
`transcode`, `resolveObjectURL`, `bun:jsc` exports, `cc()` symbols. It
used to return the call's result. They also stop printing as `[class
hostname]`. (#34575)
- `` $`cmd` `` throws `ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE` if an environment
variable's name or value contains a NUL byte. It used to cut the value
at the NUL. (#44981)
- `cc()` functions throw a `TypeError` for arguments that used to reach
C as garbage, and `read.*(ptr, NaN)` throws. (#37989, #38057, #40773)
- As PID 1, `bun` exits with 128 + the signal number on Ctrl+C or
`docker stop`. (#38877)
- A `NODE_MODULE` addon that's already loaded by the main thread throws
`ERR_DLOPEN_FAILED` when a live Worker loads it too, as in Node.
(#39968)
- An exception from a `node:vm` context reaches `uncaughtException`
handlers. (#39992) `vm.constants.DONT_CONTEXTIFY` returns the real
global proxy. (#34623)
- `createPrivateKey` rejects an EC JWK whose private value doesn't match
its public point. (#33752)
- `@dec static {}` is a syntax error, as in TypeScript and esbuild.
(#44883)
- `clearTimeout` ignores 0 and negative ids, and timer ids no longer
wrap. (#44771)
- HEAD for a `Response` whose body is an S3-backed `Blob` reports the
length that GET sends. (#44734)
- `bun:sqlite` and `node:sqlite`: if `iterate()` left a write unfinished
on a connection that has a hook, a user function or an authorizer, the
write is finished on the connection's next call instead of during
garbage collection. If the database is gone too, it's rolled back.
- `bun test --bail` runs exit listeners and closes SQLite databases.
(#39010)
- Dev server: a request for a client script waits while a bundle is in
flight (#42733), query strings reach framework routes (#33232), and a
request gets a 500 instead of hanging when plugins fail (#36812).

#### File formats

- `.jsc` bytecode files get a 24-byte footer so they can be verified
before decoding. Files from an older Bun are ignored and the source is
parsed instead. (#39396)
- `node:vm` `cachedData` gets an 8-byte checksum. A blob from an older
Bun is rejected, which the API allows. (#32839)
- The built-in modules section of a compiled executable changes from
format 1 to 2 and carries an engine stamp. (#44907)

#### Performance

Measured in instructions per operation on release builds of this branch
and its base, with an A/A run for the noise floor (0.0 to 0.2 %).

No change: `Bun.serve`, `node:http`, WebSocket echo and publish, `bun
build` of 3,807 modules, `bun run` with 2,000 imports, `readdir` /
`Glob` / `fs.cp` over 23,689 entries, startup and RSS. The binary grows
by 176 KB (0.17 %).

| Faster | Instructions |
| --- | --- |
| WebSocket echo of a 1 MB non-ASCII text message | −72 % |
| `Bun.inspect` of a large non-ASCII string | −39 % |
| `Bun.markdown.html` on large non-ASCII input | −33 % |
| `` $`cmd` `` with 300 environment variables | −6 % |
| `fs.readSync` | −5 % |
| `TextEncoder.encodeInto`, short ASCII strings | −4 % |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, 16-byte inputs | −17 % |

| Slower | Instructions | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `cc()` calls | +5 to +51 per call | Argument count and type checks,
and a check for `close()` (#37989, #38057, #43802, #44921). `dlopen()`
calls don't change |
| `process.env.X = v` | 38 → 593 per write | Writes aren't cached. Reads
don't change (#38871) |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, inputs of 1 KB or more | +4 to +9 % | Password
and salt are copied (#40554) |
| `bun build` with an object `--define` used thousands of times | +4.5 %
| The object is copied per use (#45969) |

#### Not included

- Fixes that need a WebKit change: #39967, #42534, #42982, #43764,
#43786, #44226. #42185 too: a typed array that has no `ArrayBuffer` yet
can't be pinned, so `view.buffer.transfer()` during an async call can
still free its bytes. Creating the `ArrayBuffer` up front costs 7 to 12
% on every async `fs` call, so the fix belongs in JSC: an `ArrayBuffer`
created while the view is borrowed should start out pinned.
- #45442 (`calc()` sums as a flat list): it changes minified output for
real stylesheets to survive a `calc()` with 25,000 terms. It deserves
its own review.
- #40023 (Windows event loop redesign), #29928 (Windows exit path),
#40534, #43963, #39571, #42904, #42834, #36355, #43266: refactors or
features whose crash is already covered or isn't a crash.
- The pull requests marked *(crash fix only)* below should stay open for
their other half.

### How did you verify your code works?

- **Tests.** Every fix has a test that fails on `main` (a release or an
ASAN build) and passes on this branch, except where that isn't
practical: code that only runs on Windows or macOS, inputs that need
several GB of memory, and a few rare races. Those were checked by hand
or by reading.
- **Stored repro scripts.** 230 crash repros ran on release and ASAN
builds of this branch and of `main`, side by side. Release: 88 no longer
crash. ASAN: 106 no longer crash. None crashes that didn't before. What
still crashes needs WebKit, is SQLite's own bug, or isn't a crash. The
ASAN number is from a later commit than the release number.
- **Dev server.** Because one fix makes requests wait, 2,171 generated
programs ran random interleavings of edits, build errors, failing
plugins, reloads, stops and disconnects with about 120,000 requests. No
request hung, was answered twice or got a stale body. `main` hung in 82
of 1,161 programs. This also found the four dev server bugs listed
above.
- **Path helpers.** 336,000 boundary cases with buffers of exactly the
computed size, and 12,003 random calls through 30 JS APIs on an ASAN
build, compared with `main`. No sanitizer report, and the results match
wherever `main` doesn't panic.
- **What worked on 1.4.3 still works.** Reviewers compared behavior with
1.4.3 and took out what changed it: for example an output directory
layout change for 9 or more entry points, a `server.reload()` change,
and a changed error message for `import("file:///50%deposit.ts")`.
- **Not run locally:** the Windows, macOS and FreeBSD code paths. CI
compiles and tests them.
