Problem

  • A worker that ends leaks what its VM's fields own: SUMMARY: AddressSanitizer: 8936 byte(s) leaked in 7 allocation(s) per worker that calls a macro. No user reported it.
  • VirtualMachine::exit_and_free (src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:2450) ends a worker or a bun lint plugin thread. It frees the VM's storage with dealloc, so no field destructor runs. destroy() frees only the fields it names.

Fix

  • exit_and_free calls drop_in_place on the VM before the dealloc, so each field frees what it owns.
  • macro_entry_points holds Box<MacroEntryPoint>. ref_strings is a ref_string::Table whose Drop releases each interned string's own ref. On this path destroy() leaves the transpiler to the destructors.
  • Verified: test/js/web/workers/worker-terminate-lifetime.test.ts (5 new tests, each fails on main). Also the worker, macro, router, transpiler and lint plugin suites under LeakSanitizer.
  • Self-reviewed: 33 concerns raised, 32 addressed. Not taken: destructors at main-thread exit, where the process ends.

Background

Downsides

Notes

How this was found

No issue reports this. A read of destroy() for another change showed that it does not name the macro tables. LeakSanitizer confirmed that, and showed the other fields below.

What one worker left (LeakSanitizer with test/leaksan.supp, debug build)

The worker main this PR
calls a macro (from its entry file, or through Bun.Transpiler#transformSync) 8936 bytes in 7 allocations 0
sets a require.extensions handler 151 bytes in 4 allocations 0
makes a Bun.FileSystemRouter 328 bytes in 8 allocations 0
makes new Bun.Transpiler({ macro }) 1 mimalloc heap 0
  • The second and third rows change by some bytes with the length of the paths.
  • LeakSanitizer does not see a mimalloc heap. The last row reads heapStats().mimalloc.heaps.current from bun:jsc.
  • The macro entry point is most of the first row. Its buffer is [u8; MAX_PATH_BYTES * 2 + 500]: 8,692 bytes on Linux. The same formula gives 197,104 bytes on Windows (computed, not measured).
  • A bun lint plugin that sets a require.extensions handler left 151 bytes in 4 allocations. It leaves 0 now.

Why the destructors can run there

  • teardown leaves each field valid to drop. Each free that destroy() names uses take, which leaves an empty value. Transpiler::deinit is the exception: it drops parts of the transpiler in place. So the worker path does not call it. It releases the macro context, which is a handle without a destructor, and the destructors drop the transpiler.
  • When the destructors run, the JSC VM, the loops of the thread and the runtime state are gone. Transpiler, Resolver, Linker, EventLoop, Waker and Debugger have no Drop of their own, and the caches of the resolver own only memory. The Drop of BundleOptions is empty. GarbageCollectionController::drop calls deinit() a second time, which does nothing. JobList is a raw pointer.
  • A bun_jsc::Strong returns early while its VM shuts down. It asks the thread for that VM, so the destructors run before VMHolder::set_vm(None).
  • The dead context owns socket groups. A socket group unlinks itself from the uSockets loop when it drops, and that drop now comes after the loop is freed. So teardown detaches those groups first (ScriptExecutionContext::detach_socket_groups_from_loop).
  • The transpiler now drops after the runtime state and the AST stores of the thread. The next section shows why no destructor reads them.

The order that moved

  • On main, destroy() calls Transpiler::deinit (src/bundler/transpiler.rs:100). It drops options, result, resolver.opts and resolve_results. After that, deinit_runtime_state (src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:674) drops the runtime state and frees the Expr and Stmt stores of the thread.
  • With this PR, a worker drops the whole transpiler after deinit_runtime_state (drop_in_place, src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:2437). That is those four parts and the rest of resolver, output_files and resolve_queue. Nothing dropped the rest before.
  • The runtime state holds only a handle for the arena of the transpiler. transpiler_arena is Arena::borrowing_default() (src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:359), which is the main heap of the process. Its Drop frees no block (src/bun_alloc/MimallocArena.rs:443). Transpiler.arena is a reference, so no destructor reads the freed handle.
  • Nothing that the transpiler owns points into the AST stores. Each transpile on the VM thread resets them (src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:2265). DefineData::parse clones each parsed define value out of the store (src/bundler/defines.rs:470).
  • No destructor follows a pointer to an AST node. expr::Data and StoreRef are Copy. Define, DefineData and DotDefine have no Drop, and the Drop of BundleOptions is empty. The destructors that moved free memory of the global allocator. The one heap that the drop destroys is the JSON cache of the resolver, which is the transpiler's own.
  • worker: give each Worker VM its own transpiler arena and free it with the Worker #46124 gives each worker an arena that owns its memory (Arena::new()). With both PRs, the define values are freed before the define table drops. The table frees its own keys and boxes and follows no StoreRef, so that order is safe too. Checked on a debug build of main, this PR and worker: give each Worker VM its own transpiler arena and free it with the Worker #46124 together, with MIMALLOC_PURGE_DELAY=0. worker-define.test.ts and worker-terminate-lifetime.test.ts pass. 300 workers in processes with five --define values, with the endings below: no sanitizer report.

Where the leak started

  • Before Rewrite Bun in Rust #30412, a worker's VM took the macro tables, the RefString map, each RefString and its bytes from the arena of the worker (web_worker.zig: initWorker(.{ .allocator = this.arena.?.allocator() })). The arena freed them in bulk when the worker ended. The port moved them to the global allocator.
  • The require.extensions table used the default allocator before the port too.

Other designs

  • More named frees in destroy(): the next owning field leaks again. An exhaustive destructure of Self there makes the compiler check that each field is named. Each free stays hand-written.
  • ManuallyDrop<Transpiler>, with Transpiler::deinit kept on the worker path: the caches of the resolver stay, and a worker that makes new Bun.Transpiler({ macro }) leaves one mimalloc heap.

What this PR does not do

Other PRs

Measurements (main, then this PR)

The first two lines are from the first version of this PR, on main ea6a2c7. Since then the rebase changed two lines of RefString.rs, and exit_and_free reads console and log before the destructors run.

  • Text: 107,095,893 then 107,103,317 bytes (llvm-size, release builds). exit_and_free grows from 280 to 7,954 bytes. destroy (4,505 bytes) becomes destroy_fields (2,309 bytes).
  • Instructions from the entry of destroy() to the return of exit_and_free, for a worker that fills none of these fields: 37,370 then 37,979. Counted with single steps in gdb on the release build, JIT off. Two worker exits gave the same count.
  • Allocator calls of a process that runs one worker whose script sets one timer (ASAN print_stats, debug build): 2529 malloc and 2189 free on both builds. A bun lint run with one plugin: 9581 malloc on both builds, 9370 then 9374 free.

Checks on the merge with main

All of these ran on the merge of this branch onto main e81a34c, as a debug build with ASAN, on Linux x64.

  • test/js/web/workers/worker-terminate-lifetime.test.ts: 32 pass.
  • test/napi/napi.test.ts -t worker: 13 pass, with --max-concurrency 3. On a debug build with all 13 at once, 11 go past the default 5 s limit.
  • A matrix of workers that run a TLS server or load an N-API addon: 18 bodies, 15 endings, both Worker kinds. That is 538 processes with 2 workers each (TLS 300, N-API 208, both in one worker 30). Every process exits 0 and prints nothing on stderr: no sanitizer report, no assertion, no hang.
  • The same with 12 workers per process, 6 at a time (6 bodies, 3 endings): 36 processes, 432 workers, the same result.
  • The same with Malloc=1, which puts the memory of JavaScriptCore under ASAN (6 endings): 214 processes, 428 workers, the same result.
  • The TLS bodies: Bun.serve with tls (plain, a streamed body, WebSocket, two SNI names, and the parent as the client), node:https, node:tls, Bun.listen with tls, node:http2 with createSecureServer, and a TLS client against a server of the parent.
  • The N-API bodies use the addons of test/napi/napi-app: external buffers and wraps that are live at the end, a threadsafe function with queued items, ungated calls in a loop, a finalizer that registers another finalizer, and cleanup hooks with an instance data finalizer.
  • The endings: drain, process.exit() at three moments, a throw, an unhandled rejection, a top-level await that never settles, a busy loop, and terminate() at 0 to 100 ms after the constructor and 0 to 300 ms after the first message.
  • Not run here: Windows and macOS. CI ran the suites there.

Tests

  • Four tests need ASAN. Each runs three workers that fill one field: one whose loop drains, one that calls process.exit(), one that its parent terminates. The fill runs from a timer, because test/leaksan.supp suppresses the module-evaluation frames. On main each test fails with a LeakSanitizer report: 26808 bytes in 21 allocations for each macro test, 453 bytes in 12 for require.extensions, about 1 KB in 24 for the router. They keep the timeout of the file, because a debug build needs about 12 s to print that report.
  • One test runs on every build. It counts mimalloc heaps across three workers: 3 on main, 0 with this PR. The first version passed 40 of 40 runs on a release build and 10 of 10 on a debug build.
  • The dns test of this file now sets BUN_DESTRUCT_VM_ON_EXIT=1, as the CI runner does. Without it that test fails on a debug build that runs the file directly, on main too.
  • test/leaksan.supp loses the FileSystemRouter.constructor line. The router test covers what it named.
  • Suites run under LeakSanitizer with the environment of the CI runner (debug build): in test/js/web/workers/, worker, worker-entry-point, worker-late-completion, message-channel and message-port-context-destroy-leak. In test/js/node/worker_threads/, worker_threads, worker_destruction, worker-shutdown-post-leak and worker-async-dispose. Also test/bundler/transpiler/macro-test.test.ts, test/bundler/transpiler/transpiler.test.js, test/js/bun/util/filesystem_router.test.ts, test/js/bun/module-graph/module-graph.test.ts, test/js/node/module/require-extensions.test.ts, test/regression/issue/39900.test.ts and test/cli/lint/js-plugins.test.ts.
  • Three tests of those suites fail, and fail the same way on a debug build of main: $ cp -R (worker-late-completion, 530 bytes in 4 allocations), bun build without --no-macros still runs macros (macro-test, 16 bytes in 1 allocation), and reload() while Bun.build() resolves the same directory (filesystem_router, a timeout).
  • js-plugins.test.ts ran with three tests at a time: 144 of 146 pass. The other two reach their 120 s limit. Each passes when it runs alone, on this build and on main. One of them takes 35 s to 97 s alone on either debug build.

Status: this PR carries the change. The new tests fail on main and pass on this branch.

How I reproduced the leak

Three files in one directory:

// index.ts
new Worker(new URL("./worker.ts", import.meta.url).href);

// worker.ts
import { m } from "./m.ts" with { type: "macro" };
console.log("value", m());

// m.ts
export function m() { return 1; }

Run them with a debug build (bun bd, which has ASAN) and LeakSanitizer on:

BUN_DESTRUCT_VM_ON_EXIT=1 \
ASAN_OPTIONS=detect_leaks=1 \
LSAN_OPTIONS=suppressions=test/leaksan.supp \
./build/debug/bun-debug run index.ts
  • main prints SUMMARY: AddressSanitizer: 8936 byte(s) leaked in 7 allocation(s).
  • This branch prints no report.

The other fields have the same shape of repro: a worker that sets a require.extensions handler, makes a Bun.FileSystemRouter, or makes new Bun.Transpiler({ macro }). The five new tests in test/js/web/workers/worker-terminate-lifetime.test.ts run each of them.

Walkthrough

VM teardown now drops owned resources and detaches socket groups before storage release. Macro entry points and reference strings use owned storage. Worker lifetime tests cover drain, explicit exit, and termination.

Changes

Worker VM teardown

Layer / File(s) Summary
Owned VM resources
src/jsc/RefString.rs, src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs, src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs, src/bundler/transpiler.rs
VirtualMachine stores boxed macro entry points and a ref_string::Table. Macro lookup uses stored values directly. Transpiler comments describe arena and deinitialization lifetimes.
VM teardown and field cleanup
src/jsc/ScriptExecutionContext.rs, src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs, src/runtime/cli/lint_js.rs
Teardown detaches socket groups and separates field cleanup from storage deallocation. exit_and_free drops the initialized VM before releasing auxiliary allocations. Lint teardown no longer clears argv first.
Worker lifetime regressions
test/js/web/workers/worker-terminate-lifetime.test.ts, test/leaksan.supp
Tests cover cleanup after worker drain, explicit exit, and termination. The DNS subprocess enables VM destruction, and the FileSystemRouter leak suppression is removed.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline note, I also checked the other post-drop_in_place hazards the description lists: Strong fields dropping after the JSC VM is gone (the shutdown early-return holds because set_vm(None) comes after), GarbageCollectionController running deinit twice (idempotent), and Bun.ModuleGraph contexts' socket groups outliving the freed uSockets loop (they are released before the dead context, so the new detach_socket_groups_from_loop only needs to cover dead_context). None turned into a finding.

Extended reasoning...

The change reworks worker and bun lint VM teardown in src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs so field destructors run before the raw storage is freed, retypes macro_entry_points to owned boxes, adds a ref_string::Table with a Drop that releases interned string refs, and detaches the dead context's socket groups before the loop is freed; it touches no security-sensitive surface. One inline nit was posted about VM field reads after drop_in_place. The destructor-ordering hazards listed above were examined and ruled out from the code, but the change reorders unsafe teardown of a large self-referential struct and the author explicitly asks a maintainer to confirm reversing the earlier raw-dealloc decision, so a human look remains worthwhile.

… freed

`VirtualMachine::exit_and_free` freed the storage of a thread's VM with
`dealloc`. No field destructor ran, and `destroy()` freed only the fields
it names. A worker, or a `bun lint` plugin thread, that filled another
owning field leaked it when the thread ended: the macro tables, the
`require.extensions` handlers, the interned ref strings, and the caches
of the transpiler's resolver.

`exit_and_free` now calls `drop_in_place` on the VM after `teardown` and
before the `dealloc`. A field that owns something frees it, with no line
in `destroy()`.

- `macro_entry_points` holds `Box<MacroEntryPoint>`, not an erased raw
  pointer.
- `ref_strings` is a `ref_string::Table`. Its `Drop` releases the ref
  that each interned string holds on itself.
- On this path `destroy` releases only the macro context of the
  transpiler. The destructors drop the transpiler, which frees the
  mimalloc heap of the resolver's JSON cache. `Transpiler::deinit` stays
  for a VM whose storage is never freed (the main thread, bake's build
  VM).
- The dead context's socket groups leave the uSockets loop before the
  loop is freed, because the context is now dropped after the loop.

LeakSanitizer, one worker each, without and with this change:
- a macro call: 8936 bytes in 7 allocations, then 0
- a `require.extensions` handler: 151 bytes in 4 allocations, then 0
- a `Bun.FileSystemRouter`: 328 bytes in 8 allocations, then 0
A worker that makes `new Bun.Transpiler({ macro })` left one mimalloc
heap. It leaves none now.

Detach graph-context socket groups before freeing the uSockets loop.

close_sockets() only closes sockets. It does not clear each group's loop_. destroy_fields(true) later drops graph_contexts, after bun_uws::free_thread_loop(). A graph context with initialized socket groups can therefore call SocketGroup::destroy through the freed loop during worker teardown.

Detach all graph-context groups before freeing the loop:

About the note on the socket groups of graph contexts (src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:2634): this PR does not change that order, and I do not see a way for it to fail.

  • On main, destroy() drops the graph contexts after the loop is freed (src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:5710 on main). This PR does not move that.
  • us_socket_group_deinit reads the loop only for a group that is linked (packages/bun-usockets/src/context.c:65). A group is linked only while it has a socket (us_internal_group_maybe_unlink, context.c:195).
  • The stop phase of the teardown closes each socket of each group that is linked to the loop, until no group is linked (RareData::close_all_socket_groups, src/jsc/rare_data.rs:918, through us_loop_close_all_groups, packages/bun-usockets/src/loop.c:219). Script cannot open a socket after that.

So when a graph context is dropped, its groups are empty and not linked, and SocketGroup::destroy does not read the loop.

This PR adds the detach for the dead context because it moves the drop of that context to after the loop. The call keeps the order that RareData::detach_socket_groups_from_loop documents for a thread teardown (src/jsc/rare_data.rs:1158).
