Includes #41444.

Problem

  • process.stdout gets no FileSink when Bun.file(fd).writer() throws at its first read (fd limit, or an fd that cannot be polled). A debug build then fails [getStdioWriteStream] ASSERTION FAILED: underlyingSink.
  • A release build falls back to a thread-pool fs.WriteStream (src/js/internal/fs/streams.ts:464). write() then process.exit() prints nothing. After one failed write, later writes get no callback.

Fix

  • The fallback stream is born constructed and writes with fs.writeSync. On EAGAIN it waits for the reader.
  • getStdioWriteStream drops the assert. A failed write turns autoDestroy on, so the stdio _destroy resets the stream. _final turns it off, so end() stays final.
  • Verified: test/js/node/process/process-stdio-no-sink.test.ts (12 tests, bun 1.4.3 fails 9), plus 34 node stdio tests.
  • Self-reviewed: 36 concerns raised, 31 addressed. Open: a macOS run, and three follow-ups (Notes).

Background

  • A FileSink is the native writer behind Bun.file(fd).writer(). With one, process.stdout.write() skips the Writable state.
  • An errored Writable that is not destroyed buffers later writes. Node destroys its stdio streams on error, and dummyDestroy (the stdio _destroy) resets them.
  • Considered autoDestroy always on: a write after end() then reaches the reader, which stdio: reset writable state after end() on file-backed process.stdout/stderr #33618 ruled out for pipes.

Downsides

  • A stream with no sink now blocks in write(). On a full non-blocking pipe it polls every 1 ms until the reader drains it.
  • A user new tty.WriteStream(fd) with no sink still buffers writes after a failed one. Node destroys that stream.
  • Builtin JS grows 825 bytes. Nothing is added per write with a FileSink.
Notes

Reach. No user reported this. It was found by a stdio matrix (every fd kind on fd 0 to 2, bun against node). POSIX only: on Windows the writer cannot fail for fd 1 or 2. A process gets a stream with no FileSink when:

One fixture, three runtimes. process-stdio-no-sink-fixture.mjs fills the fd table, reads process.stdout, frees the table and runs one scenario. It also runs under node. Child stdio is three pipes, fd limit 64:

scenario node 26.3.0 this PR bun 1.4.3
reader gone, 1 write, then 5 from the first 'error' 6 callbacks EPIPE, 2 'error' same 1 callback, 1 'error', 5 writes buffered
write("x"), process.exit(0) reader gets the bytes same reader gets nothing
end("E"), write("late") in the first tick reader gets E same same
write("A"), end("B"), write C on 'finish', write D from the callback of C reader gets AB, D fails with EPIPE reader gets AB, D fails with ERR_STREAM_WRITE_AFTER_END same as this PR

The last row is what a stream with a FileSink does today (process-stdout-write-after-end.test.ts). With autoDestroy always on, the reader gets ABD there.

O_PATH fifo on fd 1 (Linux, the first repro). Node throws Error: open EBADF from the process.stdout getter for this fd, so there is no node reference.

build six writes
release 1.4.3 1 callback EBADF, 5 writes buffered, writableLength 5
debug, main ASSERTION FAILED: underlyingSink, then TypeError: undefined is not an object (evaluating 'process.stdout.on')
this PR 6 callbacks EBADF, 2 'error' events

The buffered writes were also retained. On 1.4.3, 200,000 lines of 201 bytes after one failed write: 0 callbacks, writableLength 40,200,000, RSS +119.7 MiB. With the reset (set by hand on the same release binary): 200,000 callbacks, writableLength 0, RSS +19.0 MiB.

A full non-blocking pipe. On 1.4.3 a 1 MiB write delivers 65,536 bytes and then throws a TypeError inside writeAll (the fs.write callback gets no buffer on EAGAIN, #41440). With this PR all 1,048,576 bytes arrive.

Why the reset is tied to a failed write. Writable keeps one autoDestroy bit for two things: destroy on error (src/js/internal/streams/destroy.ts:203) and destroy on finish (src/js/internal/streams/writable.ts:912). The stdio _destroy calls _undestroy(), which also clears ended. So the bit always on makes end() stop ending the stream. #33618 turned it on for file stdio only and kept pipe and socket stdio ended after end() (#33557). This PR keeps that for a stream with no sink: the _write wrapper sets the bit when a write fails, and _final clears it before 'finish'.

Question for a maintainer. #37128 turns autoDestroy on for every stdio stream and asserts that the stream has a FileSink. If that is the target, the _final step here can go, and this PR is the holding position until then. A failed dup stays possible under #37128 too.

Other designs weighed

  • A stand-in sink object that keeps the stream on the FileSink path (asynchronous writes through a promise chain): it copies the writeFast bypass that console: output goes behind what process.stdout/stderr have buffered, as in Node #37128 removes.
  • A throw from the getter, as node does for an O_PATH fifo: at the fd limit the same state has a working fd, and node has no failure there.
  • No failure from writer() when only the poll registration fails: a failed dup still leaves no sink.

Related PRs

Follow-ups, not in this PR

  • A user new tty.WriteStream(fd) with no sink (the usual state for /dev/tty on macOS) gets the synchronous write from this PR. The buffered writes after a failed one need their own fix: the bit alone would close the fd of the caller, because that stream has no _destroy that keeps the fd.
  • Readable.prototype.pipe builds both stdio streams only to compare identity.
  • FileSink::setup registers a poll for a TTY, although it writes to a TTY synchronously (src/runtime/webcore/FileSink.rs:746). That registration is the step that fails for /dev/tty on macOS.

Test notes

  • The fixture reports stream._type and whether the stream has a sink, and every test asserts both.
  • The later writes start from the first 'error' event. A write made while the first one is in flight fails together with it on every build, so a timer there decides the result by timing.
  • Two tests run on a PTY (Bun.spawn with terminal), so the TTY branch of getStdioWriteStream is covered.
  • The tests are not concurrent. Each starts one bun, and on a debug build one child needs about 2 s of the 5 s timeout.
  • Not run: macOS and Windows.

Cost measurement. Release-mode codegen (bundle-modules.ts --debug=OFF) of the merge base and of this PR: InternalModuleRegistryConstants.bin is 2,628,963 and 2,629,788 bytes.

Runs (debug build, Linux x64)

  • process-stdio-no-sink.test.ts: 12 pass. With bun 1.4.3: 3 pass, 9 fail. The 3 are the end() rows, which pin behavior that does not change.
  • process-stdout-write-after-end.test.ts: 4 pass.
  • test/js/node/test/parallel: the 34 files that match test-stdio-*, test-stdout-*, test-fs-write-stream*, test-fs-syncwritestream, test-console-*-write-error, test-child-process-stdout-flush*, test-pipe-stream, test-util-styletext, test-tty-*: all pass.
  • tsc on src/js: no errors. bun check in test/: no errors in the new files.

…iled write

`Bun.file(fd).writer()` can throw for fd 1 or 2 when `process.stdout` or
`process.stderr` is first read. Its dup fails at the fd limit, or the
event loop cannot poll the fd (macOS /dev/tty, a Linux O_PATH fifo). The
stream then had no FileSink and was a plain thread-pool `fs.WriteStream`:

- A debug build failed `$assert(underlyingSink)` and `process.stdout`
  was `undefined`.
- `_construct` was deferred and writes went to the thread pool, so
`write()` followed by `process.exit()` printed nothing.
- After the first failed write, `Writable` buffered every later write
with no callback, because a pipe, socket or TTY stream is never
  destroyed.

A `$fastPath` stream on an fd that cannot get a writer is now born
constructed and writes with `fs.writeSync`. On EAGAIN it waits for the
reader.

`getStdioWriteStream` no longer asserts a sink. For a stream with no
sink it turns `autoDestroy` on after a failed write, so that the stdio
`_destroy` resets the stream. `_final` turns it off again, so that
`end()` still ends a pipe, socket or TTY stream, as it does with a
FileSink.

POSIX only: on Windows the writer cannot fail for fd 1 or 2.

Status: reproduced on bun 1.4.3-canary.1+367d939d9 (Linux x64) and on a debug build of main.

  • Release: with an O_PATH fifo on fd 1 or 2, or with the reader gone after process.stdout was first read at the fd limit, 1 of 6 write callbacks fires and the other 5 writes stay buffered. At the fd limit, process.stdout.write() followed by process.exit() prints nothing.
  • Debug build of main: reading process.stdout in that state prints [getStdioWriteStream] ASSERTION FAILED: underlyingSink and the property is undefined.

With this branch test/js/node/process/process-stdio-no-sink.test.ts passes (12 tests). bun 1.4.3 fails 9 of them. The fixture also runs under node 26.3.0, and the comparison is in the Notes of the description.

Walkthrough

The change adds a synchronous write fallback for stdio streams when fast-path writer creation fails. It also changes stream error and finalization handling in the no-FileSink case and adds POSIX tests for writes, errors, and stream lifecycle behavior.

Changes

stdio fallback

Layer / File(s) Summary
No-sink stdio write path
src/js/builtins/ProcessObjectInternals.ts, src/js/internal/fs/streams.ts, test/js/node/process/process-stdio-no-sink-fixture.mjs, test/js/node/process/process-stdio-no-sink.test.ts
When fast-path writer creation fails for an existing descriptor, the stream uses synchronous writes and retries EAGAIN. The no-FileSink path adjusts auto-destroy behavior after write errors and during finalization. Tests cover write errors, writes after ending, output before process exit, TTY output, large pipe writes, and Linux FIFO failures.

Wrap _writev so failed batches enable auto-destroy.

A corked or buffered no-FileSink fs.WriteStream uses _writev, which bypasses this _write wrapper. When _writev fails, onwriteError drains the current buffer but errorOrDestroy does not destroy the stream because autoDestroy is still disabled. Later writes are then added to the errored stream's buffer and can remain pending indefinitely.

Guard against a zero-byte writeSync result.

The loop retries EAGAIN with no limit. This is intended. If writeSync returns 0 without an error, offset stays the same. The loop then spins with no sleep. writeAll has the same risk and stops after 5 attempts that write zero bytes. A zero return is uncommon for pipes and files, but some character devices can return it. Treat written === 0 like EAGAIN so the loop sleeps before it retries, or fail after a bounded number of retries.

Proposed fix
     this.bytesWritten += written;
     offset += written;
+    if (written === 0) Bun.sleepSync(1);

🔴 After one failed write on a no-sink pipe/socket stdio stream, end(cb) never calls back and finished()/pipeline() attached afterwards never settle; the base invoked cb with the EPIPE error. The reset runs before the deferred 'error'/'close' emission: the _destroy override calls _undestroy() synchronously (ProcessObjectInternals.ts:80) while emitErrorCloseNT runs next tick and sets errorEmitted and closeEmitted (destroy.ts:126, :146), which needFinish (writable.ts:820) then rejects forever, and autoDestroy stays true so eos waits for a 'close' that never comes. Fix: after a reset, clear errorEmitted/closeEmitted once the deferred events have fired, while keeping end() final.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: a process.stdout/stderr built without a FileSink on a pipe or socket, one write fails, the 'error' handler keeps the process alive and later code calls process.stdout.end(cb) or stream.finished(process.stdout)/pipeline(src, process.stdout). The wrapper at ProcessObjectInternals.ts:100 sets autoDestroy = true; errorOrDestroy (destroy.ts:204) calls destroy, and the override at ProcessObjectInternals.ts:78-80 calls cb(err) then _undestroy() in the same call; onDestroy only schedules emitErrorCloseNT (destroy.ts:104). Next tick emitErrorNT sets kErrorEmitted (destroy.ts:146) and emitCloseNT sets kCloseEmitted unconditionally (destroy.ts:126) on the already-reset state, and nothing clears them again. needFinish (writable.ts:820-834) requires both flags clear, so end() (writable.ts:794-795) never reaches prefinish/finish, and end(cb) parks cb in onFinished (writable.ts:811-813). On the base branch the stream stays errored and not destroyed: end(cb) runs cb with state.errored next tick (writable.ts:806-807).

Verification: ProcessObjectInternals.ts:98-103 sets autoDestroy = true, so errorOrDestroy (destroy.ts:203-204) destroys. The override at ProcessObjectInternals.ts:78-80 runs cb(err) then _undestroy() synchronously; next tick emitErrorCloseNT sets kErrorEmitted (destroy.ts:146) and kCloseEmitted (destroy.ts:126). needFinish (writable.ts:820-835) is then false, so end(cb) never calls back; on the base writable.ts:806-807 delivers cb(EPIPE).

🟡 (optional) A write that the kernel accepts with 0 bytes now pins the process at 100% CPU forever with no error, no callback and no way to interrupt from JS. The while loop at src/js/internal/fs/streams.ts:606-617 only sleeps on EAGAIN; a writeSync that returns 0 for a non-empty buffer leaves offset unchanged and re-issues the same syscall without yielding. The base branch stopped after 5 zero-byte rounds and delivered 'write failed' to the callback (writeAll at :519-521). Fix: treat written === 0 the way writeAll did (count it as a retry, bound the retries, fail the callback with an error) so every exit of the loop invokes cb, and keep that bound on the EAGAIN branch too.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: fs.writeSync at src/js/internal/fs/streams.ts:609 returns 0 for length - offset > 0. node_fs.rs:6176 forwards whatever the kernel returns; a FUSE or network filesystem whose write handler reports 0, an fd 1/2 redirected to such a mount (bun x.js > file on a FUSE volume at the fd limit), or a Windows uv_fs_write that completes with 0 bytes on a pipe handle, all produce this value and none raise an errno. The finder dismissed it by argument only (basis argued) across three ledger entries (L2, L6, L9) without naming a kernel path that forbids a 0 return for special files. When it happens, the loop at :606 re-calls writeSync with the same arguments in a tight spin, never calls cb, never sleeps, and never returns to the event loop, so the process cannot be stopped by a JS signal handler. On the base branch writeAll at :514-521 counted zero-byte rounds and failed the write with new Error('write failed') after 5, so the caller got a callback and the loop kept running. The fix is to bound zero-byte rounds (and total EAGAIN rounds) and route the exhaustion to cb(err).

Verification: Triggering condition: process.stdout/stderr has no FileSink and fs.writeSync returns 0 for a non-empty remainder. Mechanism verified: src/js/internal/fs/streams.ts:606-618 only sleeps inside the EAGAIN catch; written === 0 leaves offset unchanged and re-issues the identical syscall with no retry cap and no callback. The base branch's writeAll at streams.ts:519-521 bounded zero-byte rounds; the diff drops that safeguard on this path.

🟡 (optional) A Bun process whose stdout or stderr has no FileSink freezes its whole event loop whenever the pipe reader is slower than the writer. underscoreWriteSync at src/js/internal/fs/streams.ts:613 answers every EAGAIN with Bun.sleepSync(1) and loops, so timers, sockets, SIGINT handlers and every in-flight request stall until the other process drains the pipe. On the base branch the same write ran on the thread pool and the loop stayed live. Fix: wait for writability without blocking the loop (keep the thread-pool write for non-blocking pipes and sockets, or block in a poll/select on the fd instead of a 1 ms spin), and bound the total wait so a reader that stops reading cannot hang the process forever.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: process.stdout or process.stderr first read while the fd table is full (any server near its ulimit; readable.pipe(dest) at src/js/internal/streams/readable.ts:844 reads both getters), or fd 1/2 replaced with a descriptor the loop cannot poll. Bun.file(fd).writer() throws at src/js/internal/fs/streams.ts:466 and the catch at :467-469 installs underscoreWriteSync for the life of the stream. Every later write() runs the loop at :606-617: on a non-blocking pipe that is full, writeSync throws EAGAIN, the code calls Bun.sleepSync(1) at :613 and retries, and the event loop does not run between attempts. A server that logs to a slow pipe reader stops serving every connection until the reader catches up; if the reader never reads but keeps the pipe open the process spins forever and SIGINT handlers in JS never run. Base: writeAll at :500-527 used the async thread pool, retried EAGAIN five times and errored, so the loop kept running and the failure surfaced as a callback error.

Verification: Acknowledged in diff: the PR description lists the blocking under Downsides; the author's note is accurate but it bounds nothing: the wait is unbounded. underscoreWriteSync (src/js/internal/fs/streams.ts:603-620) runs on the JS thread; on a non-blocking fd a full pipe makes writeSync throw EAGAIN and the loop does Bun.sleepSync(1); continue; (:611-614) with no upper bound, so nothing on the event loop runs until the peer drains the pipe.

🟡 nit (optional): maintainers get no test guarding the _final override, so it can be deleted or broken without any of the 12 new tests failing. It is only reached when end() runs between the failed write's destroy/_undestroy and the next tick's 'error' emit (e.g. an await in the write callback), since once 'error'/'close' have been emitted needFinish is false and _final never runs; every new scenario either never fails a write or never calls end(). Fix: add a fixture scenario that fails a write, then calls end() from a microtask in that write's callback and writes twice more, asserting 'finish' fires, both later callbacks get ERR_STREAM_WRITE_AFTER_END and writableEnded stays true; that fails when src/js/builtins/ProcessObjectInternals.ts:104 is removed.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: process.stdout on a pipe with no FileSink, a write fails (EPIPE), its callback does await x; stream.end(). In src/js/internal/streams/writable.ts:549-559 onwriteError runs the callback, then errorOrDestroy destroys the stream; the stdio _destroy at src/js/builtins/ProcessObjectInternals.ts:78 calls _undestroy() synchronously, so the microtask's end() reaches prefinish and calls the overridden _final at src/js/builtins/ProcessObjectInternals.ts:104, which is what keeps autoDestroy off so finish() at src/js/internal/streams/writable.ts:912 does not destroy and un-end the stream. If end() is called any later, kErrorEmitted/kCloseEmitted make needFinish false, so _final is never invoked. None of the scenarios in test/js/node/process/process-stdio-no-sink-fixture.mjs combine a failed write with end(). Deleting lines 104-107 therefore leaves all 12 tests passing; REVIEW.md asks that each load-bearing clause be shown to break a test. Base branch: no comparison, this is new code.

Verification: nit. Triggering condition: a maintainer deletes or breaks the _final override at src/js/builtins/ProcessObjectInternals.ts:104-107 — the new test file passes unchanged, so the clause is load-bearing but unguarded. No test covers that window: failed-writes never calls end(); end-then-write and end-in-first-tick never fail a write. Deleting lines 104-107 leaves all 12 tests passing.

🟡 nit (optional): the 1 MiB EAGAIN test can pass without exercising the new sync write path, so a regression in underscoreWriteSync would go unnoticed. Unlike every other test in this file, the script at test/js/node/process/process-stdio-no-sink.test.ts:172 never reports whether process.stdout got a FileSink; if the fd fill does not exhaust the table, the stream writes through the FileSink and the assertions at lines 196-198 still hold. Fix: have the script report the kWriteStreamFastPath probe (as the fixture does) and assert sink === false, so the test proves the EAGAIN loop at src/js/internal/fs/streams.ts:611 ran. [also at: test/js/node/process/process-stdio-no-sink.test.ts:184 - nit: the exit code this test asserts cannot fail, so a maintainer loses the signal process.exit(writer ? 0 : 1) appears to provide.]

Why this was flagged

The test at test/js/node/process/process-stdio-no-sink.test.ts:169 is meant to cover the EAGAIN branch of underscoreWriteSync (src/js/internal/fs/streams.ts:611-614). Its inline script fills the fd table and reads process.stdout, but reports nothing about whether Bun.file(1).writer() actually threw; it only exits 0 if the earlier writer exists. If the precondition is not met (ulimit not applied, fd fill ending early, or a future change making writer() succeed at the limit), process.stdout gets a FileSink and the 1 MiB write is delivered by the FileSink, so expect(stdout.length).toBe(size) at line 203 passes without the new code running. The other tests in this file assert sink: false via the fixture report, so only this test lacks the precondition check the repository review guidance asks for.

Verification: nit. Triggering condition: whenever the inline script's fd fill fails to make Bun.file(1).writer() throw, the test still passes while exercising only the FileSink path. The inline script at test/js/node/process/process-stdio-no-sink.test.ts:169-182 creates const writer = Bun.file(1).writer(); BEFORE filling the fd table, so process.exit(writer ? 0 : 1) (line 181) is always 0.
