Problem

  • util.parseArgs() without args drops the first program argument under --eval=<code> and -pe <code>: bun --eval=<code> zzz yyy returns ["yyy"].
  • bun run -e <code> ./file.js zzz returns the script path as a positional.
  • Cause: get_default_args (src/runtime/node/util/parse_args.rs:186) picks the start from the exact process.execArgv tokens -e, --eval, -p, --print. Hardening: fix crashes across the runtime, bundler, dev server, shell and CLI #46021 took the crash fix of this PR, a clamp of the start. This is the other half.

Fix

  • A per-VM flag, has_eval_string, picks the start, as Node's getMainArgs does since util: fix parseArgs skipping first positional arg with --eval= and --… nodejs/node#60814. It is set when -e/-p code is the program. A Worker inherits it, or reads its own execArgv.
  • That read and process.execArgv share one classifier of bun's flags, arguments::takes_value.
  • Verified: test/js/node/util/parse_args/parse-args-default-args.test.ts (44 of 96 fail on main), plus the vendored test-parse-args.mjs.
  • Self-reviewed twice: 37 concerns raised, 35 addressed. The other two are older bugs (Notes).

Background

  • Under eval, process.argv has no script entry, so arguments start at index 1.
  • A Worker is its own VM, and Node keeps --eval per thread.
  • Considered more tokens in the process.execArgv scan: bun run -e <code> file.js still returns the script path.

Downsides

  • A reassigned process.execArgv no longer moves the start. A strict parseArgs() can then see one more argument and throw.
  • A Worker with its own execArgv follows Node: ["x", "-e", "1"] slices at 2. It sliced at 1.
  • A Worker's own execArgv costs up to 1,700 instructions per flag at creation. No new allocation (Notes).
Notes

What main has, and what this adds

Node reference (v26.3.0)

  • getMainArgs: parse_args.js#L58-L67. It slices process.argv at 1 when --eval has a value, else at 2, and a slice clamps.
  • --eval is a per-thread option in Node. A Worker gets the value of the thread that made it, or the one in its own execArgv. -p alone only prints: node_options.cc#L1171-L1174.
  • Node's option parser reads a Worker's execArgv from left to right. A flag that takes a value takes the next token, and --eval also takes an empty one. The parser stops at the first token that is not a flag and not a value, at a lone -, and at --.
  • Node reads --print=<x> as --print and does not use <x>. It rejects -e=<x>, -p=<x>, an empty --eval=, and a value that starts with -.
  • Precedent here: fix test-parse-args.mjs #19308 ported the default-args logic, and Upgrade reported Node.js version to 26.3.0 #31991 set the reported Node version to 26.3.0.

The flag

  • VirtualMachine::has_eval_string is false in a new VM. boot() sets it on the main thread when the entry point is [eval] and the code is not empty. So bun run -e <code> file.js, which runs the file, and bun --interactive -e '' do not set it.
  • WebWorker::create takes the flag of the VM that makes the Worker, or the answer of the walk when the Worker has its own execArgv.

A Worker's own execArgv

  • The rule: where Node accepts the array, the walk gives Node's answer. Where Node rejects it, the walk reads it as bun's CLI does.
  • exec_argv_has_eval_string reads the tokens from left to right. It stops at --, and at a token that is not a flag and not a value. A lone - is not a flag.
  • -e, --eval and -pe take the next token as the code, also when it starts with -. --eval=, -e= and -p= have the code after the =. An empty code, or no code, means that --eval has no value. The last eval flag wins.
  • -p, --print and --print=<x> take the next token as the code unless it is empty, -, --, or an option in bun's CLI table (AUTO_PARAMS). Before such a token the print flag only prints.
  • A flag with = has its value. For another flag, the walk asks the table through arguments::takes_value. If the flag takes no separate value, the next token that is not a flag ends the flags. If the flag takes one, or the table does not have the flag, that token is its value.
  • Node's table is not in bun. So the walk differs from Node where a flag that only Node knows is before a token that is not a flag. The cases are under "Not in this change".

One classifier for the flags of bun

  • arguments::takes_value(name) says if a flag has its value in the next argument. It is built on values_of, the lookup in AUTO_PARAMS that script_or_command.rs had. That function moved next to the table.
  • create_exec_argv, which makes process.execArgv, had its own set of such flags (a LazyLock<StringSet> made from the same table). It now calls takes_value, and the set is gone. The two give the same answer for the 514 names that were compared: each name in the table, with =v, with one more letter, and tokens that are not flags.
  • So the code that writes process.execArgv and the walk that reads a Worker's execArgv use one function.

Verified

  • parse-args-default-args.test.ts on this commit: 96 pass on a release build. A debug build runs 94 and they pass. The 2 --interactive rows do not run there.
  • A release build of main 9b4284f with this test file: 44 fail and 52 pass. The 44: eval code with --eval=, -e=, -p=, --print= or -pe and program arguments (10), bun run -e <code> <file>, --interactive -e '', a Worker with its own execArgv (27 of 44 rows), a Worker under --eval=<code> and under -pe <code>, the 2 rows with a Worker that a Worker made, and the row with a reassigned process.execArgv.
  • No control row fails on either side: -e, --eval, -p, --print, stdin, a file, a short process.argv, a Worker without execArgv.
  • Vendored test-parse-args.mjs, run as CI runs it: 115 pass, 2 todo, 0 fail.
  • parse-args.test.mjs, parse-args-null-config.test.ts, parse-args-token-key-order.test.ts: 121 pass on a release build. A debug build has 120 pass and 1 fail. The failure is stress test > 100 mixed several times. It needs 11 to 14 s in a debug build and the limit is 5 s, with and without this change.
  • On release builds of this commit and of main, with the same counts on both: disallow-code-generation-from-strings.test.ts (34 pass, 4 skip), no-addons.test.ts (2 pass), worker.test.ts (43 pass), worker_threads.test.ts (161 pass), process.test.js (195 pass, 5 skip), cc.test.ts (44 pass, 9 skip), compile-process-execargv.test.ts (2 pass), compile-argv.test.ts (15 pass), lint/help.test.ts (361 pass, 54 skip), lint/bunfig.test.ts (406 pass).
  • format.test.ts and check.test.ts use the lookup that moved. On this machine some of their tests go over the 5 second limit with both builds: 31 and 24 of 1,672, and 15 and 16 of 842, in one run of each (this commit and main).

Node v26.3.0 on the launches of the new test

  • Node returns the expected value in 69 of the 69 launches that it accepts: 18 eval launches (-e, --eval, --eval=, -p, --print, -pe), node - zzz yyy, node -e with code that empties process.argv, the script that shortens process.argv, the 2 node -i launches, and 46 Worker rows with worker_threads in place of the Web Worker (38 with their own execArgv, 6 programs, 2 made by a Worker).
  • 15 rows are spellings that only bun has: 9 eval launches (-e=<code>, -p=<code>, --print=<code>), and 6 Worker rows that Node rejects (-e=1, -p=1, an empty --eval=, a code that starts with - after -e and after -p, and an eval flag without a code).
  • The row with a reassigned process.execArgv returns the same value in Node.
  • No Node value: bun repl, bun as node, bun run -e <code> <file>, and the 8 file launches that came from default-args.test.mjs.
  • A Worker made by a Worker, in Node: without execArgv it has the value of the Worker that made it. Both shapes are rows.

Wider checks of a Worker's own execArgv
Each array went to a worker_threads Worker in Node v26.3.0, and in release builds of this commit and of main.

  • 789 arrays made of 28 flag units, alone and in ordered pairs, plus 8 triples. Node accepts 787. This change has Node's slice for 783, and main for 476. The other 4 have a print flag before a flag that only Node knows, such as ["-p", "-C", "foo"].
  • 415 arrays made of 17 units, 159 of them with a lone -. Node accepts all. This change has Node's slice for 411, and main for 251. The other 4 have --enable-source-maps, which only Node knows, after a print flag or before a lone -.
  • 1,432 arrays made of 16 units with --print=1 and --print=: alone, in ordered pairs, and in triples. Node accepts all. This change has Node's slice for all 1,432, and main for 759.
  • 3,663 arrays from the second review: 407 flag names of Node and of bun, each alone, before -e 1, and before one of 7 tokens and -e 1. Node accepts 2,115. This change has Node's slice for 930, and main for 711. In 1,183 of the other 1,185, a flag that only Node knows, and that takes no value there, is before a token that is not a flag. The last 2 are --prof-process and --no-prof-process before -e 1.
  • In these four sets, no array has Node's slice on main and another slice here.

Cost of this change
Measured on release builds of this commit and of its base (main 9b4284f), built on one machine.

  • .text: 81,904,485 B on main, 81,903,717 B here (768 B less). The stripped binary has the same file size (107,497,184 B).
  • Default args with 16 program arguments, per call: 6 mi_malloc, 6 mi_free, 16 JSC__JSObject__getIndex, 1 Bun__Process__getArgv, in both builds. Bun__Process__getExecArgv: 1 on main, 0 here. The function is gone.
  • Instructions of one call with default args and 16 program arguments: 10,523 on main, 10,303 here (220 fewer).
  • Explicit args: the source of this path is as on main. Per call with 16 positionals: 5 mi_malloc, 5 mi_free, 16 JSC__JSObject__getIndex, in both builds. Instructions of one call with 0, 16 and 64 positionals: 5,203 and 5,231, 11,110 and 11,100, 29,119 and 29,013 (main and here). The default-args code is compiled into the same function, so the compiler's output for this path moves too: 28 more, 10 fewer and 106 fewer.
  • VirtualMachine is 32,320 B in both builds (mi_zalloc_aligned(32320, 64)).
  • A Worker without execArgv: the same 96 allocations inside WebWorker__create in both builds, with the same sizes.
  • A Worker with execArgv: ["--eval", <code of 65,541 bytes>]: the same 102 allocations in both builds. The code is copied once, by the scan for the process flags, as on main. The new walk reads the length and the first character of a token in place, borrows the bytes of an ASCII flag, and converts a flag that is not ASCII.
  • Instructions inside parse_worker_exec_argv_flags, which runs once for a Worker that has its own execArgv (main and here): [] 33 and 53, ["--eval", "1"] 1,029 and 1,236, ["-r", "node:path"] 1,047 and 1,311, ["--max-old-space-size=4096"] 669 and 1,070, ["--no-addons"] 620 and 1,891, ["--enable-source-maps"] 659 and 2,359. A flag without = that is not an eval flag costs one lookup in bun's CLI table: up to 1,700 instructions, for a flag that is not in it. A Worker that starts, posts one message and ends costs about 5 million instructions in both builds.
  • The first read of process.execArgv under bun -r ./pre.js --conditions x --smol print.js a b: 28,446 instructions and 125 allocations (5,406 B) on main, 6,315 instructions and 12 allocations (1,129 B) here, for the same array. The set of flags is not built now. Without a flag before the script: 3,414 instructions and 7 allocations in both builds.
  • Method: the call counts are gdb breakpoint hit counts over a whole run, as the difference between 3,000 and 1,000 calls, with the JIT off. The instruction counts are single steps (stepi) in gdb on the stripped binary, from the first instruction of a function to its return, with the JIT off. For a parseArgs call that is the native function, for 30 calls in a row (calls 50 to 79 of a loop). 25 or more of the 30 have the count that is given, and the others take a slow path of the allocator in both builds. The allocation counts of a Worker and of process.execArgv are the allocator calls of one thread inside one function. The count for a whole Worker is perf_event_open user instructions, as the difference between 60 and 20 Workers. valgrind, perf, bloaty and strace are not installed here.

Behaviour changes

  • Eval code is the program and the flag is --eval=<code>, -e=<code>, -p=<code>, --print=<code> or -pe <code>: parseArgs() keeps the first program argument.
  • A file, stdin or a compiled executable is the program while -e/-p is in process.execArgv: bun run -e <code> ./file.js zzz, BUN_OPTIONS='-e 1' ./app zzz, bun - -e 1. parseArgs() there returned the script path as a positional. It now returns the program arguments.
  • A Worker without execArgv has the flag of the thread that made it, and not what the tokens of the process's process.execArgv say.
  • A Worker with its own execArgv: --eval=<code>, -pe <code>, a bare -p, an empty --eval value, an eval flag after -- or after a token that is not a flag now give the slice that Node gives.
  • bun --interactive -e '': parseArgs() in the REPL slices at 2, as in node -i -e ''. It sliced at 1.
  • bun as node with --port <code>, an old spelling that runs the code: the same slice as -p <code>.
  • A program that assigns to process.execArgv no longer moves the start (Downsides).

Self-review

  • The first review of the diff raised 17 concerns. Two skeptics checked each one. 8 held, and all 8 are fixed.
  • A Worker's own execArgv: an eval flag after another flag's value, or after the code of an earlier eval flag, was not read, and main read it (2 concerns). The eval flags now have their own walk.
  • -p before an empty token cleared an earlier --eval=<code>, and a code of U+0000 counted as empty. Fixed in the walk.
  • No test covered a print flag followed by a flag. --interactive -e '' set the flag. No test would fail without Eval.provided, so the field is gone. A two-line comment is now one line. The code of an eval flag was copied to read one byte.
  • 9 concerns did not hold: each is the same on main, or is about wording. 8 of them still led to an edit.
  • The last one is a crash that main also has. An args element whose toString() returns a different string on its second call makes parseArgs panic (called Option::unwrap() on a None value). It is not part of this change.
  • The second review read the walk and takes_value, which were new after the first one. It raised 20 concerns, and 19 led to a change.
  • --print=<x> in a Worker's own execArgv was read as code. Node reads it as --print, and main agreed with Node there (5 concerns). The walk now reads it as Node does.
  • takes_value was a third copy of one lookup (3 concerns). It now shares values_of, and create_exec_argv shares takes_value.
  • Clauses of the walk and of takes_value had no test row, and no row had a 16-bit token (10 concerns). The table went from 25 to 44 rows. A model of the walk in JS gives the answer of a release build for 2,970 arrays. In that model, each clause that is forced to true or to false fails a row, but for 7. Of those, 4 are not a change that the Rust code can have or give the same answer, 2 are the choice between the 8-bit and the 16-bit read (a debug build asserts on the wrong one), and one matters only for -pe=<x>, which the walk does not read.
  • Two comments described an older version of the walk (1 concern). Fixed.
  • The one that is not changed here: a Worker without execArgv that a Worker made reports the process.execArgv of the process, and not of the Worker that made it. Main has this too (see below).
  • After Hardening: fix crashes across the runtime, bundler, dev server, shell and CLI #46021, the slice type and the explicit args path are as on main. An earlier version of this PR gave the slice a constructor that clamps. Main clamps in get_default_args, and that is kept.

The vendored test

  • test/js/node/test/parallel/test-parse-args.mjs is identical to Node v26.3.0 except three lines in one loop, marked // BUN:. They make the two --print --eval rows todo. Bun's --print takes the code as its value, so bun --print --eval 1+1 runs the text --eval and fails with error: Invalid assignment target. That is a CLI grammar difference and not part of this change.
  • The directory's guide says these files are not modified. The same kind of marked deviation exists in test-sqlite.js and test-repl-*.js. Say so if you want a different shape.
  • The old copy needs a reassigned process.execArgv to move the start. Node v26.3.0 fails 4 of its 113 tests for that reason.
  • New fixture from Node: test/js/node/test/fixtures/parse-args.js.

Tests

  • One file holds the default-args tests: parse-args-default-args.test.ts.
  • A launch with no program arguments makes the strict call first and stops if it throws.
  • 51 tests start a bun process, one at a time. The 44 rows for a Worker's own execArgv make the Worker in the test process: the Worker's own execArgv decides there, and not the program.
  • A release build runs the 96 tests in about 3 s, and the slowest test of three runs took 0.9 s. A debug build takes 61 s for 94 tests. The median there is 0.4 s for a Worker in the test process and 0.7 s for a test that starts a process. The slowest test took 1.8 s, and 3.1 s in an earlier run.
  • The two --interactive rows do not run in a debug build: node:repl takes 4 seconds to start there, and the limit of a test is 5. On a release build they take about 0.1 s each.
  • An earlier 46-test version with twenty processes at once took 16 to 19 s in a debug build, and its slowest test took 3.0 to 3.7 s of the 5 second limit.
  • bun:test stops the child process of a test that times out only when the test is not concurrent.

Deleted

  • get_exec_argv (Rust) and Bun__Process__getExecArgv (C++): get_default_args was their only caller.
  • The set of flags in create_exec_argv.
  • default-args.test.mjs and its entry in test/expected-durations.json.

Status: ready for review

#46021 took the crash fix of this PR (a clamp of the start in get_default_args). The branch has main merged in, and this PR is now the other half: where the default args start.

How it is reproduced, on a release build of main 9b4284f:

bun --eval='console.log(JSON.stringify(require("node:util").parseArgs({ strict: false }).positionals))' zzz yyy
  • Main prints ["yyy"]. Node v26.3.0 and this branch print ["zzz","yyy"].
  • bun run -e 0 ./file.js zzz yyy, where file.js prints the same: main has the path of file.js as the first positional. This branch prints ["zzz","yyy"].
  • test/js/node/util/parse_args/parse-args-default-args.test.ts: 44 of 96 tests fail on main, and 96 pass on this branch.

The self-review and the release measurements against main are in the description (Notes).

@robobun robobun changed the title util.parseArgs: port Node v26's getMainArgs and tokenize an owned copy of the args util.parseArgs: pick the default args start from a per-VM eval flag, as Node v26 does Oct 17, 2026
@robobun
robobun force-pushed the robobun/dc579c18/parse-args-default-args branch 3 times, most recently from ca4e1cf to 4e420d4 Compare October 19, 2026 01:35
The start of the default args came from a scan of process.execArgv for
the exact tokens -e, --eval, -p and --print, and the tokenizer counted
its arguments as end - start in u32. With --eval=<code>, -pe <code>,
bun repl, or a process.argv shorter than the start, the count wrapped
and parseArgs did not return. With program arguments, the first one
was dropped.

The start now comes from a per-VM flag that is set when eval code is
the main program, in any spelling, as getOptionValue('--eval') is in
Node since nodejs/node#60814. A Worker inherits it, or takes it from
its own execArgv. ArgsSlice::new is the one place that makes a view of
the arguments, and it keeps start <= end, so the count cannot wrap.
The eval flags of a Worker's own execArgv were read inside the scan that
stops at the first token that is not a flag. An eval flag after another
flag's value, or after the code of an earlier eval flag, was not seen.
A separate walk now reads them: a token after a flag can be that flag's
value, an eval flag takes the next token as its code, and -p takes it
only when it is not empty. The code token is not copied.

The per-VM flag now comes from the [eval] entry point and the
interactive script, so Eval.provided is gone. Under --interactive an
empty -e value is no eval, as in Node.

Walkthrough

Changes

Eval-state detection and propagation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect and propagate eval-string state
src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs, src/jsc/web_worker.rs, src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs, src/runtime/cli/run_command.rs
The VM and worker state now records whether a non-empty evaluation or print string is present. Worker initialization inherits or parses this value. CLI startup excludes empty interactive input.
Select the default argument boundary
src/runtime/node/util/parse_args.rs, src/runtime/node/node_process.rs, src/jsc/bindings/BunProcess.cpp
ArgsSlice now provides bounded construction, length, and indexed access. get_default_args starts at index 1 when the VM has an eval string and at index 2 otherwise. The getExecArgv binding and wrapper were removed.
Validate parseArgs modes and workers
test/js/node/test/fixtures/parse-args.js, test/js/node/test/parallel/test-parse-args.mjs, test/js/node/util/parse_args/parse-args-default-args.test.ts, test/js/node/util/parse_args/default-args.test.mjs
Tests now cover evaluation and print modes, file and stdin execution, REPL and interactive input, workers, and independence from process.execArgv. The former default-arguments suite was removed.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, a few things were checked and ruled out: the deleted Bun__Process__getExecArgv / get_exec_argv have no remaining callers in src/; VirtualMachine is alloc_zeroed, so has_eval_string is false on every path that does not go through the eval branch in run_command.rs (bun test, standalone binaries, no-execArgv entry); and ArgsSlice::new clamps start to the array length, so the end - start underflow in tokenize_args is closed for both the default-args and explicit-args (start 0) paths. The reassigned-process.execArgv behavior change is intentional and matches Node's getMainArgs, which also reads the option value rather than the live array.

Extended reasoning...

The change replaces a live scan of process.execArgv in util.parseArgs with a per-VM has_eval_string flag set from the main-thread eval entry and from a new Worker execArgv token walk, and privatizes ArgsSlice behind a clamping constructor; it touches no security-sensitive surface. The inline findings already signal that a human should look, so this note only records what else was examined.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟣 src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs — pre-existing: a Worker given execArgv: ['--require', './x.js', '--no-addons'] still loads native addons, while the new eval walk in the same function reads past './x.js'. The older loop at src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:1584-1586 breaks at the first token without a leading '-', so a value of an earlier flag hides every later --no-addons, --no-ffi-cc and --disallow-code-generation-from-strings. Fix: one tokenizer for the Worker's execArgv that knows which flags take a value (the rule exec_argv_has_eval_string already applies at src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:1647) and feeds all four flags, so both scans agree on where the flags end.

    Why this was flagged

A parent calls new Worker('./w.js', { execArgv: ['-r', './preload.js', '--no-addons'] }). C++ hands the tokens to parse_worker_exec_argv_flags at src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:1563. The loop at src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:1577-1600 reads -r, then ./preload.js, whose first byte is not '-', and breaks at src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:1585, so flags.allow_addons stays true and flags.invalid stays None. The worker's transform_options.allow_addons at src/jsc/web_worker.rs:381 therefore stays allowed and process.dlopen works in the worker; Node applies --no-addons there and rejects the --disallow-code-generation-from-strings form with ERR_WORKER_INVALID_EXEC_ARGV. The diff adds exec_argv_has_eval_string at src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:1605, which for the same tokens treats ./preload.js as the value of -r (src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:1647) and keeps walking, so the two scans in one function now disagree about where the flags end. The base branch has the same addons gap.

Verification: pre-existing: the defective loop is byte-identical on the base commit. Trigger: new Worker(f, { execArgv: ['-r', './preload.js', '--no-addons'] }). At src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:1584-1586 ./preload.js has no leading -, so if bytes.first() != Some(&b'-') { break; } exits the loop and --no-addons is never seen; flags.allow_addons stays true, and src/jsc/web_worker.rs:380-383 keeps addons enabled.

The walk of a Worker's execArgv knows that --no-addons, --no-ffi-cc and
--disallow-code-generation-from-strings take no value, so a token after
one of them ends the flags, as in Node. An eval flag takes the next
token as its code also when that token starts with a dash, as bun's CLI
does. Node rejects such a token.

The launches of default-args.test.mjs are now in
parse-args-default-args.test.ts, so one file holds the default-args
tests. New rows cover the = spellings in a Worker's own execArgv, a
flag with = before a stray token, and a Worker made by a Worker. The
--interactive rows have no time limit of their own and do not run in a
debug build, where node:repl takes 4 seconds to start.

Review follow-up, pushed as ebbe332.

Changed:

  • The walk of a Worker's execArgv knows that --no-addons, --no-ffi-cc and --disallow-code-generation-from-strings take no value. ["--no-addons","x","-e","1"] now slices at 2, as in Node.
  • -e, --eval and -pe take the next token as the code also when it starts with -, as bun's CLI does.
  • The launches of default-args.test.mjs moved into parse-args-default-args.test.ts, so one file holds the default-args tests.
  • New rows: the = spellings in a Worker's own execArgv, a flag with = before a stray token, and a Worker made by a Worker.
  • The --interactive rows have no time limit of their own. They do not run in a debug build.

Not changed, with the reason in each thread: -p before a code that starts with -, the serial layout, and cron mode.

The finding outside the diff is correct, and main has it too: a value token hides a later --no-addons. One walk for all four flags changes when --no-addons and --no-ffi-cc apply, and it makes the Worker constructor throw for a --disallow-code-generation-from-strings that it does not see today. That is a behaviour change with its own tests, so it is not in this PR. The description lists it under "Not in this change".

Code review completed

Nothing new to post: everything this review found is already covered by existing comments on this pull request or didn't merit a separate one.

Still open from earlier reviews (3):

  • Unresolved: 3 minor or pre-existing.

…table

The walk had three flags hard-coded as taking no value. It now asks
AUTO_PARAMS through arguments::takes_value. A flag that bun knows and
that takes no separate value ends the flags at the next token. A flag
that bun does not know can take the next token as its value.

A -p takes the next token as its code unless that token is an option
that bun knows. So bun -p '-1' gives the same slice in a Worker that is
given process.execArgv as in a Worker that inherits it, and -p before
--no-addons still only prints, as in Node.

… and CLI (#46021)

### What does this PR do?

Hardening. This collects the open pull requests that fix a crash in Bun
into one change, and fixes about 20 more crashes that had no pull
request.

"Crash" here means a segfault, a Rust panic, an abort, a failed
assertion, memory corruption that a sanitizer reports, a native stack
overflow, or an exception that ends the process and that the program
can't catch. With this PR those cases throw a normal error, print a
normal CLI error and exit 1, or just work.

306 pull requests are included: 227 whole, and 79 cut down to the crash
fix where the rest was a refactor, a feature or a behavior change. Each
one was checked against current `main` first. 45 more turned out to be
fixed already, and 17 were duplicates. The full list is at the bottom.

#### Crashes you could hit in normal use

- **`bun build` with macros and a `.env` file crashed at random.** In a
repro with many macro modules, more than a third of the builds crashed.
Now 3,000 of 3,000 produce the right bundle. (#45960)
- **`bun run` and `bunx` aborted if a signal arrived while the child was
being spawned.** (#38926, #45965)
- **`bun build --compile ./index.js ./public/*` panicked** if an
embedded file's name wasn't valid UTF-8.
- **A truncated or corrupted compiled executable** died with SIGBUS or a
panic at startup. It now prints an error. (#31787, #38251, #41360)
- **Dev server:** several `Option::unwrap()` panics after a failed or
deleted import (#38046, #44744, #44746), a segfault when an `onLoad`
plugin throws while another bundle is queued, a request that hung and
then panicked with `bundle active`, and `server.stop()` that never
resolved after a client aborted a waiting request.
- **`Bun.serve`:** `server.fetch(url, { headers: new Headers() })`
followed by a GC segfaulted (#40888). Routes were used after free after
`server.reload()` with `tls.serverName` (#38636).
- **`text()` and `json()` on a stream of string chunks** could abort the
process, a regression in 1.4.0. (#44269)
- **`Bun.Transpiler` with `exports.eliminate` or `exports.replace`**
aborted on `export default 1` and on most re-export clauses. (#44137)
- **A decorated `declare` field in a class expression** with
`experimentalDecorators` panicked. (#38095)
- **YAML and JSON5 files with a key that isn't a string** panicked with
`--no-bundle` and in `Bun.Transpiler`. (#41827)
- **`Bun.FileSystemRouter`:** reading `.params` segfaulted when a
rejected route candidate left its parameters behind. (#39290, #39291)
- **Native addons that call `uv_async_*`, `uv_timer_*`, `uv_idle_*`,
`uv_prepare_*`, `uv_check_*`, `uv_queue_work` or `uv_cwd`** aborted with
"unsupported uv function" on Linux and macOS. They're implemented now.
(#36609, #39652, #39892)
- **`--watch` and `--hot`** panicked when the system was out of inotify
instances or file descriptors, or when the reload `exec` failed. They
print an error now. (#39629, #39975, #44837)
- **Paths longer than the path buffer** panicked in `bun install`, the
resolver, the bundler, `--compile`, `tsconfig.json` `paths` and
`baseUrl`, `package.json` `main` and `sideEffects`, `bun run --filter`,
`bun pm diff`, source maps and snapshots. They're ordinary errors now,
or they work. (#36340, #37529, #39104, #39650, #43067)
- **A Worker that creates a `ShadowRealm` and imports
`node:worker_threads` in it** segfaulted.
- **`structuredClone` or `postMessage` of an X25519 key** gave an object
that aborted the process when read. (#45624)
- **`node:stream` web adapters and `node:http2`** could end the process
with an exception that no handler could catch. (#45076, #45975)
- **Windows:** a watcher panic in a burst of file changes (#44344), a
segfault after the machine resumes from sleep (#33015), crashes in the
shell's pipe reader (#39638, #43606), and addons that import from
`node.exe` without the delay-load hook (#35618).

Most of the rest needs unusual input: strings near the 2 GiB limit,
buffers that another thread or a getter resizes or detaches in the
middle of a call, `worker.terminate()` at a bad moment, running out of
memory or file descriptors, very deep nesting, or hostile arguments to
`bun:ffi`, `node:vm` and `bun:sqlite`.

#### Behavior changes

Things that didn't crash before and behave differently now:

- `new` on native functions that aren't constructors throws a
`TypeError`, as in Node: `util.types.*`, `buffer.isAscii`, `isUtf8`,
`transcode`, `resolveObjectURL`, `bun:jsc` exports, `cc()` symbols. It
used to return the call's result. They also stop printing as `[class
hostname]`. (#34575)
- `` $`cmd` `` throws `ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE` if an environment
variable's name or value contains a NUL byte. It used to cut the value
at the NUL. (#44981)
- `cc()` functions throw a `TypeError` for arguments that used to reach
C as garbage, and `read.*(ptr, NaN)` throws. (#37989, #38057, #40773)
- As PID 1, `bun` exits with 128 + the signal number on Ctrl+C or
`docker stop`. (#38877)
- A `NODE_MODULE` addon that's already loaded by the main thread throws
`ERR_DLOPEN_FAILED` when a live Worker loads it too, as in Node.
(#39968)
- An exception from a `node:vm` context reaches `uncaughtException`
handlers. (#39992) `vm.constants.DONT_CONTEXTIFY` returns the real
global proxy. (#34623)
- `createPrivateKey` rejects an EC JWK whose private value doesn't match
its public point. (#33752)
- `@dec static {}` is a syntax error, as in TypeScript and esbuild.
(#44883)
- `clearTimeout` ignores 0 and negative ids, and timer ids no longer
wrap. (#44771)
- HEAD for a `Response` whose body is an S3-backed `Blob` reports the
length that GET sends. (#44734)
- `bun:sqlite` and `node:sqlite`: if `iterate()` left a write unfinished
on a connection that has a hook, a user function or an authorizer, the
write is finished on the connection's next call instead of during
garbage collection. If the database is gone too, it's rolled back.
- `bun test --bail` runs exit listeners and closes SQLite databases.
(#39010)
- Dev server: a request for a client script waits while a bundle is in
flight (#42733), query strings reach framework routes (#33232), and a
request gets a 500 instead of hanging when plugins fail (#36812).

#### File formats

- `.jsc` bytecode files get a 24-byte footer so they can be verified
before decoding. Files from an older Bun are ignored and the source is
parsed instead. (#39396)
- `node:vm` `cachedData` gets an 8-byte checksum. A blob from an older
Bun is rejected, which the API allows. (#32839)
- The built-in modules section of a compiled executable changes from
format 1 to 2 and carries an engine stamp. (#44907)

#### Performance

Measured in instructions per operation on release builds of this branch
and its base, with an A/A run for the noise floor (0.0 to 0.2 %).

No change: `Bun.serve`, `node:http`, WebSocket echo and publish, `bun
build` of 3,807 modules, `bun run` with 2,000 imports, `readdir` /
`Glob` / `fs.cp` over 23,689 entries, startup and RSS. The binary grows
by 176 KB (0.17 %).

| Faster | Instructions |
| --- | --- |
| WebSocket echo of a 1 MB non-ASCII text message | −72 % |
| `Bun.inspect` of a large non-ASCII string | −39 % |
| `Bun.markdown.html` on large non-ASCII input | −33 % |
| `` $`cmd` `` with 300 environment variables | −6 % |
| `fs.readSync` | −5 % |
| `TextEncoder.encodeInto`, short ASCII strings | −4 % |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, 16-byte inputs | −17 % |

| Slower | Instructions | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `cc()` calls | +5 to +51 per call | Argument count and type checks,
and a check for `close()` (#37989, #38057, #43802, #44921). `dlopen()`
calls don't change |
| `process.env.X = v` | 38 → 593 per write | Writes aren't cached. Reads
don't change (#38871) |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, inputs of 1 KB or more | +4 to +9 % | Password
and salt are copied (#40554) |
| `bun build` with an object `--define` used thousands of times | +4.5 %
| The object is copied per use (#45969) |

#### Not included

- Fixes that need a WebKit change: #39967, #42534, #42982, #43764,
#43786, #44226. #42185 too: a typed array that has no `ArrayBuffer` yet
can't be pinned, so `view.buffer.transfer()` during an async call can
still free its bytes. Creating the `ArrayBuffer` up front costs 7 to 12
% on every async `fs` call, so the fix belongs in JSC: an `ArrayBuffer`
created while the view is borrowed should start out pinned.
- #45442 (`calc()` sums as a flat list): it changes minified output for
real stylesheets to survive a `calc()` with 25,000 terms. It deserves
its own review.
- #40023 (Windows event loop redesign), #29928 (Windows exit path),
#40534, #43963, #39571, #42904, #42834, #36355, #43266: refactors or
features whose crash is already covered or isn't a crash.
- The pull requests marked *(crash fix only)* below should stay open for
their other half.

### How did you verify your code works?

- **Tests.** Every fix has a test that fails on `main` (a release or an
ASAN build) and passes on this branch, except where that isn't
practical: code that only runs on Windows or macOS, inputs that need
several GB of memory, and a few rare races. Those were checked by hand
or by reading.
- **Stored repro scripts.** 230 crash repros ran on release and ASAN
builds of this branch and of `main`, side by side. Release: 88 no longer
crash. ASAN: 106 no longer crash. None crashes that didn't before. What
still crashes needs WebKit, is SQLite's own bug, or isn't a crash. The
ASAN number is from a later commit than the release number.
- **Dev server.** Because one fix makes requests wait, 2,171 generated
programs ran random interleavings of edits, build errors, failing
plugins, reloads, stops and disconnects with about 120,000 requests. No
request hung, was answered twice or got a stale body. `main` hung in 82
of 1,161 programs. This also found the four dev server bugs listed
above.
- **Path helpers.** 336,000 boundary cases with buffers of exactly the
computed size, and 12,003 random calls through 30 JS APIs on an ASAN
build, compared with `main`. No sanitizer report, and the results match
wherever `main` doesn't panic.
- **What worked on 1.4.3 still works.** Reviewers compared behavior with
1.4.3 and took out what changed it: for example an output directory
layout change for 9 or more entry points, a `server.reload()` change,
and a changed error message for `import("file:///50%deposit.ts")`.
- **Not run locally:** the Windows, macOS and FreeBSD code paths. CI
compiles and tests them.

Node's option parser stops at a lone `-`. The walk read it as a flag
that can take a value, so `["-", "-e", "1"]` sliced at 1. It now slices
at 2, as in Node. `bun - -e 1` has that array as process.execArgv.

A flag with `=` has its value, so the walk does not ask the CLI table
about it.

Remove the entry of the deleted default-args.test.mjs from
test/expected-durations.json.
The walk over a Worker's own execArgv follows Node where Node accepts
the array, and bun's CLI where Node rejects it:
- `--print=<x>` is `--print`. Node does not use `<x>`, and main agreed
  with Node for `["--print=1"]`.
- A print flag only prints before `-`, `--` or an option.
- An eval flag without a code means that `--eval` has no value.

arguments::takes_value is now built on values_of, the AUTO_PARAMS
lookup that script_or_command.rs had. It moved next to the table.
create_exec_argv had its own set of the flags that take a value, made
from the same table. It calls takes_value, and the set is gone. The
result is the same for every name in the table.

Tests: the rows for a Worker's own execArgv go from 25 to 44, so that
each clause of the walk and of takes_value has a row, with 16-bit
tokens too. They make the Worker in the test process.

#46021 took the crash fix of this PR. The branch now has main merged in, and it keeps main's clamp in get_default_args as it is.

What is left is the other half: the start comes from a per-VM flag, as in Node v26, and not from the tokens of process.execArgv.

  • On main, bun --eval=<code> zzz yyy still returns ["yyy"], and bun run -e <code> ./file.js zzz returns the script path as a positional.
  • 44 of the 96 tests in parse-args-default-args.test.ts fail on main 9b4284f. All 96 pass on this branch.
  • The explicit args path and the slice type are as on main now. The constructor that an earlier version added is gone.
  • default-args.test.mjs is removed: its 8 launches and the 3 rows that Hardening: fix crashes across the runtime, bundler, dev server, shell and CLI #46021 added are in the new file with the same expected values.

The description is rewritten for this scope, with the measurements against the new main.

🟡 nit (optional): maintainers get two helpers answering whether a bun flag takes the next token as its value, and the new one ignores short chains. src/runtime/cli/Arguments.rs:795 takes_value matches only a two-byte -x, while script_or_command.rs:54 has_value_in_next_argument walks chains like -be that bun's clap accepts. So bun -be '<code>' reports process.execArgv as ["-be"] without the code (pre-existing), and a Worker given execArgv: ["-be", "1"] slices at 2 where the main thread slices at 1. Fix: one chain-aware helper in Arguments.rs used by node_process.rs:309 and jsc_hooks.rs:1670,1676, so every spelling bun's CLI accepts gets the same answer. [also at: src/runtime/cli/Arguments.rs:799 - nit, pre-existing: users who chain short flags, e.g. bun -be '<code>', get process.execArgv of ["-be"] with the code token missing, and a Worker walk that never sees the code.]

Why this was flagged

Bun's CLI parser chains short flags and lets the last letter take the next token (src/clap/streaming.rs:265-299), so bun -be '<code>' zzz is --bun -e <code> and run_command.rs:1092 sets has_eval_string true for the main thread. The new takes_value at src/runtime/cli/Arguments.rs:794-795 only recognises [b'-', b'-', long] and the exact two-byte [b'-', short], so takes_value(b"-be") is None. In node_process.rs:309 that None != Some(true) ends the execArgv scan at the code token, so process.execArgv is ["-be"]; the base branch's MAP had the same gap, so that part is pre-existing. In src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:1675-1677 the (name, None) arm turns that None into value_may_follow = true, so a Worker made with execArgv: ["-be", "1"] consumes "1" as an unknown flag's value, has_eval_string stays false, and parseArgs() in that Worker slices at 2 while the main thread given the same spelling slices at 1; the base Worker scan also sliced at 2, so this is a parity gap, not a regression. script_or_command.rs:39-65 already has the chain-aware version of this question (has_value_in_next_argument), so the repo now carries two implementations that disagree on -be.

Verification: Trigger: a chained short flag, e.g. a Worker created with execArgv: ["-be", "<code>"]. The new takes_value at src/runtime/cli/Arguments.rs:790-800 only matches [b'-', b'-', long @ ..] and the exact two-byte [b'-', short]; takes_value(b"-be") falls to _ => None. In exec_argv_has_eval_string (src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:1619-1681) -be lands in (name, None), so has_eval_string stays false and the Worker slices at 2 while the parent slices at 1.

Not changed in this PR. The facts are right: takes_value reads --name and -n, and a chain such as -be is not read.

  • The set that create_exec_argv had on main has the same gap, so takes_value gives what main gives: bun -be <code> has ["-be"] as process.execArgv on main 9b4284f and on 1.4.2, and bun -br ./x.js file.js has ["-br"].
  • A chain-aware answer there changes process.execArgv for those launches. That is a change to another API, with its own tests in process.test.js.
  • One helper for all three callers also needs a decision for -pe: has_value_in_next_argument reads it as -p with the attached value e, and the CLI reads -pe <code> as -p <code> (NODE_SHORT_ALIASES).
  • For a Worker, main and this branch agree on these spellings: execArgv: ["-be", "1"] slices at 2 on both.

The description has the case under "Not in this change" (spellings of bun's CLI that the walk does not read).

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: pre-existing: users running bun as node with -e <code> zzz yyy get process.argv of [node, yyy], so parseArgs() drops zzz, as on the base branch. The as-node eval branch at src/runtime/cli/run_command.rs:3148-3161 boots the [eval] entry without merging ctx.positionals into ctx.passthrough, which exec_eval does at run_command.rs:3107-3113. clap stops at the first positional, so zzz stays in positionals and only yyy reaches vm.argv. The as-node row here passes no program arguments, so it cannot catch this. Fix: merge positionals into passthrough in the as-node eval branch as exec_eval does, and add as-node rows with zzz yyy.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.

Why this was flagged

Trigger: bun invoked as node with -e <code> zzz yyy, where the code calls util.parseArgs() with no args. Arguments.rs:847 sets stop_after_positional_at: 1 for RunAsNodeCommand, so src/clap/comptime.rs:555-571 puts zzz in pos and only yyy in passthrough_positionals. exec_as_if_node at src/runtime/cli/run_command.rs:3148-3161 sees the non-empty eval script and calls boot directly, never merging ctx.positionals into ctx.passthrough the way exec_eval does at run_command.rs:3107-3113. boot sets vm.argv = ctx.passthrough (run_command.rs:1056), and create_argv in node_process.rs:363-387 omits the [eval] main, so process.argv is [node, yyy]. parse_args.rs:191-201 then slices at 1 and returns ["yyy"]; Node returns ["zzz","yyy"]. The base branch loses zzz the same way, so this is pre-existing; the new as-node row at parse-args-default-args.test.ts:101-105 only runs calls({ ifStrictReturns: true }) with no program arguments and so passes on both sides.

Verification: Bun invoked with argv0 node as node -e <code> zzz yyy. exec_as_if_node (run_command.rs:3148-3161) calls Self::boot(ctx, entry, None) directly with no such merge, so vm.argv == ["yyy"]. Base branch fails the same way. The new as-node row at test/js/node/util/parse_args/parse-args-default-args.test.ts:101-105 passes no program arguments, so it cannot observe the dropped positional.

This is #40482, and #43270 is the open fix for it. This PR does not change exec_as_if_node.

The as-node row here has no program arguments for that reason: a row with zzz yyy fails on main and on this branch until process.argv is right there. The description has it under "Not in this change".
