What

require.resolve(id, { paths }), Module._resolveFilename(..., { paths }) and import.meta.resolve pass each options.paths entry to the resolver as a module search directory (custom_dir_paths). Fuzzilli found that an entry that is not an absolute path reached dir_info_cached, which asserted and aborted the process:

require.resolve("total", { paths: [512] }); // panic: cannot resolve DirInfo for non-absolute path: 512
require.resolve("total", { paths: ["relative_dir"] }); // panic: cannot resolve DirInfo for non-absolute path: relative_dir

Status relative to main

#35349 has since replaced that assert with return Ok(None), so the panic itself no longer reproduces on main. What this PR still changes:

  1. Node compat for relative entries. Node anchors a relative paths entry at the cwd (Module._nodeModulePaths starts with path.resolve(from)). On main a relative entry silently misses. Here both custom_dir_paths consumers (the package-path loop and the relative-specifier loop in resolver.rs) absolutize a non-absolute entry against top_level_dir before use, with a pooled PathBuffer and a host-native join (abs_buf_checked_native, platform::Auto). The host-native join matters on POSIX, where platform::Loose treats C:/foo as absolute and would leave it unchanged.
  2. options.paths conversion at the JS boundary goes through the IDL machinery, as requested in review: Bun::convertIDL<IDLSequence<Bun::IDLStrictString>> with a Bindgen::LiteralConversionContext, in both ImportMetaObject.cpp (require.resolve) and NodeModuleModule.cpp (Module._resolveFilename). A non-string entry throws TypeError with code ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE in both. On main, Module._resolveFilename coerced it with toString.
  3. Regression tests.

Behavior after this PR (options.paths must still be an array):

  • require.resolve("pkg", { paths: ["rel_dir"] }) searches <cwd>/rel_dir/node_modules (matches Node and test-require-resolve-opts-paths-relative.js)
  • require.resolve("pkg", { paths: ["C:/Users/foo"] }) on POSIX is anchored at <cwd>/C:/Users/foo, like Node's path.resolve
  • require.resolve("pkg", { paths: [512] }) and Module._resolveFilename("pkg", m, false, { paths: [512] }) throw ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE (matches Node and test-require-resolve-invalid-paths.js)

Rebase notes

The rebase onto main had non-trivial conflicts. Resolution:

Test

test/js/node/module/module-resolve-filename-paths.test.js gains tests for non-string entries (ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE), relative and Windows-drive entries with bare and relative specifiers (no crash, MODULE_NOT_FOUND), createRequire().resolve with a relative entry, and a positive cwd-relative resolution. The file passes under both bun test and node --test. test-require-resolve.js, test-require-resolve-invalid-paths.js and test-require-resolve-opts-paths-relative.js from the vendored Node suite pass.

Found by Fuzzilli.

Found 2 issues this PR may fix:

  1. [Windows] "Cannot resolve DirInfo for non-absolute path" with eslint #30429 - Same "cannot resolve DirInfo for non-absolute path" panic triggered by eslint on Windows; the resolver hardening to skip non-absolute entries would prevent this crash
  2. Webpack build crash with --bun on windows #19584 - Same panic with "cannot resolve DirInfo for non-absolute path: tsconfig.node.json" during webpack build on Windows; the resolver fix directly addresses this

Thanks, but I don't think this PR fixes #30429 or #19584 — they share the same assertion message but come from different callers:

Both are Windows-specific relative-path resolution cases that this change doesn't touch, so I'm leaving the Fixes lines out to avoid incorrectly auto-closing them.

LGTM — all prior feedback addressed (relative-path absolutization, pooled buffer instead of abs_alloc, and the test now pins ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE).

Extended reasoning...

Overview

Fuzzilli-found crash fix: require.resolve(id, { paths }) / Module._resolveFilename panicked the process when options.paths contained a non-string or non-absolute entry, because the entry reached dir_info_cached which asserts on non-absolute paths. The fix has two parts:

  • C++ boundary (ImportMetaObject.cpp, NodeModuleModule.cpp): validate each paths[i] is a string and throw ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE otherwise (matching Node). Also adds a missing exception check after getIndex in the ImportMetaObject loop.
  • Resolver (resolver.rs): relative entries are absolutized against cwd via a pooled PathBuffer + abs_buf_checked before check_package_path, mirroring Node's path.resolve(from) in _nodeModulePaths. The absolute-path fast path is byte-identical to before (source_dir = custom_utf8.slice()).

Three new tests cover the non-string error code, the non-absolute no-crash case, and a positive cwd-relative resolution verified against Node.

Security risks

None. This is input-validation hardening that converts an uncatchable Rust panic into a catchable ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE / MODULE_NOT_FOUND. No new search roots are introduced beyond what Node already searches; relative entries resolve against cwd exactly as in Node.

Level of scrutiny

Module resolution is core infrastructure, but the change is tightly scoped to the custom_dir_paths branch (only reached when options.paths is explicitly passed). The common case — absolute paths entries — flows through unchanged. The pooled-buffer pattern (path_buffer_pool::get()) is the standard idiom used in ~48 other files in the codebase, and the RAII guard returns the buffer on drop so there's no leak.

Other factors

This PR went through three review iterations on this thread, each addressed:

  1. Initial continue-on-relative diverged from Node → fixed by absolutizing against cwd.
  2. abs_alloc interned into the never-freed DirnameStore per call → fixed by switching to a pooled buffer.
  3. Test only asserted .toThrow() → fixed with a codeOf helper that pins ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE.

The author also correctly declined the auto-suggested Fixes #30429/#19584 links (different call sites sharing the same assertion message) and noted the pre-existing dir_info_cached_miss interning as out-of-scope. The bug-hunting system found no new issues on the final revision. CI build #58967 is in progress.

CI for build #58967 failed only on darwin-14-x64-test-bun (all 13 other test platforms, including the ASAN and both Windows jobs, passed). The failure is an unrelated flake:

  • test/cli/install/lockfile-version-2.test.ts → "unsafe git .bun-tag is rejected only at version 2" timed out after 90s (retried, still timed out). That test points git clone at git+ssh://git@127.0.0.1:1/... expecting a fast failure; the SSH connect hung on that runner instead. It's a bun install git-dependency test with no relation to this PR (module resolution / options.paths).
  • The (fail) lines from done-infinity.fixture.ts are the expected output of a fixture spawned by done-async.test.ts, not real failures.

None of this touches the 4 files changed here (resolver.rs, ImportMetaObject.cpp, NodeModuleModule.cpp, and the test). Re-triggered CI once.

CI status (build #58972)

The two failing jobs are unrelated infrastructure flake — transient GitHub download failures for vendored build dependencies, not anything in this PR:

  • :linux: aarch64-android - build-cpp: [libwebp] error: Failed to download after 5 attempts: https://github.com/webmproject/libwebp/archive/....tar.gz
  • :freebsd: aarch64 - build-cpp: [libjpeg-turbo] error: Failed to download after 5 attempts: https://github.com/libjpeg-turbo/libjpeg-turbo/archive/....tar.gz

Both are third-party tarball fetches in the C++ vendoring step. The same build-cpp jobs for these platforms passed in the earlier build #58967, confirming it's intermittent network flakiness rather than a code issue. None of this touches the 4 files changed here (resolver.rs, resolver/lib.rs, ImportMetaObject.cpp, NodeModuleModule.cpp, and the test).

The change itself is complete and verified locally: bun bd builds clean (Rust + C++), all regression tests pass under both Bun and node --test, the original Fuzzilli crash plus the relative-path and Windows-drive-path-on-POSIX variants all resolve cleanly, and CodeRabbit/review feedback is fully addressed. I already re-triggered CI once earlier for a different flake, so I'm not pushing another retrigger — a maintainer re-run of the two build-cpp jobs (or the fresh build already kicked off by the latest commit) should clear it.

CI status (build #58976)

The only failing job is again :darwin: 14 x64 - test-bun, and the only failing test is the same unrelated flake from build #58967:

::error title=error: Test "unsafe git .bun-tag is rejected only at version 2" timed out after 90000ms::

That test (test/cli/install/lockfile-version-2.test.ts) points git clone at git+ssh://git@127.0.0.1:1/... expecting a fast failure; on this macOS runner the SSH connect hangs for the full 90s timeout instead (it was retried via [attempt #2] and timed out again). It's a bun install git-dependency test with nothing to do with this PR. Every other platform — including the ASAN Linux job and all Windows jobs — passed; my test file wasn't even in this shard. (The snapshots: 111 passed, 1 failed line is from a different file that still reports 0 fail tests and didn't fail the job.)

The code is complete and verified locally across all options.paths crash vectors (bare + relative specifiers, numeric, relative-string, and Windows-drive-path entries), matching Node, with no leak. I already used my one CI re-trigger earlier for this same flake, so I'm not pushing another — a maintainer re-run of the darwin-14-x64-test-bun job should clear it.

Update on build #58976: a second macOS job (:darwin: 26 aarch64 - test-bun) also shows red, but it's the same flake class — its only failing test is another bun install git-dependency timeout ("should handle Git URL in dependencies (SCP-style)" timed out after 20000ms), and the job was then SIGTERM'd once the build was already failing. My test file (module-resolve-filename-paths.test.js) ran on that shard and passed.

So both red jobs are unrelated git/network flake on the macOS runners, not this PR. I've used my one CI re-trigger already, so I'm leaving it for a maintainer to re-run the two darwin … test-bun jobs. The change itself is complete and green everywhere else.

Refactor the list to be a VectorWTF::String and then use the existing IDL conversion stuff to do the conversions.

Done in fd8cb3d — both require.resolve (NodeModuleModule.cpp) and import.meta.resolve (ImportMetaObject.cpp) now convert options.paths with convert<IDLSequence<IDLDOMString>> into a Vector<WTF::String>, and build a throwaway Vector<BunString> only to cross the Bun__resolveSyncWithPaths FFI boundary (which still traffics in BunString). This dropped the hand-rolled forEachInIterable/getIndex loops and the manual isString() checks.

One behavior note: WebIDL DOMString coerces via toString, so a non-string entry like { paths: [512] } is now coerced to "512" instead of throwing ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE (it still can't crash). Updated the regression test accordingly. Let me know if you'd prefer to keep the strict non-string rejection — I can re-add a lightweight guard before the convert if so.

require.resolve/import.meta.resolve/Module._resolveFilename still resolve string paths identically, the non-array ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE/"must be an array" checks are unchanged, and the node require-resolve fixtures + resolve suites pass.

All my earlier feedback is addressed and I didn't find further issues — deferring to a maintainer for the open coercion-vs-strict-rejection question on non-string paths entries and final sign-off on the resolver changes.

Extended reasoning...

Overview

This PR fixes a Rust panic (cannot resolve DirInfo for non-absolute path) triggered when require.resolve / Module._resolveFilename / import.meta.resolve receive an options.paths array containing a non-absolute entry. It touches four areas: the core resolver (src/resolver/resolver.rs, both custom_dir_paths consumers now absolutize relative entries against cwd via a new abs_buf_checked_native helper in src/resolver/lib.rs), the JSC C++ boundary (ImportMetaObject.cpp and NodeModuleModule.cpp now use convert<IDLSequence<IDLDOMString>> instead of hand-rolled iteration), and a regression test file with four new tests covering bare/relative specifiers, drive-path entries, coerced numeric entries, and a positive cwd-relative resolution.

Security risks

None identified. The change hardens user-controlled input handling (turning an uncatchable process abort into a normal resolution miss) and does not introduce new filesystem access, auth, or data-exposure surface. The pooled PathBuffer is held only across a single check_*_path call and the FFI boundary still ref-counts BunString correctly.

Level of scrutiny

Medium-high. The module resolver is a hot, correctness-critical path used by every require/import, and the fix spans Rust resolver logic, a new path-joining helper with platform-specific semantics, and C++/FFI marshalling. The PR went through five rounds of feedback (Node-compat divergence on relative paths, a per-call DirnameStore leak, a Loose-vs-native platform mismatch on drive prefixes, a second unfixed custom_dir_paths consumer, and a dual-runtime test gate), each of which the author addressed cleanly — but the iteration count itself signals this is not a mechanical change.

Other factors

  • Open design question: commit fd8cb3d switched to WebIDL IDLSequence<IDLDOMString>, so non-string entries are now ToString-coerced (e.g. 512 → "512") instead of throwing ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE like Node. The author explicitly flagged this as an intentional divergence pending maintainer preference ("Let me know if you'd prefer to keep the strict non-string rejection"). That is a Node-compat policy call a human should make.
  • CI: the most recent build referenced in the thread (#59039 on fd8cb3d) shows an x64-musl build-bun link failure that looks like LTO infrastructure flake rather than this change, and several earlier runs failed only on unrelated macOS git/network timeouts; a maintainer should confirm green CI on 301511d before merge.
  • All six of my prior inline comments are resolved, and the bug-hunting pass on the current head found nothing.

Given the resolver scope plus the outstanding behavioral decision, I'm not auto-approving.

CI status (build #59055)

Good progress this run — every build job passed on all platforms (including x64-musl / aarch64-musl / baseline / android / asan), confirming the WebIDL refactor compiles and links everywhere. The single failing job is :windows: 11 aarch64 - test-bun, and its only failing test is unrelated infrastructure flake:

test/cli/install/bun-upgrade.test.ts:194 "zero arguments, should succeed"
Received: "error: Canary builds are not available for this platform yet
           Filename: bun-windows-aarch64.zip"

bun upgrade couldn't find a published canary release artifact for the (newer) bun-windows-aarch64 target — a release-availability issue, not anything in this PR. My test file (module-resolve-filename-paths.test.js) ran and passed on that shard.

I already used my one CI re-trigger earlier for a different flake, so I'm leaving the windows-11-aarch64-test-bun re-run to a maintainer. The change itself is green across all builds and all other test platforms.

Independent confirmation from crash telemetry: this PR's custom_dir_paths fix covers the long-standing cannot resolve DirInfo for non-absolute path panic that has been firing on real user projects for many releases (hundreds of events across 1.3.x stables, still present on 1.4 canary — the leaked paths are monorepo workspace dirs like apps/backoffice-… and, on Windows, apps\shared\core from path.join, i.e. exactly require.resolve(id, { paths: ["apps/shared/core"] })).

Reproduced on 61bd9976e:

require.resolve("some-pkg", { paths: ["apps/shared/core"] });
// panic: cannot resolve DirInfo for non-absolute path: apps/shared/core

I had the equivalent (narrower) fix on farm/d34ff322/fix-relative-require-resolve-paths — same is_absolute + pooled-buffer absolutization in the check_package_path loop, plus two tests in module-resolve-filename-paths.test.js (a relative()-computed entry in-process, and a spawned-process path.join("apps","shared","core") entry anchored at cwd, verified against Node) — not opening a competing PR since this one is a superset (both loops, native-platform join semantics, and the C++ options.paths IDL conversion). Feel free to cherry-pick the tests if useful.

All of my earlier feedback is addressed and I found nothing further, but this touches the core resolver plus the C++→Rust resolve boundary and carries an intentional Node divergence (WebIDL DOMString coercion of paths entries vs Node's ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE) that you've left open for a maintainer call — so I'll leave the final sign-off to a human.

Extended reasoning...

Overview

The PR fixes a Rust panic in require.resolve / Module._resolveFilename / import.meta.resolve when options.paths contains a non-absolute entry. It spans:

  • src/resolver/resolver.rs — both custom_dir_paths consumption sites (package and relative loops) now absolutize relative entries against cwd into a pooled PathBuffer before calling check_package_path / check_relative_path.
  • src/resolver/lib.rs — adds FileSystem::abs_buf_checked_native (host-native platform::Auto join) so the absolutizer agrees with the native is_absolute guard and dir_info_cached assertion.
  • src/jsc/bindings/ImportMetaObject.cpp and src/jsc/modules/NodeModuleModule.cpp — replace the hand-rolled options.paths element loops with convert<IDLSequence<IDLDOMString>>, then build a transient Vector<BunString> for the Bun__resolveSyncWithPaths FFI.
  • New regression tests covering numeric, relative-string, and Windows-drive-path paths entries for both bare and relative specifiers, plus a positive cwd-relative resolution.

Security risks

None identified. The change hardens user-controlled input handling (it removes a process-abort vector reachable from JS) and does not introduce new filesystem reach — relative entries are anchored at top_level_dir (cwd), which mirrors Node's path.resolve(from) and is no broader than what an absolute entry could already specify.

Level of scrutiny

High. The module resolver is load-bearing for every require/import, and this PR went through six rounds of iterative correction (Node-compat semantics for relative entries, an abs_alloc→DirnameStore per-call leak, the platform::Loose-vs-native mismatch on Windows drive prefixes, the second custom_dir_paths consumer, and the dual-runtime test gating). All of those are now addressed, but the density of subtle issues argues for a maintainer pass over the final shape — particularly the new abs_buf_checked_native helper and the choice to apply it at the call sites rather than inside check_relative_path.

Other factors

  • Open design question: switching to IDLSequence<IDLDOMString> means non-string paths entries are now ToString-coerced (Bun) instead of rejected with ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE (Node). The author explicitly flagged this as a maintainer decision; I'm not in a position to ratify a deliberate Node-compat divergence.
  • All of my prior inline comments are resolved, and the current bug-hunt pass found nothing.
  • CI failures across the thread were unrelated infra flake (macOS git/SSH timeouts, vendored-tarball download failures, a missing windows-aarch64 canary artifact); the new test file passed on every shard where it ran.
  • No CODEOWNERS entries cover these paths.

Merged main (37 commits behind) and added one more change in b06af12:

  • resolver.rs: downgraded the dir_info_cached absolute-path check from assert! back to debug_assert!. The Zig reference uses bun.assertf here, which is debug-only; Replace bun assert helpers with Rust builtin assert macros #30918 promoted it to an always-on assert! as an audit instrument, and this assertion is the one it surfaced as user-reachable. The custom_dir_paths caller is now absolutized upstream (this PR), so the assertion holds there in debug too, but the downgrade also restores 1.3.x release behavior for the other readDirInfo callers ([Windows] "Cannot resolve DirInfo for non-absolute path" with eslint #30429, Webpack build crash with --bun on windows #19584) that can still reach it on Windows until they get their own upstream fix. Falling through with a relative path produces MODULE_NOT_FOUND, not anything unsafe.
  • Added the createRequire(...).resolve("foo", { paths: ["./rel"] }) repro to the non-absolute-paths test (asserts MODULE_NOT_FOUND).

Verified:

  • bun bd test test/js/node/module/module-resolve-filename-paths.test.js: 9/9 pass
  • USE_SYSTEM_BUN=1 bun test <same>: panics the runner (fail-before)
  • node --test <same>: 9/9 pass
  • bun bd test test/js/node/module/node-module-module.test.js: 29/29 pass
  • bun bd test/js/node/test/parallel/test-require-resolve.js: exit 0

Previous CI failures on build #61211 were unrelated (bunx.test.ts node-24 check, 30205.test.ts napi build, serve-body-leak RSS flake). Waiting on the new run.

All my prior feedback is addressed and I found no new issues, but this touches the core resolver and the latest push (b06af12) downgrades the dir_info_cached absolute-path assert! to debug_assert! — that plus the intentional Node divergence on non-string paths entries (WebIDL coercion vs ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE) are design calls a maintainer should sign off on.

Extended reasoning...

Overview

This PR fixes a Rust panic in require.resolve(id, { paths }) / Module._resolveFilename / import.meta.resolve when options.paths contains a non-absolute entry. It touches:

  • src/resolver/resolver.rs — both custom_dir_paths consumers (package and relative loops) now absolutize relative entries against cwd via a pooled PathBuffer before calling check_package_path/check_relative_path; the dir_info_cached absolute-path assert! is downgraded to debug_assert!.
  • src/resolver/lib.rs — adds FileSystem::abs_buf_checked_native (joins with platform::Auto instead of Loose so a Windows drive prefix on POSIX is treated as a relative segment).
  • src/jsc/bindings/ImportMetaObject.cpp, src/jsc/modules/NodeModuleModule.cpp — replace hand-rolled per-element loops with convert<IDLSequence<IDLDOMString>>.
  • test/js/node/module/module-resolve-filename-paths.test.js — three new dual-runtime regression tests.

I have reviewed this PR across seven prior rounds; every issue I raised (cwd-anchoring, abs_alloc leak, Loose-vs-native drive-prefix gap, the second check_relative consumer, the node --test gating, the "foo" hermeticity nit) was addressed, and the bug-hunting system found nothing on the current revision (d18229d).

Security risks

None apparent. The change absolutizes user-supplied relative paths against process.cwd(), which is exactly what Node's path.resolve does and what the resolver already did for the implicit parent-derived search root. There is no new privilege boundary, auth, or data-exposure surface.

Level of scrutiny

High. The module resolver is core runtime infrastructure — every require/import flows through it, and subtle path-semantics bugs surface as hard-to-diagnose resolution failures across the ecosystem. Two changes in particular are policy decisions rather than mechanical fixes:

  1. assert! → debug_assert! (b06af12, new since my last review): the author's rationale is reasonable — the Zig original used debug-only bun.assertf, #30918 promoted it as an audit instrument, and falling through yields MODULE_NOT_FOUND rather than UB. But this also changes release-build behavior for the other callers (#30429, #19584) that can still reach it on Windows, effectively masking those panics until they get their own upstream fix. A maintainer should confirm that's the intended trade-off.
  2. WebIDL DOMString coercion for non-string paths entries instead of Node's ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE: the author flagged this as an open question ("Let me know if you'd prefer to keep the strict non-string rejection") and the PR description calls it "the one intentional divergence, following the IDL conversion requested in review" — I don't see that request in the visible timeline, so a maintainer should confirm the choice.

Other factors

  • Thorough test coverage (bare/relative specifiers × relative/drive-prefix/coerced entries, plus a positive cwd-anchored resolution), verified under both Bun and node --test.
  • CI history shows only unrelated infra flakes (macOS git/SSH timeouts, vendored-tarball download failures, win-aarch64 canary unavailability).
  • No human reviewer has weighed in yet; all timeline activity is bot-driven.

Main has moved under this PR: the dir_info_cached assertion is now a plain return Ok(None) and ImportMetaObject.cpp validates paths[i] as a string. The branch conflicts with main in three files. #41491 carries only the resolver change (anchor a relative paths entry at the cwd) on top of current main.

Rebasing onto main to resolve the merge conflicts now. I will run the resolver tests again and force-push when it is clean.

…vert paths via IDL

options.paths entries reach the resolver as custom_dir_paths. A relative
entry (or a Windows drive path on POSIX) was used as a source dir as-is;
Node instead anchors it at the cwd (Module._nodeModulePaths does
path.resolve(from)). Absolutize such entries against top_level_dir with a
host-native join (abs_buf_checked_native) in both custom_dir_paths loops,
using a pooled PathBuffer.

At the JS boundary, convert options.paths with the existing IDL machinery
(IDLSequence<Bun::IDLStrictString> + Bindgen::LiteralConversionContext)
in both require.resolve and Module._resolveFilename, so a non-string
entry throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE in both (Module._resolveFilename used
to coerce it).

…s.paths

Node returns a builtin id from Module._resolveFilename before it looks at
options.paths, so a non-array or non-string paths value must not throw
for "node:fs". require.resolve already had this bypass; mirror it here
now that the paths conversion is strict. The pre-existing non-array test
used the builtin "path" as its id and only passed because of the old
ordering; switch it to a non-builtin id so it holds under Node too.

Rebase onto main is done (head 625143d, history squashed to one commit plus follow-ups). The conflicts were not trivial, so the PR description now has a "Rebase notes" section. Short version:

Verified locally after the rebase: bun bd builds, module-resolve-filename-paths.test.js passes 9/9 under bun test and node --test, test-require-resolve.js, test-require-resolve-invalid-paths.js and test-require-resolve-opts-paths-relative.js pass, and the node-module / import-meta resolve suites pass (98 tests).

### What does this PR do?

Hardening. This collects the open pull requests that fix a crash in Bun
into one change, and fixes about 20 more crashes that had no pull
request.

"Crash" here means a segfault, a Rust panic, an abort, a failed
assertion, memory corruption that a sanitizer reports, a native stack
overflow, or an exception that ends the process and that the program
can't catch. With this PR those cases throw a normal error, print a
normal CLI error and exit 1, or just work.

306 pull requests are included: 227 whole, and 79 cut down to the crash
fix where the rest was a refactor, a feature or a behavior change. Each
one was checked against current `main` first. 45 more turned out to be
fixed already, and 17 were duplicates. The full list is at the bottom.

#### Crashes you could hit in normal use

- **`bun build` with macros and a `.env` file crashed at random.** In a
repro with many macro modules, more than a third of the builds crashed.
Now 3,000 of 3,000 produce the right bundle. (#45960)
- **`bun run` and `bunx` aborted if a signal arrived while the child was
being spawned.** (#38926, #45965)
- **`bun build --compile ./index.js ./public/*` panicked** if an
embedded file's name wasn't valid UTF-8.
- **A truncated or corrupted compiled executable** died with SIGBUS or a
panic at startup. It now prints an error. (#31787, #38251, #41360)
- **Dev server:** several `Option::unwrap()` panics after a failed or
deleted import (#38046, #44744, #44746), a segfault when an `onLoad`
plugin throws while another bundle is queued, a request that hung and
then panicked with `bundle active`, and `server.stop()` that never
resolved after a client aborted a waiting request.
- **`Bun.serve`:** `server.fetch(url, { headers: new Headers() })`
followed by a GC segfaulted (#40888). Routes were used after free after
`server.reload()` with `tls.serverName` (#38636).
- **`text()` and `json()` on a stream of string chunks** could abort the
process, a regression in 1.4.0. (#44269)
- **`Bun.Transpiler` with `exports.eliminate` or `exports.replace`**
aborted on `export default 1` and on most re-export clauses. (#44137)
- **A decorated `declare` field in a class expression** with
`experimentalDecorators` panicked. (#38095)
- **YAML and JSON5 files with a key that isn't a string** panicked with
`--no-bundle` and in `Bun.Transpiler`. (#41827)
- **`Bun.FileSystemRouter`:** reading `.params` segfaulted when a
rejected route candidate left its parameters behind. (#39290, #39291)
- **Native addons that call `uv_async_*`, `uv_timer_*`, `uv_idle_*`,
`uv_prepare_*`, `uv_check_*`, `uv_queue_work` or `uv_cwd`** aborted with
"unsupported uv function" on Linux and macOS. They're implemented now.
(#36609, #39652, #39892)
- **`--watch` and `--hot`** panicked when the system was out of inotify
instances or file descriptors, or when the reload `exec` failed. They
print an error now. (#39629, #39975, #44837)
- **Paths longer than the path buffer** panicked in `bun install`, the
resolver, the bundler, `--compile`, `tsconfig.json` `paths` and
`baseUrl`, `package.json` `main` and `sideEffects`, `bun run --filter`,
`bun pm diff`, source maps and snapshots. They're ordinary errors now,
or they work. (#36340, #37529, #39104, #39650, #43067)
- **A Worker that creates a `ShadowRealm` and imports
`node:worker_threads` in it** segfaulted.
- **`structuredClone` or `postMessage` of an X25519 key** gave an object
that aborted the process when read. (#45624)
- **`node:stream` web adapters and `node:http2`** could end the process
with an exception that no handler could catch. (#45076, #45975)
- **Windows:** a watcher panic in a burst of file changes (#44344), a
segfault after the machine resumes from sleep (#33015), crashes in the
shell's pipe reader (#39638, #43606), and addons that import from
`node.exe` without the delay-load hook (#35618).

Most of the rest needs unusual input: strings near the 2 GiB limit,
buffers that another thread or a getter resizes or detaches in the
middle of a call, `worker.terminate()` at a bad moment, running out of
memory or file descriptors, very deep nesting, or hostile arguments to
`bun:ffi`, `node:vm` and `bun:sqlite`.

#### Behavior changes

Things that didn't crash before and behave differently now:

- `new` on native functions that aren't constructors throws a
`TypeError`, as in Node: `util.types.*`, `buffer.isAscii`, `isUtf8`,
`transcode`, `resolveObjectURL`, `bun:jsc` exports, `cc()` symbols. It
used to return the call's result. They also stop printing as `[class
hostname]`. (#34575)
- `` $`cmd` `` throws `ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE` if an environment
variable's name or value contains a NUL byte. It used to cut the value
at the NUL. (#44981)
- `cc()` functions throw a `TypeError` for arguments that used to reach
C as garbage, and `read.*(ptr, NaN)` throws. (#37989, #38057, #40773)
- As PID 1, `bun` exits with 128 + the signal number on Ctrl+C or
`docker stop`. (#38877)
- A `NODE_MODULE` addon that's already loaded by the main thread throws
`ERR_DLOPEN_FAILED` when a live Worker loads it too, as in Node.
(#39968)
- An exception from a `node:vm` context reaches `uncaughtException`
handlers. (#39992) `vm.constants.DONT_CONTEXTIFY` returns the real
global proxy. (#34623)
- `createPrivateKey` rejects an EC JWK whose private value doesn't match
its public point. (#33752)
- `@dec static {}` is a syntax error, as in TypeScript and esbuild.
(#44883)
- `clearTimeout` ignores 0 and negative ids, and timer ids no longer
wrap. (#44771)
- HEAD for a `Response` whose body is an S3-backed `Blob` reports the
length that GET sends. (#44734)
- `bun:sqlite` and `node:sqlite`: if `iterate()` left a write unfinished
on a connection that has a hook, a user function or an authorizer, the
write is finished on the connection's next call instead of during
garbage collection. If the database is gone too, it's rolled back.
- `bun test --bail` runs exit listeners and closes SQLite databases.
(#39010)
- Dev server: a request for a client script waits while a bundle is in
flight (#42733), query strings reach framework routes (#33232), and a
request gets a 500 instead of hanging when plugins fail (#36812).

#### File formats

- `.jsc` bytecode files get a 24-byte footer so they can be verified
before decoding. Files from an older Bun are ignored and the source is
parsed instead. (#39396)
- `node:vm` `cachedData` gets an 8-byte checksum. A blob from an older
Bun is rejected, which the API allows. (#32839)
- The built-in modules section of a compiled executable changes from
format 1 to 2 and carries an engine stamp. (#44907)

#### Performance

Measured in instructions per operation on release builds of this branch
and its base, with an A/A run for the noise floor (0.0 to 0.2 %).

No change: `Bun.serve`, `node:http`, WebSocket echo and publish, `bun
build` of 3,807 modules, `bun run` with 2,000 imports, `readdir` /
`Glob` / `fs.cp` over 23,689 entries, startup and RSS. The binary grows

#### Not included

- Fixes that need a WebKit change: #39967, #42534, #42982, #43764,
#43786, #44226. #42185 too: a typed array that has no `ArrayBuffer` yet
can't be pinned, so `view.buffer.transfer()` during an async call can
still free its bytes. Creating the `ArrayBuffer` up front costs 7 to 12
% on every async `fs` call, so the fix belongs in JSC: an `ArrayBuffer`
created while the view is borrowed should start out pinned.
- #45442 (`calc()` sums as a flat list): it changes minified output for
real stylesheets to survive a `calc()` with 25,000 terms. It deserves
its own review.
- #40023 (Windows event loop redesign), #29928 (Windows exit path),
#40534, #43963, #39571, #42904, #42834, #36355, #43266: refactors or
features whose crash is already covered or isn't a crash.
- The pull requests marked *(crash fix only)* below should stay open for
their other half.

### How did you verify your code works?

- **Tests.** Every fix has a test that fails on `main` (a release or an
ASAN build) and passes on this branch, except where that isn't
practical: code that only runs on Windows or macOS, inputs that need
several GB of memory, and a few rare races. Those were checked by hand
or by reading.
- **Stored repro scripts.** 230 crash repros ran on release and ASAN
builds of this branch and of `main`, side by side. Release: 88 no longer
crash. ASAN: 106 no longer crash. None crashes that didn't before. What
still crashes needs WebKit, is SQLite's own bug, or isn't a crash. The
ASAN number is from a later commit than the release number.
- **Dev server.** Because one fix makes requests wait, 2,171 generated
programs ran random interleavings of edits, build errors, failing
plugins, reloads, stops and disconnects with about 120,000 requests. No
request hung, was answered twice or got a stale body. `main` hung in 82
of 1,161 programs. This also found the four dev server bugs listed
above.
- **Path helpers.** 336,000 boundary cases with buffers of exactly the
computed size, and 12,003 random calls through 30 JS APIs on an ASAN
build, compared with `main`. No sanitizer report, and the results match
wherever `main` doesn't panic.
- **What worked on 1.4.3 still works.** Reviewers compared behavior with
1.4.3 and took out what changed it: for example an output directory
layout change for 9 or more entry points, a `server.reload()` change,
and a changed error message for `import("file:///50%deposit.ts")`.
- **Not run locally:** the Windows, macOS and FreeBSD code paths. CI
compiles and tests them.
