replace the flag-file wait in worker.ts with a readiness message after the
redirect is established, and remove the deadline and Bun.sleep loop in main.ts,
checking the fd after worker.terminate() or using an explicit cleanup-completion
signal if cleanup is asynchronous. Remove the explicit 60_000 timeout from the

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the stderr_redirected gate in Cmd::on_io_writer_chunk (src/runtime/shell/states/Cmd.rs:388): a failed write of the shell's own message to a redirect target finishing with exit 1 and no throw is the behaviour the PR description states, and the inherited-stderr case still throws as before. I also traced 2>&1 / 1>&2 through CmdOut::dup and is_same_stream into Stdio::Dup2 for the spawn form (src/runtime/shell/IO.rs:222) — both the Fd and captured Buf cases map to one stream, so that path is consistent.
Extended reasoning...
The change replaces the shell's two per-exec-form redirect appliers with a single Cmd::apply_redirect that runs before builtin lookup and PATH search, introduces CmdIO/CmdIn/CmdOut in IO.rs, and mechanically updates 16 builtins plus the spawn path; it touches fd ownership and IOWriter lifetimes but no auth, crypto or injection surface. Three confirmed inline findings (fd-limit message loss, blocking write in make_writable, and pipeline stdin overwrite causing SIGPIPE) already signal a human look is needed; this note only records what else was examined and ruled out.
A command now performs its redirect on its own streams in one step, Cmd::apply_redirect, before builtin lookup and the PATH search. A builtin, the spawn of a child process and the shell's own messages about the command all use those streams. The message about a command that does not start (not found, a refused batch-file argument, a failed spawn) now goes where the redirect sends stderr, and the redirect target is made. A redirect that fails is reported and the command is not searched for. A command with no name still performs its redirect. Builtin::init_redirections, Cmd::init_subproc_redirections, CowFd, BuiltinIO, BuiltinInput and RedirectFlags::redirects_elsewhere are gone.
- `2>&1` and `1>&2` of an external command on Windows: when the stream is an fd, the child gets that fd on both streams. `Dup2` there is a pipe that only a captured stream reads, so the output was lost under `bun exec` and in a pipeline. A shell writer whose fd libuv took over names the stream of the process that it is on. - A `Bun.file(fd)` target: the command gets a copy of the fd when the redirect is applied, for a builtin and for a child. An fd that is not open is a redirect that fails. A builtin no longer sets O_NONBLOCK on the fd of the caller. - The message about a command that does not start: the writer on the target waits for a FIFO, a socket or a tty with a poll. `&> file` gives stderr the file, so the message needs no copy of the fd. - A `Response` that a redirect rejects keeps its body. - Tests: a redirect in place of a pipe closes the shell's end of the pipe when it is applied. The worker fd test waits for the `close` event of the worker and has no timeout.

Every comment that the change adds or edits is one line now. A few that repeated the code are gone.
…r makes an unread pipe - A `Response` target is a file only when its body is a file `Blob`. The body is not converted first, so a stream body that is rejected is not read. - Windows: after `2>&1`, a child whose stdout is inherited gets the stdout of the process on stderr too. `Dup2` there made a pipe that nothing read.

nosuch_cmd 2> err.txtprintsbun: command not found: nosuch_cmdon the script's stderr and makes noerr.txt.nosuch_cmd 2>&1leaves stdout empty (can not redirect stderr to stdout forcommand not found#9099).Cmd::transition_to_exec(src/runtime/shell/states/Cmd.rs:503,:517,:639) wrote it to the inherited stderr. Two arms returned before any redirect.Fix
Cmd::apply_redirectruns once, before builtin lookup and the PATH search (POSIX 2.9.1). Cmdis the state of one simple command. It inherits its streams, anIO. Before, a builtin and a spawn each applied the redirect for itself.IOWriter, a write queue on an fd. A child needs a blocking fd, so the step takes the exec form.Downsides

Every behaviour change outside the symptom
For a command that does not start:

The command is not searched for.$EMPTY > f(no command name after expansion) makesf.$EMPTY < missingreports the open error and exits 1.nosuch > ${new Blob(["x"])}rejects with the same error as a command that exists. Before it resolved with exit code 1, also under.nothrow().nosuch 2> /dev/full,nosuch 2>&1 | true) ends the command with exit code 1 and throws nothing. bash is silent too. A write that fails on the inherited stderr still rejects, asyield.test.tspins.For a command that runs:
a | b < fthe read end closes then, andagets EPIPE or SIGPIPE at its next write. Ina > f | bthe write end closes then, andbreads the end of input at once. Before, both ends stayed open until the command with the redirect exited. bash and dash do what this PR does:sh -c 'sleep 0.1; echo hi; echo after >&2' | sleep 0.5 < fprints noafterthere (PIPESTATUS141 0). main prints it.Bun.file(fd):echo hi > ${Bun.file(fd)}. 2>&1 ${buffer}sent both streams to the buffer and stdout was lost. That is why the exec form decides the streams for a target after2>&1.O_NONBLOCKon the caller'sBun.file(fd)(3 concerns). The other choice,O_NONBLOCKon the copy, changes the fd of the caller.Bun.file(fd)that is not open is reported asToo many open files, notBad file descriptor.
