What does this PR do?

Fixes #11005.

Node.js worker_threads workers have the same globalThis shape as the main thread: no self, postMessage, addEventListener, removeEventListener, dispatchEvent, onmessage, or onerror. Bun was installing all of these as own properties of globalThis inside every worker regardless of how it was created.

This breaks the web-worker npm package (used by ffjavascript, which is used by circom/semaphore and other zk tooling). That package polyfills a WorkerGlobalScope on top of worker_threads by swapping globalThis' prototype to its own EventTarget subclass. In Node that works because nothing on globalThis shadows the prototype; in Bun the own-property native dispatchEvent won and rejected the polyfill's plain-object events with:

TypeError: Argument 1 ('event') to EventTarget.dispatchEvent must be an instance of Event

followed by panic: Uncaught exception while handling uncaught exception.

Repro

import { buildBn128, F1Field } from "ffjavascript";
let bn128 = await buildBn128();
const F = new F1Field(bn128.r);
console.log(F.sqrt(F.e("9"))); // expected 3n
bn128.terminate();
Node Bun before Bun after
output 3n TypeError + panic 3n

Fix

  • Zig__GlobalObject__create: when the worker was created via node:worker_threads (WorkerOptions::Kind::Node), delete self / addEventListener / removeEventListener / dispatchEvent / postMessage / onmessage / onerror from globalThis before user code runs. The backing globalEventScope is untouched.
  • worker_threads.ts fakeParentPort(): stop reading those properties off self; reach the same native functions through $newCppFunction and implement onmessage/onmessageerror locally on top of them.
  • Web Workers created via the global new Worker() constructor (Kind::Web) are unchanged and keep their DedicatedWorkerGlobalScope API. The main thread is also unchanged.

A handful of existing tests encoded the old Bun-specific behaviour by calling bare postMessage(...) inside worker_threads.Worker eval strings; those now go through parentPort.postMessage so they work the same in Node and Bun.

How did you verify your code works?

New tests in test/js/node/worker_threads/worker_threads.test.ts:

  • globalThis inside a node:worker_threads worker has none of the seven Web Worker globals as own properties (fails on the baked build)
  • a user-defined dispatchEvent reached via Object.setPrototypeOf(global, ...) is now callable with a plain object (the web-worker package pattern; fails on the baked build)
  • parentPort.on / parentPort.onmessage / parentPort.postMessage still round-trip messages
  • a Web Worker created via the global constructor still has self / addEventListener / dispatchEvent / postMessage

Also verified the ffjavascript repro from #11005 now prints 3n and exits 0, and test/js/node/test/parallel/test-worker-onmessage*.js still pass.

Bun installed the Web Worker globals (self, postMessage, addEventListener, removeEventListener, dispatchEvent, onmessage, onerror) unconditionally on every global object, so workers created via node:worker_threads exposed a Web Worker shaped globalThis instead of the Node shaped one. The fix introduces an m_isNodeWorker flag set before finishCreation and gates installation of those seven globals on it, moving four entries out of the static lut table into the guarded runtime path so main thread, Web Worker, and node:vm contexts are unaffected. Because parentPort previously read those globals…

Walkthrough

Node worker_threads globals no longer expose Web Worker globals by default. Native event bindings support the fake parent port, while browser-style workers retain their existing globals. Tests and fixtures now use explicit parentPort messaging.

No bugs found, but this changes the user-visible globalThis shape inside node:worker_threads workers and rewires parentPort to reach the global EventTarget through new $newCppFunction bindings — worth a human look given the compat surface.

Checked: the three newly-exposed jsFunction{Add,Remove}EventListener/jsFunctionDispatchEvent are already defined inside namespace Zig in ZigGlobalObject.cpp:1578-1629 and ignore this, so parentPort.on (which routes through this.addEventListener via injectFakeEmitter) still lands on globalEventScope.
Checked: WorkerOptions::Kind::Node is set only when the internal 3-arg Worker constructor is used from worker_threads.ts, so Web Workers keep their globals.
Checked: the two shared fixtures (worker-fixture-argv.js, worker-fixture-while-true.js) — the argv fixture is used by both Web and Node worker tests and the new branch on globalThis.addEventListener covers both; the while-true fixture is only used via wt.Worker.

Extended reasoning...

Overview

The PR removes seven Web Worker globals (self, addEventListener, removeEventListener, dispatchEvent, postMessage, onmessage, onerror) from globalThis inside node:worker_threads workers to match Node.js, fixing #11005 (the web-worker / ffjavascript polyfill pattern). It touches native worker-global initialization in ZigGlobalObject.cpp, adds header declarations plus a using namespace Zig; to the generated GeneratedJS2Native.h so $newCppFunction can reach the existing jsFunctionAddEventListener etc., and rewrites fakeParentPort() in src/js/node/worker_threads.ts to bind directly to those natives instead of reading off self. Four test files and one new fixture are updated/added.

Security risks

None identified. No auth/crypto/permissions code. The deleted properties are re-reachable via parentPort, and Kind::Web workers are unchanged.

Level of scrutiny

Medium-high. The mechanism is straightforward (delete properties post-finishCreation; wire parentPort to direct native bindings), and test coverage is good — including a positive Web-Worker regression guard and the exact web-worker prototype-swap repro. But this is a deliberate user-visible behavior change: any Bun user who was calling bare postMessage(...) or reading self inside a worker_threads.Worker will now get ReferenceError/undefined. That's the correct Node-compatible behavior, but it's a compat break for Bun-specific code, and worker-global initialization is a critical path. It also adds a blanket using namespace Zig; to a generated header included from many translation units.

Other factors

The new parentPort.onmessage implementation stores the handler in a JS closure and forwards to addEventListener/removeEventListener rather than the previous self.onmessage custom-accessor path (setEventHandlerAttribute). Functionally equivalent for delivery, and the round-trip test covers it, but it's a different native code path than before. Given the scope — native global-object init, generated-header namespace change, and a public-behavior change — a maintainer should sign off.

Reworked after self-review:

  • The original commit deleted the four static hash-table entries, which forces reifyAllStaticProperties on the worker global and eagerly materializes every lazy constructor in bunGlobalObjectTable at worker start. The Web Worker globals are now simply never installed for Kind::Node workers: addEventListener/removeEventListener/dispatchEvent/postMessage moved out of the static table into the same guarded block in addBuiltinGlobals as self/onmessage/onerror, gated on a new m_isNodeWorker bit threaded through GlobalObject::create.
  • parentPort.onmessage now goes through native setEventHandlerAttribute wrappers instead of a JS addEventListener/removeEventListener pair, so it keeps the attribute-listener slot semantics (distinct from listeners added via addEventListener, position preserved on reassignment). Added a test that addEventListener(fn); onmessage = fn; onmessage = null leaves the addEventListener registration intact.

I didn't find any bugs, but this reshapes globalThis initialization in ZigGlobalObject (moves four entries out of the static hash table into addBuiltinGlobals, adds m_isNodeWorker, new host-function wrappers) and changes user-visible Node compat behavior — worth a human look.

Checked: m_isNodeWorker defaults false so main thread / Web Workers / node:vm globals still install the four functions; fakeParentPort no longer depends on removed globals; the two updated fixtures (worker-fixture-while-true.js, worker-fixture-argv.js) still work under both Worker kinds; onmessage setter mirrors the original setGlobalOnMessage writeBarrier/ensureStillAlive sequence.

Extended reasoning...

Overview

The PR stops installing seven Web Worker globals (self, addEventListener, removeEventListener, dispatchEvent, postMessage, onmessage, onerror) on globalThis inside node:worker_threads workers. It does so by removing the four function entries from ZigGlobalObject.lut.txt, installing them via putDirectNativeFunction in addBuiltinGlobals behind a new m_isNodeWorker flag threaded through GlobalObject::create, adding four new host functions so fakeParentPort can reach the backing globalEventScope without those globals, and adding using namespace Zig; to the js2native codegen. Tests and fixtures are updated to use parentPort.postMessage instead of bare postMessage.

Security risks

None apparent — no auth/crypto/untrusted-input parsing. The change narrows exposed surface inside Node workers rather than widening it.

Level of scrutiny

High. ZigGlobalObject.cpp/.h and the .lut.txt static table are core, hot-path code that shapes every global object (main thread, Web Workers, Node workers, node:vm contexts). Moving properties from the static hash table to putDirectNativeFunction subtly changes how they're installed on the main thread too (own-property attributes, when they materialize), and removing onerror/onmessage from Node-worker globalThis is an intentional but user-visible compat change. The author already reworked the approach once after realizing the first commit forced reifyAllStaticProperties, which underscores how load-bearing this area is.

Other factors

  • CI on the reworked commit (d0d53e1) hasn't reported yet; the earlier commit had two NAPI worker test failures.
  • Good test coverage was added for both the negative (Node worker has no Web globals) and positive (Web Worker still does; parentPort.onmessage attribute-slot semantics) cases.
  • I verified worker-fixture-while-true.js is only used via wt.Worker, so switching it to parentPort.postMessage is safe, and worker-fixture-argv.js still branches correctly for both worker kinds.
  • The candidate concern about the fixture comment length was ruled out.

Given the scope (core global-object shape, new GlobalObject field, Node-compat behavior change) this should get maintainer eyes rather than bot approval.

Bot reviews came back with nothing actionable: CodeRabbit hit its rate limit and did not run, and the automated review found no bugs (it confirmed main thread, Web Workers, and node:vm contexts still get the four functions since m_isNodeWorker defaults to false, and that the onmessage setter keeps the original writeBarrier sequence). CI is running on d0d53e1; no further changes planned unless it flags something.

I didn't find any bugs, but this changes the shape of globalThis inside every node:worker_threads worker and moves four global functions (addEventListener/removeEventListener/dispatchEvent/postMessage) out of the static LUT into eager putDirectNativeFunction calls for all globals — worth a human look.

What was reviewed:

  • m_isNodeWorker defaults to false, so main thread / Web Workers / node:vm contexts still get all seven properties.
  • The new jsFunctionSetGlobalOnMessage/OnMessageError host functions mirror the existing setGlobalOnMessage custom setter (same setEventHandlerAttribute + writeBarrier + ensureStillAlive sequence).
  • fakeParentPort's new $newCppFunction bindings resolve to the same native impls the LUT used; addListener/removeListener still forward to them.
  • Test fixtures that previously called bare postMessage(...) inside worker_threads eval strings were updated to parentPort.postMessage — this is a real user-facing behavior change for anyone relying on the old Bun-specific shape.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

The PR stops installing Web Worker globals (self, addEventListener, removeEventListener, dispatchEvent, postMessage, onmessage, onerror) on globalThis inside node:worker_threads workers, matching Node.js. It threads a new m_isNodeWorker bit through GlobalObject::create, moves four entries out of ZigGlobalObject.lut.txt into a guarded putDirectNativeFunction block in addBuiltinGlobals, adds host-function wrappers so fakeParentPort() can still reach the backing globalEventScope, and updates tests/fixtures that assumed the old shape.

Security risks

None identified. The change narrows the global surface inside node workers rather than adding to it; the new host functions call the same setEventHandlerAttribute/eventHandlerAttribute helpers already used by the existing onmessage custom accessor.

Level of scrutiny

High. ZigGlobalObject.cpp/.lut.txt define the shape of globalThis for every Bun context. Moving addEventListener/removeEventListener/dispatchEvent/postMessage from the static hash table to eager putDirectNativeFunction calls changes how these properties are installed on the main thread too (no longer lazy LUT entries), and dropping seven globals inside node workers is a user-visible behavior change — the PR itself had to rewrite several existing test fixtures that called bare postMessage(...). Both aspects warrant a maintainer's sign-off.

Other factors

  • The self-review comment already caught and fixed the reifyAllStaticProperties eager-materialization issue from the first approach, which is reassuring.
  • Test coverage looks solid: absence of the seven globals, the web-worker prototype-swap pattern, parentPort message round-trips, attribute-listener slot semantics for onmessage, and a regression check that Web Workers keep the DedicatedWorkerGlobalScope API.
  • No CODEOWNERS or prior human review on the thread; CI status not yet reported in the timeline.

I didn't find any bugs, but this changes user-visible globalThis shape inside workers and touches core JSC global-object initialization (ZigGlobalObject.{cpp,h}, the static lookup table, and the js2native codegen namespace), so it's worth a human look.

What was reviewed:

  • m_isNodeWorker gating in addBuiltinGlobals — main thread, Web Workers, and node:vm contexts default to false and keep all seven globals; only the Kind::Node worker path skips them.
  • Static→putDirectNativeFunction move for addEventListener/removeEventListener/dispatchEvent/postMessage — same host functions and arities as the removed .lut.txt entries; avoids the reifyAllStaticProperties cost the first revision hit.
  • New jsFunctionSetGlobalOnMessage/OnMessageError wrappers mirror the existing setGlobalOnMessage custom-setter body (same writeBarrier + ensureStillAliveHere sequence).
  • fakeParentPort now reaches the backing globalEventScope via $newCppFunction instead of self.*; onmessage keeps attribute-listener slot semantics (covered by the new test).
Extended reasoning...

Overview

This PR stops Bun from installing Web Worker globals (self, addEventListener, removeEventListener, dispatchEvent, postMessage, onmessage, onerror) on globalThis inside node:worker_threads workers, matching Node.js. It threads a new m_isNodeWorker bit through GlobalObject::create, moves four entries out of ZigGlobalObject.lut.txt into a guarded block in addBuiltinGlobals, adds host-function wrappers for the onmessage/onmessageerror attribute-listener slot, rewrites fakeParentPort() in src/js/node/worker_threads.ts to use $newCppFunction bindings, adds using namespace Zig; to the generated js2native header, and updates a handful of test fixtures that relied on bare postMessage inside node workers.

Security risks

None identified. No auth, crypto, permissions, or untrusted-input parsing is touched. The change narrows the surface exposed on globalThis inside node workers rather than broadening it.

Level of scrutiny

High. ZigGlobalObject is the most central file in the JSC bindings — it defines the shape of globalThis for every VM. Moving properties from the static hash table to runtime putDirectNativeFunction calls has subtle implications (property attributes, enumeration order, lazy vs eager materialization) that the author already had to iterate on once after self-review. Adding using namespace Zig; to GeneratedJS2Native.h widens symbol resolution across every $cpp/$rust call site. And this is a deliberate user-visible behavior change: code that previously worked (bare postMessage(...) inside a worker_threads worker) will now throw ReferenceError, which is correct for Node compat but is a breaking change.

Other factors

The PR is well-motivated (fixes #11005 / the ffjavascript ecosystem), thoroughly tested (own-property absence, prototype-swap pattern, parentPort round-trip, attribute-listener slot semantics, Web Worker still has its globals), and the author already responded to bot feedback. CI on d5126b4 flagged a napi test failure that adcd209 addresses via the test/napi/.../common/index.js change. The bug-hunting system found nothing. Still, the combination of core-runtime C++ changes, a static-table restructuring, a codegen namespace change, and an intentional behavior break is beyond what I'd approve without a maintainer's eyes.

CI status on adcd209: the two node-api suite failures from the previous run (the test common referenced Web Worker globals as bare identifiers, which now throw inside worker_threads workers) are fixed and green on all lanes. The remaining red in build 81130 is unrelated to this diff: two build agents (macOS aarch64, FreeBSD aarch64) expired before starting, a known-flaky parallel.test.ts, and two PTY timeouts in terminal.test.ts on the same unhealthy macOS pool (no worker code involved, reported separately). The diff itself is green and ready for review.

Node.js worker_threads workers have the same globalThis shape as the
main thread: no self, postMessage, addEventListener, removeEventListener,
dispatchEvent, onmessage, or onerror. Bun was exposing all of these as
own properties of globalThis inside every worker, which breaks packages
such as web-worker (used by ffjavascript) that polyfill a WorkerGlobalScope
by swapping globalThis' prototype; the own-property native dispatchEvent
shadowed the polyfill and rejected its plain-object events.

The backing EventTarget (globalEventScope) is unchanged; parentPort now
reaches it through direct native bindings instead of the deleted globals.
Web Workers created via the global Worker constructor keep their existing
globals.

Fixes #11005
Deleting the static hash-table entries forced reifyAllStaticProperties on
the worker global at startup, eagerly materializing every lazy constructor
in bunGlobalObjectTable. Thread the worker kind into GlobalObject::create
and gate the installs in addBuiltinGlobals instead, moving the four
EventTarget functions out of the static table so they can share the guard.

Also route parentPort.onmessage through the native setEventHandlerAttribute
path rather than a JS addEventListener/removeEventListener pair, so it
keeps the attribute-listener slot semantics (separate from listeners added
via addEventListener, position preserved on reassignment).
The node-api test common referenced addEventListener, postMessage,
onmessage, etc. as bare identifiers, which now throw ReferenceError
inside worker_threads workers. Use property accesses so absent globals
read as undefined. Also drop a stale TODO and apply review feedback on
the worker fixtures.

Rebased onto main (738 commits behind). Conflicts were in test/js/node/worker_threads/worker_threads.test.ts (both sides added tests at the end; kept both) and src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.lut.txt (main added DontEnum to several stream constructors; kept main's attributes, dropped the four EventTarget entries).

Also fixed one rebase artifact: new Worker(new URL(...).href) now throws ERR_WORKER_PATH on main for string file:// URLs, so the fixture test passes a URL object instead.

Re-verified against main:

Comment thread test/js/node/worker_threads/worker_threads.test.ts
ASAN/debug lanes emit benign warnings on fd 2; surface stderr only when
the spawned process fails, matching the file's convention.

Thanks — f14ff95 resolves the stderr rebase artifact; the test now uses the file-local conditional form. No further issues found, but this reshapes globalThis for every node:worker_threads worker and moves four entries out of the static bunGlobalObjectTable, so it's worth a human look before landing.

Checked: m_isNodeWorker is set before finishCreation() and defaults to false in every other GlobalObject::create overload, so main thread / Web Workers / node:vm contexts keep the four functions.
Checked: the new jsFunctionSetGlobalOnMessage/OnMessageError host functions preserve the setEventHandlerAttribute + writeBarrier + ensureStillAliveHere sequence from setGlobalOnMessage.
Checked: putDirectNativeFunction with attribute 0 gives the same writable/enumerable/configurable shape the removed Function .lut entries had.

Extended reasoning...

Overview

The PR gates seven Web Worker globals (self, addEventListener, removeEventListener, dispatchEvent, postMessage, onmessage, onerror) on a new m_isNodeWorker bit so node:worker_threads workers get a Node-shaped globalThis. Four of those move from ZigGlobalObject.lut.txt into the guarded block in addBuiltinGlobals. fakeParentPort() is rewired to reach the backing globalEventScope via new $newCppFunction host functions instead of reading the (now-absent) globals off self. A codegen tweak adds using namespace Zig; so the generated JS2Native wrapper can resolve those declarations. Tests cover both the negative (globals absent, prototype-swap works) and positive (Web Workers unchanged, parentPort.onmessage uses the attribute-listener slot) contracts, and existing fixtures that used bare postMessage inside worker_threads eval strings are updated to go through parentPort.

Since my last review

My 08-01 inline comment flagged an unconditional stderr: "" in the Web Worker globals test as a rebase artifact contradicting the author's own 07-25 resolution. f14ff95 switched it to the file-local stderr: exitCode === 0 ? "" : stderr form; verified in the current diff.

Security risks

None identified. The change removes globals from a context (node workers) rather than adding capability. The new host functions route through the same globalEventScope machinery the removed accessors used; $newCppFunction is a build-time codegen macro, not user-reachable.

Level of scrutiny

Moderate-to-high. ZigGlobalObject.{cpp,h,lut.txt} is core runtime initialization touched by every VM startup, and moving entries out of the static hash table changes the property-installation path for the main thread too (the author's self-review already caught and avoided the reifyAllStaticProperties de-opt). It is also a deliberate user-visible behavior change: code that relied on Bun's non-standard postMessage/self inside worker_threads workers will break. That's the correct Node-compat outcome, but a maintainer should sign off on the compatibility trade-off and the .lut.txt reshuffle.

Other factors

Test coverage is good (own-property absence, the web-worker prototype-swap pattern, parentPort message round-trip, attribute-listener-slot semantics, Web Worker positive control). The author re-verified against main after the 738-commit rebase and updated the vendored napi test common that referenced these globals as bare identifiers. All CodeRabbit threads are resolved. CI on f14ff95 is building; prior build was green modulo unrelated infra flakes per the author's 07-26 note.

Status after the rebase onto current main: CI on f14ff95 is green for everything this diff touches (worker_threads, Web Workers, and the node-api suites). The remaining red in build 86891 is unrelated: a bun-upgrade test failing on windows-aarch64 because canary release assets are missing for that platform (reported separately), and a set of tests the CI tool itself tags as flaky, each passing on retry or when run alone. Ready for review.

A fresh change for the same shape is open at #43600. It builds on the isNodeWorkerVM flag that landed after this PR and adds a brand so a 3-argument globalThis.Worker stays a Web Worker.

Jarred-Sumner added a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 20, 2026
… and CLI (#46021)

### What does this PR do?

Hardening. This collects the open pull requests that fix a crash in Bun
into one change, and fixes about 20 more crashes that had no pull
request.

"Crash" here means a segfault, a Rust panic, an abort, a failed
assertion, memory corruption that a sanitizer reports, a native stack
overflow, or an exception that ends the process and that the program
can't catch. With this PR those cases throw a normal error, print a
normal CLI error and exit 1, or just work.

306 pull requests are included: 227 whole, and 79 cut down to the crash
fix where the rest was a refactor, a feature or a behavior change. Each
one was checked against current `main` first. 45 more turned out to be
fixed already, and 17 were duplicates. The full list is at the bottom.

#### Crashes you could hit in normal use

- **`bun build` with macros and a `.env` file crashed at random.** In a
repro with many macro modules, more than a third of the builds crashed.
Now 3,000 of 3,000 produce the right bundle. (#45960)
- **`bun run` and `bunx` aborted if a signal arrived while the child was
being spawned.** (#38926, #45965)
- **`bun build --compile ./index.js ./public/*` panicked** if an
embedded file's name wasn't valid UTF-8.
- **A truncated or corrupted compiled executable** died with SIGBUS or a
panic at startup. It now prints an error. (#31787, #38251, #41360)
- **Dev server:** several `Option::unwrap()` panics after a failed or
deleted import (#38046, #44744, #44746), a segfault when an `onLoad`
plugin throws while another bundle is queued, a request that hung and
then panicked with `bundle active`, and `server.stop()` that never
resolved after a client aborted a waiting request.
- **`Bun.serve`:** `server.fetch(url, { headers: new Headers() })`
followed by a GC segfaulted (#40888). Routes were used after free after
`server.reload()` with `tls.serverName` (#38636).
- **`text()` and `json()` on a stream of string chunks** could abort the
process, a regression in 1.4.0. (#44269)
- **`Bun.Transpiler` with `exports.eliminate` or `exports.replace`**
aborted on `export default 1` and on most re-export clauses. (#44137)
- **A decorated `declare` field in a class expression** with
`experimentalDecorators` panicked. (#38095)
- **YAML and JSON5 files with a key that isn't a string** panicked with
`--no-bundle` and in `Bun.Transpiler`. (#41827)
- **`Bun.FileSystemRouter`:** reading `.params` segfaulted when a
rejected route candidate left its parameters behind. (#39290, #39291)
- **Native addons that call `uv_async_*`, `uv_timer_*`, `uv_idle_*`,
`uv_prepare_*`, `uv_check_*`, `uv_queue_work` or `uv_cwd`** aborted with
"unsupported uv function" on Linux and macOS. They're implemented now.
(#36609, #39652, #39892)
- **`--watch` and `--hot`** panicked when the system was out of inotify
instances or file descriptors, or when the reload `exec` failed. They
print an error now. (#39629, #39975, #44837)
- **Paths longer than the path buffer** panicked in `bun install`, the
resolver, the bundler, `--compile`, `tsconfig.json` `paths` and
`baseUrl`, `package.json` `main` and `sideEffects`, `bun run --filter`,
`bun pm diff`, source maps and snapshots. They're ordinary errors now,
or they work. (#36340, #37529, #39104, #39650, #43067)
- **A Worker that creates a `ShadowRealm` and imports
`node:worker_threads` in it** segfaulted.
- **`structuredClone` or `postMessage` of an X25519 key** gave an object
that aborted the process when read. (#45624)
- **`node:stream` web adapters and `node:http2`** could end the process
with an exception that no handler could catch. (#45076, #45975)
- **Windows:** a watcher panic in a burst of file changes (#44344), a
segfault after the machine resumes from sleep (#33015), crashes in the
shell's pipe reader (#39638, #43606), and addons that import from
`node.exe` without the delay-load hook (#35618).

Most of the rest needs unusual input: strings near the 2 GiB limit,
buffers that another thread or a getter resizes or detaches in the
middle of a call, `worker.terminate()` at a bad moment, running out of
memory or file descriptors, very deep nesting, or hostile arguments to
`bun:ffi`, `node:vm` and `bun:sqlite`.

#### Behavior changes

Things that didn't crash before and behave differently now:

- `new` on native functions that aren't constructors throws a
`TypeError`, as in Node: `util.types.*`, `buffer.isAscii`, `isUtf8`,
`transcode`, `resolveObjectURL`, `bun:jsc` exports, `cc()` symbols. It
used to return the call's result. They also stop printing as `[class
hostname]`. (#34575)
- `` $`cmd` `` throws `ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE` if an environment
variable's name or value contains a NUL byte. It used to cut the value
at the NUL. (#44981)
- `cc()` functions throw a `TypeError` for arguments that used to reach
C as garbage, and `read.*(ptr, NaN)` throws. (#37989, #38057, #40773)
- As PID 1, `bun` exits with 128 + the signal number on Ctrl+C or
`docker stop`. (#38877)
- A `NODE_MODULE` addon that's already loaded by the main thread throws
`ERR_DLOPEN_FAILED` when a live Worker loads it too, as in Node.
(#39968)
- An exception from a `node:vm` context reaches `uncaughtException`
handlers. (#39992) `vm.constants.DONT_CONTEXTIFY` returns the real
global proxy. (#34623)
- `createPrivateKey` rejects an EC JWK whose private value doesn't match
its public point. (#33752)
- `@dec static {}` is a syntax error, as in TypeScript and esbuild.
(#44883)
- `clearTimeout` ignores 0 and negative ids, and timer ids no longer
wrap. (#44771)
- HEAD for a `Response` whose body is an S3-backed `Blob` reports the
length that GET sends. (#44734)
- `bun:sqlite` and `node:sqlite`: if `iterate()` left a write unfinished
on a connection that has a hook, a user function or an authorizer, the
write is finished on the connection's next call instead of during
garbage collection. If the database is gone too, it's rolled back.
- `bun test --bail` runs exit listeners and closes SQLite databases.
(#39010)
- Dev server: a request for a client script waits while a bundle is in
flight (#42733), query strings reach framework routes (#33232), and a
request gets a 500 instead of hanging when plugins fail (#36812).

#### File formats

- `.jsc` bytecode files get a 24-byte footer so they can be verified
before decoding. Files from an older Bun are ignored and the source is
parsed instead. (#39396)
- `node:vm` `cachedData` gets an 8-byte checksum. A blob from an older
Bun is rejected, which the API allows. (#32839)
- The built-in modules section of a compiled executable changes from
format 1 to 2 and carries an engine stamp. (#44907)

#### Performance

Measured in instructions per operation on release builds of this branch
and its base, with an A/A run for the noise floor (0.0 to 0.2 %).

No change: `Bun.serve`, `node:http`, WebSocket echo and publish, `bun
build` of 3,807 modules, `bun run` with 2,000 imports, `readdir` /
`Glob` / `fs.cp` over 23,689 entries, startup and RSS. The binary grows
by 176 KB (0.17 %).

| Faster | Instructions |
| --- | --- |
| WebSocket echo of a 1 MB non-ASCII text message | −72 % |
| `Bun.inspect` of a large non-ASCII string | −39 % |
| `Bun.markdown.html` on large non-ASCII input | −33 % |
| `` $`cmd` `` with 300 environment variables | −6 % |
| `fs.readSync` | −5 % |
| `TextEncoder.encodeInto`, short ASCII strings | −4 % |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, 16-byte inputs | −17 % |

| Slower | Instructions | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `cc()` calls | +5 to +51 per call | Argument count and type checks,
and a check for `close()` (#37989, #38057, #43802, #44921). `dlopen()`
calls don't change |
| `process.env.X = v` | 38 → 593 per write | Writes aren't cached. Reads
don't change (#38871) |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, inputs of 1 KB or more | +4 to +9 % | Password
and salt are copied (#40554) |
| `bun build` with an object `--define` used thousands of times | +4.5 %

#### Not included

- Fixes that need a WebKit change: #39967, #42534, #42982, #43764,
#43786, #44226. #42185 too: a typed array that has no `ArrayBuffer` yet
can't be pinned, so `view.buffer.transfer()` during an async call can
still free its bytes. Creating the `ArrayBuffer` up front costs 7 to 12
% on every async `fs` call, so the fix belongs in JSC: an `ArrayBuffer`
created while the view is borrowed should start out pinned.
- #45442 (`calc()` sums as a flat list): it changes minified output for
real stylesheets to survive a `calc()` with 25,000 terms. It deserves
its own review.
- #40023 (Windows event loop redesign), #29928 (Windows exit path),
#40534, #43963, #39571, #42904, #42834, #36355, #43266: refactors or
features whose crash is already covered or isn't a crash.
- The pull requests marked *(crash fix only)* below should stay open for
their other half.

### How did you verify your code works?

- **Tests.** Every fix has a test that fails on `main` (a release or an
ASAN build) and passes on this branch, except where that isn't
practical: code that only runs on Windows or macOS, inputs that need
several GB of memory, and a few rare races. Those were checked by hand
or by reading.
- **Stored repro scripts.** 230 crash repros ran on release and ASAN
builds of this branch and of `main`, side by side. Release: 88 no longer
crash. ASAN: 106 no longer crash. None crashes that didn't before. What
still crashes needs WebKit, is SQLite's own bug, or isn't a crash. The
ASAN number is from a later commit than the release number.
- **Dev server.** Because one fix makes requests wait, 2,171 generated
programs ran random interleavings of edits, build errors, failing
plugins, reloads, stops and disconnects with about 120,000 requests. No
request hung, was answered twice or got a stale body. `main` hung in 82
of 1,161 programs. This also found the four dev server bugs listed
above.
- **Path helpers.** 336,000 boundary cases with buffers of exactly the
computed size, and 12,003 random calls through 30 JS APIs on an ASAN
build, compared with `main`. No sanitizer report, and the results match
wherever `main` doesn't panic.
- **What worked on 1.4.3 still works.** Reviewers compared behavior with
1.4.3 and took out what changed it: for example an output directory
layout change for 9 or more entry points, a `server.reload()` change,
and a changed error message for `import("file:///50%deposit.ts")`.
- **Not run locally:** the Windows, macOS and FreeBSD code paths. CI
compiles and tests them.
