What?

BaseControl doesn't support the as prop, but its types and generated README listed it as a required prop.

Why?

UnconnectedBaseControl used WordPressComponentProps< BaseControlProps, null >, which defaults to polymorphic, so as leaked into the public type and docs. BaseControl.VisualLabel does support as and is unchanged.

How?

• Pass false for the polymorphism flag on BaseControl's props. With Components: Fix polymorphism typings leaking as prop #82704 merged, this is now enough to keep as out of the connected component's type.
• Regenerate the README (npm run docs:components) and the Storybook manifest snapshot.
• Add a changelog entry.

Testing Instructions

1. npm run typecheck passes.
2. <BaseControl as="section" /> is now a type error; <BaseControl.VisualLabel as="legend" /> still type checks.
3. The BaseControl README no longer lists as.

Hi @Mayank-Tripathi32, I looked into this and ran the build script on trunk everything seems to work well, Then I checkout into your PR and ran the build command it failed and failed specifically on type build then I remove your type change back to props: WordPressComponentProps< BaseControlProps, null >, The build was successful.

I think the Build is failing because of the type change in your PR.

So original change I proposed now does not work as expected, it only downgrades as from required to optional-any, but never removes it.

contextConnect re-infers IsPolymorphic out of the props type, and that inference fails, it falls back to the boolean constraint. Checking it:

We can do a one-line change in wordpress-component.ts making the check non-distributive ([ IsPolymorphic ] extends [ true ]). It's a no-op wherever the flag is a concrete true/false, it only affects the boolean fallback. It also drops the same bogus as: any from Menu's docs, which is the only other README that changed.

Please note, I only know on docs part. It may or may not break the build which I will need to test aswell if we go with change in type.

@aduth Would you be able to look at this and decide whether we want to continue with the WordPressComponent type change or revert it? No strong opinion from my end, but the full impact is yet unclear and the 6% memory reduction is perhaps not worth it if there are complications.

I responded at https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/pull/80364/changes#r3919472601 , though I hadn't seen this discussion here before responding at the time. There's a few moving pieces here, but as I understand it there's a combination of issues:

1. BaseControl defining it's props using WordPressComponentProps default polymorphism as true causing as to surface, which is what this pull request was initially targeting by specifying polymorphism explicitly as false.
2. Separately, an issue with the typings implemented in Components: Skip polymorphism prop typings on intersection #80364 and Components: Update polymorphism types to allow all attributes when specifying as #80705 around how TypeScript evaluates IsPolymorphic extends true when IsPolymorphic is interpreted as a boolean type. I think the suggested change from @Mayank-Tripathi32 in BaseControl: Update Prop docs #70064 (comment) would be a safe way to correct this without regressing the performance benefits we got from the earlier pull requests.

Does that help unblock? We could also do that in a separate pull request to keep the focus of each change more contained.
