What?

Adds @wordpress/core-fields, a new private package with the fields WordPress core registers through the Entity fields API. Each field has a PHP declaration and a script module with its JavaScript parts. With this PR, the /wp/v2/entity-fields route returns the default fields of every post type exposed in the REST API, plus the collections for pages, templates, template parts, patterns, attachments, and the site.

Why?

The server-side registry and the REST route are on trunk, but no fields are registered yet, so the route returns nothing for core entities. This PR registers core's own fields through the same public API a plugin uses, so the server side works on its own. Nothing on the client reads these fields yet, so the editor does not change. A stacked PR adds the loaders that fetch the route and import the script modules.

The package is "private": true, so it is not published to npm until the API settles. The plugin still builds and ships its PHP and script modules.

How?

• packages/core-fields/src/<collection>/ holds one folder per field collection: post_type_supports, page, wp_template, wp_template_part, wp_block, attachment, and root_site. Each field folder has a field.php declaration and, where needed, the JavaScript parts PHP cannot serialize (render, Edit, getElements). Each collection has its own script module (@wordpress/core-fields/<collection>).
• src/index.php runs on wp_entity_fields_api_init at priority 0, so a plugin hooking the action at the default priority can update or unregister core fields. It:
  • registers the defaults of every post type, based on what the post type supports;
  • unregisters the defaults that core post types replace or do not get;
  • registers each collection with wp_register_entity_field_collection().
• The build copies the PHP to build/scripts/core-fields with its functions prefixed (wpCopyFiles), and lib/load.php loads it.
• @wordpress/core-fields is added to the private APIs allowlist. It unlocks MediaEdit and MediaEditControl from @wordpress/media-utils.
• The entity fields API tests now run against the real core registrations instead of a fixture.

Testing Instructions

1. Build the plugin (npm run build) and check that build/scripts/core-fields/index.php and build/modules/core-fields/ exist.
2. Run the PHP tests: npm run test:unit:php:base -- --filter 'Tests_Entity_Fields_API|Tests_REST_Entity_Fields_Controller'.
3. Logged in as an administrator, request /wp-json/wp/v2/entity-fields?kind=postType&name=post and check that it lists the default post fields (title, status, author, featured_media, …) with the @wordpress/core-fields/post_type_supports module.
4. Repeat for name=page, name=attachment, name=wp_template, and kind=root&name=site. Each returns its own collection.
5. Open the post editor and the site editor and check that nothing has changed: no client code consumes these fields yet.

The fields code comes from the core/fields package, I know it is temporary and they will be removed in the future as part of a clean up. But on #84643 I opted to move the actions directly on the PR, I found it safe considering it is a bundled package and people realying on them could just keep the current version. Would doing the same here work? It would reduce the diff size on the PR and avoid future removal work.

That'd work too. I am just worried about making a potential revert easy: if we have a single PR that removes/switches everything it's easy than having multiple of them. By separating addition/removal we can revert the removal while keeping the PRs that added new stuff. Not a strong opinion, though. Whatever works to help us ship and make a potential revert easy.

A revert of this magnitude will always be very complex 😅 I fear keeping the fields in both places, may easily create divergencies one file is updated while other is not, but I understand your point and I accept the current solution.

Minor non blocker: once core ships the same fields, core's callback and this one both run on wp_entity_fields_api_init, so every field is registered twice and the second registration triggers _doing_it_wrong. I guess we should remove core's action before registering, like lib/blocks.php and lib/icons.php do, but it can be addressed during the backport.

The PR seems big bug most is moving code from wordpress/fields, left some comments (and pushed some commits with small fixes).
Smoked tested things and things seem to work.Left some comments for consideration but they are non blocking.
