Problem

Opening a local PDF from a chat message in the desktop Browser panel can reload the entire application about once a second. The persisted preview tab is recreated after each reload, starting the loop again. Closing the actual PDF tab stops it; hiding the panel does not.

Fixes #21721 (matching reported symptom; independently reproduced here).

Change

Handle root-page Page.reload at the Electron guest adapter with WebContents.reload() or reloadIgnoringCache(), preserving ignoreCache. Commands for child CDP sessions keep their existing direct routing. Web and mobile behavior is unchanged.

Why it happens

The PDF startup recovery added in #21095 (1e2f88fde7cb9da832c88d11eb7188afca6f8810) calls Playwright page.reload() when interception attaches to an already-loading PDF. That emits CDP Page.reload. With Electron's debugger attached to a webview guest, this command reloads the embedder window rather than just the guest.

The measured sequence in the full development desktop was:

1. 13:24:43.158Z: guest WebContents 3 receives Page.reload.
2. 13:24:43.160Z: main WebContents 1 enters beforeunload; a new main-frame navigation follows at .161.
3. .172–.174: debugger target closes and the guest is destroyed.
4. .206: the main document becomes ready again; Navigation Timing reports reload. The saved PDF tab mounts and repeats the cycle.

The renderer process stayed alive. The initializeDebugger.defaultBackground / target closed errors follow the reload rather than establishing its cause. Blocking only this command stopped the loop; replacing it with the native guest reload also stopped it while loading the PDF.

The triggering T3 change is #21095, but the underlying Electron behavior also reproduces in a minimal Electron 40.10.2 app and is described in the closed, unmerged upstream proposal electron/electron#51075. This is not evidence of a new Electron 44 regression.

Scope and approval

This is a small, focused fix of an obvious bug under the contribution-policy exception: a preview reload must stay inside its guest. It adds no setting, feature, protocol, or fallback behavior. #21721 is the related report; no maintainer scope approval is being claimed.

Verification

• Before: full macOS arm64 development desktop at 2532e64099a2, Electron 44.4.5: 47 additional main reloads in 50 seconds. The affected installed Nightly was 0.1.1-nightly.20261019.3360 / 1451e7cb2303; the relevant desktop/preview code is identical between these revisions.
• After: the same full desktop plus this fix opens the neutral PDF, survives closing/reopening its tab and manual Refresh, with one main dom-ready total throughout approximately 160 seconds after the first PDF click. Each startup recovery reload targets the guest. The 30-second after video shows the stable PDF.
• A real Electron harness imports the actual sendPageCommand implementation: before the fix it fails on embedder navigation; after the fix PDF and HTML both pass normal and cache-bypassing reloads, each with one host load and two guest loads. These are native checks in addition to the mocked adapter regression tests.
• vp test run apps/desktop/src/preview/GuestInput.test.ts apps/desktop/src/preview/CdpRelay.test.ts apps/desktop/src/preview/DesktopBrowserHost.test.ts: 20 passed.
• Targeted lint and desktop typecheck passed. No repository-wide suite was run.
• Recordings use a locally seeded synthetic project/message and a blank one-page PDF, with no provider turn. The signed test URL is masked. No customer data, database, or credentials are included. Before: 17 seconds, 13 main reloads; after: 30 seconds. Both retain actual capture timestamps at 1× speed.

The final commit is rebased on 5307c233b1; the intervening upstream commit only changes mobile shared-file behavior. Native verification was on macOS; Windows and Linux were not run. Optional CDP loaderId / scriptToEvaluateOnLoad parameters are not implemented by this native translation; the current Playwright reload path sends neither.
