fix(frontend): preserve response framing while tracking inflight requests - #18177
Preserve HTTP response framing while the frontend tracks inflight requests. The previous data-stream conversion discarded exact body lengths and trailer frames. Oversized audio uploads could receive HTTP 413 and then fail to read its JSON body with hyper::Error(Body, "connection error").
Key Changes
Approximately 36 added core Rust lines, excluding tests, comments and whitespace.
service_v2.rs wraps the original body with its inflight permit and forwards poll_frame, size_hint and is_end_stream.
The existing oversized-transcription HTTP regression now requires a known response length and a complete JSON body. Focused body tests cover trailer delivery and admission release after completion or early drop.
Declare http-body directly for its Frame and SizeHint types. This uses version 1.0.1, already present in the lock file.
Validation
Observed CI impact
The audit snapshot covers Pre Merge runs created from 2026-11-03 06:24:23 UTC, when the transcription test landed on main, through the 2026-11-05 scan. It enumerated 1,220 workflow runs and inspected 143 failed workspace Rust jobs, including earlier rerun attempts and cancelled workflows. Each counted failure explicitly names upload_too_large_for_the_request_plane_returns_payload_too_large and the same response-body connection error.

PR #17923 was affected twice, at job 125776826204 and job 127032591212. Both had already accepted the expected 413 status before failing at response.json().await.unwrap(). The same failure also occurred on main.
The snapshot counts failed jobs, including repeated attempts on the same PR, using the exact transcription-test and connection-error signature.
All 47 confirmed CI failures with PR or branch attribution
The initial push failed the Python bindings Clippy job before compilation because its independent Cargo.lock did not record dynamo-llm's new direct http-body dependency. The job used --locked. Failed job.
Regenerated both Python and kvbm binding lockfiles against their current manifests. Python bindings cargo metadata --locked succeeds for the default, ais-forward-pass, custom-policy,select-service and --no-default-features configurations. The kvbm binding and runtime-examples workspaces also pass locked metadata resolution. These follow-up checks validate dependency resolution. Full bindings compilation and Clippy are left to the new CI run.
EOF review follow-up
The body wrapper now stores its permit in an Option and releases it when poll_frame returns EOF. The existing completion test asserts that inflight reaches zero while the completed wrapper is still alive, then checks that dropping it keeps the count at zero. Early-drop cleanup is covered by the existing cancellation case.
The new pre-drop assertion fails on the previous implementation with an inflight count of 1 instead of 0 (0.07 s). With the EOF fix, the actual Dynamo tests on macOS 26.5.2 arm64, rustc 1.96.1 and --no-default-features pass as follows.

Linux isolated reproduction, one process × 1,000 uploads
Both the original and candidate completed 1,000/1,000; this low-contention run did not expose the timing-sensitive failure
Regression with the original middleware body conversion restored
Fails deterministically, 0.31 s, because the fixed-size JSON response has no known length. Final middleware restored afterward.
The new body tests individually completed in 0.02 s and below the test runner's 0.01-second resolution. inflight_body_preserves_trailers_and_holds_admission checks data and trailer frames while admission stays held through body consumption. inflight_body_preserves_length_and_releases_on_early_drop checks the exact size hint and cancellation cleanup. The existing oversized-upload test now requires the fixed-size JSON response's length and successfully reads and parses the complete body.
The Linux isolation harness uses Axum 0.8.4, Hyper 1.10.1, Reqwest 0.12.28 and a current-thread Tokio runtime. It uploads a 24 MiB multipart body to a route with a 23 MiB limit. The final candidate runs the body wrapper extracted from this patch, with an inert permit in place of the full service observer. This isolates response framing. The full Dynamo HTTP tests run separately on macOS as listed above. Baseline responses were chunked. Candidate responses carried Content-Length: 33 and their JSON bodies were checked.
Full Dynamo Linux CI execution, HTTP/2 trailer transport and serving-performance measurements remain for follow-up validation. The Linux numbers above are from the scoped harness. They are a single observed stress batch per arm rather than a guarantee of zero failures under every workload.
Searched open PRs and issues for size_hint, inflight body wrapping and transcription failures. No matching framing-preservation fix was found at preparation time.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Inference capacity remains held until a streaming response body finishes or is canceled, improving admission control.
Response frames and trailers are preserved, and capacity is released when a response completes or is dropped.
Oversized-upload error responses are checked to ensure the advertised content length matches the received body, which is also validated as JSON.
The inference middleware wraps response bodies while retaining the inflight permit. The wrapper forwards body frames, trailers, end-of-stream status, and size hints. Tests cover permit release on completion or early drop and content-length validation for oversized-upload 413 responses.

Summary
Wrap and validate inference responses lib/llm/Cargo.toml, lib/llm/src/http/service/service_v2.rs, lib/llm/tests/http-transcriptions.rs
The middleware wraps the original body with the inflight permit and forwards frames, trailers, end-of-stream status, and size hints. Tests check frame preservation, permit release, and that the oversized-upload 413 response's content length matches its body size.
The change is mergeable after normal checks. A middleware-level trailer test would improve coverage.

Explanation
[#18175] Requirement 1: a response-body wrapper that owns the inflight permit. The summary shows track_inflight_inference in service_v2.rs wrapping each response body with InflightResponseBody, which holds the permit until the body is dropped. Requirement 2: forward poll_frame, size_hint, and is_end_stream. The summary states that the wrapper delegates frame polling, end-of-stream status, and size hints to the original Axum body. This replaces the prior into_data_stream() and Body::from_stream() conversion. Requirement 3: validate the HTTP path, streaming and trailers, and permit cleanup. lib/llm/tests/http-transcriptions.rs now requires a known response length and a complete JSON body for the oversized-upload 413 response. Two focused service_v2 body tests cover trailer delivery with admission held through consumption, and exact size hint with permit release on early drop. The http-body dependency is declared directly in lib/llm/Cargo.toml (version 1), which supplies the Frame and SizeHint types. The PR description reports passing runs of the transcription, service_v2 and http-service test targets. Those results are author-reported and were not re-run in this assessment. The CI failure counts in the description are context, not coding requirements. No unmet coding requirement is identified.

Explanation
The reviewed source changes map to #18175. lib/llm/src/http/service/service_v2.rs contains the wrapper and its focused tests. lib/llm/tests/http-transcriptions.rs contains the regression assertion for length and complete JSON body. lib/llm/Cargo.toml declares http-body for the wrapper types. No unrelated product behavior or unrelated source file is identified in the whole-pull-request summary, which compares merge base 2fb3b132fc to head f2c21790586e6b9deef3dc126689633b6f216777. The lockfile updates for the Python and kvbm bindings are in ignored files (Cargo.lock, lib/bindings/kvbm/Cargo.lock, lib/bindings/python/Cargo.lock, excluded by !**/*.lock). Their contents were not inspected. The PR description links them to the new direct http-body dependency, which supports this assessment. This conclusion does not depend on the excluded contents. The description's CI-audit table and PR-attribution list are report material, not code changes.

Release the permit when the body completes.
If a caller polls through None but retains InflightResponseBody, Line 224 leaves _permit alive. wait_inflight_zero_or_timeout can then wait for a response that has finished. Store the permit in an Option and take it when poll_frame returns Poll::Ready(None). Keep drop as the early-exit path. The new completion test checks the count only after drop(body), so it does not detect this case.

Test trailer preservation through track_inflight_inference.
inflight_body_preserves_trailers_and_holds_admission only tests InflightResponseBody directly. A regression to body.into_data_stream() in track_inflight_inference would still pass this test while dropping trailers from real responses. Add a middleware-level test that returns a data frame followed by a trailer and asserts that both frames remain on the response body.
