feat(global-router): session affinity on the router core - #17598
Affinity is the last policy to move to the router core. Its plugin applies the affinity selector's headroom rule over the same signals, and the core's session table (soft mode) holds each session's pin. The current selectors do not change.
HeadroomPicker (selection_core/policies.rs): AffinitySelector's rule through the shared placement code. The default is the session's bound pool (the request's affinity target), else the cheapest candidate.
Pins:
The core binds a session only on a booking. A session therefore books (select_and_reserve) only to set, move or refresh its pin; every other request is an advisory select that honours the pin.
PinRefresh tracks when each pin was last booked, and refreshes it once per half --session-idle-secs.
I checked the core: the session's affinity lease lives on the booking, and when the booking is freed the binding stays in the session table with its own idle expiry (--session-idle-secs, starting from the release).
So the frontend frees each booking as soon as select_and_reserve returns. No Reservation is held for the response, and SelectionCoreSelector::select keeps its signature Option<(PoolTarget, InFlightGuard)>.
A core test shows the pin holding after its booking is freed.
If a free fails, the core's 300 s expiry cleans the booking up.
Metric: dynamo_global_frontend_pin_bookings_total, read from the core at scrape time and documented in the metrics catalog.
Session IDs: with --use-selection-core, a session ID longer than the core's 256-byte limit is refused with 400, not passed to the core (which would turn it into a 503). The current path does not change.
cargo test --release -p dynamo-global-router -p dynamo-global-frontend -p dynamo-global-common: all pass (common 10, router 31, frontend lib 12 + main 4 + forwarding 15).
New tests:
Through the core, affinity moves a session only for twice the room and does not flip back, matching affinity.rs's case. Its second step passes only if the pin survives its freed booking.
The core books only to set or move a pin.
A forwarding test checks 2 pin bookings for 2 sessions × 2 turns, and a 400 for a 257-byte session ID.
cargo fmt --check and cargo clippy --release --all-targets -- -D warnings are clean.

No Dockerfile step failed: the BuildKit server sent a GOAWAY (graceful_stop) and closed the connection while the amd64 pre_runtime and arm64 runtime_wheel_builder stages were running, so in-flight steps were cancelled. This is an infrastructure failure (builder shut down/restarted); a rerun of failed jobs is likely enough.

The core's session table holds at most 65,536 sessions per model (MAX_SESSION_AFFINITY_ENTRIES, which the builder can't change). When it is full, new sessions route unpinned and the only sign is a debug!. With the default 1800 s idle timeout it fills at a sustained ~36 new sessions/s per model, and after #17599 the cap is shared across all replicas.
This might also be an issue for the local frontend, but it's definitely a problem here, since legacy pins have no limit. Is that enough for the target fleet? At minimum it should warn when the table fills.

Agreed it must not be silent. The cap is a const in lib/kv-router (MAX_SESSION_AFFINITY_ENTRIES) with no builder knob, and the core keeps the table-full error inside the affinity table, so this host cannot see it; this stack leaves lib/kv-router untouched. In e42aeb1 the cap is stated next to --session-idle-secs with what happens when the table is full (a new session places without a pin until idle ones expire; it degrades, it does not fail). The knob plus a table-full signal is a small separate kv-router PR I'd open after this stack. On sizing: the table fills only at ~36 new sessions/s per model sustained for the whole idle window; acceptable for the prototype fleet, not for production, hence the knob.
The embedded core now supports affinity-based pool selection with session pinning and headroom rules. Pool metadata is synchronized for picker use. The frontend configures affinity signals and rejects session IDs that exceed the core byte limit before routing.

The core maps workers to pools and regions, updates the mapping with catalog snapshots, and registers a headroom picker for affinity policies.
The core passes session IDs to picker requests, tracks and refreshes session pins, and books selections when a pin is new or changes. Tests cover pinning, movement, failover, and sessionless routing.

The frontend configures core affinity with shared pool signals, region, headroom factor, and idle duration. It rejects session IDs over the core byte limit before routing.
Unique session IDs can increase memory use and slow affinity routing. Bound the pin-refresh map before merging.

Cap PinRefresh so unique session IDs cannot grow it without limit.
When booked.len() >= CAPACITY and every entry is still fresh, retain removes nothing. Line 141 then inserts the new session anyway.
Unbounded memory:X-Dynamo-Session-ID is client-controlled, and each ID can be up to 256 bytes. A client that sends unique IDs grows the map without bound for the whole refresh window (half of --session-idle-secs, 900 s by default). The core table stops at MAX_SESSION_AFFINITY_ENTRIES, so the documented cap does not hold here.
Cost on every new session: Each new session at capacity runs an O(n) retain while holding the mutex that every affinity route call also takes.
If the map is still full after the purge, skip the insert. The session is then not tracked, fresh returns None, and it books on each request. That is the safe behavior, because the core cannot pin it either. To avoid repeated full scans, also record the time of the last purge and purge at most once per interval.
🔧 Proposed fix to bound the map
if booked.len() >= Self::CAPACITY && !booked.contains_key(session) {
let refresh = self.refresh;
booked.retain(|_, (_, at)| now.saturating_duration_since(*at) < refresh);
+ if booked.len() >= Self::CAPACITY {+ // Still full of fresh pins: leave this session untracked,+ // so it books on every request.+ return;+ }
}
booked.insert(session.to_owned(), (worker, now));

Update PinRefresh::record to keep booked at or below Self::CAPACITY: after
purging stale entries, return without inserting when the map remains full. Track
the last purge time and use it to avoid repeating the full-map purge more than
once per refresh interval, while still allowing existing session entries to be
updated.

the affinity selector's headroom rule over the same signals, and the core's
session table (soft mode) holds each session's pin. A session books only to
set, move or refresh its pin, and the booking is freed as soon as the pin
is committed: the binding outlives the booking and expires after the idle

selectors do not change.
