Overview:

Summary

Adds an OpenAI-compatible POST /v1/audio/transcriptions endpoint backed by a dedicated vLLM transcription worker. This is #11826 by @ptarasiewiczNV, rebased onto current main and handed over to drive to merge; his commits keep their authorship. Supersedes #11826.

  • Parse the OpenAI multipart request at the HTTP boundary and convert the audio to a transport-safe typed request.
  • Discover and route ModelType::Transcriptions workers through the existing media-worker path.
  • Collect the unary response with a generic collector that preserves typed backend errors and rejects empty or multi-item responses.
  • Expose --transcription-worker in the vLLM backend, delegating inference to vLLM's native OpenAIServingTranscription, with health checks and request cancellation.
  • A launch example (examples/backends/vllm/launch/agg_transcription.sh), Rust HTTP integration tests and Python unit tests.

Details:

The first seven commits are #11826 as reviewed there, rebased. One of its commits, "use catalog for transcription lookup", became empty during conflict resolution and is dropped. The last commit adapts the PR to changes on main and in vLLM since it was written:

  • vLLM 0.31 moved ErrorResponse to vllm.entrypoints.serve.engine.protocol. The old import made the guarded import block fail, so the transcription worker refused to start. The test imports it lazily, as test_realtime_handler does.
  • main's snapshot engine setup returns SnapshotEngineSetupResult (engine setup plus stat logger factory). The transcription worker unpacks it, binds the restored stat logger factory to the endpoint and syncs the FPM worker id, as the realtime worker does.
  • --served-model-name aliases are resolved to the primary model on /v1/audio/transcriptions after the readiness gate, as /v1/audio/speech and /v1/rerank do, so alias requests route and are metered under the primary name. New HTTP test.
  • Model::has_transcriptions_engine reads worker sets through the copy-on-write snapshot (worker_sets.load().values()), as the other engine checks do since perf(llm): copy-on-write worker-set membership in discovery::Model #16119.
  • The endpoint builds its response metrics collector from the request's in-flight guard, as the other endpoints do since feat(llm): stream serving load from the KV DC Relay #13187 removed Metrics::create_response_collector. Without this the branch no longer compiled after merging main.

A review follow-up commit makes a fresh transcription worker build and publish its StatLoggerFactory and clean up its Prometheus temp dir, as the realtime worker does, and adds ModelManager::remove_transcriptions_model. A second round registers the worker's engine metric exporters (setup_metrics_collection), so its vllm:* and dynamo_component_* metrics are exported, and returns 413 instead of 400 for a multipart upload over the HTTP body limit. A third round caps uploads at 23 MiB so the base64-encoded audio fits the request plane's default 32 MiB frame, with a 413 that names the limit, reports vLLM request errors (including VLLMValidationError) as 400 with their message, and drops the unneeded workspace multipart feature of axum.

Scope is unchanged from #11826: json and verbose_json response formats, non-streaming only, and the uploaded audio is buffered and base64-encoded across the request plane. Realtime and streaming transcription remain follow-up work.

The backend is a Python vLLM worker rather than the vLLM sidecar because vLLM's gRPC API has no transcription call. On vLLM main (v0.32.0), rust/proto/inference.proto has only Generate and GenerateStream, which take audio only as media aligned with placeholders in a single prompt and have no encoder prompt, so Whisper-style encoder-decoder transcription does not map onto them. vLLM's Rust HTTP server has no transcription route either; only its Python HTTP server serves /v1/audio/transcriptions. Moving to the sidecar is tracked in #17738, and it only swaps the worker: the frontend endpoint and the ModelType::Transcriptions contract stay the same.

Validation

  • Every Cargo workspace (., lib/bindings/python, lib/bindings/kvbm, lib/runtime/examples) resolves with cargo metadata --locked.
  • After the third review round, on Linux: cargo test -p dynamo-llm --no-default-features --lib (3797), --test http-service (37) and --test http-transcriptions (6) pass, every Cargo workspace resolves with --locked, and pre-commit and mypy are clean on the changed files.
  • After merging main on 2026-10-29, on Linux (main no longer builds on macOS: velo 0.20.0 uses a Linux-only socket option): cargo test -p dynamo-llm --no-default-features --lib (3797), --test http-service (37) and --test http-transcriptions (5) pass, every Cargo workspace resolves with --locked, and fmt is clean. The vLLM Python tests were not rerun locally; the local vLLM image's bindings predate main.
  • cargo test -p dynamo-llm --test http-transcriptions and --test http-service pass. Rerun after merging main on 2026-10-25, along with cargo test -p dynamo-llm --no-default-features --lib, cargo check --locked in lib/bindings/python, and cargo metadata --locked in every workspace.
  • cargo test -p dynamo-llm --lib: all pass apart from test_oversized_body_returns_json_413 (intermittent) and metrics_bind_failure_shuts_down_dynamic_and_in_process_runtimes, which fail the same way on main without this change (macOS).
  • cargo fmt --all -- --check, cargo clippy -p dynamo-llm --all-targets, and cargo check --locked in lib/bindings/python are clean.
  • In a vLLM 0.31 runtime image built with container/render.py from this branch one rebase earlier (the 12 main commits since touch none of its Python files), with this branch's current Python sources: test_vllm_transcription.py, test_vllm_worker_factory.py and test_vllm_unit.py pass (427 tests), and the vLLM component's unit and gpu_0 and pre_merge suite passes apart from test_tito_adapter_builds_preprocessed_image_input_without_reprocessing, an image-input test this change does not touch (a PyTorch non-writable-buffer warning promoted to an error).
  • End to end, with these commits on an early-October base: openai/whisper-large-v3 served through the frontend and the transcription worker on one A100, with json and verbose_json responses from the OpenAI client's multipart request, and an unknown model rejected.

Where should the reviewer start?

  • lib/llm/src/http/service/transcriptions.rs: the multipart endpoint, alias resolution and error mapping.
  • components/src/dynamo/vllm/transcription_handler.py and worker_factory.py: the worker.
  • The last commit for what changed relative to feat(vllm): add audio transcription serving #11826.

Explanation

Issue [#16283] requires an OpenAI-compatible POST /v1/audio/transcriptions endpoint and a vLLM transcription worker integrated with Dynamo routing and worker lifecycle. The PR adds multipart parsing, validation, ModelType::Transcriptions, discovery, readiness, alias routing, metrics, cancellation, health checks, worker registration, and cleanup. The worker delegates to vLLM native transcription serving. Rust integration tests and Python unit tests cover the endpoint and worker behavior.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue [#16283]. Frontend protocol, discovery, routing, readiness, metrics, and lifecycle changes support the transcription endpoint. vLLM configuration, health checks, worker handling, launch support, and tests support the transcription worker. Non-streaming json and verbose_json behavior is an explicit scope limit. No unrelated product change is demonstrated.

Explanation

The description is complete and on topic. It covers the overview, key changes, validation results, known limitations, follow-up work, related issues, and reviewer starting points. The template headings differ slightly because the author uses “Summary” and “Details” instead of “Key Changes” and “Issues and Ongoing Work,” but the required information is present.

Add remove_transcriptions_model for the new local registration.

add_transcriptions_model creates the __local_transcriptions_{model} WorkerSet. No matching per-type remove method exists. The other local surfaces each have one, for example remove_videos_model and remove_realtime_model. In-process callers therefore cannot unregister only the transcription surface. Add the counterpart method.

Bound each multipart part. Do not buffer it whole and then base64-encode it.

field.bytes() reads the complete upload into memory. encode then allocates about 1.33× more. Peak memory per request is therefore about 2.3× the body limit, and concurrent uploads multiply it. The PR scope accepts that buffering is required, because base64 has to cross the request plane. Two changes still reduce the risk:

  • Read the field with field.chunk() into a pre-sized buffer, and reject the field when it passes a dedicated audio size limit.
  • Apply a small cap to the text fields. A multi-megabyte prompt part is accepted today.

Confirm that get_body_limit() is sized for audio uploads.

Based on learnings: "flag reading entire request bodies into a Vec in memory".

@coderabbitai On the two nitpicks: remove_transcriptions_model is added in 25fa714 with an add/get/remove round-trip test. On multipart buffering, the transcriptions route already applies DefaultBodyLimit::max(get_body_limit()), so a request (audio and text parts together) is bounded by the configured body limit; streaming the audio across the request plane instead of buffering and base64-encoding it is the stated follow-up in this PR's scope, so I have left that for a separate change.

@NurullahMorshed Thanks for the clarification.

  • Model removal: I verified remove_transcriptions_model and the add/get/remove round-trip test. This addresses the missing-removal nitpick.
  • Multipart buffering: The route already applies DefaultBodyLimit::max(get_body_limit()) to the entire multipart body. My unbounded-request concern was incorrect. Streaming audio across the request plane can remain a separate change within the stated scope.

Would you like a GitHub issue for the streaming follow-up?

@ptarasiewiczNV Thanks for the CI run. At d6a8239 it failed only on dynamo-runtime / mypy: the runtime image that runs mypy has no fastapi, so the guarded from fastapi import UploadFile in the transcription handler reported import-not-found. b55edfd ignores that missing import on that line, as vllm/omni does for omegaconf; fastapi is a vLLM dependency, so it is present wherever the worker runs. mypy passes on the file without fastapi installed and reports the same error without the change. The vLLM runtime tests and deploy tests passed in that run. Could you /ok to test b55edfdd1 when you get a chance?

Ci is running. I have also validated the /v1/audio/transcriptions endpoint e2e on Whisper large-v3-turbo, Whisper large-v3, and Qwen3-ASR-1.7B on DGD.

  • E2E requests: Sent multipart uploads from a separate client pod through a Kubernetes Service. Tested direct HTTP and OpenAI SDK requests, WAV/OGG/FLAC, stereo 48 kHz audio, model aliases, and two concurrent requests with different audio.
  • Transcription correctness: Compared output against clean LibriSpeech references, including short clips and a 74-second recording containing distinct passages. Whisper turbo’s transcript text also matched native vLLM 0.32 exactly for the short/long, clean/noisy control recordings.
  • Error handling: Verified HTTP 400 for corrupt audio, unsupported output formats, and streaming requests; 404 for unknown models; and 413 for uploads exceeding the configured 8 MB limit. Valid requests still succeeded afterward.
  • Metrics: Successfully scraped the worker’s /metrics endpoint and verified nonzero vLLM successful-request counters, plus Dynamo request-duration and vLLM latency observations.

This review read head b55edfdd17. It differs from d6a823908f only by one # type: ignore comment, and the end-to-end runs used the CI vllm-runtime-test image of d6a823908f.

No P0 or P1 found. Three findings, each inline:

  • [P2] Uploads above about 25.17 MB get 400 Invalid request instead of 413. lib/llm/src/http/service/transcriptions.rs:321
  • [P2] vLLM request errors come back as 500, or as 400 without their reason. components/src/dynamo/vllm/transcription_handler.py:166
  • [P3] The workspace multipart feature of axum is not needed. Cargo.toml:162

Open items from other reviewers:

  • The two threads of rmccorm4 are still open. Both fixes hold at d6a823908f: an upload over the body limit gets 413, also with DYN_HTTP_BODY_LIMIT_MB=1, and the worker exports 72 vllm: and 11 dynamo_component_ metric families.
  • ptarasiewiczNV asked for an issue that tracks the move to the vLLM sidecar.
What this review ran.
  • Code: all 33 files (+2218/-11) and all 19 commits. The 4 merges of main add nothing that their parents do not hold. The two conflict resolutions keep both lines in service.rs and take the side of main in the examples lock.
  • Locks: only lib/runtime/examples/Cargo.lock changes. cargo tree --locked --offline passes in all four workspaces at the base, at this head and at a merge with main ba9caeac49. encoding_rs 0.8.42, core_detect 1.0.0 and multiversion_no_op 1.0.0 match the crates.io index, the lock and their upstream tags.
  • Rust, cargo test -p dynamo-llm --no-default-features, without network: at this head the lib tests give 3784 passed and 13 failed, http-service 37 passed, and http-transcriptions 5 passed. The base gives 3771 passed and the same 13 failures, all in the gpt_oss and harmony parser tests, so this change does not cause them. A deliberate break of the 413 branch in multipart_error makes oversized_upload_is_payload_too_large_and_malformed_is_bad_request fail, and the other 4 transcription unit tests still pass.
  • Python: the five changed test files, with the files of this head in the CI image: 571 passed, 2 failed. The base fails the same 2 tests there (test_endpoint_overrides_with_prefill_worker and test_disaggregation_mode_prefill, which need a routable host for the NIXL side channel). A deliberate break of the prefix caching default makes test_transcription_defaults_to_disabled fail.
  • End to end with openai/whisper-tiny, without network: json and verbose_json work, also through the OpenAI SDK. An alias, an omitted model and a launch without --served-model-name work. An unknown model gets 404. These get 400: response_format of text, srt or diarized_json, stream=true, and temperature out of range. timestamp_granularities with json and an empty or missing file also get 400. When the client disconnects, the worker cancels the request and vLLM aborts its 21 engine requests.
  • Merge with main at ba9caeac49: no conflict. The lib tests give 3801 passed and the same 13 failures, http-service 37 passed, and http-transcriptions 5 passed. The newer tip eb9ab163d7 also merges without a conflict and changes no file of this PR.
  • CI at this head: 120 check runs, 79 passed and 41 skipped, none failed or pending.

Review follow-up: the audio crosses the request plane base64-encoded, at
4/3 of its size, so an upload above about 25 MB passed the 45 MiB HTTP
body limit but exceeded the default 32 MiB TCP frame, and the client got
a generic 400 "Invalid request" instead of a 413. Cap the route's body
limit at 23 MiB, which leaves room for the envelope, as image_edits.rs
keeps its request below the same frame. A 413 names whichever limit was
hit: DYN_HTTP_BODY_LIMIT_MB when it is the lower one, otherwise the
transcription cap. A compile-time assertion keeps the encoded cap below
the frame.

Test: a 24 MiB upload, under the default body limit, gets 413 naming the
transcription limit.

Review follow-up: vLLM raises VLLMValidationError, for example for a
prompt longer than the model context, and it is not a ValueError, so the
client got a 500. vLLM's other request errors came back as 400 without
their reason. Re-raise ValueError and VLLMClientError (vLLM's 4xx base,
which includes VLLMValidationError) as InvalidArgument, the only error
that carries its message to the client, as handlers.py does.

Test: a VLLMValidationError and a ValueError from vLLM both reach the
client as InvalidArgument with their message.

Review follow-up: lib/llm already enables axum's multipart feature, and
dynamo-llm is the only crate that uses it. Enabling it on the workspace
only added five packages to lib/runtime/examples/Cargo.lock. Drop it and
restore main's copy of that lock.

@ptarasiewiczNV Thanks. Opened #17738 to track moving the transcription backend to the vLLM sidecar, and linked it from the description. Since your CI run, three more commits address @dmitry-tokarev-nv's review (upload cap below the request-plane frame, vLLM request errors as 400, dropped workspace multipart feature), and the branch now includes current main. Could you /ok to test ea592175d26247eb86a4d8d1a17ceccae3e29316 when you get a chance?

@rmccorm4 Thanks for the approval and auto-merge. The two failing checks are one runner problem: rust-tests (.) in run 41488234024 died with No space left on device during "Compile feature-gated benchmark entrypoints", after the tests it had reached were passing, and pre-merge-status-check only rolls that up. Pre Merge passes on main. Could you rerun the failed jobs? I do not have rights to rerun them.

Rebasing onto main brought in upstream's merged diffusion templates
(ai-dynamo#14660) and new example sources. Reflect them in the catalog:

- Describe the merged image, language-model, and Qwen3-TTS templates as
validated on Dynamo 1.5.1, drop the obsolete SGLang
shareProcessNamespace note, and explain the vLLM-Omni canary health
check workaround. The main Qwen3-TTS template is no longer
experimental; the experimental/ manifests keep their pinned builds.
- Add the SGLang Intel XPU DGDs (ai-dynamo#10023) to the aggregated, KV-routing,
and disaggregated pages, the SGLang LoRA router launcher (ai-dynamo#15746) to
LoRA Serving, and the vLLM transcription launcher (ai-dynamo#16208) to Audio and
  Realtime Serving.
- Note that the KVCR memory-service DGD now mounts a content-addressed
startup ConfigMap that deploy.sh applies first.
