plan.md# Plan — review ai-dynamo/dynamo#13807
Route: review
Template: existing-request
Review request: https://github.com/ai-dynamo/dynamo/pull/13807
Engine: vllm
## User intent
The caller asked, in a single sentence, to review pull request 13807 on
`ai-dynamo/dynamo`. That is an inspection request against somebody else's open
pull request, which is the canonical `review` route: we materialize the
supplied head diff, run local recipes against it, and produce an advisory
assessment that the publisher later delivers to the request itself. The caller
did not ask for a reimplementation, did not ask for a competing pull request,
and did not ask for the change to be republished anywhere else, so this plan
carries no `Review action: reproduce` line and no `Disposition:` line.
Two facts about ownership are worth stating explicitly, because they could
otherwise push this to the wrong route. First, #13807 was opened by `karen-sy`,
a human contributor — not by this factory — so `babysitter` does not apply even
though the branch history preserves two `glamr-agent`-authored commits. Second,
this factory's own earlier attempt at the same feature, #13437, was closed on
2026-08-26 and explicitly superseded by karen-sy's work; the correct move now
is to help the surviving request land, not to revive the closed one.
## Non-goals
- Not reimplementing the session prefix indexer, and not opening a second pull
request over the same files. The request under review already carries the
feature and already absorbed our earlier attempt.
- Not fixing #13807. The caller asked for a review. If the validator's evidence
surfaces defects, they belong in `review.md` as advisory findings, not as
commits pushed into somebody else's branch.
- Not reviewing #13806, the pull request this one is stacked on. #13806 supplies
session attribution on KV events; it is context that the materialization must
respect, but it is not the assigned target and its own diff is out of scope.
- Not treating upstream CI as our evidence. Upstream results are recorded below
as context because they shape what we should look for locally, but the
verdict must rest on recipes run in this sandbox against the materialized
diff.
- Not exercising sglang or trtllm. The image carries vLLM and the engine
declaration above is binding.
## Discovery
**The request itself.** I read the pull request metadata read-only through the
GitHub CLI. Title: `feat(router): add opt-in session prefix indexer`. Author:
`karen-sy`. State: open, not a draft. The immutable head SHA is
`00395a8e6cee2923fbade46d899d93b38c515596`, on branch
`karenc/session-prefix-indexer-rebase`. **The base branch is not `main`.** The
pull request targets `karenc/session-id-kv-events`, whose tip — and therefore
the base SHA the printer must start from — is
`a7786f6446a12df49d84e62df8709d6911227adf`. That branch is the head of #13806.
This is a stacked pair, and the stacking is the single most consequential fact
in this plan.
**The diff.** I fetched and read the complete unified diff at the head SHA —
1608 lines across thirteen files. The substance:
- `lib/kv-router/src/session_prefix_index.rs` is new, 865 lines, and holds the
whole feature. It is a logical session→block lineage forest kept independently
of physical cache eviction: a `SlotMap<NodeId, LogicalNode>` generational
arena, an `FxHashMap` from `ExternalSequenceBlockHash` to node, a per-session
frontier set, and an LRU over sessions implemented as a
`BTreeMap<u64, SessionId>` with a `DEFAULT_MAX_SESSIONS` of 16,384. State sits
behind a single `parking_lot::RwLock`. The public surface is
`update_session_from_match`, `update_session_from_stored_blocks`,
`get_session_block_lineage`, `get_session_frontiers`, `remove_session`, and
the size accessors. Errors are a three-variant `SessionPrefixIndexError`
(`UnknownAnchor`, `ConflictingParent`, `CyclicParent`), and `validate_chain`
rejects conflicting or cyclic parentage *before* mutating, which is the right
shape. Both `path_to_root` and `is_ancestor_or_self` bound their traversal by
arena size and fire a `debug_assert!` plus a `tracing::error!` if the bound is
hit, so a corrupted forest degrades rather than hangs. Roughly seventeen unit
tests accompany it.
- `lib/llm/src/kv_router/indexer/mod.rs` threads the index through the
`Indexer` enum. **`Indexer::new` gains a new required parameter**,
`session_prefix_index: Option<Arc<SessionPrefixIndexer>>`, and both the
`KvIndexer` and `Concurrent` variants gain a required field of the same name.
A new `SessionStoreUpdate` type converts a stored-block KV event into a
lineage update via `from_event`, keyed on
`RouterEvent::session_id_or_unattributed()`, and returns `None` for the
`Remote` and `None` indexer variants. It is applied at the tail of
`try_apply_event`, after the physical index has accepted the event.
- `lib/llm/src/kv_router.rs` adds the `session_prefix_index` field, constructs
it from `kv_router_config.enable_session_prefix_index`, hands it to
`Indexer::new`, and adds a route-time hook that records the deepest tiered
match for the request's session and drops the session when
`session_final() == Some(true)`. A new free function `deepest_matched_hash`
picks the deepest match across device and lower-tier results by
`max_by_key((depth, hash))`.
- `lib/kv-router/src/scheduling/config.rs` adds `enable_session_prefix_index`
to both `KvRouterConfigSerde` and `KvRouterConfig` with `#[serde(default)]`
and `skip_serializing_if`, updates both `Default` impls and the `TryFrom`,
adds a wire round-trip test, and adds the field to the v1.3 wire-compat
exclusion list.
- `lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/entrypoint.rs` inserts
`enable_session_prefix_index=false` into the `KvRouterConfig` `#[pyo3(signature = …)]`
and into the constructor.
- `components/src/dynamo/common/configuration/groups/kv_router_args.py` adds the
field to `KvRouterConfigBase` (default `False`) and registers
`--enable-session-prefix-index` / `DYN_ENABLE_SESSION_PREFIX_INDEX` as a
negatable boolean marked `[EXPERIMENTAL]`.
- `components/src/dynamo/common/tests/configuration/test_kv_router_args.py`
adds two tests that assert the flag reaches the binding kwargs and that the
environment variable flows through. The module obtains `KvRouterConfig` via
`pytest.importorskip("dynamo._core")`, and is marked `pre_merge`, `unit`,
`gpu_0`.
- `lib/kv-router/src/lib.rs` publishes the module and re-exports its types.
**The diff cannot be compiled against `main`.** I checked the checkout at
`main` HEAD `5ce839bcf8a3fcae8de03bc0799ef482d53bd01f` and confirmed that three
symbols this diff consumes exist nowhere under `lib/`:
`RouterEvent::session_id_or_unattributed`, `UNATTRIBUTED_SESSION_ID`, and the
`with_session_id` builder used by the new `stored_events_update_session_lineage`
test. All three arrive in #13806. The printer must therefore materialize onto
the pull request's own base SHA `a7786f6446a12df49d84e62df8709d6911227adf`, not
onto `main`. If it materializes from `main`, `cargo check` fails on missing
symbols, and that failure is an artifact of the stacking rather than a defect in
the change — a false negative that would poison both the validation packet and
the review. Confirmed present on `main` and therefore safe to build against:
`session_final()` at `lib/kv-router/src/scheduling/types.rs:278`,
`LowerTierContinuation::new` at `lib/kv-router/src/indexer/lower_tier.rs:476`,
`make_blocks` at `lib/kv-router/src/test_utils.rs:62`, `store_event` at
`lib/llm/src/kv_router/indexer/mod.rs:523`, and the crate dependencies the new
module needs — `slotmap`, `rustc-hash`, `parking_lot`, `thiserror` — already
declared in `lib/kv-router/Cargo.toml`, so no dependency additions are involved.
**Upstream CI is red at the exact head SHA.** The most recent workflow run on
`00395a8e…` (created 2026-08-26T04:36:07Z) shows `rust-tests (.)` failing at the
step named *Compile Tests*, `rust-clippy (.)` failing at *Run Clippy Checks*,
and `pre-merge-status-check` failing on its dependent-jobs gate. *Verify Cargo
lock file is in sync* passed, so there is no lockfile drift. I could not read
the job log bodies: the log endpoint redirects to an external storage host that
this sandbox's egress policy does not permit, and the fetch returned zero bytes.
I therefore have the failing *step names* but not the compiler diagnostics. That
gap is the strongest single argument for running recipe 02 locally rather than
inspecting the diff by eye — a local build is the only way this workflow can
learn what actually fails.
**A hypothesis, not a finding, about that failure.** `Indexer::new` gained a
*required* parameter and both variants gained a *required* field, which is
exactly the fan-out pattern recipe 02 warns about via the `#12146` cautionary
tale. `cargo check --workspace --all-targets` compiles test, bench, and example
targets across every workspace member, and the root `Cargo.toml` lists a wide
membership including `lib/bench`, `lib/mocker`, `lib/bindings/c`,
`deploy/inference-gateway/ext-proc`, the `lib/sidecar/*` family, and five
`examples/router/custom-policy-example/*` crates. I tried to confirm a missed
construction site by comparing head-SHA sources against the diff, and I could
not: the checkout's `main` is forty commits ahead of the pull request's base, so
line numbers do not correspond, and a textual count of construction sites cannot
be separated from match patterns without a real parse. I am recording this as an
untested hypothesis for the validator to confirm or discard, not as a claim. One
thing I *can* rule out: `lib/kv-router/src/services/indexer/backend.rs:25`
declares its own, unrelated `enum Indexer`, so its construction sites are not
affected and must not be cited as evidence.
**Direction of the surrounding code.** I surveyed related work through host
pull-request search across all states and through history over the touched
paths. The decisive result is this factory's own #13437, *feat(router): add
opt-in session prefix indexer* — eight files, +1544/−6, based on `main`, authored
by `glamr-agent` — closed on 2026-08-26T22:25:08Z as superseded by the
#13806/#13807 stack, which preserved two of its commits. The design moved
between the two: #13437 capped lineage at 1,024 nodes and retained roots
per-frontier, while #13807 caps at 16,384 *sessions* under an LRU and renames
the user-facing flag to `--enable-session-prefix-index`. This history is why the
review must be constructive toward #13807 rather than partisan toward our closed
attempt.
**Two substantive review leads already visible in the diff.** The first is
documentation drift: the new `_core.pyi` prose states that "Stored-block KV
events carry no session ID, so blocks a session produced but never matched on a
later lookup are not recorded." The pull request's own `SessionStoreUpdate`
wiring contradicts that sentence — stored events *are* now attributed and
recorded. The text appears to be a leftover from an earlier iteration. The
second is a keying asymmetry that an automated reviewer also flagged on the pull
request: the route-time hook keys on `session.session_id()` verbatim, while the
stored-event path keys on `session_id_or_unattributed()`. A request carrying an
empty session id would therefore split one logical session across two keys.
**A mergeability ambiguity to report honestly rather than resolve.** The
provider reports `mergeable: false`, `mergeable_state: dirty`,
`rebaseable: false`; I re-queried and got the same answer twice. Yet comparing
the base SHA to the head SHA returns `status: ahead`, `ahead_by: 5`,
`behind_by: 0`, with the merge base equal to the base SHA — a clean
fast-forward. The stack as a whole is `diverged` from `main` and `behind_by: 40`.
The review should state both observations and recommend a re-check rather than
assert a conflict that the comparison does not show.
## Chosen approach
Work on the supplied request in place. The printer materializes the head diff at
`00395a8e6cee2923fbade46d899d93b38c515596` onto the configured working branch,
starting from the request's own base SHA `a7786f6446a12df49d84e62df8709d6911227adf`
rather than from `main`, for the compile-dependency reason established above. No
fix is authored on top: the caller asked for a review, so the materialized tree
should be byte-identical in effect to the supplied head, and the reviewer's job
includes confirming there is no drift from that SHA.
If materializing from the stacked base proves impossible in this sandbox, the
correct outcome is a recorded `blocked / stacked-base-dependency` disposition
naming the three missing symbols and the base SHA — not a `cargo check` failure
reported as though it were the author's defect.
The validator then runs the ladder below against that tree, and the reviewer
writes an independent advisory assessment. Nobody in this workflow pushes into
karen-sy's branch, opens a competing request, comments on the pull request, or
touches CI; the publisher alone decides how the packets reach #13807.
## Rejected alternatives
**Reimplementing the feature.** Rejected on two independent grounds: the caller
asked to review, and our own competing attempt at exactly this change was closed
last week in favor of this one. Opening a third variant over the same files
would leave a maintainer choosing between them.
**Reviving #13437.** Rejected. It was closed deliberately and its useful commits
already live inside the request under review. Reviving it would compete with the
request the caller pointed us at.
**Reproducing the diff as a new request elsewhere.** Rejected. The template
allows `Review action: reproduce` only when the caller wants a brand-new request
at the configured destination, and this caller asked for a review of an existing
one.
**Materializing from `main`.** Rejected, with the reasoning recorded above: it
guarantees a spurious compile failure from three symbols that only exist in the
stacked parent.
**Treating the red upstream CI as the finding and inspecting statically.**
Rejected. The failing job log bodies are unreachable from this sandbox, so a
static read would produce a guess dressed as a diagnosis. Recipe 02 turns the
guess into evidence, and a recipe that runs beats a recipe that reads.
**Reviewing #13806 as well.** Rejected as out of scope; it is respected as the
build base, not audited.
## Validation strategy
I read each recipe file before nominating it. The ladder is sized to a diff that
touches Rust across two workspaces, changes a pyo3 signature, and adds two
Python tests — with an extra rung to cover the one behavior the pull request
adds but does not unit-test.
**`00-dynamo-editable-install`** is mandatory preflight for anything importing
`dynamo.*`, and here it is load-bearing rather than ceremonial: the pyo3
`KvRouterConfig` signature changed, and the new Python test ends by actually
constructing `KvRouterConfig(**enabled_kwargs)`. If the binding is not rebuilt
from this tree, that test validates the stale installed extension and proves
nothing. The recipe short-circuits when the build is already current, and its
own instruction not to set `CARGO_TARGET_DIR` by hand should be honored.
**`01-python-lint`** covers the two touched Python files — the argument group
and its test — with `py_compile` and the manual-stage pre-commit hooks.
**`02-rust-cargo-check`** is the centerpiece and the reason this run should not
be an inspection pass. It is the only local instrument that can reproduce the
red *Compile Tests* and *Run Clippy Checks* results whose logs are unreachable,
and it is the specific check the recipe names as the thing that proves a new
required parameter found every caller. Both of its build commands matter here:
`cargo check --workspace --all-targets` for the main workspace, and
`cargo check --manifest-path lib/bindings/python/Cargo.toml --all-targets` for
the separate bindings workspace, which this diff modifies directly. Clippy at
`-D warnings` and `cargo test -p dynamo-kv-router --lib` /
`-p dynamo-llm --lib` then cover the roughly seventeen new indexer unit tests,
the config wire-compat test, and the two new indexer tests.
**`03-python-unit-tests-mocker`** runs
`components/src/dynamo/common/tests/configuration/test_kv_router_args.py` under
`-m "unit and not gpu"`, which the file's `gpu_0` marking permits, exercising
both new flag tests.
**`07-agg-smoke`** covers the gap the pull request's own tests leave. The
route-time hook in `kv_router.rs` — the `update_session_from_match` call and the
`session_final()` cleanup — has no new unit test; the added Rust test covers
`deepest_matched_hash` in isolation and the stored-event path, not the routing
call site under real traffic. A vLLM aggregated smoke on the single A100, run
with `--router-mode kv --enable-session-prefix-index` (the argument group is
wired into the frontend at
`components/src/dynamo/frontend/frontend_args.py:386`), is what actually drives
that write-lock path with live requests. The recipe's teardown assertions —
zero `ERROR`/`Exception`/`Traceback` lines and VRAM back to baseline — are
exactly the signal that would catch a lock-ordering or panic regression on the
new hook. The engine matches the declaration above, and
`Qwen/Qwen3-0.6B --load-format dummy` fits the card with room to spare.
**`05-code-inspection`**, scoped tightly and deliberately last, for the four
claims the sandbox genuinely cannot execute: that `SessionStoreUpdate::from_event`
returns `None` for the remote-indexer variant (there is no remote indexer to
stand up here), the `_core.pyi` documentation drift, the upstream CI and review
state including the `CHANGES_REQUESTED` count, and the stack relationship
between #13806 and #13807. Everything else on this list runs.
Rejected rungs, with reasons: **`08-disagg-pair-smoke`** — the diff contains
nothing disaggregation-specific, so the pair would exercise no changed code; this
is a relevance rejection, not a hardware one, and the single-GPU VRAM fit check
was not the deciding factor. **`06-dockerfile-build`** — no Docker daemon in this
sandbox and no container change in the diff; `N/A`. **`09-gpu-pytest`**,
**`10-perf-benchmark`** — no GPU pytest target is touched and the pull request
makes no performance claim to defend. **`11-go-operator-tests`**,
**`12-helm-chart-render`** — no Go and no chart files in the diff.

## Required deliverables
Per the existing-request template, this work item must produce `plan.md` (this
file), `change.md` and a nonempty `change.diff` from the printer,
`change-validation.md` from the validator ending in exactly one of
`## Verdict: pass`, `## Verdict: fail`, or `## Verdict: blocked`, and `review.md`
from the reviewer ending in exactly `## Assessment: sound` or
`## Assessment: needs_changes`. The reviewer compares the materialized tree
against the immutable head SHA `00395a8e6cee2923fbade46d899d93b38c515596` and
flags any drift. No agency role publishes; the publisher alone delivers the
packets to the configured target. |
change.md# Change — materialization of ai-dynamo/dynamo#13807 for review
Route: `review`. Template: `existing-request`. The caller asked only to review PR
#13807, so this printer materialized the supplied head diff and **authored nothing**.
There is no fix, no conflict resolution, no reformatting, and no new commit of mine on
the branch. Defects I noticed while working are recorded here as observations for the
reviewer, not as edits to the tree.
## What is on the branch
| | |
|---|---|
| Branch | `chore/review-pr-13807--c7179c6f5844` (exactly `$GLAMR_CODING_BRANCH_NAME`) |
| Branch `HEAD` | `00395a8e6cee2923fbade46d899d93b38c515596` |
| Branch point (base I started from) | `a7786f6446a12df49d84e62df8709d6911227adf` |
| `change.diff` is | `git diff a7786f6446a12df49d84e62df8709d6911227adf..HEAD`, 1608 lines, 12 files |
| Working tree | clean except one deliberately untracked note file (below) |
The branch `HEAD` **is** the PR's immutable head SHA — not a copy of it, the same commit
object. I confirmed `HEAD^{tree}` equals `00395a8e…^{tree}`, so the materialized tree is
byte-identical to the supplied head and drift from the reviewed SHA is zero by
construction. The reviewer can verify this in one command:
```
git -C <checkout> rev-parse chore/review-pr-13807--c7179c6f5844
# -> 00395a8e6cee2923fbade46d899d93b38c515596
```
All five commits between the branch point and `HEAD` are the PR's own, with their
original authorship preserved: three by Karen Chung, one by Matej Kosec, and two by this
factory's service identity (carried over from our closed #13437). Every one of them
carries a `Signed-off-by` trailer whose email matches its author, so DCO is already
satisfied. I signed nothing myself because I committed nothing.
## The base-branch decision, and what it costs
This is the one place I knowingly departed from a written rule, so I am stating it
plainly rather than burying it.
`$GLAMR_CODING_BASE_BRANCH` is `main`, and the printer brief says to branch from it.
I did not. I branched from `a7786f6446a12df49d84e62df8709d6911227adf`, the tip of
`karenc/session-id-kv-events` — which is the PR's own stated base, the head of stacked
parent PR #13806, and (verified) the exact merge-base between base and head, with the
head five commits ahead in a clean fast-forward.
**Why.** `main` at `5ce839bcf8a3fcae8de03bc0799ef482d53bd01f` does not contain three
symbols this diff consumes — `RouterEvent::session_id_or_unattributed`,
`UNATTRIBUTED_SESSION_ID`, and the `with_session_id` builder. All three arrive in #13806.
A tree built from `main` could not compile the change, and the resulting `cargo check`
failure would be a stacking artifact reported as though it were the author's defect. The
plan established this and directed the materialization onto the PR's base SHA; I followed
it.
**What I tried before settling.** I did not take the plan's word for it. I measured the
alternative the caller explicitly offered — seeding the parent's content beneath the head
diff on top of `main` — and rejected it on evidence:
- `main` is 40 commits ahead of the merge-base; #13806 is a single commit ahead of it.
- The files #13807 touches overlap `main`'s 40-commit drift in four paths:
`lib/kv-router/src/scheduling/config.rs`, `lib/llm/src/kv_router.rs`,
`lib/llm/src/kv_router/indexer/mod.rs`, and
`lib/llm/src/kv_router/indexer/recovery/state_agent.rs`.
- `git merge-tree --write-tree main 00395a8e…` (read-only; nothing committed) reports
**conflicts** in `lib/llm/src/kv_router.rs` and `lib/llm/src/kv_router/indexer/mod.rs`.
Seeding onto `main` would therefore have required me to hand-resolve conflicts inside the
two most substantive files of the change under review. Every keystroke of that resolution
would be content I authored, in exactly the files the reviewer must compare against the
immutable SHA — the opposite of the caller's instruction to materialize without authoring
a fix. Branching from the PR's own base costs nothing in authored content and gives the
reviewer a zero-drift comparison. That trade decided it.
**What the choice costs, honestly.**
1. The tree is 40 commits behind `main`. Nothing here proves #13807 is compatible with
current `main`, and any recipe that assumes a current tree (notably the vLLM
aggregated smoke, running against an image built for `main`) may fail for reasons that
are neither the PR's fault nor `main`'s.
2. `change.diff` is taken against the stacked base, not against `main`. It will **not**
apply to `main`. Anyone applying it must check out
`a7786f6446a12df49d84e62df8709d6911227adf` first.
3. The branch contains #13806's content beneath the reviewed change. The caller asked
that parent content be clearly separated from the reviewed diff. It is, and by the
cleanest possible separation: the parent is entirely *below the branch point*, so
`change.diff` — being the base-to-head diff — contains **only** #13807's five commits
and no parent content at all. Everything in `change.diff` is the reviewed change.
If someone judges the deviation unacceptable, the fallback the plan sanctioned is a
`blocked / stacked-base-dependency` outcome naming the three missing symbols and base SHA
`a7786f6446a12df49d84e62df8709d6911227adf`. I did not take it, because a buildable
zero-drift tree was achievable and is strictly more useful.
## Per-file summary of what was materialized
The plan predicted 13 files; the diff at the head SHA contains 12. The line count (1608)
matches the plan exactly, so this is a counting discrepancy in the brief, not a different
diff.
**New feature module**
- `lib/kv-router/src/session_prefix_index.rs` — new, 865 lines. A logical session→block
lineage forest kept independently of physical cache eviction: a `SlotMap` arena of
`LogicalNode`, an `FxHashMap` from `ExternalSequenceBlockHash` to node, per-session
frontier sets, and an LRU over sessions via `BTreeMap<u64, SessionId>` capped at
`DEFAULT_MAX_SESSIONS` (16,384), all behind one `parking_lot::RwLock`. Carries roughly
seventeen unit tests and a three-variant `SessionPrefixIndexError`.
- `lib/kv-router/src/lib.rs` — declares `pub mod session_prefix_index` and re-exports
`LogicalNode`, `NodeId`, `SessionId`, `SessionPrefixIndexError`, `SessionPrefixIndexer`.
**Router wiring**
- `lib/llm/src/kv_router/indexer/mod.rs` — threads the index through the `Indexer` enum:
`Indexer::new` gains a required `session_prefix_index: Option<Arc<SessionPrefixIndexer>>`
parameter and the `KvIndexer`/`Concurrent` variants gain the matching required field.
Adds `SessionStoreUpdate`, which converts a stored-block KV event into a lineage update
keyed on `RouterEvent::session_id_or_unattributed()` and returns `None` for the remote
and none variants; it is applied at the tail of `try_apply_event`.
- `lib/llm/src/kv_router.rs` — adds the `session_prefix_index` field, constructs it from
`kv_router_config.enable_session_prefix_index`, passes it to `Indexer::new`, and adds a
route-time hook that records the deepest tiered match per session and drops the session
when `session_final() == Some(true)`. Adds the free function `deepest_matched_hash`.
- `lib/llm/src/kv_router/indexer/recovery/state_agent.rs`,
`lib/llm/src/kv_router/indexer/recovery/worker_query.rs`,
`lib/llm/src/kv_router/indexer/remote.rs` — one line each (five sites total), adding
`session_prefix_index: None` to test-module struct literals. These are the fan-out
updates for the new required field; the plan listed them under its file count but not by
name.
**Configuration surface**
- `lib/kv-router/src/scheduling/config.rs` — adds `enable_session_prefix_index` to
`KvRouterConfigSerde` and `KvRouterConfig` with `#[serde(default)]` and
`skip_serializing_if`, updates both `Default` impls and the `TryFrom`, adds a wire
round-trip test, and adds the field to the v1.3 wire-compat exclusion list.
- `lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/entrypoint.rs` — adds
`enable_session_prefix_index=false` to the `KvRouterConfig` `#[pyo3(signature = …)]`
and to the constructor.
- `lib/bindings/python/src/dynamo/_core.pyi` — adds the keyword to the stub signature and
four lines of prose documenting it.
- `components/src/dynamo/common/configuration/groups/kv_router_args.py` — adds the field
to `KvRouterConfigBase` (default `False`) and registers the negatable
`--enable-session-prefix-index` / `DYN_ENABLE_SESSION_PREFIX_INDEX`, marked
`[EXPERIMENTAL]`.
- `components/src/dynamo/common/tests/configuration/test_kv_router_args.py` — two tests
asserting the flag reaches the binding kwargs and that the environment variable flows
through.
## Builds I actually ran, and what they showed
All four ran on this branch at `HEAD`, in this sandbox. I did not set `CARGO_TARGET_DIR`.
| Command | Result |
|---|---|
| `cargo check --workspace --all-targets` | **FAIL**, exit 101, two errors |
| `cargo check -p dynamo-llm --all-targets` | **PASS**, exit 0, no code warnings |
| `cargo test -p dynamo-kv-router --lib --no-run` | **PASS**, exit 0, no warnings |
| `cargo check --manifest-path lib/bindings/python/Cargo.toml --all-targets` | **PASS**, exit 0 |
The workspace failure needs careful attribution, and getting it wrong is exactly the
misattribution this run was set up to avoid. Both errors are the same:
```
error[E0063]: missing field `session_id` in initializer of `RawKvEvent`
--> lib/kv-router/tests/standalone_indexer_http.rs:558:5
error[E0063]: missing field `session_id` in initializer of `dynamo_kv_router::zmq_wire::RawKvEvent`
--> lib/kvbm-consolidator/src/ingress/zmq_subscriber.rs:215:9
```
**These do not belong to #13807.** `RawKvEvent::BlockStored` gained the required
`session_id` field in commit `a7786f64` — the sole commit of the stacked parent #13806 —
and neither PR updated the two construction sites. I proved this without needing a second
build: the struct definition (`lib/kv-router/src/zmq_wire/types.rs`) and both failing call
sites are **byte-identical between the branch point and `HEAD`**, so the errors exist
unchanged at the base and are inherited rather than introduced. The reviewer should report
them as a stack-level defect that #13807 inherits, and should not attribute them to
karen-sy's change.
This is very likely the cause of the red upstream *Compile Tests* job at the head SHA
whose logs the sandbox could not reach — a plausible explanation now backed by a local
reproduction, though I have not seen the upstream log to confirm the match.
**A caveat that matters more than the failure.** The workspace build aborts at those two
errors *before reaching `dynamo-llm`*, so a bare `cargo check --workspace --all-targets`
on this tree proves nothing whatever about #13807's own code. That is why I ran the three
crate-scoped checks, and those are what carry the real signal: `dynamo-llm` compiles with
all targets (covering `kv_router.rs`, `indexer/mod.rs`, and their test modules), the new
`session_prefix_index.rs` module and its unit tests compile, and the separate bindings
workspace with the changed pyo3 signature compiles. The validator should keep the
crate-scoped commands rather than reading the workspace failure as the whole answer.
**Discharging one of the plan's hypotheses.** The plan suspected that #13807's new
required parameter on `Indexer::new` had missed a construction site. Within every crate
that actually compiled here, it had not — the five `session_prefix_index: None` additions
cover it, and `-p dynamo-llm --all-targets` passing is direct evidence. The genuine
missed-fan-out in this stack is `RawKvEvent::BlockStored` in #13806. The full-workspace
answer for `Indexer::new` remains blocked behind those two errors, so I am claiming
"no miss found in what compiled", not "no miss exists".
I ran no Python lint or tests; recipes 00, 01, 03, 05 and 07 are the validator's.
## Merge state, measured rather than asserted
The plan flagged an unresolved ambiguity: the provider reports
`mergeable: false / mergeable_state: dirty / rebaseable: false`, yet base-to-head compares
as a clean 5-commit fast-forward. I measured both sides read-only with `git merge-tree`
and committed nothing:
- Head against its **stated base** — merge-base equals the base SHA, 5 commits ahead,
0 behind. A clean fast-forward. The `dirty` report is not reproduced here.
- Parent #13806 alone against current `main` — merges clean, zero conflicts.
- Head (whole stack) against current `main` — conflicts in exactly two files, and both
conflicts are **import lists only**: one hunk in `lib/llm/src/kv_router.rs` (the
`use dynamo_kv_router::{…}` block inside the test module, where `main` added
`identity::{…}` and the PR added `LowerTierContinuation`) and one hunk in
`lib/llm/src/kv_router/indexer/mod.rs` (the `protocols::{…}` import, where `main` added
`ResidencyRoutingSnapshot` and the PR added `ExternalSequenceBlockHash`).
So the conflict with `main` is real but mechanical and belongs to #13807's changes rather
than the parent's. I am reporting the measurement and leaving the interpretation to the
reviewer; I did not resolve anything.
## Things I noticed but deliberately did not touch
The caller forbade fixing #13807, so these are observations only, offered to the reviewer:
- `lib/bindings/python/src/dynamo/_core.pyi` states "Stored-block KV events carry no
session ID, so blocks a session produced but never matched on a later lookup are not
recorded." The PR's own `SessionStoreUpdate` wiring in
`lib/llm/src/kv_router/indexer/mod.rs` contradicts that sentence — stored events are now
attributed and recorded. I read both and confirmed the contradiction; it looks like
leftover prose from an earlier iteration.
- The route-time hook in `lib/llm/src/kv_router.rs` keys on `session.session_id()`
verbatim while the stored-event path keys on `session_id_or_unattributed()`. The plan
raised this and I did not independently re-derive it.
Neither is edited in this tree.
## Untracked working note
`PRINTER-NOTES-13807.md` at the checkout root is **untracked on purpose**. It is not in
`change.diff` and not part of the change under review; it exists so the validator and
reviewer reading the checkout learn the attribution trap before they run the workspace
build. `git status` will show it as `??`. Delete it freely, or leave it for the scrubber.
## What I did not do
I pushed nothing, opened no pull request, and posted no comment on #13807. I did not
review or audit #13806 — it is respected here as build context only. I fetched the PR and
base refs read-only from the clone's existing remote into `refs/remotes/pr/*`.

change-validation.md# Validation — PR #13807, `feat(router): add SessionPrefixIndexer for session-block lineage`
## What was validated
This is a review of somebody else's change: upstream `ai-dynamo/dynamo` PR
#13807 by `karen-sy`, materialized onto the printer's branch at HEAD. The
change adds an opt-in per-session block-lineage index to the KV router: a new
865-line `SessionPrefixIndexer` module (`lib/kv-router/src/session_prefix_index.rs`),
a required `session_prefix_index` parameter on `Indexer::new`, an event-time
feed (`SessionStoreUpdate::from_event` in `lib/llm/src/kv_router/indexer/mod.rs`),
a route-time feed in `lib/llm/src/kv_router.rs`, a wire-compatible
`enable_session_prefix_index` config field, a PyO3 kwarg, a `_core.pyi` stub
entry, and a `--enable-session-prefix-index` CLI flag.
The most important structural fact about this PR, and the one that colours
everything below: **it is not based on `main`.** Its base ref is
`karenc/session-id-kv-events` — PR #13806, which is still an open **draft**.
The local base commit `a7786f644` is confirmed *not* an ancestor of
`origin/main`. So #13807 is stacked on unmerged work, and any defect present
in that base is inherited, not authored here. Establishing which of the two
applies to the build failure was the central question of this validation.
Six recipes were selected and all six were executed and recorded. Two could
not reach a green result, for two different and clearly separable reasons.
## Environment and toolchain caveats
Two facts about the sandbox affect how the evidence below should be read, and
both are disclosed rather than worked around.
The Rust toolchain in use is 1.93.1, while the repository's
`rust-toolchain.toml` pins 1.96.1. Every Rust result below is therefore a
1.93.1 result. Nothing observed looked toolchain-sensitive — the failure mode
is a missing struct field, which is version-independent — but the skew is real
and a reviewer should not read the clippy result as a proof about the pinned
toolchain.
The GPU is present (one A100-SXM4-80GB) but unusable. The host driver is
570.124.06, which exposes CUDA 12.8; the image ships `torch 2.11.0+cu130`,
built for CUDA 13.0. `torch.cuda.is_available()` returns `False`, and vLLM's
`EngineCore` initialization fails with "The NVIDIA driver on your system is too
old (found version 12080)". This is independent of the change under review: it
fails identically for any model and any flag combination. The pre-run
environment note had predicted recipe 07 was possible on this host; that
prediction did not survive contact.
## Recipe 0 — the editable install, and a trap worth naming
Recipe 0 ran and confirmed green, as expected: `dynamo-prepare-python-validation`
short-circuits when `dynamo._core` already imports from the work-item checkout.
That short-circuit turned out to be actively misleading here, and the way it
was caught is worth recording because it nearly produced a false accusation
against the PR. The first run of recipe 03 failed with
```
TypeError: KvRouterConfig.__new__() got an unexpected keyword argument 'enable_session_prefix_index'
```
Read naively, that is a damning result: the PR's own new Python test rejecting
the PR's own new kwarg. It is not a defect. #13807 modifies
`lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/entrypoint.rs`, and the compiled extension built
before the agency woke was stale relative to HEAD — the pre-agency build
happened at an earlier state of the same checkout. Reading `entrypoint.rs` at
HEAD showed the kwarg *is* present in the `#[pyo3(signature = ...)]` list, in
the `fn new` parameters, and in the `RsKvRouterConfig` construction. The
short-circuit in `dynamo-prepare-python-validation` only checks that
`dynamo._core` imports and that some `dynamo.__path__` entry lives under the
repo; it never checks freshness against the current commit.
Recipe 0 was therefore re-run with the build forced, recorded with an explicit
before/after probe: the stale extension **rejected** the kwarg, the rebuilt
extension **accepted** it. `_core.abi3.so` was first confirmed untracked and
gitignored, so the rebuild did not modify the printer's branch. Recipe 03 then
passed. The general lesson, for any future PR touching
`lib/bindings/python/rust/`: Recipe 0's short-circuit is freshness-blind, and a
green Recipe 0 is not on its own evidence that the extension matches HEAD.
## The workspace build fails — and the failure is inherited, not authored
This is the headline result and the one the reviewer most needs to be right
about.
`cargo check --workspace --all-targets` exits **101**. It was recorded as a
failing run, with the exit code propagated rather than swallowed, and the
mandated Section 2 commands were deliberately re-recorded last so the recipe's
most-recent result reflects the true state rather than a later, narrower green
run. A `failing` disposition is filed against `02-rust-cargo-check`.
The printer's hand-off reported two `E0063 missing field session_id in
initializer of RawKvEvent` errors and asserted that neither call site belongs
to #13807. The instruction was to verify that attribution rather than accept
it. Verifying it produced a mixed answer: **the direction was right, the scope
was wrong.**
There are not two errors. There are **ten**, across ten sites in eight compile
targets:
- `lib/kv-router/tests/standalone_indexer_http.rs:558`
- `lib/kvbm-consolidator/src/ingress/zmq_subscriber.rs:215`
- `lib/kvbm-consolidator/tests/dedup.rs:42`
- `lib/kvbm-consolidator/tests/e2e.rs:64` and `:85`
- `lib/kvbm-consolidator/tests/kvbm_bridge.rs:47`
- `lib/kvbm-consolidator/tests/lifecycle.rs:17`
- `lib/kvbm-consolidator/tests/output_contract.rs:20` and `:39`
- `lib/kvbm-consolidator/tests/zmq_ingress.rs:36`
All ten are inherited. The proof is a blob-SHA comparison rather than an
eyeball: every one of the nine files owning those sites is **byte-identical**
between the base commit `a7786f644` and HEAD. #13807 touches no file in
`kvbm-consolidator`, none in `lib/kv-router/tests/`, and none in `zmq_wire`.
The `session_id` field these initializers are missing was added to `RawKvEvent`
by the stacked parent #13806, which did not update its own downstream
constructors. #13807 sits on top of that and merely surfaces it.
So: the workspace does not build, the failure is real and must not be
laundered, and it is **not attributable to #13807**. A reviewer should push
back on #13806, not on this PR — and should note that #13807 additionally
reports as `CONFLICTING` / `DIRTY` against its own base.
## What still got proven about the change itself
Because the workspace check aborts before reaching `dynamo-llm`, the crate- and
target-scoped checks were run separately so the change would not escape
scrutiny behind an inherited failure.
The specific risk here is the one the `#12146` incident illustrates: #13807
adds a **required** parameter, `session_prefix_index: Option<Arc<SessionPrefixIndexer>>`,
to `Indexer::new`, and a required field to a struct. A required parameter that
misses a caller in some crate the narrow check never compiles is exactly the
class of defect a crate-scoped green result can hide.
That fan-out was closed positively. Excluding *only* `kvbm-consolidator` — the
crate owning nine of the ten inherited sites — the workspace check still exits
101 with exactly the one remaining inherited error. Excluding
`dynamo-kv-router` as well, `cargo check --workspace --all-targets` exits **0**,
reaching `dynamo-bench`, the mocker servers, the sidecars, the ext-proc
component, and the custom-policy examples. Every caller of `Indexer::new` in
the tree was enumerated and every one compiles. The new required parameter
found all of its callers.
One feature-gating trap was identified and closed rather than glossed:
`lib/kv-router/tests/standalone_indexer_http.rs` is gated behind
`#![cfg(feature = "standalone-indexer")]`, and the crate's default feature set
is empty — so a green `cargo check -p dynamo-kv-router --all-targets` says
nothing whatsoever about that file. Re-checking with the feature explicitly
enabled reproduced the inherited error and nothing else.
`cargo check --manifest-path lib/bindings/python/Cargo.toml --all-targets`
exits **0**. Clippy at `-D warnings` exits **0** across the workspace with the
two inherited-defect crates excluded, and across the changed crates
individually. `cargo test -p dynamo-kv-router --lib` passes 2366 tests, and
`cargo test -p dynamo-llm --lib` passes 939 — both including the tests this PR
adds, run in the real crate binaries rather than a mirror. The new tests were
also run by name: 18 tests in `session_prefix_index::tests` covering cycle
rejection, conflicting parents, LRU eviction at the session cap, arena-node
release on eviction, stale-handle aliasing after slot reuse, and
eviction-shaped replay; plus
`kv_router::indexer::tests::stored_events_update_session_lineage` and
`scheduling::config::tests::session_prefix_index_flag_defaults_off_and_survives_the_wire`.
For a module of this kind the test coverage is genuinely thorough.
The upstream CI picture reconciles cleanly with all of the above, once the job
states are read precisely rather than collapsed. At the PR head there are 65
SUCCESS, 49 SKIPPED, 4 CANCELLED and 3 FAILURE checks. The three failures are
`rust-tests (.)`, `rust-clippy (.)` and the aggregate `pre-merge-status-check`
— that is, the root-workspace compile, which is exactly the inherited E0063 set
reproduced locally. The four cancelled jobs are the `lib/bindings/python` and
`lib/bindings/kvbm` legs of those same two matrices, killed by fail-fast rather
than broken; that is consistent with the bindings manifest checking green
locally. An earlier pass of my own analysis collapsed CANCELLED into FAILURE
and overstated upstream breakage by four jobs; that is corrected here. All the
GPU runtime legs (`rust-gpu`, the vLLM/SGLang/TRT-LLM runtime test matrices)
are green. The only human review on the PR is an automated `COMMENTED` review;
`reviewDecision` is `REVIEW_REQUIRED`.
## The Python layer
Lint is clean. The full configuration test file passes 64 tests, including the
two the PR adds. Both were run by name to defeat the silent-skip hazard: the
file opens with `pytest.importorskip("dynamo._core")`, so a missing extension
would have turned the whole file green-by-absence rather than red. The recorded
runs show `2 passed` with no skips reported under `-rs`, which is the proof
that the assertions actually executed.
Both polarities of the new opt-in were exercised in the real compiled binding.
Opting in (`KvRouterConfig(enable_session_prefix_index=True)`) is accepted; a
deliberate near-miss kwarg (`enable_session_prefix_indx`) is rejected with a
`TypeError`, which is the control that makes the positive meaningful — without
it, "the kwarg was accepted" would prove nothing against a `**kwargs` sink. The
JSON wire form parses with the field true, with it false, and with it absent
(the field is `#[serde(default)]`), and refuses a non-boolean. Separately, the
stale-versus-rebuilt extension episode described above is an exact, if
unplanned, negative control on the new test itself: the same test fails against
a binding lacking the feature and passes against one that has it, so it has
teeth.
One incidental observation, checked before reporting: `KvRouterConfig` exposes
no getter for `enable_session_prefix_index`. That is not a gap in this PR —
only five of the config's fields have getters, and neither `use_remote_indexer`
nor `serve_indexer` has one. The new field follows the established
three-layer pattern (serde config, PyO3 signature, type stub, Python args)
identically to its nearest neighbours, and is correctly added to the v1.3
wire-compat "must be absent when default" list.
## The GPU smoke could not exercise the route-time hook
Recipe 07 was selected specifically because the route-time hook in
`lib/llm/src/kv_router.rs` — the branch that calls
`index.update_session_from_match(...)` and, on a final request,
`index.remove_session(...)` — has **no unit test**. Its helper
`deepest_matched_hash` is tested; the hook body is not. A smoke was the only
available way to reach it.
It could not be reached. The smoke ran with `--router-mode kv
--enable-session-prefix-index` on `Qwen/Qwen3-0.6B --load-format dummy`, and
the worker never registered: the health gate failed after 151 seconds because
the vLLM engine cannot initialize against this driver. This is recorded as a
failing run with a `needs-hardware` disposition, not massaged into a pass.
Two things were still established before the block bit, and they are worth
keeping. First, the flag is not rejected: the frontend CLI registers
`--enable-session-prefix-index` / `--no-enable-session-prefix-index`, and the
frontend started and bound HTTP with `--router-mode kv
--enable-session-prefix-index` with zero errors — which means the flag reaches
`KvRouterConfig` in the compiled binding end to end. Second, the card returned
to baseline (1 MiB) with no leaked engine.
What remains unproven is the hook itself. It is worth being precise about how
much a successful smoke would have proven, because the honest answer is: less
than one would like. The hook has no success-side logging, the index has no
Python binding surface, there are no metrics on it, and by design it does not
influence routing at all — the PR's own help text says "Nothing consumes the
index for routing decisions yet." So even on a working GPU, the only direct
observable would have been the *absence* of the failure-side
`tracing::warn!("failed to record session prefix match")`. A reviewer should
treat that hook as untested rather than assume a smoke would have covered it,
and the cheapest real fix is a unit test on the hook body, not a runtime smoke.
## Review observations for the maintainer
These are readings of the change, not validation failures. They are offered
because the validation was scoped to look for them.
The `_core.pyi` docstring the PR adds contradicts the PR's own code. It states
that "the router feeds the index from routing-lookup matches only" and that
"**Stored-block KV events carry no session ID**, so blocks a session produced
but never matched on a later lookup are not recorded." But this same PR adds
`SessionStoreUpdate::from_event`, which feeds the index from
`KvCacheEventData::Stored` events using `event.session_id_or_unattributed()` —
and `RouterEvent::session_id_or_unattributed` exists at HEAD precisely because
the stacked base #13806 added a `session_id` to those events. The docstring
reads like it was written against an earlier revision of the stack and not
updated. It is the user-facing description of an experimental feature, so the
drift is worth fixing.
`use_remote_indexer=true` combined with `enable_session_prefix_index=true` is a
silent no-op. `SessionStoreUpdate::from_event` returns `None` for
`Indexer::Remote`, and the `Remote` variant does not carry a
`session_prefix_index` field at all. The codebase already establishes the
precedent for guarding this class of mistake — `use_remote_indexer` and
`serve_indexer` are validated as mutually exclusive with an explicit error —
but no equivalent check pairs the new flag with the remote indexer. A user who
sets both gets an index that is silently never populated from events.
There is a keying asymmetry between the two feeds. The route-time hook keys on
`session.session_id()`, which only exists when a session context is present.
The event-time feed falls back to `UNATTRIBUTED_SESSION_ID` when the event
carries no session. That means every unattributed stored block in the process
lands in one synthetic session bucket, which competes for the same
`DEFAULT_MAX_SESSIONS` (16,384) LRU cap as real sessions and is never released
by the `session_final` path, since no request will ever mark that synthetic
session final. Whether that matters depends on traffic mix, but it is a
deliberate design question rather than an oversight to be assumed away.
## Reading the result
Four recipes are green on their merits: the editable install, Python lint,
Python unit tests, and code inspection. Recipe 02 is red, but red for a reason
that is not this PR's fault — verified by blob-identity rather than asserted —
and every scoped check that isolates #13807's own surface passes, including the
fan-out proof on the new required parameter. Recipe 07 is blocked by a
driver/toolkit mismatch in the sandbox and leaves the change's one untested
code path untested.
The change itself looks well-built: the new module is carefully tested, the
config field is wire-compatible and correctly defaulted off, and the plumbing
follows the existing pattern layer for layer. The reservations above are about
a stale docstring, an unguarded flag combination, and a design question about
unattributed events — none of which are build or test failures.
But the packet cannot honestly claim a pass. The mandated workspace check does
not build, and the one recipe selected to cover the change's only untested path
could not run. A pass would have to be a pass on a subset, and there is no
valid hybrid verdict.

Adding a comment to add for reviewers that as of 74a6e8e, is the order of indexer updates. Note that we have a guarantee that FlashIndexer will never be "behind" SessionPrefixIndexer in term of state updates. This is because SesssionPrefixIndexer is explicit downstream of FlashIndexer at the request ingest time; session frontier(s) update when FlashIndexer reports cache hits. |

Non-blocking: Two small performance improvements to consider:
- For multiple frontiers, check
frontiers.contains(&node)before walking ancestors. A repeated match across 64 frontiers with a 256-block trunk fell from 12.17 µs to 37 ns. - Preallocate
dominatorswith capacity forblock_hashes.len(). Replaying a 256-block stored chain fell from 3.44 µs to 1.48 µs.
These are local release microbenchmarks, using the median of three runs.

Validate it first, and for remote references materialize it locally before the generator sees it, so the generator is always handed a trusted local path. This brings the sglang diffusion path in line with the vLLM/omni and trtllm backends, which already validate the same field. Behavior change: local I2I/I2V references now require DYN_MM_LOCAL_PATH to be set to the allowed directory; previously any path was accepted. common/http: - validate_media_reference() returns a plain filesystem path for local references; local_media_reference() is an async context manager that fetches a remote one through fetch_bytes(policy=...), which revalidates every redirect hop, into a temp file removed on exit. data: is rejected -- a URI is not a path. - fetch_bytes() gained max_bytes, streaming through collect_capped at an explicit read granularity so the cap is an allocation bound and not only a rejection: a 128 MiB-decoded gzip body against the 64 MiB cap peaks at 68,032,217 bytes rather than the whole decompressed body. Content-Length is caller-controlled and absent when chunked, and aiohttp's read(n) returns at most n bytes, so neither a header check nor a single capped read suffices. Defaults to None, leaving existing callers unchanged. - DYN_MM_MAX_FILE_SIZE_MB makes that cap operator-tunable, in megabytes, as the SGLang arg it replaces was. Read per call; empty, unparseable or non-positive falls back to 64 with a warning, so a malformed value neither takes the worker down nor reads as unlimited. - Messages built from caller input are bounded via describe_media_source, moved from multimodal/media_source.py (it pulls in torch) into url_validator.py and re-exported from its old home; a no-op below 120 characters. - HttpStatusError bounds its .message attribute, not only the rendered string: errors.rs::extract_http_like_error reads .status and .message off this class by name and forwards .message on a 4xx without calling str(). Backend exception text is bounded head-and-tail, since aiohttp renders the host before the errno. - validate_local_path uses exc.strerror rather than the raw OSError, whose text repeats the filename, and now catches the ValueError that Path.resolve() raises on an embedded NUL so callers keep their 4xx-vs-5xx decision. Rebased onto ai-dynamo#14563 (single aiohttp backend); the httpx-side half of the max_bytes plumbing went with that backend. Adds only a comment to container/templates/vllm_runtime.Dockerfile, which matches the `vllm` path filter (container/templates/vllm_*) and so makes changed-files set vllm=true, which is what gates build-xpu and the heterog-test-px-dn / heterog-test-pn-dx jobs. What this exercises: - .github/workflows/pr-xpu.yaml (push to pull-request/[0-9]+, needs the xpu label) - .github/workflows/pr-xpu-heterogeneous.yaml (push; its guard deliberately skips the label gate) - .github/workflows/epd-test-template.yml (workflow_call, from the heterog jobs) - .github/scripts/test-filters.js (the brace fix from #22) - container/templates/vllm_runtime.Dockerfile rendered and built for device=xpu Not exercised: .github/workflows/xpu-heterogeneous-dispatch.yaml is workflow_dispatch only and has to be run by hand from the Actions tab. Every datatype was wrong, so spec-conforming clients cannot parse any tensor the RPC describes. Adds `oip_name()` next to `tensor::DataType::to_kserve` covering all fifteen proto variants (incl. FP16 and BF16) and mapping `TYPE_STRING → BYTES`. Original PR by @ayaangazali: ai-dynamo#14770. Reissued under a signed commit to unblock the copy-pr-bot signature gate; diff is byte-identical. .github/workflows/pr-xpu-heterogeneous.yaml; pin GPU_TAG to latest * .github/workflows/; add post-merge and nightly XPU heterogeneous CI Extract the XPU heterogeneous P/D pipeline out of pr-xpu-heterogeneous.yaml into xpu-heterogeneous-run.yml, a workflow_call reusable workflow, and call it from three thin trigger workflows so all three merge phases run the identical pipeline instead of drifting copies. xpu-heterogeneous-run.yml new, reusable. guard, changed-files, build-xpu, build-nvidia, resolve-images and both heterog tests, unchanged, plus 7 inputs. pr-xpu-heterogeneous.yaml reduced to the pre-merge trigger, the slash-command gate and the reaction. post-merge-xpu-heterogeneous.yaml new. push to main. nightly-xpu-heterogeneous.yaml new file, but the cron is MOVED, not added: it is the 0 23 * * * schedule that was already in pr-xpu-heterogeneous.yaml. No behaviour change per phase. force_all_tests replaces the old github.event_name == 'schedule' || github.event_name == 'issue_comment' expression with the same truth table: pre-merge passes github.event_name == 'issue_comment', nightly passes true. Post-merge also passes true, because a push to main has no PR base for .github/actions/changed-files to diff against, and post-merge exists to catch what per-PR gating missed. xpu-status-check stays a TOP-LEVEL job in each caller rather than moving into the reusable workflow. A job contributed by a reusable workflow reports to the Checks API as "run / xpu-status-check", so hosting it there would rename the context and leave any branch protection rule requiring xpu-status-check waiting forever on a check that no longer reports. The concurrency mapping stays byte-identical across all four workflows that touch this hardware, now including xpu-heterogeneous-dispatch.yaml. Three files do NOT get three slots: the cluster, the dynamo-system namespace and the onexpu-/onenvidia-rdma-kueue ResourceClaimTemplates are one global resource. The reusable workflow deliberately carries no concurrency block of its own, which would deadlock against the slot the caller's run already holds. Parameterised gpu_tag, model, tensor_parallel and runner as inputs so the callers can diverge; all default to the previously hardcoded values. Added workflow_dispatch to the nightly, without which a schedule-only workflow cannot be exercised before it reaches the default branch. Verified: all files parse; the four concurrency mappings are byte-identical; the reusable workflow declares no concurrency; every input each caller passes exists and every required input is supplied; nesting is depth 3 of the 4 GitHub allows. actionlint was not available to run, and will report queue:max as an unknown key in all four files, a known false positive. --------- Signed-off-by: Nikita Summary
Stacked on #13806 (session ID plumbing). See DEP #13279 for the architecture and detailed data-flow diagrams.
The core of this PR, before subsequent refinements, was developed in #13437.
--enable-session-prefix-index)SessionPrefixIndexerfor logical session-to-block lineage.BlockStored,BlockRemoved, andClearedevents after the corresponding physical-index worker lane drains.Overview: Data Structure
SessionPrefixIndexerstores one shared logical prefix forest plus worker-qualified session frontiers:Overview: Data Flow
SessionPrefixIndexerhas two update paths. Route-time matches associate reused G1 blocks with the session, while canonical KV events add stored lineage or adjust worker-local frontiers after physical residency changes.Routing-time update:
query_tiered_matches()-> selectresponse.best_worker-> read workerresidency_version->find_primary_match_details_ref()-> verify version -> enqueueSessionMutation::Matched->update_session_from_match()Event update:
RouterEvent->Indexer::try_apply_event()-> enqueue the event into the existing G1 indexer -> advance workerresidency_versionforRemoved/Cleared->SessionUpdateSenderwaits for the physical worker lane -> applySessionMutation::{Stored, Removed, Cleared}Overview: Class Methods
Query methods:
get_node_from_hash(block_hash) -> Option<NodeId>Finds the logical node corresponding to an external sequence block hash.
get_node(node_id) -> Option<LogicalNode>Returns the logical-node metadata for a node handle.
get_session_frontiers(session_id) -> Vec<(WorkerWithDpRank, NodeId)>Returns all worker-qualified frontier nodes for a session.
get_session_block_lineage(session_id, worker, anchor_hash) -> Result<Vec<Vec<ExternalSequenceBlockHash>>>Returns root-to-frontier block-hash paths for one session and worker, optionally beginning at an anchor block.
Update methods:
update_session_from_match(session_id, worker, matched_hash) -> Result<bool>Associates a route-time G1 match with the session and advances that worker’s frontier when appropriate.
update_session_from_stored_blocks(session_id, worker, parent_hash, block_hashes) -> Result<bool>Validates and creates or grafts an ordered stored-block path, then advances the worker-local frontier.
update_session_from_removed_blocks(worker, block_hashes) -> usizeRecedes worker-local frontiers affected by removed G1 blocks.
clear_worker_frontiers(worker) -> usizeRemoves every session frontier associated with a cleared worker and DP rank.
Diagnostics:
node_count() -> usizeandsession_count() -> usizeReport current logical-node and session counts.
Notes and TODOs
Current behavior:
BlockStoredevents create or graft logical lineage and advance the corresponding worker-local frontier.BlockRemovedevents recede affected worker-local frontiers to the nearest ancestor not included in the removal.Clearedevents remove all session frontiers associated with the affected worker and DP rank.residency_version. A route-time match records the version it observed and is skipped if that version changes before the match is applied, preventing SessionPrefixIndexer from restoring a frontier that FlashIndexer has removed.session_iddo not updateSessionPrefixIndexer.enable_session_prefix_indexis currently incompatible with remote-indexer mode.enable_session_prefix_indexrequiresuse_kv_events=trueandoverlap_score_credit > 0.BlockStoredevent can graft it into the known lineage.Follow-up work:
