Why and what changed

Uses the existing replay_context.session_id to label native engine requests and G1 stored-block events. This supplies the session attribution DynoSim needs to model Dynamo’s session id tracking (e.g. integration with SessionPrefixIndexer #13807), without introducing a second replay session field.

Dynamo request.agent_context.session_id
    → DynoSim replay_context.session_id
    → AISimulate engine::Request.session_id
    → KV stored-block event.session_id

The first mapping belongs to the companion Dynamo plumbing change; this PR implements the AISimulate portion.

  • Keep one replay ingress field: replay_context.session_id; allow session-only contexts without an authored request ID.
  • Forward the normalized ID to placement and native requests in aggregated and disaggregated replay, even when session reporting is disabled.
  • Keep synthetic reporting/grouping IDs out of engine attribution.
  • Append optional session metadata to native requests and stored-block events; carry it through request-local cache leases.

This follows the production Dynamo<->Engines paths for session_id plumbing Dynamo #14428 (request → engine), vLLM #51381 (engine → stored-block event), and Dynamo #13806 (event → router), supporting DEP #13279.

Review map

Start with replay/protocol.rs, the replay/native conversions, and engine/protocol.rs. Engine and KV-manager changes carry attribution; integration tests cover the complete path.

Walkthrough and compatibility

Replay context is the serving identity source. Trim whitespace and treat blank IDs as absent. Legacy loaders populate context from authored IDs, while generated row/grouping IDs remain reporting metadata. Anonymous legacy graph identity stays distinguishable in its digest and survives snapshot cloning.

Both prefill and decode legs carry the ID. G1 store events identify the triggering session, not exclusive ownership of shared blocks; G2 stores and removal events remain unattributed. Cache hashes, scheduling, eviction, and modeled timing do not change.

Legacy JSON remains valid. Exhaustive Rust literals for native Request and StoredBlocks must add session_id: None; replay DirectRequest gains no field. Dynamo needs the companion adapters and an AISimulate dependency bump. Retain/Invalidate policies and session indexing are separate changes.

Evidence

Validated locally and pushed as GPG-verified commit 33ebe972.

  • cargo test --offline -p aisimulate-core --lib replay:: — 436 passed.
  • cargo test --offline -p aisimulate-core --lib engine:: — 702 passed.
  • cargo test --offline -p aisimulate-core --test replay_session_placement — 4 passed, covering optional/blank IDs, anonymous inputs, disabled reporting, and execution parity across supported backends/topologies.
  • Formatting and git diff --check passed. No performance benchmark collected.

Modeling or data provenance

Session IDs are authored metadata. No timing constants or performance-model data change.

Tracking

AISimulate #454 adds separate peer-fetch hint transport through some of the same conversions.

Related historical PRs: Dynamo #11089 introduced session-aware replay routing; #12525 extracted the replay integration; AISimulate #121 populated agentic replay context. This patch connects that existing identity to the native engine.

Review in Change Stack →

📝 Summary

Risk: Medium. The three areas that need the most human attention are: session-ID propagation through aggregated and disaggregated replay; attribution of G1 stored-block events through request-local leases; and compatibility for Rust struct literals and serialized requests/events.

Behavior and contracts

  • ReplayRequestContext.session_id() trims surrounding whitespace and treats missing or blank values as absent. Replay uses this context value for placement and native request attribution. Synthetic reporting or grouping IDs are not used as engine attribution.
  • Native Request and DirectRequest and StoredBlocks gain optional session_id fields. Missing values deserialize as None and are omitted during serialization. Rust struct literals must now set the field explicitly.
  • G1 store events carry the lease’s session ID. The documented behavior leaves removals and G2 residency events unattributed. Session attribution does not change block hashes, scheduling, eviction, or modeled timing.
  • No configuration switch is added. Mapping Dynamo request context into replay_context is outside this change.

Evidence and readiness

The supplied summary reports replay and engine unit-test runs, placement tests across supported backends and topologies, formatting, and git diff --check as passing. It reports no performance benchmark. These results are author-reported; no test output or independent review findings were supplied. Review severity counts are unavailable. The supplied context says the change was awaiting a GPG-signed commit and push, so merge readiness is not established. Technical behavior and merge readiness are separate: the reported tests support the intended behavior, but they do not establish review approval or merge readiness.

Optional session IDs now flow from replay context through engine requests and scheduler leases into stored-block events. Replay loaders distinguish authored IDs from synthetic IDs. Serialization remains compatible when session IDs are absent.

Explanation

Downstream consumers remain stale. The PR adds session_id to aisimulate_core::engine::Request and StoredBlocks (crates/core/src/engine/protocol.rs:13-28,110-127) and correctly forwards it through local replay and KV-manager paths (crates/core/src/replay/components/engine.rs:1190-1201, crates/core/src/engine/kv_manager/sglang_backend.rs:1182-1189). However, Dynamo commit 2d8526fca45fa5ecd3b19604fa136dff34c38926 still constructs Request without the field (lib/mocker/src/grouped_scheduler/compatibility.rs:43-52) and constructs StoredBlocks without the field in two test consumers (lib/mocker/src/engine_observations.rs:117-129, lib/mocker/src/replay/offline/extensions/kv_events/mod.rs:267-279). Dynamo depends on this core crate at Cargo.toml:62. Its event adapter also drops StoredBlocks.session_id: dynamo_kv_event creates a KvCacheEvent without session attribution (lib/mocker/src/engine_observations.rs:23-62), while the downstream PlacementEvent contract has a session field and propagation method (lib/kv-router/src/protocols.rs:935-963). The PR tests cover the core path, but not these downstream Rust, serialization, or API consumers.

Resolution

Update all downstream Request and StoredBlocks literals. Forward DirectRequest.session_id into Dynamo Request construction. Preserve StoredBlocks.session_id when converting native events into Dynamo PlacementEvent or RouterEvent, including grouped, offline replay, artifact, and event-sink paths. Add absent/present serialization and API contract tests. Run Dynamo Rust tests and the relevant Python and CLI contract tests against the PR's core version.

Full details: Compatibility Boundaries

Explanation

The public Rust surface is not synchronized with Dynamo. This PR adds session_id to aisimulate_core::engine::Request at crates/core/src/engine/protocol.rs:13-27 and to StoredBlocks at :110-126. Dynamo HEAD 2d8526fca45fa5ecd3b19604fa136dff34c38926 still pins aisimulate-core to =0.13.0-dev.2 in lib/bindings/python/Cargo.toml:60-63 and its lockfile records 0.13.0-dev.2 at lib/bindings/python/Cargo.lock:34-41. Its Rust literals omit the new required fields, including Request in lib/mocker/src/generalized_live.rs:788-795 and StoredBlocks in lib/mocker/src/engine_observations.rs:117-130. The reviewed range changes no dependency, lockfile, release, or binding files. The JSON defaults preserve serialized compatibility, but they do not preserve Rust struct-literal compatibility. The documentation itself states that Rust literals must add session_id: None (docs/adapters/native-composition.md:112-114).

Resolution

Update Dynamo consumers to the reviewed aisimulate-core revision. Add session_id: None or the authored session ID to every affected Request and StoredBlocks literal. Update the exact dependency pin and lockfile. Release the Python wheel and Rust crate with synchronized version metadata, or document and test an approved compatibility strategy. Add an external-consumer compile check for these public structs while preserving the one-wheel plus one-crate artifact contract.

Full details: Review Evidence

Explanation

The visible description names the local test commands and results, and it reports boundary cases such as blank or optional IDs, anonymous inputs, disabled reporting, and execution parity. It does not provide the full description: the supplied body is truncated after <!-- cod. The missing text could contain the required fake-runner/production evidence distinction or an inactive nested-workflow claim. The reviewed diff changes no workflow files, but that does not establish what the omitted description says.

  • The KV router accepts optional session_id on named-map BlockStored events and propagates it into PlacementEvent; missing IDs remain None. The test does not exercise the vLLM or SGLang disaggregated session paths it claims to cover.

The test uses the default WorkerPoolSpec for both pools. It runs max_num_seqs = 1 with three requests at arrival_time_ms: 0.0. Each request has distinct token IDs (10 + i). No prefix sharing occurs.

Two gaps follow:

  • The assertion tokens[0] % 10 only checks the first token of each stored block. Blocks are unique per request, so this works. It would silently pass if a block mixed requests.
  • In disagg, the stored events may come from both the prefill and decode legs. The set check on sessions passes if only one leg attributes the session. A decode-leg regression would go undetected.

Add a per-stage assertion (for example, record stage in observe_engine_events, which already receives _stage). Then assert attribution for both Prefill and Decode stages.

🟡 Minor · Pass the normalized session ID through admission. · admission.rs:237-238

crates/core/src/replay/components/admission.rs:237-238
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Pass the normalized session ID through admission.

ReplayReadyArrival currently copies the raw context.session_id. If a request has a whitespace-only ID and a turn_index, admission can pass that raw value to on_session_metadata, while placement uses None. The report can therefore retain " " instead of None. The focused test does not include a turn_index, so it does not cover this path.

Suggested fix
-                        .map(|context| (context.session_id.clone(), context.turn_index))
+                        .map(|context| (context.session_id().map(str::to_owned), context.turn_index))

Apply the same change in drain_concurrency_requests.

Update the session ID passed through admission to use the normalized value

method while preserving `turn_index`, so whitespace-only IDs remain `None` when

Compare missing and authored session rows.

The current test applies a no-op timing change and compares the trace digest with itself. It does not detect whether synthetic_session_id contributes to the digest.

Add otherwise identical legacy rows with a missing session_id and with "agentic-session", then assert that their digests differ. The loader normalizes both rows to the same session value, so this comparison isolates the synthetic marker.
