fix(vllm): ship codec-free OpenCV for image inputs - #14361
yunzhoul-nv merged 39 commits into
Conversation
## Summary A multimodal model served with `--tokenizer-mode mistral` tokenizes images through `mistral_common`, which resizes every still image with `cv2.resize` inside `transform_image`. The runtime images deliberately ship no OpenCV, so plain JPEG and PNG input fails on that path even though no video is involved and NVDEC -- the hardware decoder the images do ship -- cannot help, because NVDEC decodes video only. Left alone, the gap surfaces from inside vLLM's multimodal profiling run, after the weights are already loaded, as an upstream `ImportError` whose suggested remedy (`pip install mistral-common[opencv]`) is the wrong one here: it resolves an unbounded OpenCV version and pulls transitive dependencies into the image's pinned stack. This adds a startup preflight in the vLLM worker that raises before `AsyncLLM.from_vllm_config`, and an error builder that names the validated, bounded spec and the bundled installer instead. The message text and the documented install are single-sourced from `VALIDATED_SPECS`, so they cannot drift. The docs gain a section for the case, and the installer's module docstring records that this is a tokenizer requirement rather than a codec gap. The image itself is unchanged: OpenCV stays out, and enabling image input on this path remains a deliberate, visible operator action. The preflight reads both config attributes through `getattr`, so a guard that runs on every startup can never be the thing that breaks startup. A contract test pins the two upstream names so a rename fails CI rather than silently disabling the check. ## Validation Reproduced first, on the unmodified tree: with no `cv2` installed, `mistral_common.tokens.tokenizers.image.transform_image` on a 64x64 PIL image raises ``ImportError: `opencv` is not installed``. - `pytest components/src/dynamo/vllm/tests/test_vllm_mistral_image_preflight.py components/src/dynamo/common/tests/multimodal/test_codec_errors.py -m "unit and gpu_0"` -- 18 passed. With the preflight reverted and the tests kept, 6 failed / 2 passed; with it restored, all pass. - Full CPU lane over the touched packages (`-m "pre_merge and vllm and gpu_0"`, 1103 selected): identical failure set before and after the change (12 pre-existing failures, unrelated), passing count 1089 -> 1097. - Against a real `VllmConfig` built from `AsyncEngineArgs` for `mistralai/Ministral-3-3B-Reasoning-2512` (`Mistral3ForConditionalGeneration`, vision config present): `--tokenizer-mode mistral` raises `MissingMediaDecoderError`; `--tokenizer-mode auto` is silent. - After installing the documented spec (`opencv-python-headless 4.14.0.94`), `transform_image` returns a (3, 64, 64) array and the preflight passes. - `pre-commit run --files <the six files> --hook-stage manual` -- all hooks pass. - `python3 docs/fern/scripts/docs_lint.py --scan docs` -- 0 errors; no finding names the edited page. Container build and the multi-process worker/frontend run are CI-owned here (no Docker daemon and a GPU driver too old for the installed torch build): `vllm-build`, `vllm-test`, and `vllm-compliance-audit` cover them. Automated evidence record — validation incompleteValidation status: incomplete Evidence summary: [3/5 validated · 1 runs in CI · 1 needs hardware] AI review assessment (advisory, not an approval): Validation result: incomplete. Every check that could run in the environment where this change was prepared passed, including a paired before/after run over the affected packages that showed no new failures. The single-GPU serving smoke could not run on that host at all: its CUDA 13.0 PyTorch build refuses the host's 12.8 driver, which was reproduced with bare PyTorch and no Dynamo code. No further iteration on that host could change this, so the check is left unproven rather than retried. Evidence audit: complete [3/5 validated · 1 runs in CI · 1 needs hardware] — the command report below comes from recorded runs. Commands and results [3/5 validated · 1 runs in CI · 1 needs hardware]Generated from the commands recorded during this run. Check 1Builds the changed Dynamo source and confirms that Python can import its compiled extension. Result: Passed ( Command: Not shown because the exact command contained private run data. Check 2Checks the changed files with the repository's fast lint and formatting commands. Result: Passed ( Command: Not shown because the exact command contained private run data. Check 3Runs the relevant Python unit tests without requiring a GPU. Result: Passed ( Command: Not shown because the exact command contained private run data. Check 4Builds the affected container image and checks its runtime setup. Result: Failed ( Command: Not shown because the exact command contained private run data. Details: No Docker socket here: 'docker info' exits 127 (binary absent), so the runtime image cannot be built or inspected in this environment. The image build is owned by the pre-merge jobs in .github/workflows/pr.yaml: vllm-build (builds the vLLM runtime image with inline_compliance), vllm-test (runs the pre_merge/vllm/gpu_0 suite inside that image), and vllm-compliance-audit (independent SBOM/OSRB audit of the built image). All three are gated on the 'vllm' path filter in .github/filters.yaml, which this change matches via components/src/dynamo/vllm/main.py and the new test file. Verified rather than assumed: these jobs have NOT run for this head commit -- it is on no remote branch and GitHub returns HTTP 422 'No commit found for SHA' for it. So the image build is unproven as of this run, and it is the CI lane, not this environment, that must prove it. Note the change adds no container layer: nothing under container/ or pyproject.toml is touched, so the image's codec surface is unchanged and no OpenCV is added. Check 5Starts Dynamo with vLLM on one GPU and sends a real request. Result: Failed ( Command: bash -c 'set -x; nvidia-smi --query-gpu=driver_version --format=csv,noheader; python3 -c "import torch; print(torch.__version__, torch.version.cuda); torch.cuda.init(); print(torch.cuda.get_device_name(0))"'Details: Attempted for real, not inherited: the frontend and the vLLM worker were launched exactly as the the validation command (Qwen3-0.6B, TP1, max-model-len 4096, --load-format dummy, --discovery-backend file). The frontend came up and answered {"status":"healthy","endpoints":[],"instances":[]}, but no worker ever registered; the worker exited 1 after ~45s. Root cause is the host driver, not the change: EngineCore dies in vllm/v1/worker/gpu_worker.py init_device -> torch._C._cuda_init() with 'RuntimeError: The NVIDIA driver on your system is too old (found version 12080)'. Reproduced with no Dynamo code at all: torch 2.11.0+cu130 against driver 570.124.06 (CUDA 12.8) raises the identical RuntimeError on a bare torch.cuda.init(). No CUDA context can be created on this host, so Section 1 is unreachable for any change and Sections 2 and 3 never run. One real signal did survive: the traceback shows execution reached AsyncLLM.from_vllm_config in components/src/dynamo/vllm/main.py, which is downstream of the new preflight, so the added check ran against a genuine vLLM-built config for a non-multimodal model and returned without raising -- it does not break ordinary worker startup. Live serving of the multimodal Mistral path needs a host whose driver matches the CUDA 13.0 torch build; in CI the vllm-test job runs this lane on GPU runners. |

Probing for the cv2 spec cleared the Mistral image preflight for an OpenCV whose native libraries are absent, so that deployment still met the upstream ImportError after the weights had loaded. Import cv2 instead, convert only ImportError, and keep the original exception as the cause. A worker started with --limit-mm-per-prompt image=0 never reaches the image tokenizer, because vLLM leaves a zero-limit modality out of multimodal profiling. Consult the image limit before requiring OpenCV so those text- and audio-only deployments keep starting. Signed-off-by: svc-glamr@nvidia.com <svc-glamr@nvidia.com>

🟡 Minor · Scope the VP8/VP9 statement to the optional Rust frontend decoder.

The
--frontend-decodingpath can decode VP8/VP9 input through FFmpeg, but the default backend path does not provide that decoder. The current bullet presents this as an unconditional runtime-image capability, so operators may omit the backend decoder package and receive an unsupported-codec error. Remove the bullet from the default input list or qualify it with--frontend-decoding.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

A cv2 that raises on import (not one that is absent) hit three paths that each degraded the remedy: - _vllm_opencv_spec() ran its probe with check=True, so the child's non-zero exit aborted the whole vLLM decoder install instead of falling back to the bounded spec. - The install hint for a broken carrier dropped --only-binary, letting pip build the codec-free sdist again. - A cv2 that fails to initialise inside load_bytes raises OSError, which no handler translated, so the actionable message was lost. Attribution is unchanged: an OSError that does not name the carrier, or an OpenCV that does have a video backend, still propagates untouched. There was a problem hiding this comment.
Approving at 8345843d. Both findings I raised are fixed, and I re-verified each by execution rather than accepting the reply.
Fixes confirmed
ships_cv2is now derived fromtorch.version.cuda, which resolves without a visible GPU (measured:torch 2.13.0+cu130 | torch.version.cuda = 13.0 | cuda visible: False). CPU/XPU images keep the OpenCV-absence assertion they had been losing.--dry-runnow prints--force-reinstall --only-binary opencv-python-headlessahead of the spec line, so the CLI no longer hands an operator a command that pip reports as already satisfied.
Reviewed the five new commits as changes in their own right, since fixes are where new defects enter:
- The new regression tests pin the new behaviour. Dropping
OSErrorfrom theexcepttuple failstest_decode_video_bytes_cv2_os_error_is_actionable; neutering_needs_binary_wheeltoFalsefails three tests intest_codec_errors.py. Full suite at this head:85 passed. - The
OSErrorwidening is correctly gated. An unrelatedOSError("[Errno 28] No space left on device")is re-raised untouched; only a cv2-attributable error on a backendless build converts. I checked all four failure shapes and the resulting operator message names the codec, the build state and the exact remedy. - The documented shell fallback is correct in both
shandbash, across all its branches — metadata present →==4.99.0.99, metadata absent butcv2importable →==4.99.0.*, neither → the bounded range. I also ran the case the thread did not mention, acv2that raises on import, and it correctly reaches the bounded range. Both pages carry byte-identical snippets.
Outstanding, both P3, neither blocking
avis a vLLM video backend, not audio-only —VideoBackend.load_bytesdispatchesbackend="pyav", and I decoded a VP9 clip through it on 0.28.0 withcv2unusable. The table still readsvLLM | audio | av, so an operator installing audio support also gets a software video path without that being stated anywhere.c7e39803changed the backendless-cv2 cause from a fixed string tostr(exc), which is unbounded, on the branch that now also catchesOSError. The motivation is sound — it is what surfaceslibGL.so.1: cannot open shared object filefor a broken build — and every message I could actually reach is library-generated and short. I could not construct an input-derived path to it, so this is an observation, not a finding; I raise it only because this module's own docstring exists on account of a decoder that once embedded a whole payload in its message. A length cap oncausewould retire the question cheaply.
Where verification stopped: I ran nothing against a real multimodal Mistral model, so the image-input path this PR exists to restore is unverified by me end to end. The heavy build and test lanes have not run on this head — that is yours, and I am not treating it as part of this bar. I authored no commits here.

Validate it first, and for remote references materialize it locally before the generator sees it, so the generator is always handed a trusted local path. This brings the sglang diffusion path in line with the vLLM/omni and trtllm backends, which already validate the same field. Behavior change: local I2I/I2V references now require DYN_MM_LOCAL_PATH to be set to the allowed directory; previously any path was accepted. common/http: - validate_media_reference() returns a plain filesystem path for local references; local_media_reference() is an async context manager that fetches a remote one through fetch_bytes(policy=...), which revalidates every redirect hop, into a temp file removed on exit. data: is rejected -- a URI is not a path. - fetch_bytes() gained max_bytes, streaming through collect_capped at an explicit read granularity so the cap is an allocation bound and not only a rejection: a 128 MiB-decoded gzip body against the 64 MiB cap peaks at 68,032,217 bytes rather than the whole decompressed body. Content-Length is caller-controlled and absent when chunked, and aiohttp's read(n) returns at most n bytes, so neither a header check nor a single capped read suffices. Defaults to None, leaving existing callers unchanged. - DYN_MM_MAX_FILE_SIZE_MB makes that cap operator-tunable, in megabytes, as the SGLang arg it replaces was. Read per call; empty, unparseable or non-positive falls back to 64 with a warning, so a malformed value neither takes the worker down nor reads as unlimited. - Messages built from caller input are bounded via describe_media_source, moved from multimodal/media_source.py (it pulls in torch) into url_validator.py and re-exported from its old home; a no-op below 120 characters. - HttpStatusError bounds its .message attribute, not only the rendered string: errors.rs::extract_http_like_error reads .status and .message off this class by name and forwards .message on a 4xx without calling str(). Backend exception text is bounded head-and-tail, since aiohttp renders the host before the errno. - validate_local_path uses exc.strerror rather than the raw OSError, whose text repeats the filename, and now catches the ValueError that Path.resolve() raises on an embedded NUL so callers keep their 4xx-vs-5xx decision. Rebased onto ai-dynamo#14563 (single aiohttp backend); the httpx-side half of the max_bytes plumbing went with that backend. Adds only a comment to container/templates/vllm_runtime.Dockerfile, which matches the `vllm` path filter (container/templates/vllm_*) and so makes changed-files set vllm=true, which is what gates build-xpu and the heterog-test-px-dn / heterog-test-pn-dx jobs. What this exercises: - .github/workflows/pr-xpu.yaml (push to pull-request/[0-9]+, needs the xpu label) - .github/workflows/pr-xpu-heterogeneous.yaml (push; its guard deliberately skips the label gate) - .github/workflows/epd-test-template.yml (workflow_call, from the heterog jobs) - .github/scripts/test-filters.js (the brace fix from #22) - container/templates/vllm_runtime.Dockerfile rendered and built for device=xpu Not exercised: .github/workflows/xpu-heterogeneous-dispatch.yaml is workflow_dispatch only and has to be run by hand from the Actions tab. The marker comment must be removed before this branch is ever merged. Every datatype was wrong, so spec-conforming clients cannot parse any tensor the RPC describes. Adds `oip_name()` next to `tensor::DataType::to_kserve` covering all fifteen proto variants (incl. FP16 and BF16) and mapping `TYPE_STRING → BYTES`. Original PR by @ayaangazali: ai-dynamo#14770. Reissued under a signed commit to unblock the copy-pr-bot signature gate; diff is byte-identical. Run one vLLM worker per GPU node, use stable Grove ordinals for cache-owner slots, and request GPU-local RDMA resources for engines and Guard services. Provide a deployment helper for rendering and selecting either variant. Run the KV state agent alongside vLLM for process-local host memory. In memory-service mode, keep KVCR and the state agent in a separate container so its Guard and shared-memory pool survive engine restarts. Document that restarting the services sidecar invalidates the MVP recovery contract and requires deployment-level replacement. Add manifest coverage and an opt-in two-host lifecycle test. Kill the source EngineCore, hold it offline, and verify that the promoted Guard serves its preserved cache to the surviving target. Correlate response equality and KVCR transfer metrics with transmit and receive counters from the selected active HCA to prove RDMA transport. .github/workflows/pr-xpu-heterogeneous.yaml; pin GPU_TAG to latest * .github/workflows/; add post-merge and nightly XPU heterogeneous CI Extract the XPU heterogeneous P/D pipeline out of pr-xpu-heterogeneous.yaml into xpu-heterogeneous-run.yml, a workflow_call reusable workflow, and call it from three thin trigger workflows so all three merge phases run the identical pipeline instead of drifting copies. xpu-heterogeneous-run.yml new, reusable. guard, changed-files, build-xpu, build-nvidia, resolve-images and both heterog tests, unchanged, plus 7 inputs. pr-xpu-heterogeneous.yaml reduced to the pre-merge trigger, the slash-command gate and the reaction. post-merge-xpu-heterogeneous.yaml new. push to main. nightly-xpu-heterogeneous.yaml new file, but the cron is MOVED, not added: it is the 0 23 * * * schedule that was already in pr-xpu-heterogeneous.yaml. No behaviour change per phase. force_all_tests replaces the old github.event_name == 'schedule' || github.event_name == 'issue_comment' expression with the same truth table: pre-merge passes github.event_name == 'issue_comment', nightly passes true. Post-merge also passes true, because a push to main has no PR base for .github/actions/changed-files to diff against, and post-merge exists to catch what per-PR gating missed. xpu-status-check stays a TOP-LEVEL job in each caller rather than moving into the reusable workflow. A job contributed by a reusable workflow reports to the Checks API as "run / xpu-status-check", so hosting it there would rename the context and leave any branch protection rule requiring xpu-status-check waiting forever on a check that no longer reports. The concurrency mapping stays byte-identical across all four workflows that touch this hardware, now including xpu-heterogeneous-dispatch.yaml. Three files do NOT get three slots: the cluster, the dynamo-system namespace and the onexpu-/onenvidia-rdma-kueue ResourceClaimTemplates are one global resource. The reusable workflow deliberately carries no concurrency block of its own, which would deadlock against the slot the caller's run already holds. Parameterised gpu_tag, model, tensor_parallel and runner as inputs so the callers can diverge; all default to the previously hardcoded values. Added workflow_dispatch to the nightly, without which a schedule-only workflow cannot be exercised before it reaches the default branch. Verified: all files parse; the four concurrency mappings are byte-identical; the reusable workflow declares no concurrency; every input each caller passes exists and every required input is supplied; nesting is depth 3 of the 4 GitHub allows. actionlint was not available to run, and will report queue:max as an unknown key in all four files, a known false positive. --------- Signed-off-by: Nikita Summary
The vLLM CUDA runtime needs OpenCV for Mistral still-image preprocessing. This change rebuilds the installed OpenCV version without video backends, preserving
cv2.resizewhile excluding the binary wheel's software video codecs.install_media_decoders vllmfor video and audio: it replaces codec-free OpenCV with a same-version binary wheel, installs missing PyAV, and verifies decoder availability in a fresh interpreter.Installing software decoders remains an explicit operator action that changes the container's media-codec surface. Other backend decoder mappings retain their validated version bounds.

Current head:
8345843d27ee45c99694273497e7397cc426b7a2.Full CI and Pre Merge passed on this exact head. The September 16, 2026, 05:00 UTC snapshot has 74 successful check runs, 40 skipped checks, no failures, and no queued or running checks. CodeRabbit's commit status is successful. Skipped checks are not counted as passes.
The vLLM runtime and EFA image builds, AMD64/ARM64 tests, two-GPU tests, compliance audit, and all four vLLM deployment tests passed. The completed AMD64 test log explicitly confirms
test_vllm_image_ships_no_software_video_codecspassed. The backend, deployment, and Dynamo runtime status gates also passed. No unexpected skipped jobs were identified against the workflow's active filters. All 31 review threads are resolved. GitHub reports
CLEANandAPPROVED; dmitry-tokarev-nv approved this exact head, andrmccorm4has an existing approval. The approving review's two P3 observations (PyAV documentation and diagnostic cause length) are explicitly nonblocking and were left unchanged. A formal additional re-review request fornv-anantsreturned HTTP 404 and assigned no reviewer. Existing bot requests were not repeated. This maintenance pass made no source changes or commits and ran no local tests, builds, or benchmarks. Validation used remote CI. The source head is unchanged; the PR has not been merged.
