https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/23037 changed settings.compactIdleThreads from a boolean to a mode string. Every client built before it decodes that field as boolean | null, so the server config snapshot fails to decode at settings.compactIdleThreads and the client drops the connection ("T3 Code on … did not answer"). That happens even when the setting is at its default, because the default "onReturn" is sent as a string. So since https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/23037, every older client breaks against any newer server.

Fix

• compactIdleThreads is a boolean on the wire again (true means "beforeCacheExpires"), and the mode moves to a new idleCompaction field. The server writes both, on load and on every patch.
• Settings saved by servers since https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/23037, with the mode string in compactIdleThreads, are migrated into idleCompaction on load.
• A shipped client's boolean patch maps to a mode; turning it off keeps "Never" instead of resetting to the default.
• Clients from https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/23037 onward still decode the boolean through their legacy branch. Fixed clients read idleCompaction, and still read servers that put the mode string in compactIdleThreads.
• The settings panel sends the form the connected server reads: idleCompaction, the mode string, or the boolean for servers from before modes. A newer client never sends a value an older server rejects.

• I connected to a running server with v0.1.1-nightly.20261020.3411's own contract schemas:
  • against a server from main (0.1.2-preview.20261022.3511): the config snapshot fails with Expected boolean | null at [0]["config"]["settings"]["compactIdleThreads"]
  • against this branch, with the same settings: the config and the shell snapshot both decode
• New tests:
  • the encoded settings keep compactIdleThreads a boolean for every mode
  • a mode string saved to settings.json is migrated on load
  • a shipped client's boolean patch is translated
  • idleCompactionPatch picks the form for each server generation
• vp run check:changed passes (format, lint, knip, typecheck, tests).
