fix(server): Codex no longer offers a one-click update for installs it can't detect - #22504
Conversation
…t can't detect codex update only recognizes npm, Homebrew, and $CODEX_HOME standalone installs. Codex installs at any other path now resolve to manual-only instead of falling back to the native updater, which always failed. Part of pingdotgg#22487.
ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused Codex maintenance bug fix that suppresses a known-failing one-click update for unrecognized installations while preserving recognized and package-manager update paths. The shared resolver change is additive and covered by a targeted regression test. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

markdown image such as , or a raw \\host\share path, was classified as a host file. Rendering it asked the server for a signed asset URL, and the server's realpath on the resulting UNC path made Windows open an SMB session and send the user's NetNTLMv2 response to the attacker's host, with no click and no tool call. File-link chips did the same through filesystem.getMetadata, which stats every absolute path, and storage cleanup stats the store paths in a worktree's pnpm manifest, which an agent can write. Network paths (two leading separators, as Windows reads them: \\h, //h, /\h) now only resolve inside the thread's project, so projects on a share keep working: - clients block them in markdown images and stop treating them as file links - the web stops asking for their metadata - the server refuses them for media assets and file reads outside the project, never stats one for metadata, and storage cleanup ignores a pnpm manifest that names one - each check hands the filesystem the resolved path it approved, since Windows reads a `\\?\` path as written, `..` included Co-authored-by: Claude Opus Part 1 of #22487. Sibling: #22506
Summary
codex updateonly detects npm, Homebrew, and$CODEX_HOME/packages/standalone/installs. Codex installs at any other path fell back tocodex updateanyway, so the provider offered an Update button that always fails (exit 1,Could not detect the Codex installation method).Only Codex sets
requiresCommandPath. Claude, OpenCode, and Pi keep their native-updater fallback.Evidence
Before: [Bug]: Codex update always fails on a remote host with a root-owned system-wide Codex install, and the toast hides the reason #22487: a root-owned
/usr/local/lib/codex/releases/rust-v0.162.1-.../bin/codexgets a one-click Update that fails every time. New resolver test onmain:After: same test passes, and
installPathis kept so the manual guidance names the install (vp test run src/server/maintenanceResolver.test.ts: 63 passed; Codex driver tests: 42 passed).Isolated dev server (web), fake
codexreporting 0.1.0 at.../usr/local/lib/codex/releases/rust-v0.1.0-test/bin/codex, symlinked from.../usr/local/bin/codexand set as the binary path. Codex shows as outdated with "Update Codex with the app or tool that installed it." and no Update button. (The "Known broken version" tooltip is because the fake reports 0.1.0.)Not checked: a real remote SSH host with a root-owned install. The UI check used a local fake binary at the same path shape.
Merge Danger
Door: two-way
Blast Radius: Codex-only
Codex installs at paths T3 does not recognize now show manual steps instead of a button. If
codex updatecould have handled such a path (for example a Homebrew cask whenbrewis not on the server's PATH), that user loses the one-click path and follows the manual steps.Written with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code (via T3 Code). UI verified by Codex GPT-6.1-Sol with computer use.
