Pull Request

Description

Makes bestax's public API match what's documented, in both directions: two test-only internals stop shipping, and a public API that shipped undocumented gets its docs.

  • bulma-ui (@allxsmith/bestax-bulma)
  • create-bestax (create-bestax)
  • docs (@allxsmith/bestax-docs)
  • Other (please specify):

Leaked internals

  • __test_exports__ is gone from Card.tsx. It existed so the tests could reach renderFooter, and renderFooter itself turned out to be dead code: Card renders its footer inline and never calls it. Both are deleted. The footer tests now go through Card's footer prop, covering falsy values, a single node, an array and the class prefix, so they test what actually renders.
  • isBrowser is deprecated, not removed, as decided on [Bug] bulma-ui: export * ships two test-only internals as public API, while the public notification() API is undocumented #763: removing an export in a patch could break anyone who imported it. Its TSDoc says so and points to typeof window !== 'undefined'. bulma-ui: remove the deprecated isBrowser export (next major) #780 tracks removing it at the next major.
  • The export list is now guarded. index.test.ts lists every public runtime export, sorted, so adding or removing one is a line in the diff rather than a side effect of export *. I appended an export to Card.tsx to watch the test fail, then removed it.

notification() documented

  • The Notification page has a new "Programmatic API" section, modeled on Toast's: the NotificationContainer setup and every method.
  • The 2→3 migration guide's example now mounts the container. Without one nothing appears, so the guide's example rendered nothing.
  • Both snippets were type-checked against src/index.ts, and a misspelled option in the harness fails it, so the check is real.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Programmatic notifications now announce themselves to assistive technologies, with urgent announcements for warnings and errors and polite announcements for other types.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Card footers now appear only when they contain a non-empty value.
  • Documentation

    • Expanded notification examples and guidance cover container placement, display options, queuing, and accessibility.
    • Clarified that notification placement is controlled by the container and that notifications sent before it mounts are not displayed later.
    • Marked isBrowser as deprecated and documented an alternative browser check.

…list

Card exported __test_exports__ so its tests could reach renderFooter,
a helper Card no longer calls; both go, and the footer tests now go
through Card itself. Dropdown's isBrowser is deprecated and leaves at
the next major (#780). index.test.ts now lists every public export, so
a new one is a deliberate change. NotificationOptions.position's TSDoc
says it is ignored today (#779).

Refs #763
The Notification page gains a Programmatic API section covering
NotificationContainer and every method, and the 2-to-3 migration
guide's example now mounts the container it needs to show anything.

deep-review: read-only: don't install, build or run tests; CI covers them on this head.

Priorities, in order:

  1. bulma-ui/src/__tests__/index.test.ts: is an explicit export list the right guard against export * leaks, and is anything in it that shouldn't be public?
  2. bulma-ui/src/components/Card.tsx and its tests: renderFooter was dead code. Do the new Card-level footer tests cover everything the deleted tests claimed, except the 0 case the PR body explains?
  3. docs/docs/api/elements/notification.md and the 2→3 migration guide: is every statement true of bulma-ui/src/elements/Notification.tsx, including the position caveat?

Skip: isBrowser's removal timing (decided on #763, tracked in #780).

Walkthrough

The changes update Card footer rendering and tests, define an explicit runtime export list, and document the programmatic notification API. Programmatic notifications also receive alert semantics and color-dependent live-region settings.

Changes

Public API and component behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Card footer rendering and tests
bulma-ui/src/components/Card.tsx, bulma-ui/src/components/__tests__/Card.test.tsx
Card omits the footer for empty arrays and other falsy values. Tests exercise footer rendering through the Card component, including item classes and configured prefixes. The test-only renderFooter export is removed.
Runtime export list and isBrowser documentation
bulma-ui/src/__tests__/index.test.ts, bulma-ui/src/components/Dropdown.tsx
The export test compares sorted runtime export names with an explicit list. The isBrowser documentation marks it deprecated and describes a browser check callers can use instead.
Notification API behavior and documentation
bulma-ui/src/elements/Notification.tsx, bulma-ui/src/elements/__tests__/Notification.test.tsx, docs/docs/api/elements/notification.md, docs/docs/guides/getting-started/migration/bulma-ui-2-to-3.md, scripts/lib/api-sources.mjs, bestax-mcp/data/catalog.json, bestax-mcp/data/components/Notification.json
Programmatic notifications use role="alert" and set aria-live based on color. The API documentation, migration example, generated import companions, and catalog entries include NotificationContainer and notification. The docs describe container positioning, queuing, display options, closing notifications, and behavior before the container mounts.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 48914

Callers following the deprecation guidance could get a different result when document is absent. Correct the replacement guidance; the remaining risk is narrow and does not otherwise block merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 48914

The notification API remains within the existing browser-side package boundary, and no newly exposed privileged path was found. Shared notifications can outlive a mounted container, but this behavior predates the PR. Whether consuming applications isolate notifications across user sessions remains unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The independently reachable notification path is package-importing application code to the module-owned store and any mounted containers in that browser module instance. The examined change does not establish a new network, credential, or service authority path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Callers submit message content through notification methods; the module owns publication and rendering, and exposes close and closeAll for cleanup. The scoped source shows no session-bound ownership check.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Container unsubscription prevents updates to an unmounted subscriber but does not clear shared state. This is a pre-existing lifecycle property, not an observed PR-introduced security finding.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If a consuming application can switch users without reloading the module, clear notifications on that transition and guard in-flight operations against publishing results for the prior user.

Explanation

The PR includes an unrelated Card behavior change. CardComponent now suppresses the footer for 0 and empty arrays, and Card tests add coverage for that behavior. Removing renderFooter and replacing its test-only export support #763, but changing footer rendering semantics does not support the linked issue's export or Notification documentation objectives. The notification position and announcement documentation is connected to documenting the public API.

# Severity Area Finding Location
1 🟡 Minor Correctness The migration snippet still renders nothing: notification.* runs at module scope before NotificationContainer mounts, and subscribe never replays state docs/docs/guides/getting-started/migration/bulma-ui-2-to-3.md:303-317
2 🟡 Minor API IMPORT_COMPANIONS has no Notification entry, so the page's generated Import block and the MCP server's import field still say import { Notification } — #763's "not in the MCP index" half is unclosed scripts/lib/api-sources.mjs:239-245, bestax-mcp/data/components/Notification.json
3 🔵 Advisory API "The Notification page covers every option" is false — the page omits hasDelete and pauseOnHover, and (deliberately) position. Dropping the clause is enough docs/…/bulma-ui-2-to-3.md:298
4 🔵 Advisory Accessibility Programmatic notifications carry no role="alert"/aria-live (Toast does), so an item that appears dynamically is never announced; the page's Accessibility section only describes the static component. Pre-existing — worth an issue alongside #779 bulma-ui/src/elements/Notification.tsx (NotificationItem)
5 🔵 Advisory Robustness notification.subscribe does not replay current state, so every call made before the container mounts is invisible until the next call, then all arrive at once. Root cause of #1; pre-existing and untracked bulma-ui/src/elements/Notification.tsx (subscribe / NotificationContainer)
6 🔵 Advisory Coverage The guard is runtime-only. export * re-exports types too, and #763 explicitly cited dist/types/components/Card.d.ts; a future internal export type leaks with no test failing. The ./constants subpath is also outside its scope bulma-ui/src/__tests__/index.test.ts:3-8
7 🔵 Advisory API The list blesses six undocumented constants as public — checkboxColors, checkboxSizes, radioColors, radioSizes, switchColors, switchSizes. Unlike valid* (which helpers/valid-values.md documents) they appear nowhere in docs/. Cheap moment to decide bulma-ui/src/__tests__/index.test.ts
8 🔵 Advisory Correctness <Card footer={0}> renders a bare 0 as a child of .card with no .card-footer. The PR body discloses it as "Not filed", so unlike #779 nothing tracks it bulma-ui/src/components/Card.tsx:182

Overall: The three priorities hold up well. (1) The explicit list is the right guard, and React 18/19 compatibility passing on this SHA proves it matches the real export surface exactly; nothing in it is newly wrong, and isBrowser is the only clear leak (out of scope per the steer) — the *Colors/*Sizes constants are the only other names I would question (row 7). (2) The Card-level footer tests do cover everything the deleted renderFooter tests claimed — falsy, single node, mixed array, and the class prefix (now through ConfigProvider, which is how Card actually reads it) — with only the 0 case dropped, and the PR body is right that the old assertion tested code that never ran. (3) Almost every docs statement checks out, including the position caveat: nothing in NotificationItem or NotificationContainer reads NotificationOptions.position, so "currently ignored… set it there" is exactly true, and the container's six position values match NotificationPosition. Focus first on finding #1 — the guide's snippet was the stated defect and, as rewritten, it still shows nothing, for a second reason the PR did not spot.

Residual risk:

  • Type-only leaks (open). Object.keys sees value exports only, so the .d.ts half of #763 stays unguarded. Row 6. Not posted inline because the test's own comment scopes itself honestly to "runtime".
  • Other entry points (open, narrow). ./constants resolves its types to dist/types/helpers/bulmaClassHelpers.d.ts, which exports cursorClasses and the @internal createBulmaClassHelpers. scripts/constants-subpath.test.mjs asserts exports arrive, never that the set is exact.
  • Other test-only exports — refuted. Grepped src/ for test-only, Not part of the public API, @internal and __test: __test_exports__ has no remaining reference anywhere in the repo, and every @internal hit is either a prop TSDoc or lives in bulmaClassHelpers.ts, which useBulmaClasses.tsx re-exports by explicit name list rather than export * — so neither cursorClasses nor createBulmaClassHelpers reaches index.ts.
  • A new export * line slipping past the guard — refuted. Any new value export changes Object.keys(IndexExports) and fails the exact-equality assertion; both sides are .sort()ed, so ordering cannot mask an addition.
  • MCP/catalog staleness from the docs edit — refuted. gen-mcp-index.mjs lifts examples from ## Usage only; neither Toast.json nor Notification.json contains the string "Programmatic", so the new section does not make gen:mcp:check stale. The import field does come from IMPORT_COMPANIONS, which is why finding #2 needs pnpm gen with it.
  • Skills not updated (open, likely deliberate). skills/bestax-layout-scaffold/SKILL.md:124 still frames Notification as a static element "you have to place, position and dismiss yourself", and NEAR_MISS_FACTS in check-conformance.mjs lists ToastContainer/<DialogContainer /> with no notification equivalent. #763 named the skills; steering builders to Toast is defensible, just worth confirming it is a choice rather than an omission.
  • Per the steer I did not install, build or run tests; the empirical leg rests on the passing React 18/19 jobs for this SHA and on reading Notification.tsx's listener wiring directly. Build and Test was still in progress when this review was written.

🏄 Nice clean-up set, dude — the export list is a solid reef break that'll stop internals drifting out to sea, and the Card tests finally surf the wave that actually breaks. Just that migration snippet's still paddling out before the container's even in the water, so patch that and it's good to go.

…mount

The Notification page's Import now names NotificationContainer and
notification, so the generated block and the MCP index's import field
carry them. The migration example calls notification from a handler,
after the container mounts, since a call made earlier doesn't show
when the container does (#782); the page and the container's TSDoc
say the same.

Thanks for the deep review. Where each finding landed, in 666ae99:

  1. Migration example: now calls from a click handler, after mount (replied on the thread). The root cause is [Bug] bulma-ui: toasts and notifications shown before their container mounts don't appear when it does #782.
  2. Import and MCP: the Import block and the MCP import field now name all three exports (replied on the thread).
  3. "Covers every option": that clause is gone. The guide now says "More on the Notification page."
  4. Announcements: filed as [A11y] bulma-ui: programmatic notifications aren't announced to screen readers #783. Toast's role="alert" / aria-live split is the model.
  5. No replay in subscribe: filed as [Bug] bulma-ui: toasts and notifications shown before their container mounts don't appear when it does #782, covering Toast too. The smallest fix seeds each container from the current list and leaves the public subscribe alone.
  6. Runtime-only guard: leaving it runtime. The test's comment scopes itself that way, and a declaration-level guard needs the build output, which the jest suite doesn't have. A type-only leak can't change runtime behavior, so the runtime list covers what can break a consumer.
  7. The six *Colors / *Sizes constants: the list records what ships today rather than blessing it. They were public before this PR, so whether they stay is a separate call.
  8. footer={0}: filed as [Bug] bulma-ui: Card footer={0} renders a stray 0 #784.

On the skills: they steer builders to Toast for transient messages, and that's deliberate. With two programmatic APIs, recommending the one with announcements and positions keeps generated apps simpler.

All the new issues are on the tracker, #778.

Deep review (verify) — 2 resolved · 0 open

# Severity Area Finding Location
1 🟡 Minor Correctness Migration snippet's notification.* calls ran at module scope, before NotificationContainer mounted → verified fixed, resolved docs/docs/guides/getting-started/migration/bulma-ui-2-to-3.md:313
2 🟡 Minor API Generated Import region and MCP index omitted NotificationContainer / notification → verified fixed, resolved docs/docs/api/elements/notification.md:133

Overall: This pass settled the two threads the earlier deep review left open and reviewed no commits — no fresh review of the current code was performed, and no new findings were raised. Both fixes hold up against the source: the migration example now calls notification from a SaveButton click handler (every method and the indefinite / close(id) shapes check out against bulma-ui/src/elements/Notification.tsx, and Button, NotificationContainer and notification are all real exports of src/index.ts), and IMPORT_COMPANIONS in scripts/lib/api-sources.mjs:247 now carries the Notification entry, with the regenerated page region, bestax-mcp/data/components/Notification.json:41 and bestax-mcp/data/catalog.json:668 all agreeing on the three-name import. Per the steer this was read-only — CI on this head owns build, typecheck and the generated-artefact staleness gates, which is where any pnpm gen drift would surface.

Residual risk:

  • The underlying no-replay behavior (notification.subscribe registers a listener but never replays current state, Notification.tsx:361) is still present — both fixes document around it rather than changing it. It is tracked in #782 and carried as a caveat in NotificationContainer's TSDoc and the page's Setup note, so it is an accepted risk on the record rather than an open defect in this diff.
  • Verify mode raises no new findings by construction, so anything in the commits pushed since the original review is unexamined here and needs a fresh run to be covered.

🏄 Two little ripples flagged last set, both cleanly carved and closed out — nothing left flapping in the lineup. Paddle it in, this one's good to go.

deep-review: fresh

Read-only: do not install, build or run tests; CI is green on this head.
Review the whole PR as it stands now, including 666ae99 (the Import widening, the regenerated scripts/lib/api-sources.mjs and bestax-mcp/data, and the migration example rewrite), which no fresh pass has covered yet.
Priorities: 1. bulma-ui/src/__tests__/index.test.ts and the Card.tsx / Dropdown.tsx changes. 2. docs/docs/api/elements/notification.md and the 2-to-3 migration guide against bulma-ui/src/elements/Notification.tsx. 3. The generated artefacts agree with their sources.
Skip: isBrowser removal timing (#780) and the follow-ups already filed (#779, #782, #783, #784).

Deep review — 2 blocking · 5 advisory

# Severity Area Finding Location
1 🟠 Major Accessibility Programmatic notifications carry no role and no aria-live on any element in the path, so notification.danger(…) is silent to assistive tech and gone in 3 s — and NotificationItem hardcodes every prop it passes, so a consumer cannot add them. Toast and Dialog both announce. This PR is what makes the API recommended. bulma-ui/src/elements/Notification.tsx:331
2 🟡 Minor Coverage The rewritten falsy-footer test.each keeps 4 of the old 5 values and drops 0 — the only one the inline footer in Card mishandles, rendering a stray 0 outside .card-footer. An empty-array footer renders an empty footer bar and is also uncovered. bulma-ui/src/components/__tests__/Card.test.tsx:257
3 🔵 Advisory API The closing sentence claims every call returns the notification id, directly under a block that ends in notification.close(id) and notification.closeAll(), both void. Deleting the trailing clause (everything from ", and every call returns" onward) leaves the true half — the block already shows const id = notification.show(…). docs/docs/api/elements/notification.md:177
4 🔵 Advisory API skills/ is untouched, though #763 names it as one of the three places notification() is missing. skills/bestax-layout-scaffold/SKILL.md:124 and skills/bestax-form/SKILL.md:223 still put Notification in the avoid column as static page elements you have to place, position and dismiss yourself, so an agent following the skills never reaches the API this PR documents. skills/bestax-layout-scaffold/SKILL.md:124
5 🔵 Advisory Robustness The header comment says a test-only export ships unless this list stops it, which is not the mechanism: the list stops nothing from shipping, it fails a test. index.ts still uses export *, the leak path #763 named in its fix direction. Dropping the unless this list stops it clause makes the comment exact. bulma-ui/src/__tests__/index.test.ts:8
6 🔵 Advisory Robustness The guard covers only the root entry and only its runtime exports. Object.keys cannot see a type-only leak — and #763 specifically cited dist/types/components/Card.d.ts declaring __test_exports__ — while the second public entry point, ./constants, has no export-list pin at all: scripts/constants-subpath.test.mjs asserts exports arrive, not which ones. bulma-ui/src/__tests__/index.test.ts:206
7 🔵 Advisory API Six names the list now enshrines as public appear nowhere under docs/docs: checkboxColors, checkboxSizes, radioColors, radioSizes, switchColors, switchSizes — the same undocumented-public-API class as the second half of #763. Worth a triage pass now that the list makes them deliberate. bulma-ui/src/__tests__/index.test.ts:151

Overall: The change is sound and the leaked-internals half is clean — I grepped the whole tree and no reference to __test_exports__ or renderFooter survives anywhere, isBrowser still has its two genuine uses (Dropdown.tsx:155 and the module spies in Dropdown.test.tsx) so deprecate-rather-than-remove holds together, and the exact-equality export guard is a real improvement over the old single toContain assertion. The riskiest part is what the docs half now recommends: notification() is promoted to a peer of toast on the API page while its programmatic path carries no live region at all, which is a WCAG 4.1.3 (AA) miss on exactly the danger and warning messages the new section demonstrates — look at finding 1 first and decide whether to fix it here or split it out. Finding 2 is a one-test question about behavior the PR body already acknowledges; findings 3 through 7 are for the record and should not hold the merge.

Residual risk:

  • Generated artefacts agree with their sources — refuted as a risk. IMPORT_COMPANIONS is itself inside a generated:import-companions region, produced by gen-api-sources.mjs scraping every API page Import region for imports naming more than one export; gen-api-docs.mjs:128 and gen-mcp-index.mjs:635 then both read it back. So the page region, bestax-mcp/data/components/Notification.json:41 and bestax-mcp/data/catalog.json:668 all derive from the single new entry at scripts/lib/api-sources.mjs:247, and that entry sits where the generator traversal puts it (alphabetical within elements/, between ListItem and OrderedList). I also checked the round trip survives the new prettier-wrapped, trailing-comma form: the scrape does a comma split, then trim, then filter(Boolean), which drops the empty tail — and the seven-name Table import already exercised that path, so it is not newly load-bearing. One wrinkle for the record: gen:api-sources is not part of pnpm gen and has no :check script, so the entry is only reachable by running it explicitly; gen:api-docs:check is what catches a divergence, from the page side.
  • Recurrence of the leak class — partly open. The runtime root surface is now pinned exactly, so a future test-only value export fails index.test.ts loudly. Two routes stay unguarded and are advisory rows 6 and 7 rather than findings: a test-only type export, invisible to Object.keys; and the ./constants subpath, which bulma-ui/CLAUDE.md documents as serving bulmaClassHelpers.ts whole — including @internal createBulmaClassHelpers and cursorClasses, neither re-exported at the root nor pinned by any test.
  • The mount-ordering defect the earlier round raised — refuted. notification.subscribe only adds to the listener Set (Notification.tsx:279-284) and never replays notifications, so the docs claim that a call made before any container mounts does not appear when one does is accurate, and both rewritten examples now call from a handler after mount. Tracked as #782 and carried in the NotificationContainer TSDoc.
  • Docs cross-links and section placement — refuted. The link ../components/toast.md#programmatic-api resolves: docs/docs/api/components/toast.md carries a Programmatic API heading. The new section sits between Usage and Accessibility, which is the page-specific-extras slot in the managed section order (docs/CLAUDE.md) and the same slot Toast uses.
  • Not a risk, noted: saveChanges() in the migration snippet is undefined, matching the existing house placeholders (YourRoutes in the same PR, restoreFile() on the Toast page), so I did not raise it.

🏄 Clean two-way paddle out, dude — junk exports off the board, the notification() API finally on the map with the container it needs, and the generated stuff all lines up when you trace it end to end. Only thing dropping in on the set is that screen readers still cannot hear a word the notifications say. Patch that little wipeout and this one is glassy.

…oters

A notification shown through notification() now renders role="alert",
assertive for danger and warning and polite otherwise, the way a Toast
does. Card renders no footer for 0 or an empty array, where it drew a
stray 0 or an empty footer bar.

Closes #783
Closes #784
The Notification page's accessibility list covers the programmatic
announcements. The "every call returns the id" clause goes, since
close and closeAll return nothing, and the export-list comment no
longer says the list stops anything shipping.

Thanks for the fresh review. Where each finding landed:

  1. Announcements (blocking): fixed in 3b2ecbd, which closes [A11y] bulma-ui: programmatic notifications aren't announced to screen readers #783 (replied on the thread).
  2. 0 and [] footers (blocking): fixed in 3b2ecbd, which closes [Bug] bulma-ui: Card footer={0} renders a stray 0 #784 (replied on the thread).
  3. "Every call returns the id": deleted in 489148a. The block above it shows const id = notification.show(…).
  4. skills/: unchanged on purpose. Those lines steer builders away from a static <Notification> for transient messages and toward Toast, which is still the right default. notification() is documented where people look it up, on its API page.
  5. "Unless this list stops it": deleted in 489148a.
  6. Type-only leaks and ./constants: no change. A type-only leak can't change runtime behavior, and pinning declaration output needs the build, which the jest suite doesn't run. The root runtime surface is the part that can break a consumer, and it's pinned.
  7. The six *Colors / *Sizes constants: filed as [Docs] bulma-ui: document or retire six public color and size constants #789 to document or retire them.

The newest focus comment still asks for fresh, so the next label cycle reviews all of this.

Deep review — 1 blocking · 5 advisory

# Severity Area Finding Location
1 🟡 Minor Accessibility role="alert" sits on the notification root, whose first child is the aria-label="Close notification" delete button, and role=alert implies aria-atomic=true — so every programmatic notification announces as "Close notification, ". Toast, the stated model, puts the message first. bulma-ui/src/elements/Notification.tsx:338-346
2 🔵 Advisory Accessibility role="alert" is applied unconditionally with aria-live varying, rather than the role="status"/aria-live="polite" default #783 asked for. Some AT hard-code alert as assertive and ignore a polite override, so a success notification may still interrupt. Deliberate Toast parity; on the record, not a blocker. bulma-ui/src/elements/Notification.tsx:340
3 🔵 Advisory API skills/ is untouched although #763 names it as one of the three surfaces missing notification(). skills/bestax-layout-scaffold/SKILL.md:124 and skills/bestax-form/SKILL.md:223 still describe Notification as a static page element you place, position and dismiss yourself, which the documented API contradicts. Deleting that characterising clause leaves the Toast recommendation intact. skills/bestax-layout-scaffold/SKILL.md:124
4 🔵 Advisory Coverage The guard is root-entry and runtime-only. Object.keys cannot see a type-only leak, and #763 specifically cited dist/types/components/Card.d.ts declaring __test_exports__; the second published entry, ./constants, has no exact pin at all. The test comment scopes itself honestly to "runtime". bulma-ui/src/__tests__/index.test.ts:2-7
5 🔵 Advisory API The list now blesses names that appear nowhere under docs/docs/api: checkboxColors, checkboxSizes, radioColors, radioSizes, switchColors, switchSizes, plus the *Base primitives (InputBase, SelectBase, TextAreaBase, DateInputBase, DateTimeInputBase, TimeInputBase), which only the prose guides mention. Same undocumented-public-API class as the other half of #763. bulma-ui/src/__tests__/index.test.ts:151
6 🔵 Advisory API Asymmetric caveat: NotificationOptions.position now says it is ignored, but ToastOptions.position (bulma-ui/src/components/Toast.tsx:42) still reads as if it works, even though #779 covers both and ToastContainer passes its own position to every item (line 496). bulma-ui/src/components/Toast.tsx:42

Overall: Sound, and the two defects the previous pass left open are genuinely fixed at the source rather than papered over in tests — Card gained a real hasFooter guard (so #784 is closed, not just asserted) and NotificationItem now carries a live region with the Toast politeness split. The riskiest remaining piece is the shape of that live region, not its presence: because it wraps the default-on close button and role=alert is atomic, the assistive-tech output for the very call the new docs section demonstrates leads with "Close notification". Look at finding 1 first; it is a contained change and the existing announcement tests keep passing. Everything else in the table is for the record. I also settled and resolved both of my open threads — the role/aria-live one and the falsy-footer one — rather than leaving them for a later pass.

Residual risk:

  • An all-falsy array footer still renders an empty bar (open). hasFooter tests footer.length > 0, not whether any item renders, so footer={[cond && <Button />]} with cond false is [false] — length 1, truthy — and draws a .card-footer holding one empty .card-footer-item. Unchanged from before the diff (an array was always truthy), so not a regression, and the new test.each does not cover it. The code comment claims only what it delivers: falsy scalars and [].
  • The no-replay behaviour behind the original docs defect — refuted as an in-diff defect. notification.subscribe still only adds to the listener Set (Notification.tsx:277-283) and never replays notifications, so a call made before any container mounts surfaces alongside the next call. Tracked as #782 and stated in three places that agree with the code: the container TSDoc, the page Setup note, and the migration guide prose. Both examples now call from a handler.
  • A test-only value export creeping back — refuted. expect(Object.keys(IndexExports).sort()).toEqual(PUBLIC_EXPORTS) is exact equality on both-sides-sorted arrays, so an addition cannot hide behind ordering. __test_exports__ and renderFooter have no remaining reference anywhere in the tree, and isBrowser keeps its two real uses in Dropdown.tsx and the module spies in Dropdown.test.tsx, so deprecate-not-remove holds together.
  • Type-only leaks and the ./constants subpath — open. Row 4 above; scripts/constants-subpath.test.mjs asserts exports arrive, never that the set is exact, and bulma-ui/CLAUDE.md documents that subpath as serving bulmaClassHelpers.ts whole, @internal members included.
  • Generated-artefact drift from the docs edits — refuted. Both MCP fields that derive from the page moved in lockstep with it: the import triple from the new IMPORT_COMPANIONS entry and the accessibility string from the new bullet, in bestax-mcp/data/components/Notification.json and catalog.json. exampleCount correctly stayed at 7 because gen-mcp-index.mjs lifts examples from the ## Usage section only, so the new Programmatic API section adds none. Section order also holds: page-specific extras sit between Usage and Accessibility per docs/CLAUDE.md:76, the same slot Toast uses.
  • Announcement regressions elsewhere — refuted. The role/aria-live pair is added in NotificationItem only, so the static <Notification> is unchanged, and no other suite in the repo queries getByRole("alert") against a notification.
  • Empirical basis, given the read-only steer. React 18 compatibility and React 19 compatibility are green on 489148a, and each runs build, typecheck, typecheck:tests and the full bulma-ui jest suite — so the export-list equality, the six-value footer test.each and the five announcement cases all really pass, on both majors. Build and Test was still in progress when this was written; it owns the 99% coverage bar, lint, format, gen:mcp:check, check:conformance and check:urls (the new #programmatic-api anchor and the ../components/toast.md#programmatic-api link both resolve by inspection).

🏄 Second set rolled in clean, dude — the Card footer got patched at the reef instead of the shoreline, and the notifications finally have a voice. Only thing left is that the voice opens with "Close notification" before it says what happened, a bit like shouting the exit sign before the wave. Tiny trim and this one is glassy.

…lert

The live region sat on the notification root, which holds the close
button ahead of the message, so every announcement began "Close
notification". It now wraps only the message: role="alert" for danger
and warning, role="status" otherwise. isBrowser's deprecation note
names both window and document, and ToastOptions.position gets the
same "ignored through the container" caveat as Notification's (#779).
…ills

The Notification page says the message announces as an alert or a
status, without the "like a toast" comparison. The form and layout
skills keep recommending Toast but drop the clause calling Notification
a static element, which the documented notification() API contradicts.

Thanks for the fresh review. Where each finding landed:

  1. "Close notification" leads the announcement (blocking): fixed in 4c649e0, which scopes the live region to the message (replied on the thread).
  2. alert everywhere: fixed by the same change: status (polite) by default and alert for danger/warning, as [A11y] bulma-ui: programmatic notifications aren't announced to screen readers #783 specified.
  3. skills/: trimmed in 69fad9f. Both skills still recommend Toast for confirmations, and drop the clause calling Notification a static element.
  4. Type-only and ./constants: no change, for the reason given last round.
  5. Undocumented public names: the six constants are [Docs] bulma-ui: document or retire six public color and size constants #789. The *Base primitives are documented in the form guide, just not on API pages of their own.
  6. Asymmetric position caveat: fixed in 4c649e0. ToastOptions.position now says it places a standalone <Toast> but is ignored through toast.show(). [Bug] bulma-ui: toast.show and notification.show ignore their position option #779 covers fixing both.

I also fixed CodeRabbit's isBrowser note (4c649e0) and resolved that thread.

Deep review — 0 blocking · 6 advisory

# Severity Area Finding Location
1 🔵 Advisory Accessibility The polite region is created together with its content — NotificationContainer returns null while items.length === 0, so nothing pre-exists for AT to watch. role="alert" is announced on insertion; role="status" commonly is not, so a success/info/uncolored notification may stay silent while the page's Accessibility bullet says it announces. This is the split #783 asked for and it reverses the direction of my own earlier advisory, so it goes on the record rather than back into the loop. bulma-ui/src/elements/Notification.tsx:350, :377
2 🔵 Advisory API The Toast page's programmatic example still passes position: 'bottom-center' to toast.show() — which the props row this PR adds to the same page says is ignored, so the page now contradicts itself ~50 lines apart. Not raised as a blocker because #779 names this exact example and prefers honoring the option, which would make the example correct again. docs/docs/api/components/toast.md:306
3 🔵 Advisory Robustness The guard is root-entry and runtime-only. index.ts still uses export * — the leak mechanism #763's fix direction asked to close — so a future internal export type ships with this test green, which is precisely the dist/types/components/Card.d.ts half of #763. ./constants has no exact pin either (scripts/constants-subpath.test.mjs asserts exports arrive, not which). The comment scopes itself honestly to "runtime". bulma-ui/src/__tests__/index.test.ts:56-61
4 🔵 Advisory API The list now blesses as public several names with no page under docs/docs/api: checkboxColors, checkboxSizes, radioColors, radioSizes, switchColors, switchSizes, plus the *Base primitives (InputBase, SelectBase, TextAreaBase, DateInputBase, DateTimeInputBase, TimeInputBase). Same undocumented-public-API class as #763's second half, and the list is the cheap moment to triage it. bulma-ui/src/__tests__/index.test.ts:207
5 🔵 Advisory API skills/ still never mentions notification(), though #763 names it as one of the three surfaces missing it. The trim removes the clause the documented API contradicted, but leaves the "Not this" cell as a bare Notification/Message with no reason — and that section's own framing is that agents ship the "not this" column when the reason doesn't land. skills/bestax-layout-scaffold/SKILL.md:124
6 🔵 Advisory Correctness footer={0} and footer={[]} now render nothing. #784 explicitly sanctioned "no footer", and it matches how header and image already treat falsy values, so this is the right call — but CardProps.footer's TSDoc and the Card page still read as plain content, so a numeric 0 silently disappearing is undocumented behavior for a patch release. bulma-ui/src/components/Card.tsx:55, :151

Overall: Sound, and both defects the previous pass left open are fixed at the source rather than papered over — Card gained a real hasFooter guard (closing #784 on the terms the issue set) and the live region now wraps only the message, so the announcement no longer opens with "Close notification". I verified the PR's claims empirically without running anything: Build and Test, React 18 compatibility and React 19 compatibility are all green on 69fad9f0, which is what proves the exact-equality export list matches the real surface; I also re-derived the list's sort order by code point end to end and found no ordering error. The riskiest remaining piece is the shape of the new live region (row 1), not its presence — a human should decide whether the polite half deserves a region the container seeds, and note that #783/#784 close on merge via the commit footers while #779/#780/#782 stay open by design.

Residual risk:

  • A test-only internal leaking again through export * — refuted for runtime root exports: the list is exact equality (Object.keys(IndexExports).sort()), and the three build/test jobs green on this head prove it matches. __test_exports__ is gone everywhere — grepped __test_exports__|__internal|TEST_ONLY|test-only across bulma-ui/src, scripts, eslint-plugin/src and bestax-mcp/data, zero hits. Open for type-only exports and the ./constants subpath (row 3).
  • Generated-artefact drift from the hand-edited map — refuted. IMPORT_COMPANIONS is regenerated by scraping each page's ## Import (scripts/gen-api-sources.mjs:206-225), so the committed entry is a fixed point with the page; it also sits exactly where the path-sorted walk puts it (elements/listitem → notification → orderedlist). exampleCount: 7 correctly stays put because the MCP generator only harvests fences under ## Usage, and the new blocks are under ## Programmatic API. The ToastProps TSDoc edit cannot stale eslint-plugin/src/generated/metadata.ts — it carries no prop descriptions at all. gen:mcp:check and gen:eslint-meta:check are green on this head.
  • The documented API still not being reachable — notification() is now on its page, in the generated Import region, and in both MCP artefacts. Open: NotificationOptions gets no rendered props table (gen-api-docs.mjs renders <X>Props only), so hasDelete, pauseOnHover and the duration default live in TSDoc alone; combined with row 5, an agent following the skills still never reaches the API.
  • The announced-silently class — refuted for danger/warning; open for the status half (row 1). NotificationContainer's null-while-empty early return means no container-level region can pre-exist, so this cannot be fixed inside NotificationItem.
  • Position caveat asymmetry — refuted: ToastProps.position (the type toast.show's options extend) now carries the same caveat as NotificationOptions.position, and I confirmed the mechanism at Toast.tsx:499-500, where position={position} is spread after {...toastProps}, so the container always wins. Only the example in row 2 is still out of step.

🏄 Two sets flagged, two sets carved, and this third paddle-out turned up driftwood on the sand and nothing in the water. Card's footer and the notification's voice both land clean — only ripple left is whether a polite whisper actually carries. Send it.

Thanks for the fresh review: nothing blocking, and every thread is resolved. This PR stands as is, and the advisories are tracked:

  1. Polite region created with its content: filed as [A11y] bulma-ui: polite programmatic notifications may not be announced, since their status region appears with its text #790. Its fix, a persistent region from mount, pairs with [Bug] bulma-ui: toasts and notifications shown before their container mounts don't appear when it does #782's work on the container.
  2. The Toast page's position: 'bottom-center' example: [Bug] bulma-ui: toast.show and notification.show ignore their position option #779 prefers honoring the option, which makes that example correct again. It's next in the tracker after this merges.
  3. Type-only leaks and ./constants: unchanged, as in earlier rounds.
  4. Undocumented public names: the constants are [Docs] bulma-ui: document or retire six public color and size constants #789. The *Base primitives are covered in the form guide.
  5. Skills: they recommend Toast for confirmations, and that recommendation stands. notification() is documented on its API page.
  6. footer={0} rendering nothing: that's the behavior [Bug] bulma-ui: Card footer={0} renders a stray 0 #784 sanctioned, and it matches how header and image treat falsy values.
