Closes #641.

The problem

as accepts any React.ElementType (#188), but every prop type stayed pinned to one element, so the declared types were wrong in both directions at once:

<Button as="div" ref={createRef<HTMLDivElement>()} /> // rejected, though it works
<Button as="div" href="/x" /> // compiled, href silently dropped

Navbar.Item and Menu.Item were worse — a [key: string]: unknown index signature turned excess-property checking off entirely, so <Navbar.Item dropdown as="div"> passed.

CodeRabbit raised this twice on #637 and both threads were declined there as out of scope, with the reasoning recorded: fixing only the ref would leave a component whose ref is precise and whose thirty inherited props are not. This is that follow-up.

Scope

Eight components, not the five the issue lists — exploration found Link, Avatar and Reveal carrying the identical defect, and leaving them would have been the same inconsistency the issue argues against.

Component Change
Button, LinkButton, Navbar.Link generic props, ref from as
Link, Avatar, Navbar.Item, Menu.Item generic props, ref forwarding added
Reveal generic props, no ref (see below)

Each splits into a <Name>OwnProps interface intersected with ComponentPropsWithoutRef<T>. forwardRef cannot express a generic component, so the public signature arrives by a cast to PolymorphicComponent — a new types-only helper at bulma-ui/src/helpers/polymorphic.ts. An interface cannot extend a generic Omit, so the props type has to be an alias; worth knowing before anyone tries.

Three deliberate exceptions:

  • Reveal forwards no ref. It owns the node it observes for scroll intersection, and when as is a component that node is a wrapper div rather than the element as names. A ref derived from as would point at the wrong thing.
  • Avatar keeps href/target/rel as its own props. They are what selects its element ('a' with an href, 'figure' without), so they have to be accepted before as is known. Its type parameter defaults to React.ElementType for the same reason — there is no single default element to name.
  • Menu.Item's ref goes to the inner element, not the wrapping <li>, because as is what names it. The <li>-bound props are now declared explicitly, which also removed five as unknown casts that existed only because the index signature degraded every member to unknown.

One runtime change, and it was not in the plan

I opened this claiming types only. That claim turned out to rest on a bug, and it took four rounds of review to find the bottom of it.

Button stripped nine form-control attributes from every non-button as, matching on their spelling alone. Three separate defects fell out of that:

  1. A custom component never received its own props — <Button as={Custom} name="x" /> type-checked and rendered without the name Custom requires, while ComponentPropsWithoutRef<T> promises the caller those props arrive.
  2. autoFocus and type were dropped from targets that legitimately own them (autoFocus is global; type on an <a> is the MIME hint the derived props now type it as).
  3. <Button as="input" name="query" value="Search" /> rendered an input the form submits nothing for, and a form-control allowlist I tried in between still lost formAction on an input and value on an option.

Each fix replaced one guess about a table React already has with a slightly better guess. So the strip stops enumerating. The types already restrict a caller to what the target accepts — that is what this PR is for — which leaves it as a backstop for JavaScript consumers and spread objects only, and it is now narrow enough to justify: the five submit-override attributes, on an <a>. Everything else reaches the element, where React warns about an unknown attribute rather than silently losing a form field's value.

One exception rides alongside, because it is not inert: disabled is still stripped where the element does not own it. Bulma styles .button[disabled] (background, border, shadow, opacity), so letting a spread disabled through to an as="span" would render it greyed out where main rendered it normally — a visible change on a types-only release. disabled gets a closed set (the HTML spec's seven elements), which is what makes it enumerable where the general question was not.

That leaves the runtime delta against main at inert attributes now appearing in the DOM — name, value and form on targets that do not own them. [disabled] is the only attribute selector Bulma applies to a button, so none of the rest has a visual or behavioural consequence.

A dead end worth recording: I first tried deriving the answer from the DOM (key in document.createElement(tag)). It reports name on an <a> — the obsolete anchor name — and jsdom implements no formAction at all, so it would have stripped a valid input prop in tests while passing in a browser. Wrong in a way the suite could not catch.

Everything else is types only — 4138 tests pass, the additions aside.

Type-level tests needed a home that is actually checked

The acceptance criteria ask for type-level tests in both directions. Nothing in this repo type-checks a test or a story today, for two independent reasons: the root tsconfig sets isolatedModules, which puts ts-jest on its transpileModule path, and bulma-ui/tsconfig.json excludes __tests__, *.test.tsx and *.stories.tsx. Every existing @ts-expect-error in a test file is a dead comment.

So the assertions live in bulma-ui/src/__typetests__/, which tsc --noEmit does read — meaning pnpm typecheck and the React 18/19 matrix both enforce them, and a directive that stops being an error fails the build as TS2578. I verified that bites in both directions before relying on it.

Two config edits support that: jest.config.js excludes the directory from collectCoverageFrom (JSX would otherwise instrument as uncovered lines), and rollup.config.js excludes it from the emitted types. The jest config is on the AI-loop's refusal list, which is part of why #641 was done by hand.

The API-docs extractor needed teaching

It reads types from source syntax, so the new shape degraded it silently — the dangerous direction. The cast defeated propsInterfaceName, and a sub-component with no resolvable props type is skipped outright, so Navbar.Item and Navbar.Link would simply have vanished from navbar.md while the MCP index committed props: []. It also defeated componentFunction (every Default cell would have emptied), and the catch-all row looks for an HTML*Element substring a polymorphic base does not carry.

scripts/lib/props-extract.mjs now unwraps the cast, reads the render function's parameter type, renders a type parameter as its constraint (so as still shows React.ElementType, byte-identical to before), and describes a polymorphic base as what it is:

... — All props of the element or component as renders (default <button>) and Bulma helper props

"props", not "attributes": with as={RouterLink} what passes through is that component's props. A props type it cannot name at all is now a hard error with an actionable message rather than an empty table. Nine new cases in scripts/props-extract.test.mjs cover it.

While writing this I checked two further widenings the design called for — inheritsDom and an inherited-defaults rule — and dropped both after measuring that they changed no output. Only the inherited-flag half was load-bearing (without it all 18 of Button's own props would be mislabelled inherited in the MCP index).

Docs and skills

  • routing.md loses its const ButtonLink = Button as React.FC<ButtonProps & LinkProps> workaround — that cast is now both unnecessary and invalid, since a generic component is not a React.FC.
  • The "their props allow extra keys" claim is gone from navbar.md, menu.md and the layout-scaffold skill. to still compiles; the reason changed, and it is now checked against the router's own link type.
  • library-contributor.md gains the rule, so the next component to take an as prop does not rebuild the bug.
  • Forwarded-ref usage sections and stories for the four components that gained one.

What review caught

Five rounds, 15 defects in my own work. The ones a gate would never have caught:

  • A blanked summary in the shipped MCP index. Splitting Reveal into a named function (to restore eslint's component detection) moved its TSDoc off the exported const; Reveal.json committed empty strings and every gate stayed green.
  • A props table that would have dropped from 19 rows to 2. Making the public aliases distributive — the obvious fix for a real inconsistency — defeats the extractor's syntactic heritage walk. Reverted and tracked as [Bug] bulma-ui: the public *Props aliases don't distribute like their components do #667 rather than trading a docs regression for a type-level one.
  • <Button as="input"> losing the field's name and value, above.
  • A test named for a guard it never asserted — zero assert.throws in the file, so the loud-failure guard could stop firing under a name promising coverage.

Earlier rounds, in the same spirit:

Three defects in my own work, all fixed in fdaf123 and answered on their threads:

  • AvatarProps defaulted its type parameter to React.ElementType. My reasoning was that Avatar has no single default element. But ComponentPropsWithoutRef of the whole constraint spreads across every element at once and accepts anything — <Avatar name="Ada" bogusProp={1} /> compiled. That is the exact false positive this PR removes, reintroduced on the one component that tempted it. Now defaults to 'figure', with a test holding every polymorphic component to naming a concrete tag.
  • The custom-component stripping bug above.
  • avatars.md regressed from the seven concrete size presets to a bare AvatarProps['size'], because lookupMemberType indexes interfaces and AvatarProps is now an alias. This is precisely the silent degradation I warned about two sections up and then walked into while skimming my own diff. Fixed; that page is byte-identical to main again.

One finding declined on evidence: typing the useRef in the docs example would break it. docs/src/theme/CodeBlock/index.js builds its LiveProvider with no language prop, so react-live defaults to jsx and would parse <HTMLElement> as a JSX tag. No live block in any of the 81 pages uses a type argument.

Verification

  • pnpm all green — 4136 tests, bulma-ui coverage 99.63 / 99.12 / 99.76 / 99.83
  • pnpm check:conformance (20 rules), gen:api-docs:check, gen:catalog:check, gen:mcp:check all green
  • 749 generator tests green
  • Typechecked a consumer against the built dist/types — the good usages compile and the bad ones are rejected through the published .d.ts, not just from source
  • React 18/19 matrix is CI's; note pin-react.mjs deliberately does not pin @types/react, so PolymorphicRef is defined via ComponentPropsWithRef<T>['ref'] rather than React.ComponentRef to stay resolvable on older type packages

Follow-ups, not in this PR

All filed, so none of this rests on someone remembering:

Release

fix(bulma-ui), a patch — decided deliberately, and worth stating what it does and does not rest on.

Review found one case that genuinely regressed working code: a union-typed as (<Button as={cond ? 'a' : 'button'} href="/x">) lost every prop not common to both members, because Omit<A | B, K> keys off only the shared keys. That is fixed, not documented — PolymorphicProps distributes now. With it gone, the code that stops compiling was already silently wrong: props dropped at runtime, or waved through by an index signature that turned off checking entirely.

Two things a reviewer should still weigh:

  • It can break a consumer build. The routing guide's Button as React.FC<ButtonProps & LinkProps> cast is the clearest case — deleted here, since a generic component is not a React.FC.
  • The runtime backstop is narrower than main, though only for attributes that are inert where they land (name, value, form). The one with a visible consequence, disabled, is still withheld from elements that do not own it.

Neither is hidden in the changelog; both are here because they are judgment calls, not facts.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Button, Link, LinkButton, Avatar, Menu.Item, Navbar.Item, and Navbar.Link now support flexible as rendering with props matched to the selected element or custom component.
    • Refs can be forwarded to supported rendered elements and custom components.
    • Element-specific navigation and form attributes are handled more accurately, including custom elements.
  • Documentation

    • Added forwarded-ref examples and expanded guidance for polymorphic components and routing integrations.
    • Updated component references to clarify inherited props.
  • Tests

    • Expanded coverage for polymorphic rendering, ref forwarding, custom elements, and type validation.

`as` accepts any `React.ElementType` (#188), but every prop type stayed
pinned to one element, so the declared types were wrong in both
directions: `<Button as="div" ref={createRef<HTMLDivElement>()}>` was
rejected though it works, while `<Button as="div" href="…">` compiled and
the href was silently dropped. `Navbar.Item` and `Menu.Item` were worse —
a `[key: string]: unknown` index signature turned excess-property
checking off entirely, so `<Navbar.Item dropdown as="div">` passed.

Each affected component now splits its props: a `<Name>OwnProps`
interface for what the library adds, intersected with
`ComponentPropsWithoutRef<T>` for the attributes of whatever `as`
renders. `forwardRef` cannot express a generic component, so the public
signature arrives by a cast to `PolymorphicComponent` — a new types-only
helper in `src/helpers/polymorphic.ts`. An interface cannot extend a
generic `Omit`, so the props type has to be an alias.

`Link`, `Avatar`, `Navbar.Item` and `Menu.Item` gain ref forwarding,
which the pattern's third leg needs and they did not have. `Reveal` gets
the props but no ref: it owns the node it observes, and when `as` is a
component that node is a wrapper `div` rather than the element `as`
names. `Avatar` keeps `href`/`target`/`rel` as its own props, because
they are what selects its element before `as` is known.

No runtime change. `Button` still strips button-only attributes when `as`
is not a button — the types reject them now, but a JavaScript consumer or
a spread object can still deliver them.

Type-level assertions live in `src/__typetests__/`, not in a test file:
the root tsconfig sets `isolatedModules`, which puts ts-jest on its
transpile-only path, and `bulma-ui/tsconfig.json` excludes `__tests__`
and every `*.stories.tsx`. Nothing checked an `@ts-expect-error` in
either. `tsc --noEmit` does read `src/__typetests__`, so `pnpm typecheck`
and the React 18/19 matrix both enforce these, and a directive that stops
being an error fails the build.

The API-docs extractor reads types from source syntax, so the new shape
degraded it silently: the cast defeated `propsInterfaceName` (a
sub-component with no resolvable props type is skipped outright, so
`Navbar.Item` would have vanished from navbar.md) and `componentFunction`
(every Default cell would have emptied), and the catch-all row looks for
an `HTML*Element` substring that a polymorphic base does not carry. It
now unwraps the cast, reads the render function's parameter type, renders
a type parameter as its constraint, and describes the polymorphic base as
what it is. A props type it cannot name at all is a hard error rather
than an empty table.

Closes #641
The library-contributor reference already covers `forwardRef` and
`displayName` but said nothing about `as`, so the next component to
accept a `React.ElementType` would have been written the way the eight in
#641 were: props pinned to one element, rejecting correct code and
accepting incorrect code at the same time.

Names the escape hatch too — a literal union like `Title`'s needs no
generic at all.

The public polymorphic APIs currently permit some attributes that are silently discarded, reject valid union-target props, and include a non-compiling generated example. These consumer-facing typing and documentation defects should be resolved before merge.

…tom props

Three defects the review of #661 found in #661.

`AvatarProps` defaulted its type parameter to `React.ElementType`, on the
reasoning that Avatar has no single default element — it picks `'a'` or
`'figure'` from `href` at runtime. But `ComponentPropsWithoutRef` of the
whole constraint spreads across every element at once and accepts
anything: `<Avatar name="Ada" bogusProp={1} />` and a stray `download`
both compiled. That is the false positive this work exists to remove,
reintroduced on the one component that tempted it. The parameter defaults
to `'figure'` now — the element a no-`href` avatar actually renders — and
the anchor props it can additionally take stay declared on its own props.
A test holds every polymorphic component to naming a concrete tag.

`Button` stripped eleven button-only attributes from every non-button
`as`, matching on their spelling alone. For an intrinsic tag that is
right: React would render them as invalid HTML attributes. For a custom
component it was not, and the new types made the contradiction explicit —
`ComponentPropsWithoutRef<T>` promises the caller that `T`'s props reach
`T`, so `<Button as={Custom} name="x" />` type-checked while `Custom`
never received the `name` it requires. Stripping now applies to intrinsic
tags only. `LinkButton` inherits the fix.

`lookupMemberType` indexed interface declarations only, so a lookup type
naming a polymorphic props type stopped resolving: `avatars.md` and the
MCP index regressed from the seven concrete size presets to a bare
`AvatarProps['size']`. It falls back to the `*OwnProps` interface that
holds the members.

The middle one is a runtime change, which #641 said it would not make.
It is the right call anyway: the types now assert a forwarding guarantee
the runtime was quietly breaking, and a required prop vanishing is worse
than the invalid-attribute warning the strip list was written to avoid.
…apps

The skill edits in this PR landed as `fix(bulma-ui)`. That releases the
library, but create-bestax bundles the same skills and its release config
refuses every commit scoped elsewhere, and `templates/skills` is a
gitignored build artifact carrying no tracked diff that could trigger one.

One of those edits is a correction, not an addition:
`bestax-layout-scaffold/references/layout-components.md` said `Menu.Item`
and `Navbar.Item` accept a router's `to` because "their props allow extra
keys". After #641 that is false — the index signatures are gone and the
props follow `as`. A scaffolded app would keep handing agents the old
reason for a rule that still holds, which is how a wrong mental model
outlives the code it described.

Carries the `PolymorphicComponent` example fix with it, per the rule in
create-bestax/CLAUDE.md and #597.

Valid intrinsic props are still dropped by Button, and the first-party migration tool emits JSX newly rejected by these types.

  • Navbar.Link is polymorphic now, so its ref does not always point to an <a>; with as="button" or a custom component it points to that rendered element. The sentence currently contradicts both the implementation and the generated ref row.

`CustomLink` went unused when the button-only-attribute test moved to
`as="a"`, and its old name still claimed to be about a custom component —
which is now the opposite of what the code does, since a custom `as`
receives its props. The custom-component case has its own test beside it.

Caught by CI's lint, not by my `pnpm all`: that script is a `&&` chain, an
earlier generator-test failure stopped it before `pnpm run lint`, and one
`Tasks:` summary instead of three is what that looks like.

Intrinsic non-button elements still lose valid props at runtime despite the new polymorphic types accepting them.

bulma-ui/src/typetests/polymorphic.tsx:116

  • The type-test rejection section has no Avatar case, so the exact regression previously found—no-as Avatar calls accepting arbitrary props—could return while tsc remains green. The extractor test only verifies that a concrete default is documented; add direct compile-time rejection coverage (and a mismatched-ref case) for Avatar's public signature.
    docs/docs/api/components/navbar.md:394
  • Navbar.Link is polymorphic too, so its ref does not always point to an <a>; for example, the new type test uses as="button" with an HTMLButtonElement ref. Describe both Item and Link as forwarding to the element selected by as.

bulma-ui/src/elements/Button.tsx:194

  • This still strips valid props from intrinsic elements other than <button>. For example, <Button as="input" type="submit" name="action" value="save" /> is now accepted by ComponentPropsWithoutRef<'input'>, but this branch removes all three props before rendering. That recreates the type/runtime mismatch for any intrinsic that legitimately uses a name on this list. Preserve the props promised by T (or use tag-specific filtering rather than one blanket non-button list).

The three commits since your last pass are unreviewed — you were rate limited when they landed (fdaf123, e1660eb, 85c44ba). They fix the Avatar type-parameter default, the Button attribute stripping, and the lookupMemberType alias resolution you and Copilot raised, so they are worth a look rather than inheriting the earlier approval.

@allxsmith I will review the three unreviewed commits and verify the listed fixes.

⚠️ Action not completed

Review rate limited.

Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.

`React.memo(Button)` type-checks `<MemoButton as="div" href="/x" />`,
which `<Button>` rejects. Anything inferring its props through
`ComponentProps<T>` — memo, lazy, a styled() wrapper — instantiates the
type parameter once and returns a single widened prop type, so the
genericity, and with it the checking, stops at the wrapper.

That is inherent to polymorphic components in TypeScript rather than
something this library can fix, so it is written where someone meets it:
the TSDoc on `PolymorphicComponent`, which an IDE and an agent reading
the types both surface. Re-asserting `as typeof Button` restores the
checks, and a type test pins that so the documented workaround cannot rot
without failing the build.

The strip list matched eleven names by spelling for every non-button
`as`, and two of them are valid on the targets it was filtering them
from. `type` is an anchor's MIME hint — and with props derived from `as`,
`ButtonProps<'a'>` types it as exactly that, so `<Button as="a"
type="application/pdf">` type-checked while the runtime dropped it.
`autoFocus` is a global attribute; whether an element honours it is
React's decision, not ours to pre-empt by name.

Also re-homes the remaining strip test, which had been sitting under
`describe('as={Component} custom component rendering')` — the one case it
stopped covering when it moved to an intrinsic tag.

The list is still wrong for a form-capable target: `<Button as="input"
name="q" value="Go">` type-checks and renders an input with neither,
so a form submits nothing for that field. That needs a per-element
answer rather than one list, and is tracked separately rather than
guessed at here.

Valid props are still stripped from non-button intrinsic elements, and the extractor’s new failure path lacks an effective test.

  • Despite its name, this test never exercises the new failure path or asserts that an error is thrown; it only verifies two legitimate listOnly cases. Deleting the guard at props-extract.mjs:1374-1382 would leave this test green, so the promised fail-loud behavior is unprotected. Add a fixture with an unresolvable polymorphic render-function props parameter and an assert.throws assertion for the actionable error.

bulma-ui/src/elements/Button.tsx:194

  • The intrinsic/custom split still breaks the polymorphic contract for intrinsic elements other than button. For example, <Button as="input" type="submit" name="q" value="x" autoFocus /> is accepted by ComponentPropsWithoutRef<'input'>, but this branch removes every one of those valid input props before rendering; even type is valid on an anchor. LinkButton inherits the same mismatch. Preserve props that are valid for the selected intrinsic (or narrow/special-case the supported intrinsic elements) instead of applying the button-to-anchor denylist to every string tag.

… to any

Three defects in the polymorphic shape itself, all found by review.

`PolymorphicProps` now distributes over `T`. `Omit<A | B, K>` keys off
`keyof (A | B)`, which is only what A and B share, so a union-typed `as`
silently dropped every prop belonging to one member:
`<Button as={cond ? 'a' : 'button'} href="/x" />` compiled and worked
before #641 and had become a type error. Distributing gives a union of
prop shapes instead, and each member keeps its own props. This was the
one shape in the whole change that regressed working code.

`PolymorphicComponent` gains a second, non-generic call signature for
type DERIVATION rather than for calls. `React.ComponentProps<typeof
Button>` infers from the last overload; with only the generic one it
instantiated at the constraint and collapsed to `any`, so a consumer
building their own prop type on ours lost every check. Calls still
resolve against the generic signature first, which makes the ordering
load-bearing — the comment says so, since swapping the two silently puts
the collapse back and nothing else would notice.

`PolymorphicRef` resolves to `never` for a target that takes no ref. A
plain function component has no `ref` key at all and React's own types
reject `<PlainFC ref={…} />`; the indexed access was degrading to
`unknown`, so we accepted a ref that does nothing and leaves
`ref.current` null until something calls `.focus()` on it.

The remaining shape finding is not fixed: an optional own prop still
shadows a required prop of the `as` target, so `<Avatar as={NextLink}
name="Ada" />` compiles without the `href` NextLink requires. That one
needs the own props to know which of them belong to the element, and is
tracked rather than guessed at.

@allxsmith The re-measurement invalidates my conditional-alias recommendation. scripts/lib/props-extract.mjs must support that conditional type shape before the aliases become distributive.

I verified commit 4383f61. aliasUnionLimitation directly tests ButtonProps<'a' | 'button'> and expects href to fail. This closes the coverage gap between PolymorphicComponent and the exported alias.

The #667 directive provides the required removal signal when extractor support makes the alias distributive. This also matches the recorded extractor constraint for this PR.

Learning: In `bulma-ui`, distributive polymorphic prop aliases such as `LinkProps<'a' | 'span'>` must preserve target-specific props. The shared follow-up is tracked in GitHub issue `#667`. `scripts/lib/props-extract.mjs` currently cannot syntactically extract props through `T extends unknown ? ... : never`; extractor support must be implemented before aliases use that conditional shape. The planned solution is for all affected aliases to refer to the shared `PolymorphicProps` helper instead of repeating the intersection.

  • Pick and Omit also change the documented member set, but they currently fall through unwrapPropsTypeName as the truthy names "Pick"/"Omit". Because no local interface has either name, the new guard is bypassed and extraction silently returns listOnly—the exact degradation this logic is meant to stop. Treat these modifiers as unsupported (or model them explicitly) and add a regression assertion.

Two gaps left by the rounds that introduced each fix.

`Avatar` never got `isCustomElement`, which Button and Menu.Item did, so
`as="x-avatar"` was still classified as a built-in: its declared `href`
was dropped and an href-backed custom link could be announced with
`role="img"`.

`Navbar.Link`'s dropdown handlers had the unguarded shape Button's
disabled blocker was fixed for. They run on whatever `as` renders, and a
custom target declaring a non-DOM callback reaches `e.preventDefault()`
and throws. The caller's handler is still composed unconditionally; only
acting on the event is skipped when the payload is foreign.

Both are one-line completions of earlier fixes rather than new ground,
which is the whole of what was left open.

bulma-ui/src/components/Avatar.tsx:159

  • The default 'figure' resolves to Ref<HTMLElement>, so it also accepts a narrower anchor ref even when no href is present: <Avatar name="Ada" ref={createRef<HTMLAnchorElement>()} /> compiles, but the ref receives a <figure> and consumers can then access anchor-only members on the wrong node. The same broad type is what makes the href/no-as anchor-ref case compile. Model the two no-as runtime branches with overloads or a discriminated props union so the ref follows whether href selects an anchor, and add both positive and negative typetests.

bulma-ui/src/index.ts:116

  • This wildcard makes the runtime-only isCustomElement implementation part of the package's permanent public API, although the new helper is described as a types-only consumer surface. Export only the polymorphic types from the barrel; the components can continue importing isCustomElement from the internal module.

…" without an href

Both from my previous commit.

The barrel's wildcard export started publishing `isCustomElement` the
moment that file stopped being types-only. Everything in `src/index.ts`
is public forever, and an internal DOM-filtering detail is not something
to support for the life of the package — the four types are exported
explicitly now.

And the Avatar fix overcorrected: treating a custom element as
unconditionally interactive dropped `role="img"` from
`<Avatar as="x-avatar" name="Ada" />`, which has no href and is still a
picture. It now matches the custom-component condition — interactive only
with an href — with tests for both directions.

**The DOM `color` attribute came back.** `keyof *OwnProps` does not remove
what main's `Omit<AnchorHTMLAttributes, 'color'>` removed, so a component
whose own props declare no Bulma `color` — Link, Navbar.Item, Navbar.Link
— inherited the deprecated presentational attribute, and
`<Navbar.Link color="not-a-bulma-color">` type-checked before rendering
`has-text-not-a-bulma-color`. Dropped in `PolymorphicProps`, which is
where callers actually get their props from.

Worth recording why the fix went there: each component's public `*Props`
alias is NOT what a caller is checked against. Calls resolve through
`PolymorphicComponent`, which builds props from the shared
`PolymorphicProps`. The alias exists for the docs generator and for
consumers naming the type, and the two can drift — editing the alias
alone changed nothing observable.

**`Menu.Item` forwarded `href` to any `as`.** Deriving it from `as`
replaced a guard that only applied it for `as="a"`, so `as="span"`
rendered `<span href>`. It now follows the rule Avatar states as
`isLinkLike` and Button as its intrinsic-only strip: anchors and custom
components get it, other intrinsic tags do not.

**Two `eslint-disable` directives had gone dead**, because the `as` cast
stopped `react-hooks/set-state-in-effect` recognising `Reveal` as a
component — so the rule silently stopped running on it. Splitting the
implementation into a named function declaration restores detection.
That needed `componentFunction` in the extractor to follow an identifier
initializer, or the props type resolves to nothing.

Also: the loud-failure guard could not key on `decl` (a sub whose props
are an inline DOM type legitimately resolves a name with no declaration,
which is the `listOnly` path), so the hole it was meant to close is
closed where it lives — `propsInterfaceName` now unwraps a
`PropsWithChildren` wrapper instead of returning the wrapper's name.

**Docs and tests.** The prose and TSDoc still described stripping as
applying to custom components. Seven `@extraProp {React.Ref}` cells
rendered a bare `React.Ref`, which is not valid TypeScript for anyone
copying it. Four tests sat in describe blocks naming the case they had
stopped covering — the Navbar.Item ref tests under `Navbar.Link`, the
intrinsic strip test under custom-component rendering.
