fix(web): prevent long links from creating per-character elements - #26843
Long unbroken Markdown links create a <wbr> for every character, producing thousands of DOM elements for a single URL.
Use one inline span with overflow-wrap: anywhere per long word instead. Full link text, destinations and formatted children are preserved. Formatted content keeps its MarkdownLinkContext provider and can wrap instead of inheriting whitespace-nowrap. The change is limited to the shared web/desktop link renderer.
Both browser regression cases use the production MarkdownLinkContext child shape and fail on main. They grow a URL from 128 to 16,000 payload characters and check that its element count stays constant, its text, href and formatting remain intact, and it fits a narrow table. All 13 focused link and Markdown browser tests pass, as does vp run check:changed.
The screenshots use the actual component with the same synthetic URL: 16,024 descendant elements before, five after. They demonstrate rendering and element count, not click latency.

Scope and approval
This is a small, focused fix for an obvious rendering bug under CONTRIBUTING’s exception to prior issue approval. It removes per-character element growth and fixes wrapping in the same link renderer without adding a feature or changing link actions.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Long external-link labels now use CSS wrapping instead of per-character elements, reducing rendering overhead. The change is presentation-only and preserves link text and destinations.

Walkthrough
Long external-link tokens now use wrapping spans instead of per-character <wbr> elements. The fallback link span also uses overflow-wrap: anywhere. A browser test checks long plain and formatted links after rerendering.

Use the production child shape for the formatted case.
ChatMarkdown.tsx passes children inside MarkdownLinkContext. For formatted links, plainHastText returns null, so MarkdownExternalLinkContent puts that entire provider inside its whitespace-nowrap span. A long formatted link therefore overflows the table even though this test passes. Use the production child shape and fix its wrapping. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Long unbroken Markdown links create a
<wbr>for every character, producing thousands of DOM elements for a single URL.Use one inline span with
overflow-wrap: anywhereper long word instead. Full link text, destinations and formatted children are preserved. Formatted content keeps itsMarkdownLinkContextprovider and can wrap instead of inheritingwhitespace-nowrap. The change is limited to the shared web/desktop link renderer. Both browser regression cases use the production
MarkdownLinkContextchild shape and fail onmain. They grow a URL from 128 to 16,000 payload characters and check that its element count stays constant, its text, href and formatting remain intact, and it fits a narrow table. All 13 focused link and Markdown browser tests pass, as doesvp run check:changed.
