fix(web): preserve the active pointer in the flat Device view - #21430
The Flat Device view uses one boolean for every pointer. A second finger can start another gesture, forward its own movement, and end the first finger's gesture when it lifts. Losing pointer capture can leave that boolean active.
Change
Track the active pointer ID and its last normalized point. Ignore other pointers until it ends. On capture loss, end that pointer once at its last point. Clear ownership when the stream is torn down.
This is limited to Flat input. It does not change 3D input, touch-action, or mouse-button filtering. #17020's non-primary mouse guard and #21197's paste support are separate changes in the same component.
Verification
After main's test purge, the browser test file holds only this PR's deterministic pointer-ownership regressions. Its minimal harness uses no timer advancement or capture mock-call assertions, and observes encoded packets from the real stream client after the input-admission handshake.
Browser component regressions exercise two touch IDs, unrelated cancellation/capture loss, normal release, cancellation, capture loss, duplicate end suppression, and a new gesture after release. They inspect encoded packets from the real stream client after its input-admission handshake.
Current-main verification includes a negative control with the production fix reverted, four passing browser cases and 14 passing device stream tests, web package typecheck, scoped lint and format checks in an isolated dependency mirror.
The live-browser evidence below was captured on the original PR candidate, before this main merge.
Real browser UI: the candidate Flat view streamed crew-mini-iphone17pro from the Mac mini. Trusted mouse drag emitted begin/move/end. Native capture release emitted one end and suppressed later move/up packets. A subsequent drag worked.
The UI screenshots include temporary diagnostic targets and an event/packet readout. The device frame and stream are real.
Physical multi-finger touch was not tested. Android live verification did not complete because its stream returned no video; no Android gesture pass is claimed.
Production fix, tests, PR description and images written with GPT-6.1 Sol in T3 Code Nightly.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a small, self-contained fix to flat Device pointer ownership and capture-loss handling, with focused browser tests covering the affected gesture lifecycles. The remaining changes do not affect schemas, deployment, security-sensitive code, product defaults, or static-analysis configuration.

DeviceStreamView tracks the active touch pointer by ID and its latest normalized coordinates. It ignores events from other pointers and ends the touch on pointer-up, pointer-cancel, or lost pointer capture. Browser tests verify pointer ownership and ending behavior.

Summary
Track and validate touch pointer lifecycle apps/web/src/components/device/DeviceStreamView.tsx, apps/web/src/components/device/DeviceStreamView.browser.test.tsx
DeviceStreamView records the active pointer ID and coordinates, filters touch events by pointer ID, and clears pointer state during stream cleanup. Browser tests check concurrent pointer input, input connectivity, supported ending events, and acceptance of a subsequent pointer.
A transient input disconnect can cause the next gesture to be ignored; clearing ownership is a small, bounded fix before merge.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 4a23a
The change restricts each Flat-view gesture to its initiating pointer and clears ownership when capture or the stream is lost. The reviewed change does not expand device access, permissions, or the input protocol.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed event path remains scoped to the currently selected device client. It changes which local pointer may emit touch messages, without adding a target-selection mechanism, credential source, or broader authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The existing primary-button filter and coordinate clamping remain in place. Pointer-ID matching adds gesture isolation, while transport input admission remains enforced separately by the client; pointer identity is not treated as authentication.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Matching up, cancellation, and capture-loss handlers clear ownership before attempting completion, suppressing repeated termination. Stream teardown clears ownership before stopping and detaching the client, preventing the old Flat pointer from remaining eligible to send through a replacement client.

Resolve the DeviceStreamView conflict with pingdotgg#17020 by keeping both
pointer-down guards: a non-primary mouse button and a second pointer
while one is active are both ignored. The browser tests keep main's
touches array; the ownership and capture-loss tests now read it.

Use a different event point for the active lostpointercapture case.
The test moves pointer 7 to (0.5, 0.5), but the active lostpointercapture event also uses (0.5, 0.5). The assertion can therefore pass if the handler uses the event coordinates instead of the stored last point. Send the capture-loss event at (0, 0) while keeping the expected end at (0.5, 0.5).

The stream client opens its input WebSocket only after the MJPEG prime
fetch resolves. configure() looked up the fake socket synchronously and
silently did nothing when it did not exist yet, so on a slow runner the
first test saw no touch packets. configure() now awaits the socket.

iOS drops touches sent before input admission. A pointer that went down
early still claimed the active slot, so the first admitted pointer never
sent its begin. The flat view now ignores pointer-down until input connects.
The capture-loss test now sends a different point from the last move, so
it proves the end uses the stored point. The two router-less renders share
one option with the reason.

If the input socket disconnects during an active pointer, activePointer.current remains set. After reconnection, the pointer-down guard rejects every new pointer because activePointer.current !== null. Clear the local pointer state in the disconnected branch. Do not claim that this leaves a device-side touch active.

Clear activePointer.current in the disconnected branch of the onInputConnected
handler so a stale pointer does not block new pointer-down events after
reconnection. Keep the existing connection-state and restart-notice behavior
unchanged.
Add Android coverage to the pointer lifecycle cases.
DeviceStreamView.browser.test.tsx renders only platform="ios" and records only iOS binary packets. Android uses the same pointer handlers but sends JSON down, move, and up messages after socket admission. The inspected Android tests do not exercise pointer input, so regressions in Android admission, ownership, move filtering, or ending behavior can pass undetected.
Parameterize the existing browser cases for both platforms, open the Android socket before input, and record its JSON touch messages alongside the iOS packets. This is a test coverage gap, not a production failure.

thanks @only21mil. your pointer-id ownership and last-point capture-loss handling are preserved, along with your commits and packet-level regressions.
i merged current main without rebasing, adapted the fix to its shared stream sessions, and combined up/cancel/capture loss into one end handler. ownership now clears when the client or input connection changes, including the disconnect case raised in review. mouse filtering, paste, and 3d input are preserved.

Started github/main (4c9c7d0bb6) in a separate worktree after vp i. Drove the actual web app using the repo's Playwright dependency and /usr/bin/google-chrome: paired, opened the right panel, chose Device, and enabled the device hub. The server's platform check reported:
main: serverPort=16733 webPort=8693
pr: serverPort=13773 webPort=5733
adb devices -l: no attached devices
app iOS: iOS Simulators need macOS with Xcode.
app Android: Android Emulator is missing from /usr/lib/android-sdk.
Stopped main by its captured process group before starting the exact PR head. Ran vp i, started the PR dev server in the background, paired its web client, and repeated the same Device setup interaction. It reported the same missing prerequisites. Both dev servers were stopped afterward. No source changes, commits, or pushes.
These screenshots show the setup blocker, not proof of the pointer fix. Inspected both captures at full size.
Not verified
Could not reach a real streamed device, so the original bug was not reproduced on main and the fix was not verified on the PR. Secondary-pointer isolation, capture-loss termination at the last point, duplicate-end suppression, disconnect/reconnect ownership cleanup, and subsequent gestures remain unverified. Neighboring primary/right-button behavior, paste, and 3D input also remain unverified.
No gesture recording or Codex gpt-6.1-sol provider-to-device pass is claimed. No mock device or synthetic stream was substituted. The dev runner automatically copied its default development snapshot; no projects, threads, or turns were created as scenario data because there was no device to exercise. No native iOS/Android client or remote device host was exercised. The earlier takeover comment records that installing and booting an emulator exhausted the VM; that attempt was not repeated.
GitCafe reports 28/28 successful CI contexts at this head. Those are existing CI results, not live verification and not checks rerun by this pass. Runtime gesture verification still needs a working device host.
Verified on Android emulator (API 35) against a real dev server
verified the changed flat Device input path at b5ed0f6bb72d5dd683960f8c8bfd5abb7ce4677d. no source changes or pushes were needed.
booted the t3 avd with kvm and confirmed sys.boot_completed=1 and android api 35. ran vp i, an isolated dev server on backend 13773/web 5733, the cached native development client, and metro on 8081. reversed the backend and metro ports with adb and paired the native client. the real server project rooted at apps/server held a real thread with two completed codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through this vm's configured local proxy. no replay provider, mock stream, or demo messages were used.
this change lives in the web Device panel, so verification used that panel to stream and control the android emulator running the native client. agent-device and adb also inspected the native app.
primary ownership: during a trusted browser drag, injected a competing pointer's down/move/up/cancel/capture-loss events. the real android input websocket sent only the primary down(0.5,0.5), move(1,0.2687166), up(1,0.2687166). the primary continued moving after the competing release. no competing pointer packets or duplicate release appeared. only the competing pointer events were synthetic; capture handling, stream, socket, backend, and device were real.
capture loss: released actual browser pointer capture after a trusted drag moved. the browser emitted trusted lostpointercapture; the real socket sent exactly one up at the last move point (1,0.2687166). a subsequent trusted gesture sent a fresh down/up pair.
neighboring behavior: a trusted right-click emitted no touch packets. ordinary flat-view taps opened the real thread and displayed the completed provider response. the Device panel's Back control returned to the native thread list, and opening the thread again worked. a fresh gesture also worked after deliberately closing the real input socket and allowing it to reconnect.
the screenshots are before/after opening the same real thread through the flat view, not main-versus-fix comparisons. the adb recording shows the native response and back navigation. inspected the captures and checked uploaded video playback and seeking.
git.cafe reports 28/28 successful checks at this head. those are existing ci results, not checks rerun by this verification pass. no merge, close, rebase, force-push, or label changes.
Not verified
ios cannot run on this linux vm. physical multi-finger input was not exercised; the competing pointer used browser event injection as described above. no original-bug reproduction on github/main, network interruption across remote/relay/tunnel connections, paste, or 3d input regression pass is claimed. disconnect-during-an-owned-drag cleanup was not established independently of the browser's release event. the native captures prove the real app and stream integration; the packet observations above establish pointer ownership.

Problem
Verification
crew-mini-iphone17profrom the Mac mini. Trusted mouse drag emitted begin/move/end. Native capture release emitted one end and suppressed later move/up packets. A subsequent drag worked.Physical multi-finger touch was not tested. Android live verification did not complete because its stream returned no video; no Android gesture pass is claimed.
